William Norman McLeod, a Scotch Highlander, who married twice, the second wife being of the MacKenzie family; and she was sister of the celebrated Sir Alexander MacKenzie, who was knighted for his daring explorations. Allen McLeod was her only son, but he found himself the possessor of three half-brothers by his father's former marriage. These three half-brothers joined the United States army during the War of 1812; and one of them, Neal McLeod, was killed by the Indians. The others escaped with their lives, and served to the close of the war, when the three were discharged at Charleston, S.C. Murdock remained at the South; but Norman came North and later was the father of the noted Episcopal clergyman, Dr. William Norman McLeod. The grandfather, William N. McLeod, died three months before his son Allen was born. The grandmother (MacKenzie) died, and was buried near her husband in Johnstown, N.Y.

This was taken from a Biographical Review of Wyoming County, N.Y.; the subject being Ronald McLeod, the son of Allen McLeod. Ronald and his brother, Alexander McLeod, were the founders of Duncan City, MI. Ronald was also one of the first hotel owners on Mackinaw Island, when he purchased the John Jacob Aster house, around 1850. Ronald also had a brother, John R McLeod, who was the founder of Epoufette, MI. There was also a brother, Charles McLeod, who also came to Michigan and started one of the first saw mills in Monominee, MI.

John R McLeod is my ggreat-grandfather. I do have some more info if I can be help to anyone.

Looking for any information about Isabel McLeod born PEI Feb 6, 1874. Parents were Donald Angus or Angus Donald McLeod and Catherine Buchanan. No other information on the parents at this point and I can locate nothing on the Canadian census. Isabel emmigrated to the US abt 1886 per 1900 US census, though one census gives an earlier date. I know she was in Ct. in 1890's where her first children were born though I am not sure whether she married in Ct. or Ma. She later lived in Ma. until her death in 1941. One of her children was named Archibald, maybe a family name? Her husband had been Walter Young. There are no other living decendents so I have been stuck for a long time. Thank you, K.
Hello,

I am trying to find information on my Great great Grandfather Malcolm McLeod. Looking at the two census records that i have for him he states that he was born in the U.S. Abt 1848 and his parents were born on Prince Edward Island. I believe that he was actually born in Novia Scotia though. He lived most of his life in Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada. He married Agnes Pollock (B. Abt 1853)around 1878 and had three children Angus Alexander Stanley McLeod (B.1879), Jessie May McLeod (B. 1882), and Edna Cathleen McLeod. I believe he died before 1900 because i can't find any record of him after that time. Please contact me if you have any information regarding any of these persons. Also if you have information on Malcolm's parents that would be great. I would appreciate any help! Thank you!

Looking for information on my MacLeod/McLeod roots. The line seems to have originated in Scotland but can not find anything beyond Newfoundland through to Cape Breton. My grandparents we Charles Alexander McLeod and Florence (Caines) McLeod. And my Greatgrandparents were Archibald McLeod and Cartherine(Ferguson) McLeod both born in Cape Breton. The only other listing I have is a GreatGreatGgrandmother who was living with this family and was a widow, her name was Sarah (MacQueen) McLeod. I belive her husband was John McLeod, they both were born in Scotland.
If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Am looking for a connection to the McLeods of Assynt. My ancestor, Isabella Sinclair b. 1789(?) used the name McLeod as the middle name for both of her children, a boy and a girl. I'm guessing it would be a family name, possibly on her mother's side. Can anyone help me figure this out? I know she married a Wm. Brown in Orkney possibly around 1825?
She worked for the McKays and the Scobies.

Obituary: James McLeod (1819-1902), Bourbon County, Kentucky

I came across an old newspaper clipping - unfortunately the publication date and source are not listed, although it is my understanding that this James McLeod died in 1902. (Obituary says he was born in 1819 and lived over four score). High-resolution scan of the clipping is available here: http://www.oldliner.com/files/james_mcleod/

DEATHS
JAMES McLEOD

"Died, at the family residence in this county, on the 11th inst., James McLeod. Deceased was born October 20, 1819, and during his long and busy life resided in the same neighborhood. In the issue of the Democrat last week appeared the announcement of the death of Charlton Alexander, one of the largest land owners in the county - in this issue is recorded the death of James McLeod, whose farm of six hundred acres ad- joined Mr. Alexander's possessions. Surely there is no armor against death. In its relentless course it is the great leveler. Sooner or later it comes to all. Wealth and station and large possessions are powerless to ward it off. The deceased was married in 1859, to Miss Mary Penn, who survives him, after a married life extending over a period of forty-three years. He was a useful and respected citizen and an enterprising and successful farmer, his place being one of the best improved farms in the county. In his long career he was an important factor in the growth and contributed by his labors to the prosperity of the county. He was a man of integrity - such a man gives to the State its high character and leaves the impress of his influence and example upon those who come after him. He was a prudent, safe and successful business man. He won success because he labored for and deserved it. In the death of such a man the whole community sustains an almost irreparable loss. He had lived more than four score years. His life-work was ended, and, no doubt, death came to him as a relief from life's ills and cares and burdens. He is now at rest, and, after all, - rest, rest, infinite rest is what we are all longing and struggling for.

We extend to the relatives of the deceased in their bereavement the expression of our tenderest sympathy.

The funeral services at the family residence, Wednesday morning, were conducted by Rev. A. D. Tadlock, pastor of the Presbyterian church, at Clintonville. The remains were laid to rest in the old Eli Kennedy burying ground.

Besides his wife, Mr. McLeod leaves seven children - Mrs. J. W. Jacoby, Mrs. M. R. Jacoby, Miss Kate, Miss Jean, George, John and James McLeod."

William C. McLeod, NC. to VA. to KY.

I know there must be someone in this world that knows a W. C. Mcleod. First name was William. He married Thona S. or Thony S. and that's all I know about her. I kinda suspect that Thona is, maybe a nickname, or a variation of something else. I know this couple had about 10 children. Both, mom and dad were born in North Carolina. I sorta suspect that to be Avery County, in or near Elk Park. One of their daughters, Elizabeth was the great grandmother of my wife. And I also suspect that one of their other daughters married a Wilcox from the same area of North Carolina. I just about 100% sure of that, but I'll not bet my life on it yet. I'm in the early stages of research for this family. And have extracted all the information possible from the elder members of our family. I haven't looked at all 700 + posts yet, but I will. I would also like to say that this McLeod name here in this post will connect to the Avery County, NC. Wilcox's about 1899 or 1900. So come on all fellow researchers. Join in, any information will be helpful.

Thanks,
Don, in Tennessee

I recently bought a small magazine of creative work by students attending Webster Groves High School in St. Louis County, MO. There is a drawing entitled "English Cottage Under the Stars" drawn by Patty McLeod. The drawing won first place in the Echo (the name of Webster's yearbook or annual)pen and ink drawing contest.

I believe this small magazine would be treasured by a McLeod family member or family researcher.

I found the family in the 1920 Census living in Webster Groves, MO. Peter A. McLeod, her father, is listed as a civil engineer. Her mother is Daisy, and her brother is Craig.

I found Daisy's death certificate which lists her parents as Gustav Strom and Mathilda Bjork of Lake City, MN. Daisy was buried in Lake Charles Cemetery in St. Louis.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this magazine.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@familywesearch.com

McLeod MacLeod Family Castles

Hi,
My father before his death was looking through McLeod family castles on the web and found a picture of a man who was a splitting image of him. He however was never able to remeber where he had found the picture. We are now on a search to find any pictures of people that owned McLeod family castels(in Scotland) or website links to any photos that might be available. We don't know how old it was, but only that of a male who looked just like him.
It could be very helpful in our family search or even interesting to see.

Malcolm, Norman, William, & Murdoch Mcleod--Tryon County NY to Ontario as loyalists

Hello,

I'm looking for information that might tie this family together and anything that would suggest where they are from in Scotland. All of them lived as tenants on Sir John Johnson's land in Tryon County NY right before the Revolution and I believe all of their families migrated to the Glengarry/ Stormont area of Ontario.

Malcolm McLeod was a soldier in the French-Indian war, married Isobel ?, had son Thomas. He died in jail as a prisoner of war in America during the revolution and his widow Isobel settled on lot 17, con 11 Lancaster, Glengarry County.

Norman (? is this "Big" Norman McLeod 1733-1794, father of Alexander of Glenelg?) and Malcolm settled in 1773.

Murdoch and William McLeod settled in Ny in 1775. William was a relative of Capt. Malcolm McLeod. He served as a sergeant in the loyalist forces and settled in Charlottenburgh.

Thanks
Kim

James McLeod (b. 1808) & wife Elspeth McKnight, New Cumnock & Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland

James was the grandson of James McLeod & Jean Stevenson and of Andrew McTurk & Ann Kerr.

James Mcleod (also spelled McCloud on some cencus records) was the son of William McLeod & wife Janet McTurk of New Cumnock, Ayrshire and was ch Feb. 28, 1808 at New Cumnock.

He md about 1831 at New Cumnock to Elspeth McKnight whose parents were William McKnight & Agnes Crichton (of New Cumnock), and whose sister, Janet McKnight had married James McLeod's brother John. Elspeth was born about 1803 at New Cumnock. This couple were on the 1841 & 1851 cencus as living in New Cumnock and moved to Kilmaurs, were they appear on the 1861 census. On the 1861 census some of their children were with them and their son James, who was married to a Margaret who was born in Kilmarnock, was living not too far from them. Their son George did not appear on the 1861 census with them. Their son James did not have any children with him on either the 1861 or the 1881 census. Their two daughters, Janet & Agnes do not appear to have married.

I couldn't find a headstone for them but found mention of some of their children in the cemetery records for the old cemetery in the town of New Cumnock record office. They are probably buried in Kilmaurs.

Their children were all bapt. in New Cumnock and were:
William McKnight McLeod ch Aug. 14, 1831 died Jan 1874?
James McLeod ch Feb. 23, 1834
Hugh McLeod ch Aug. 14, 1836
Janet McTurk McLeod ch Nov. 4, 1838, d Feb. 27, 1904
George McLeod ch Oct. 6, 1841
Agnes Crichton McLeod ch Jan.25, 1845 d Dec. 11, 1902

I would like to be in contact with descendants of this family or people who have been researching McLeod from New Cumnock and Dalmellington areas, who can help me fill in the gaps.
Please contact me directly at
jifjc@primus.ca
OR at
jif137@hotmail.com
OR by mail C/O Richard Finney, 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4, Canada.
Janet Isobelle Finney
William McLeod (b. 1778?) & wife Janet McTurk, New Cumnock, Ayrshire

William McLeod (son of James McLeod & wife Jean or Jane Stevenson) was born at Dalmellington about 1778 (according to New Cumnock census records) and died May 23, 1860 at New Cumnock, Ayrshire.
He married about 1804 to Janet or Jennet McTurk ch Aug. 22, 1784 at New Cumnock (her name is spelled both ways on records and she was the daughter of Andrew McTurk and Ann Kerr of New Cumnock). William & Janet appear to have lived in New Cumnock parish all their married lives.

Their children were all christened in New Cumnock parish and were:
Ann ch May 23, 1804 (don't know what happened to her)
Jean ch Feb. 16, 1806 (don't know what happened to her)
James ch Feb. 28, 1808 (married Elspeth McKnight,& had a family, moved to Kilmaurs, Ayrshire).
Andrew ch July 11, 1810 (married, stayed in New Cumnock)
Margaret Mitchell McLeod ch June 7, 1812
John ch Sept. 4, 1814, (married Janet McKnight, sister of Elspeth, moved to Kilmarnock & Lanark, died young)
William ch Nov. 17, 1816, (married Elizabeth McLachlen in Glasgow, moved to Dalry, Ayrshire).
David ch April 30, 1820 (don't know what happened to him but was alive and with his father on 1841 census in New Cumnock)
Hugh ch March 2, 1823, (married Janet Muir)
Duncan ch Sept. 6, 1829 (don't know what happened to him)

Hugh was my ancestor. He lived at New Cumnock and married Janet Muir (daughter of John Gibson Muir & Agnes Vallance).
Cencus shows that Andrew and James also stayed at New Cumnock and raised familys there, but James later moved to Kilmaurs with his wife and several of their children.
Margaret may have married a Mr. Mitchell and Jean may have married a Mr. Stewart and lived at Dalmellington?

I would like to be in contact with descendants or anyone who has researched McLeod and has information on these families.
Please contact me directly at
jifjc@primus.ca
OR at
jif137@hotmail.com
OR by mail C/O Richard Finney, 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4, Canada.
Janet Isobelle Finney
James McLeod & Jean Stevenson md. 1778? Ayrshire, Scotland

James & Jean may have lived at Dalmellington, which is a few miles from New Cumnock, Ayrshire. Jean may have been born in Dalmellington. There were several Stevenson families whose children's names appear in Dalmellington parish church records, and several Jean Stevenson entries for around the same time period around the 1750s. There were other McLeod families in Dalmellington records but I could not find any entries for James & Jean or their children.

Their son, William McLeod, was born at Dalmellington in about 1778 (according to New Cumnock census records) and died May 23, 1860 at New Cumnock. William married Janet or Jennet McTurk (daughter of Andrew McTurk and Ann Kerr) of New Cumnock, and they had a large family. I want to find out more about James & Jean and about their children. They probably had more than just William.

Please contact me directly at
jifjc@primus.ca
OR at
jif137@hotmail.com
OR by mail C/O Richard Finney, 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4, Canada.
Janet Isobelle Finney

Can anyone give me any information on my GGGrandmother Jessie McLeod from Lochbroom Scotland. She married David Munro of Ibrox Farm Govan Glasgow in 1874 and according to 1881 Census she was born around 1847. I would like her parents and when she died if its out there and anything else that may be available. There are so many Jessies on the websites I would like to narrow it down if possible. On my G Grandfathers death certificate she is known as Mary so there could be a discrepancy there.
Thank you. Kay
