Two Rachels marry in Holmes Co, OH 1833 and 1834

There are two Rachel Metcalfs that marry in Holmes Co, OH in 1833 and 1834. The first marries William Smith Sep 10, 1833 (Cornelius Quick J.P.). The second marries Levy Johnston Nov 9, 1834 (John Darnell, J.P.). The Levy Johnston family moves to Putnam co, IN. This Rachel is likely the daughter of Jacob, as Rachel and Levi name a daughter Micha (Jacob's wife was Micha (Micah Hale)). The second may be a daughter of George (Jacob's brother). Can anyone confirm or refute either?

Moses may possibly be related to the family below. You may want to consult Short Creek Monthly Meeting records in Ohio and Belmont County, OH records.

1767. Abraham MEDCALF m. Mary PYLE at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester Co., PA.

[“Abraham Medcalf, son of James and Margaret (Britton) Midcalf, was born probably in Lancaster Co PA and probably between 1740-1743 (not 1731, as sometimes reported). He died possibly in Baltimore Co MD, where he had moved his family. He was married twice. His first marriage, to Mary Pyle, took place at New Garden Monthly Meeting (Quaker) in Chester Co PA in 1767. Mary died in 1784. Eight children were born of this marriage: Margaret, Moses, James, Jesse, Mary, Phoebe, Abraham P. and David. As his second wife Abraham married Rebecca Morgan in 1786 in Lancaster County. Their children were William, Joshua and Ann Buffington Medcalf. Abraham's children James and Phoebe died in childhood; Moses married in Pennsylvania, around 1805 moved to Harford County, Maryland, and in 1814 to Belmont County, Ohio. The 1760 Lancaster Co PA will of Abraham's father, James Midcalf, has been posted at the Metcalf Gen Forum under "Jas Metcalf(e)/Midkiff will Lancaster Co PA". “ (Medcalf Genforum message board, Sept. 8, 2006. http://genforum.genealogy.com/medcalf/messages/17.html)

11 July 1793.
Re: Metcalf Family Ill Iowa

I believe that your William may be the first-born son of Vachel Metcalf (b~1775) that married the Green sisters. This line is documented in "The Green Tree" by Robert M. Green. Part of the below if from this reference...

From The Green Tree: William Metcalf was the first white settler in Millbrook Twp, Peoria Co., IL. In the spring of 1833, with his wife and two small children and a boy named Amos McRill. He came by wagon from Richland Co., OH. Arriving at French Grove, he built a humble log cabin and fenced a small field and in the spring of 1834 he moved onto the land. The first son born to him after he came to IL was killed in the battle of Shiloh in 1862. William helped organize a Methodist Church in the area. It was destroyed by a tornado in 1858 (From the History of Peoria City and County, Vol. 1 and 2, published in 1912)

William is found in the 1850 census in Peoria, IL, and the birth places reflect that William came to IL between 1833 and 1837. Birth years for family estimated by this reference:
William Metcalf 43	OH
Harriett 41	PA
Mahalia 19	OH
Napolean B.	17	OH
Lucretia 13	IL
Orin 13	IL
William H.	7	IL
Vachel 5	IL
Charlotte M.	1	IL

William is found in the 1880 census in Jackson Twp., Clarke Co., IA:
William 73	OH
Harriett 73	PA
Charlotte 32	IL
Bertha 2	IA (grandaughter)

William is found in the 1885 IA state census at age 77.

An Ancestry World Tree entry by Jim Duggan oystercatcher@bigpond.com has additional details on this line.

I have looked and looked for John Metcalf in Ionia Co. MI. Do you have census records for him there? When was he there? I think I have him in Wayne Co., OH in 1830, but then I lose him. There is a John (58) and Nancy (57) in Knox Co, OH in 1850, but I don't know if this is him or not. I thought that he perhaps married Margaret Edwards, becuase I found a marriage record with about the right timing in Jefferson Co in 1810. Any ideas?

Hi Amy. About 8 years ago you responded to a post I made on this website. I had never checked the site til. For some reason, I guess I just forgot all about it. Anyway, It was great to get your message, though many years later!! I would love to hear from you and find out how everything is going with you and Morgan. Do you still live in Florida? We did live in Simi Valley, CA, then moved to Fresno CA and lived there several years before moving to the bay area, and about 12 years ago, we moved to Paris Tennessee. My husband Kevin has many relatives in Florida, in the Chattahoochee area. Is that anywhere near you? Tell Morgan (Herman) that I remember him as a baby and very small child. If he goes on my myspace, he will see several pics of his family when he was little. I ended up finding his sister Tina a couple years ago and posted them for her to see. She said she didn't have any pics of them when they were growing up. My younger brother, Alan, who would actually have turned 47 tomorrow, passed away unexpectedly in January. It was very tramatic for our family. Well, I hope to hear from you very soon!

Re: Lawson Family of Monroe County Indiana

It was so nice to see your message posted. i have some info that might be helpful to you and maybe you will have some for me as well. I believe your grandmother Lydia was a first cousin to my grandfather Robert Lawson. His parents are Plummer Lawson and Lucresa Michaels. His paternal grandparents are William Lawson and Sabra Ragsdale. Your grandmothers parents are Joseph C. Lawson and Mary Jane Mitchener, married June 26, 1886 in Jackson County. So your great grandfather Joseph and mine Plummer are brothers. Your great grandmother Mary Jane is the daughter of Allen Mitchener and Emily Stewart. She was born on May of 1869 in Salt Creek Township and died April 9, 1939 and is buried in Monroe County Indiana. She had 6 sisters and 3 brothers. The sisters names are Mary Etta (Browning), Anna (Todd), Rebecca Jane (Hillenberger), Lillie (Adams), Margaret (Spicer). Her brothers are Alva, Charles and Thomas Lawson. I am not aware of any Indian lineage but that would be great to kinow. I hope this is helpful to you and if you have any info on the history of William or Sabra (Ragsdale) Lawson please let me know. Thank You.

The 1870 census for Garnettsville, Meade Co., KY has the following family: Marian Metcalf 43, Nancy D. 40, Lewis J. 14, Mary B. 9, James 6, John B. 5, Hettie A. 3, and Marion P. 1/12. All born KY. The date for Lewis J. is consistent to be your Lewis.

The 1910 census shows this Lewis, at age 54 still in Meade KY, with wife Fannie 57, and children Ethel 30 and Bertha 28.

This family did not jump out of the 1880 and 1900 census. They might be there, but it would take more creative looking than I just did.

What sources are you citing that indicate that John was 1/2 Cherokee and Agnus, half Creek? Do you have any records (i.e., birth, death, etc.) for them? Would welcome ANY information you have on them and/or their parents and grandparents, or any suggestions of other sources of information on these people you might be familiar with. Thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer.

Hi Ms Cline- My Lyman Metcalf lived and died in Rushford NY (about 60 miles south West of Genesee County as the crow flies). Maybe he is an ancestor since "Lyman" is obviously an important symbol.
Hello, Chris,

I would dearly love to see anything pertaining to Anthony Metcalf's war service. My email is julipagemorgan@gmail.com. I would be happy to send you what I have on the Maryland Metcalf/Medcalf family. I've gathered a bit on this line in the 1600s-1700s, but haven't gone any further, since I now think Anthony Metcalf was not from this line at all, but, rather, descended from a Metcalf who came from England to Brunswick County, Virginia in 1719. As far as Tennessee, the only thing I have at present is that Anthony's son William was there, as well as Anthony's granddaughter, Betsy Metcalf Driskill. You're welcome to whatever I have, though.
---Juli
