Malachi Merry

I have noted that Malachi Merry born 1914 is often listed as the husband of Rhoda Hillman and the father of her children. It is obvious that this is not correct because that Malachi (1914) would have been 70 years old when his last child was born (Benjamin 1784). That Malachi was the real Malachi's uncle. The Malachi who was Rhoda's husband was born in 1741 and was the son of Benjamin (1716), John's other son.

yDNA testing

I am in the process of having my yDNA tested (67 markers) and expect to receive the results in a few weeks.
I am posting this message in the hope that there may be another with the Merry surname who has had DNA testing done. If there is no one else, I challenge all you Merry males to think about it as it may solve a few puzzles about where the name arose and whether or not we are one or several families.

My Merry family came from near Eynsham in Oxfordshire from at least as early as about 1670, and possibly 1555, though our suspected ancestor William Merry was born in Gloucestershire in 1500.

Richard Merry
Adelaide

Merrys in North Dakota

There is a small cemetary located on part of my family's farm in Stutsman County, North Dakota. There are 4 tombstones that we can read the names on. They are Frank Merry, Elma Merry, Florence Merry, and Bruce Merry. My dad remembers hearing stories about the family. They were all siblings and all died tradgecially. None of them lived to be 18. Frank lived to be about 17 and drowned. He was born in 1870, not known where. Elma was drug to death by a horse or died falling from a horse. She was born in 1872. Florence was born in 1880 and died at about 2 or 3. Bruce was born in 1882. He was accidentaly shot by Frank, at least that is the legend. We are trying to look back on the deed for the parents names as we believe that this was a family cemetary and that they would have owned the land. There is also a headstone that simply reads Maury family in memmory of John Buchwalter - Glenn Buckwalter. It is possible that the Merry and Maury families are related. We believe that the Buckwalter and Maury families are.

This cemetary is located in Cusator Township, Stutsman County, North Dakota. It is about 15 miles from Cleveland and Gackle. It is 9 miles from Windsor. And there was a small town about 15-20 miles away named Alfred.

We would love to find anyone who knows more about the story and these families. We think there were other children in the family that did live. Please contact me if you think that you may have a conection.

Jenny

I have some ancestors from Effingham County, Illinois - Thomas Merry and Elizabeth Dunn. Their birthdates were probably between 1840-1852. They had a least three children, Harriett, Ella and a son. Does anyone have any information on this family? Thank you.

Charles Hayden Merry (Born 11/15/1845 Pembroke, ME - Married 07/14/1879, Jefferson, Kansas) married Sabra Thresha Chase. They had 5 Children (Charles Merry - twin, Edward C. Merry - twin, Myrtle L Merry (Penhole), Jessie M Merry (Burnett), Alice Rhoda Merry (Decker).

Charles essentially owned most of the land in North Dakota. He knew and was friends with Teddy Roosevelt, and he was in a book (I am unable to find) Dakota Days - the History of North Dakota published in 1991.

I am unable to find any information on Charles or his children. The Merry name has been past down for many generations as a middle name to all the females in the family. The only names I have been able to follow are Chase and Decker.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have three original Cabinet Card photographs of daughters of William & Charlotte Merry, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo of “Alice Merry, sister of Emery Merry” was taken in Evansville (Rock Co.) WI in about 1880, and she looks to be around age 20. Photo of “America (Mate) Merry” was taken in Platteville (Grant Co.) WI in about 1885-1890, and she looks to be about 22-25.

The third photo is of “Martha Merry Christy and Col. Christy and daughter Beulah”. This was taken by the Omaha Photo Co., identified as “Traveling Artists”, and it looks as if it was taken about 1892 or 1893. Col. Christy looks about mid-50s, Martha looks about 35 and Beulah looks about 6 or 7.

I found Alice in the 1900 census for Platteville, WI, living with parents William and Charlotte Merry. Alice’s DOB was Aug 1862.

In the 1900 census for Ingraham (Mills Co.) IA, I found Joseph Christy with birthdate Mar 1840; Martha C. Christy, born Nov 1856, and daughter “Bulah” born Mar 1887. Living with them was Lucy J. Merry, Martha’s sister, born Sep 1874.

In the IGI, I found a listing for the family of William & Charlotte (Rogers) Merry, with 12 children, three of whom are Martha Caroline Merry (b. Nov 1856), Alice M (b. Aug 1860) and America Mate Merry (b. Oct 1863).

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Merry family.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I'm trying to trace James Robert Merry(Mirrey) b. 4-Jun-1842 Lochlee. Parents Thomas Merry & Agnes Inglis. He moved out to Wasco County , USA around early 1880's. I have letters sent from Crop Hollows & Willow Grove (Bake Oven) These may have been cattle ranches as he talks about branding cattle. He lost contact with family back in Scotland and I would now like to find out what happened to him. Did he marry, have a family, move etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Lesley

Edwin H. & Ellie (Smith) Merry, born 1859 & 1863, lived Saline Co., MO

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Edwin H. Merry and Ellie May (Smith) Merry“, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in Marshall (Saline Co.) MO. The imprint on the front of the Cabinet Card says “Macurdy, 1890 Marshall, MO”, leading to the idea photo was taken in 1890. She looks to be about 25 or so, and he about 30. Clipped to the photo is the obituary of David Smith Merry who died in Perry, OK (no dates), but I found he was born in 1822 in KY, and the obit had to be from 1901-1902.

I found in the 1900 census of Sedalia (Pettis Co.) MO the birthdates of Edwin (Dec 1859) and Ellie (May 1863). In the 1920 census of Marshall (Saline Co.) MO, Edwin H. Merry was age 60, and wife Ellie, 56.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the Merry family.

I am researching the Walter Merry tree, my beginnings begin with Walter Merry born in England in 1576. I have much information concerning his descendants and am willing to share with all. Mostly I am searching for any information concerning Melvina Merry, my great-great grandmother. Her father was Benjamin Merry and she married Dennis Fuller. Any information will be much appreciated. Again, if any one needs any information concerning this line, I will be happy to help.

Good luck in your search.

Dawn

I have just begun to research my husbands ancestry and have readhed a few snags. I am looking for information regarding a Benjamin Merry born Sept. 1860 in Illinois. Married Emma Kedgeau (last name could be wrong) in about 1885. They then resided in North Dakota where their children where born: Clare (b. Apr 1886), Mildred (b. Aug 1888), Walter (b. Nov 1890), Bruce (b. Sept 1892), Florence (b. Jul 1897), and Margery (b. Oct 1898). The family then moved to Montana, where I believe Benjamin died sometime between 1900 and 1910. I have gotten the information from the 1900 census. If anyone has any information that could help please let me know.

Thanks
Jenn
Familysearchr@msn.com

I've run across your Prettyman Merry on some records and it really through me! I thought that the census taker/courts had made a mistake in their handwritting and filing. In your searching, have you run across my grandfather too? I just thought I'd say hi from the grandchild of the "other" Prettyman! bj

Several of the boys including Billie & Robert played Basketball for the First Baptish church in Richmond. Bob later became a Loan Officer for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, CA. I worked for the bank in Richmond. A few years later ( 1968 /1970) Bob died of Cancer of the spine. If this fits with your research, please email me. Pat in NV
LINEAGE OF PRETTYMAN MERRY OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA
Hello,

Several sites on the Internet have this Merry lineage: Prettyman Merry b. ca. 1742, son of Thomas Merry, grandson of Thomas Merry. While documents do prove that Prettyman was the son of Thomas Merry, I can find no evidence of a grandfather named Thomas Merry. Some of what is on the net just seems to be pieced together without any proof.

I did find a DAR application that claimed this fact, and mentioned Apphira Prettyman, but there is no documentation.

In the mean time I have found a much better suggested lineage for Prettyman which contains quiet a lot of secondary documentation, so my question is this: Are there any documents that prove that Prettyman Merry’s grandfather was named Thomas?

Thank you,
Norman Peters
petersnr@aol.com

I have traced my name back to my 3 x great-grandfather, John MERRY. He was born in Godmanchester (near Huntingdon) England about 1792. He came to Haggerston (now part of Hackney) London about 1820 and maried a Bella MERRY who was born in Hawes, North Yorkshire (maiden surname unknown).
They had 3 children, John, George and Stephen.

If any of this sounds familiar I would love to hear from you.

Chris Merry
christopher.merry@ntlworld.com

Merry's of Godmanchester / Huntingdon / Cambridgeshire

I have done some investigation of the Godmanchester/Huntingdon area of UK during the 1901 census asd well as the internet

I believe Alice Merry born in 1893 to be my grandfather's mother as he was registered using his Mother's maiden name. So still none the wiser who his father was and what the reasons were for keeping his mother's maidne name. (Any help welcome)

I believe William Merry Jr b. 1871 married to Martha & father of: George, Frederick, Hilda, Alice, Isabella & Robert
to be my great-great grandfather and his father was George Merry b. c 1835 who married Sarah & was father to William and George. They all seemed to be bricklayer labourer's in Godmanchester/Huntingdon area of UK.

My line as far back as I have it goes to James Merry b. 1806 who married Martha Bently b. 1806

Any further help to get this line further back please let me know.

Two Different Merry Families?

I'm looking for an A.D. Merry who was living in Phoenix, NY in 1897. He was named as Guardian for my grandfather, Thomas Burns and his brother Edward Burns as set forth in the Will of John Kelly. Thomas and Edward were the sons of Patrick Burns and Josephine Kelly Burns, who died in 1893, after the birth of twins, who also died. Josephine's parents were John and Catherine Kelly.

Then I have a Marjorie Agnes Merry, who was born July 10, 1899, in Lewis County, NY. She married Michael Thomas "Mack" Flynn on Aug 15, 1931, I think in Syracuse, NY.

Does anyone have any information on either one of these Merry's?

A BIG thanks to Richard Merry (wherever you are!) for a remarkable piece of service on behalf of MERRY researchers.

All the MERRY entries for Birth and Marriage Registrations in England and Wales, from the start of civil registration in 1837 up to 1900, have been transcribed and made available on the FreeBMD site:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

The site tells you how you can get hold of the certificates.

Richard's also done the Death registrations for 1877-83 and 1930-37, and will gradually add those for the other years.

I'm sure you'd all join me in acknowledging what a wonderful resource this will be for people tracing their MERRY roots in the U.K.

Thanks again.
Sonia
To all Joseph's descendents!

In March 2000 I posted some info on genforum about the possibility of Joseph of Martha's Vineyard (1607?-1710) being linked to the Essex and / or Goucestershire MERRYs in England.

This is SPECULATION based largely on his daughter's unusual name, Bathsheba. However, it seems to be the only possible clue to Joseph's origins that we have. If anyone wants a page of information about the questions and possible links, please e-mail me directly: sonia@m-five.com

Since I posted to genforum, I have explored further at Gloucester Record Office (in person) and Essex Record Office (by e-mail and post). I seem to have exhausted ALL the easily accessible (indexed and catalogued) resources at Gloucester, and all the wills at Essex. I have found NOTHING either to strengthen the hypothetical link, or to weaken it.

I haven't done any research in London at all (Public Record Office, Society of Genealogists, maritime, colonial or commercial resources...). If anyone is ever in a position to do such research, I'll supply further details of all sources consulted so far.

I don't have much time for family history this year, so don't expect rapid developments from here! I don't think the mystery of Joseph's origins is going to be solved quickly. Maybe a chance mention in some other source in twenty years ...!!
If ever ......!!!!

Good luck in all your ancestor-hunting!
Sonia
Michael & Mary Merry - Philadelphia 1800's

Would anyone have any information on a Michael and Mary Merry of Philadelphia? Michael died 19 Oct 1900 (@ 75 yrs); Mary died 11 Jan 1898 (@ 62 yrs). Michael was born in Ireland; occupation is listed as tailor on a couple of censuses. I believe them to be my g-g-g-grandparents, and am trying to find more out about them and other members of the family. If the information that I've gathered so far is correct, they had children by the name of Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth (Lizzie), and John.

Does anyone have ancestors of Ambrose Merry, spouse of Margaret Wickham, dau. of William Wickham of Ulster Co., NY? I've seen connections that go back to Martha's Vineyard but never with sources listed for verification. Reportedly Ambrose was born in Ostego Co., NY (no source), married Margaret Wickham and moved to Noble Co., OH. The first child, Rufus, was born in Milford Twp., Ostego Co., in 1801. My line continues from Ambrose to Calton to Joscephus to Mary Ellen Merry.
