Sanilac county Michigan Melbourne history

This is the history as told by myfFather Kenneth Melbourne

Here is family history ,at least as well as I know from hearsay.
Great,great,great,etc.. Grandpa William was born sometime in the 1780's .Where, I don't know. What I do know is that his son George was born in Montreal,Quebec in 1818. Six years later ol' Bill got himself killed by an especially agile horse with an attitude.Bill figured, "I'm about to break this horse to saddle." The horse figured,"Not in your lifetime,Buster!" Obviously ,the horse was a little better at figuring than Bill.
The grieving widow and son George were taken in by a kindly gent down the St. Lawrence river in upper New york State who wed the widow and raised young George.,who had much better luck with horses than his father ,became a teamster that pulled barges down the Erie Canal. Sometime around 1845 George married a fine NewYork girl named Nancy Farr .They soon had two daughters and in 1854 My great grandpa Lorenzo was born. In the next twenty years they migrated across Ontario to settle in what later became Lexington Michigan.
Don't know much about young Lorenzo's life except that at 24 he married Jane Watson and they had lots of Lakeshore property and raised and sold berries for most of southeast Michigan I always imagined he had a sign on his fence that said "Lorenzo's Humungous Berry Farm"
Born in 1889,young Watson grew up on a berry farm north of Lexington MI. In 1917 he married Martha Merrill and started a dairy/grain farm south of carsonville MI and was also the caretaker of the Washington Cemetary near his farm.He moved to a second farm further west in 1942 and sold it in 1951 to retire in Croswell MI,Holding a part time job at the Aunt Jane Pickle factory. Being very deaf most of his life Watson never trusted motor vehicles and he always drove a team of horses for farm work. Martha did all the car driving. His life long hobby was poetry ,and he had written several volumes ,one published.Several single poems were printed in local newspapers.
Martha was not just a farmer's wife but Watson,s life partner.A deeply religious person ,she was not preachy but literaly lived Christianity every day with enthusiasm and humor.and in so doing passed on solid moral and ethical values to all her children and grandchildren. who adored her. (with a twinkle in her eye and knowing little boys need relief from solemn prayers she told her grandsons about a "naughty"Grace verse that went-" 'scuse the 'taters and pass the meat .c'mon you devils dig in and eat.").
The couple produced three children, My father George"Merle"(Born in 1920}, my aunt Dorothy and my uncle Warren.
A physically strong and athletic child ,Merle(my Pop)was also quite bright and a good student. After graduating he tried his hand at blacksmithing ,boxing, driving a bread truck and a machinery repairman at Mueller brass Co.During World War II he served in the Army as an operating engineer.in the Pacific theater. After the war he trained for watchmaking and jewelry repair, which became his career.
My Ma ,Millie was born 1n 1921 ,the fifth of ten children, which provided me with scads of cousins. Always adventurous, she and Pop did a lot of motorcycle riding before they married.but the Scoot was sold when family responsibilites came as a result of marriage. I often wondered if they regretted trading in the Harley to get me out of hock at the hospital. Wasn't no Blue Cross back then.

I was one month old when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Our Country was just recovering from the Great Depression. My parents had just set up their first apartment in town. The furniture was so sparse that my crib was the third dresser drawer down
Through good fortune, from the ages of four through twelve,I spent my summer vacations on my paternal grandparents farm. During the early years it was a taste of the previous century for the area had not yet been wired for electricity, the buildings had not yet been plumbered and bottled gas was still in the future.Since grandpa was almost totally deaf he didn't trust tractors, so all the farm machinery was powered by his team of gigantic Belgian Draft horses(they made clydesdales look like ponies) .All in all, a dream environment in the mind of a young boy.

you can see photos and more history at

http://beastle58.tripod.com/togc1.html

Grace Shoemaker Melbourne (born abt 1884), wife of George of Wesley (Will Co.) IL in 1930

I have an original studio photograph of Grace Shoemaker Melbourne, taken in about 1905, which I would like to get back in the hands of family members.

The photo gives her full name. The 1930 Wesley (Will Co.) IL census shows Grace as wife of George Melbourne, and gives her age as 46 (i.e. born about 1884).

Please email me if you are related to this family. margerice@prodigy.net

Lorenzo Melbourne died very suddenly last Thursday night at his home, two and one-half miles east of Applegate, aged 61 years. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at the Ridge M. E. church, Rev. J. Bett officiating. The church was totally inadequate to hold the large crowd of sympathizers present, among whom were a number of fellow members of the A. O. O. G. The interment was made at Washington cemetery. Mr. Melboune was born in New York state and while a child came with his parents to Sanilac county. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Mathews, Lexington township; Mrs. Chas. Parker, Washington township; Mrs. Thos. Branton, Mrs. James Branton, Sanilac township; Watson, Iva and Orpah, all at home. ----- Jeffersonian, February 19, 1915
