I'm researching Henry Harrison McVeigh who was born 1/14/1888 in Chrisman, IL and died 8/25/1953 in Lansing, MI.

Henry was married on 8/27/1921 in MI to a woman by the name of Vera Wingerter who'd had two previous marriages that ended in divorce to men with surnames of Butts (had two children) and McEnaney. Vera eventaully also divorced Henry as well and married yet another man who remained her husband until her death in March of 1958.

Little is known about Henry and am hoping he must have been included in someone's family history . . .

Anxious to learn more about Henry.

Assistance is always very much appreciated.

Leslie Smith (AZ)

hi,
back in the saddle. stopped reseaching - hed got sore from running into brick walls.
trying to find a link between the mcveigh and watt families.
my grandfather teddy "mcveigh" watt was adopted by joseph & clara watt. b. 4/24/1885. no local birth nor adoption record. joseph was born in madison co., OH -father James mother eliza. james and joseph families were notorious for taking in children. in most cases (back then) adoptions, etc. were between relatives. there have been many mcveigh and watt families from OH. there was also a hint that tne mcveigh family was from s.e. MI - maybe detroit area???
I am not getting any younger (72) and I would really like to get this cleared up.
Oh, this might be of interest-in local records is an Ettie "mcveigh" watt listed female-SAME AS GRANDFATHER although no mention of him. there was never a mention of a twin. i can see mispelling first name but gender????
Hopefully, some mcveigh or watt family will HELP?

Thanks

Paul Watt, Sr.
Having real problems getting more info on John or Matilda.

Not sure if they go further back in that area or even if the spelling would have been changed from say mcveigh at some point.

Patrick left for Glasgow but was buried in the local cemetry at Killylea. The headstone says in memnory of his father John , but maybe Patrick changed the spelling when he left for Glasgow??

Need some help - thanks!

hi, i have a real strong ties between the McVeigh and Watt Families. Info: show Madison & Guernsey Counties????
james watt b: 1840's - wife eliza often had children and adults living with them with the name of McVeigh. two were ettie and theodore or teddy ( both adopted by James & Clara - and maybe maggie. the information shows a maggie as family being part of family (no last name) or time frame but from pictue appears maggie appears to be in her 20's - also in the picture a boy about5-7 yrs only identified as my gr. father's (appears to be 3-4) uncle "Pud". there are so many links to the McVeigh family - I'm going nuts!!!

I just got back into research - too many walls - hard on the head!

Thanks

Paul

new email address: pdwatt@sbcglobal.net

This is quite a stretch but could Alice gone to live with the James Watt family around 1850 - Madison Co.or Guernsey Co., OH (conflicting info.). In the census there was a new child Alice age 2. They were continually taking in children that were not their's. some showing different last names. others not. I also have a Joseph A. Watt b: 1844-1844??(gr. grandfather)that appears to follow in his father's footsteps. My grandfather Theodore "Teddy" Watt (b: 4/24/1885)was adopted By James as well as an Ettie (?)spelling was not real clear. "McVeigh" Watt with the same b. date as "Teddy". any twins on your list?

Thanks

Paul

P.S. stopped researching for a few years got tired of brick walls

Jeremiah McVeigh II was my great great great grandfather.

I believe it was Jeremiah McVeigh II that changed the last name from McVeagh to McVeigh.

Jeremiah McVeigh II had a son James Harvey. James Harvey had a son Alfred. James Harvey had a son Harvey Ray. Harvey Ray had a son Raymond Wendall. Raymond Wendall has a son Ronald McVeigh. That's me!

Jeremiah McVeigh II was born February 17, 1774 in Chester County, PA. He died in Muskingum County, OH December 1, 1846.

His father, Jonathon McVeagh, was born in Chester County, PA September 1, 1743. His mother, Elizabeth BULL, was born in PA August 20, 1746.

His grandfather, Jeremiah McVeagh I, was born in PA after 1699 in Bristol, Philadelphia, PA. His grandmother, Mary Potts, was born February 3, 1703 in Bristol, Philadelphia, PA.

His great grandfather, Edmund McVeagh, come to Philadelphia in June of 1682 aboard the ship AMITY. He was indentured to Captain Thomas Holme, William Penn's surveyor general. I have his death being in 1739. His mother was Alice Dickinson. I have no information on Alice.

Edmund MacVeagh and Alice Dickinson are my ancestors. The McVeighs in Illinois and Iowa had a McVeigh family reunion today. If the Quarterly Reports are something I could retype and put in computer friendly format, I would be willing to do so. We could then post them on line with proper attribution to Agnes.

My Ohio ancestor was Jeremiah McVeigh II. He died in Cottage Hill, Ohio which I think is in Muskingum County. I have not located the cemetery where he was buried.

McVeigh family, Armagh,Ireland.

Hi Maurice.....just a long shot here from Australia....I have been trying to find the family of my gggrandmother, Sarah McVeigh, who left Armagh Ireland for Australia in 1854 to work as a domestic servant on a large Victorian Property. Sarah lists her birth place as Armagh, her year of birth as 1830, and parents as Patrick McVeigh and Mary Ann Hatherton. I have searched records, and still have not been able to find the family poor Sarah left behind. These people lost their daughter to desperate times, and probably never knew what happened to her. I have her story, and I feel a need to find her family. Do you know of any McVeigh family from Armagh Maurice who had a daughter named Sarah who left and never came home in the early 1850's?
Many thanks Maurice, and best wishes
Rosie

I just started work on this section of my family, I have a little information about Alfred. Alfred is my 2nd great grandfather and I am also keenly interested in him. I think he was an interesting and fairly successful man. But he has a tragic story. If you are interested, my email is jimhlink@hotmail.com. I plan to go to Lancaster Ohio and find his grave and any other information I can about him. No death records were kept in Ohio before 1870 so it will take footwork.

Hi Rosie,

It just so happens that I came across this message recently but you may already know these facts:-
Eagan-McGrath Drownings-Wednesday January 6, 1858

Warnings Against Playing on Ice – Four Lives Lost – Trinity, December 29, 1857 – As a warning against playing on Ice, I feel it right to ask Publicity for the following on Sunday afternoon (27th inst.) on a pond in this neighborhood some 15 or 20 children (boys & girls) were playing. A boy named EGAN, son of Daniel Egan, and nephew of Captain Egan of this place, took another small boy named McGRATH with him to teach him how to skate, and venturing too far out over deep water, the ice broke under them and both fell through, Egan’s brother ran to save them but he fell in also. The sister of Egans’ seeing her brothers sink and disappear, ran screaming to their rescue and she also fell through and thus the two brothers 14 and 16 and their sister 18 were drowned with the boy McGrath aged 9 or 10. The feelings of the bereaved parents at so awful and sudden catastrophe must be left to the imagination of those who can commiserate the distressed – Correspondent of Newfoundlander

I use a search engine named Kartoo.com and whilst I was seeking information on Duff, Reilly & McIlvenny families, the message above one on one site!

I've not come across the name Hatherton and the earliest McVeigh I have is Edward McVeigh b.1860 Ireland d.abt.1935 Belfast Anderson Street, married Mary Holmes, kids- Edward, Joseph, Katie, Margaret, Mary, Robert, Rosemary, Sally, William & Eliza-Jane b.1884-1930.

This copy message may be of some help:-

M'Veigh-Nicholson Dunlop-Co Armagh-Aus

Annie Dunlop , Shankill Post Office Co Dublin
Sister
Hesther Nicholson Dunlop Co Armagh wed Aus Patrick M'Veigh, of Epswich.
went Queensland in 1873.
Hi Laura..just on the odd chance, perhaps you may be able to help in my search for my Armagh ancestors..Patrick McVeigh bc1800 and his wife, Maryanne nee Hatherton. Their daughter (my gg grandmother) Sarah McVeigh was born in 1830, Armagh (marriage certif). Sarah arrived in Australia in May 1854 aboard the 'Matoaka' and by Dec 1854 she was married to a James Christopher Egan b1827/8 Dublin. They marrried in Dec 1854 Melbourne and had 6 children. Their story is a sad one, and for that reason, I would love to make contact, or learn about the parents/siblings of Sarah and her story. Any information would be greatly appreciated..or any new places to research would be just great. Thankyou for your time Laura. Kindest regards, Rosie.

Bill,

The Rose Gilmore that I have in my notes is the daughter of Michael A. Gilmore and Mary Corrigan and she was born approx. 1888 in Stonington, CT. Her husband was James McVeigh and she had a number of children. The only one whose name I know at this point is John McVeigh (b ca 1920). He was later adopted by his maternal aunt, Agnes Gilmore Rowland, and her husband, John Joseph Rowland. They changed his name to Joseph Edward Rowland. Rose Gilmore McVeigh died in Colchester, CT in 1969. She was a ward of the state at the time so was probably either hospitalized or institutionalized at the time of her death. Does any of this sound similar to your family? My email address is: LOKeefe@aol.com.

Larry O'Keefe

Many thanks for the information Laura.

My maternal grandmother Mary Ellen Drysdale, who died in 1953, lived in Ballycrabeg, and I used to know Clints there.
There are still a few about, but it's not such a common name here.
Oddly enough, I found a memorial to Elizabeth Clint Dowdell in grandmother's (Mary Ellen Drysdale) bible, but the card was printed in New York.
Elizabeth Clint Dowdell died 6th Nov. 1929.

My mother's father was Thomas Dowdall, but I don't know if there is a connection.

Thomas died in Belfast Nov 1919 from war wounds. He was shot accidently in the early days of the war, and was probably not fit to get married to my grandmother, as he had a bullet in his head for some years until it finally killed him.

Elizabeth Picton's memorial card was in the Mooney family bible, but I don't know who put it there, as my paternal grandmother Maggie (Jones) Mooney died in 1937, Newtownards.
My grandfather Joe Mooney died Newtownards 1956.

Great grandfather Thomas Jones died in Portadown c1929, but his son, my father's cousin visited often, and he might have left the card.
I did not find it until after my father's death.
My mother did not know who she was.

I did find a lot about Elizabeth Picton's husband, as someone who posted on Rootsweb got in touch.

Thomas Picton's family were English, although I think he was born in the South of Ireland. He played the organ at churches in Belfast, and held concerts in St Mary's Church Chapel Lane Belfast.
I have Elizabeth's parent's names somewhere, but can't find her birth.
I think it was the secretary in St Peter's or St Matthew's (where they married)who gave me the parent's names, and said Elizabeth was born in Keady.
Mabye she was baptised before her marriage because her birth wasn't registered.

I found her will, and there were a few names on this.
I will maybe post this info again, as it is a few years since I did so, and my E-mail address has changed since.

Thank's again.

Margaret

I have been looking at the Ulster History Site, and there are a lot of Rinty's relatives pictured there, with names.

I have been looking for a birth for some time.
Elizabeth Curran was said to be born Keady c1873, but I can't find her on the index.
I have more info. I did post on the Armagh boards some time ago.
Can find a lot on her husband, Thomas Picton, but not Elizabeth.
I will post on the Armagh board again soon, as I have her will.

Margaret

Thanks, but I don't have McVeigh relatives myself, that I know of, although I have been researching other names in Keady.
I am just helping a friend who hasn't a computer at present.
I used to know a Monaghan family in Newtownards, but I have a feeling they came up from the South of Ireland to work during the last War.
I am not sure of this, but a lot of people did, to work in Shorts factory.

Hi Margaret,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I already have his information and his parents names. I am trying to locate as many siblings as possible and their families.

Although, Rinty has a sister Mary who may be still be amongst us! I would like to find where the family came from before Belfast.

I know of a large McVeigh family still living around the Keady area if interested.

Thanks again and good luck.

Laura
