Frances Memory, born about 1822 in County Mayo. According to her second marriage certificate her father was Robery Memory, a tailor. She must have initially married John Bolton who must have died before 1845 when she in first notede in Manchester, England. One of her daughters was Susannah Bolton, born Mayo, my great grandmother.
The only Memory in the Griffiths Valuations (circa 1850) is Robert Memory, living in Ballycarra.
This may be your Robert Memory (or possibly his son.)

Hi Cousin Bob,

It is good to hear from you. You and my mom are third cousins.

I live in OH too, Butler County. I have talked to your Uncle Edwin several years ago so I have quite a lot on your line. I also met another cousin who lived in Greenhills in Hamilton County about 5 years ago - but her name escapes at the moment. She was a neighbor of a cousin on my Dad's side who I was doing family history with. Would love to get updates on your line.

Did your uncle Paul play baseball in Dayton in the 1940s? My great-uncle Paul played for a Cincinnati team. He told me once that he played a game in Dayton where the catchers for each team were Paul Bohart/Bohardt. I wonder if they knew that they were second cousins?

Here's some more history on the family...

Your grandfather was the son of Jacob J. Bohardt and Amelia Anne Harker.

My great-grandfather was the son of Henry Harry BOHART and Emma Markland HAY.

Jacob and Henry were the sons of Peter BUCHHEIT/BOHART and
Charlotte Louise FILLHARDT. Notice that BOHART was previously BUCHHEIT and Jacob changed BOHART to BOHARDT. Henry and the other 4 brothers, Peter, William and John, stayed with BOHART.

Peter immigrated from Gersbach, Bavaria about 1849 at about the age of 13. Gersbach is a former village now a part of the larger city of Pirmasens which is near the French border not far from Strausbourg. Pirmasens is in the lower part of the Rhine Pfalz - about 7 miles north of the French border. From about 1792 to about 1815 the area belonged to France. Did he come with his parents and siblings? Their surname was changed from "BUCHHEIT" to "BOHART" before 1890. They were Protestant or Episcopalian. The first record of Peter in America is a marriage record in Hamilton County, OH Nov 18, 1858.

They moved to Campbell County, KY by 1862.

I have lots more. Contact me at tlspears1@fuse.net.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Cousin Traci

Hi,

My name is Robert Bohardt Jr. I am 54 years old, the fourth of eight children. My mother Donna Jean Stoecklien died around 1959. My father remarried and had three more children by his second wife. My Father Robert Sr. died in the early 1980's. Paul Clifford Bohardt was my grandfather.

I don't know about the name Clifford. It is not Dutch/German so it may well be that your great grandfather's father married someone of English descent. Just a guess.

I guess we are cousins of some degree though how that sizes up is a bit complex. I can never keep all that once or twice removed business straight.

I know little of my fathers ancestry. I have seen a few things online but they only went back to your great great grandfather.

What part of the world are you in? I am in Ohio. There are quite a few Bohardts here and we are all related. There are some Bohardts in Wisconsin but I cannot tell if they are relatives or not.

Thanks for writing.

Bob

Bob,

Are you a Bohardt descendant? If so we are related.

My great grandfather Clifford Peter BOHART was a first cousin of Paul Clifford Bohardt who married Blanch Sanders Memory. I wonder where the CLIFFORD name comes from. There were no BOHART uncles named Clifford so it is interesting that a pair of cousins both were named Clifford.

I have a lot of the BOHART/BOHARDT history. Would love to exchange info.

Just noticed your inquiry about one Blanche Memory. My father's mother was a Blanche Sanders who was born in Kentucky. She had two children with my grandfather, Samuel Memory (I have never found a record of marriage, though I might have overlooked a source). She Later married a Paul Bohardt and and had four more sons. At the time of her death she was living in Dayton, Ohio. Hope this helps in your search.

"In Memory Of . . ." anyone know the Graveyard story?

My husband's grandmother is a Memory (read end of this for graveyard story). Her line goes like this:

Anna James and Isaac Memory of Abatillery, South Wales, had twelve children, including a son named James Memory (b. 4/12/1865, d. 9/7/61). The family immigrated to Ohio (Castle Gardens?) in 1872.

James moved to La Salle, IL and married Anna Janette (Jenny) Randolph. They family then moved many many places, eventually settling in Lodi, CA in 1916. Over the years, they seven children: Harvey, Nora, George, Alden (died at 5), Ruth, William, and James. I have quite a bit of information on James Memory Sr. if anyone is interested.

Harvey Isaac Memory (b.?) married Ethyl Young. They had several children including a daughter named Ruth, who is my husband's grandmother.

Question is: Ruth swears that all Memories are related because the name is made up. It goes something like this: there was a son of English gentry who wanted to marry a poor Welsh girl but the family was against it. They decided to elope. At some point during their elopement, they had to choose a new name so that the husband could hide from his family. They were in a graveyard and saw "In Memory Of" on a grave and decided Memory would be a good last name.

The end of this story is that the young couple got married and boarded a ship to America, which does not tie in with Anna and Isaac immigrating from South Wales (unless Isaac was the gentry kid). I'm trying to get the facts sorted from the fiction.

Does anyone else know this story, or do you have any further information on this branch of the Memory family?

Need info on desc. of Isaac and Anna Memory (fr. Abatillery, S. Wales, 1872)

I'm looking for any information on the descendants (or antecedents) of Isaac and Anna (James) Memory. They emigrated to America from Abatillery, S. Wales in 1872, and settled in Ohio (possibly Castle Gardens), about ten miles from Sharon, Pennsylvania. Isaac became a mineworker, and at some point, a Methodist minister.

Isaac and Anna had twelve children: 5 girls and 7 boys. Although we don’t know the names of all of the children, we do know of James, John, Harry, and Katherine (later Graham).

My husband's line continues with the son James (b. April 12, 1865, d. September 7, 1961), who moved all over the place before settling in Lodi, California. He married Anna Janette Randolph. I have quite a bit of information on James for anyone who is interested. Thanks!
Surname Memory/ Memery/ Memeri/ Memary in France and Algiers

My mother's maiden name was Memory, but it originally had a different spelling, think it was Memery or Mameri.
There are a lot of Memerys and Memorys in France, a far more common surname there than in England, also found in former French colonies with a variety of spellings as above.
My ancestors (great grandads family) lived in Algiers, North Africa although I think they were probably French Algerian rather than Native Algerian. last known relative there was circa 1930s.
The surname Memory in England is "Franglaise", probably comes from the Norman conquest, escapees from the French revolution, the Hugenots, abscondees from Napoleons army or like my ancestors, French subjects who just settled here.
Hope you're all not too shocked at these "foreign" revelations!!
It truly is a beautiful and unusual name in England and you should be very proud to be a Mem!
Interesting to find a site with all you Memorys, I wonder if we are all distantly related ?

Memory surname origin and history in France and England

With the assistance of a wonderful lady at a local library I have uncovered the origin of the Memory's.
We are descended from the D'Albini family from Montbrai, La Manche, Normandy. A certain William D'albini (also written as D'Aubigny) was descended from Richard, Count of Normandy. He took the name De Montbrai and after the Norman conquest thereabouts settled in England. The "English" line of the family became Mowbray, the French line became Memery or Memory (along with many other spellings). In the 1790's around the time of the French revolution, refugees from France came over to England and surprise, surprise they were called Memory. Some unfortunate others were left in France, and took part in a demo against Napoleon (June Days ?), these were punished and sentenced to death or transported to French colonies such as Algeria (this happened to my unfortunate ancestor). The Membreys of Stanton Prior is a bit of a strange one, one source says that the name is taken from the place name Membury, the other that the place was named after this family. Hope someone can clear this up!
Hope this info helps!
You will be pleased to know that Winston Churchill and Princess Di were also descended from William D'Albini so we have famous relatives too!
Other notable relatives:

Henri Memery and Professor Laurent Memery- French scientists.

Frederick Carl D'Albini, Jr., of New Braunfels, Texas, 'Bud', as he was nicknamed, was my father. He passed away in 1995, at the age of 58. We are descendents of William. I would like to have contact with other living relatives. At one time, I was in contact with Roger Albini of Canada. The Albini family, who came to North America in 1951, is also descendent of William DeAubigney, or William D'Albini, depending on the chronicles of our history that one studies. Our family carries a genetic auto-immune disorder, a positive gene marker called HLA B-27. If you are related, and know that you carry this marker, there is a genetic study being done at the University of California. I would be interested in hearing from ANYONE who is related to us...wether you are or are not dealing with this disorder. Any answers to this note would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
