Obit: Robert E. Mileham of Iowa (1930-2008)

Robert Everett Mileham, son of Homer E. and Nellie M. (Brennan) Mileham, was born January 26, 1930 near Cylinder, Iowa. A lifelong resident of Palo Alto County, he received his education at St. Mary’s Academy in Emmetsburg, graduating in 1948. In 1951 Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, making rank of Sergeant and serving until 1953, when he was honorably discharged. Bob returned to Emmetsburg where he was employed at Mileham Produce until it closed in 1968.
On October 10, 1960 Bob was united in marriage to Mary M. Washington at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. To this union three children were born.
Bob spent a majority of his time working in the manufacturing field, working as a purchasing agent (Pamline, Berkley’s, and Skyjack) and as a plant manager for Durnell Engineering. Never one to sit still very long, Bob held various other jobs both before and after retirement, the last being custodial work at the Emmetsburg Post Office.
Bob was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the church choir. Bob had sung in the Many Voices Choir for several years. He was a very talented roller skater and still enjoyed skating. Bob will be remembered as a man who loved people. He rarely missed meeting his friends for coffee each morning and afternoon. His giving spirit continued even upon his death, as Bob wished to be an organ and tissue donor so that others had the opportunity to enjoy life as he did.
Bob died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Homer Mileham, Jr. and James Mileham; and an infant son.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Mileham of Valparaiso, Indiana and John Mileham of Kanawha, Iowa; a granddaughter, Kaleigh Lindholm of Hibbing, Minnesota; as well as many other relatives and friends.

DNA Project update

Hello cousins,
1. We have not yet found the genetic connection between American Milams and English Milams. It is proving to be very elusive. So far, we have Y-DNA tested 8 UK-"Milams"........ 3 Milams, 2 Milehams, 1 Mylam, 1 Milum, 1 Millam. Interestingly, the 2 Milehams are in separate and distinct family trees and Haplogroups. Initially, it looked as if the Mileham with Norfolk ancestors was going to partially match up with us American Milams, but once the full test result was in, he did not match. :-(( So, the quest goes on. Do what you can do to help.

Currently, the primary focus is on locating Milehams, in both UK & US, for DNA testing. They seem to be the most fertile area for finding new information needed to better understand our Milam ancestry. FYI: there was a Mileham family in Delaware in mid-1700s, possibly earlier. Some of them migrated to NC, AL, KY, and points west. It's very possible they have living descendants today. DNA testing of their living male descendants could prove vitally important to us.

Remember, besides these Delaware Milehams, there was the well-known marriage of Samuel Mileham to Martha Gardner on September 8, 1724 in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia. There was even a Mileham in Plymouth Colony about 1675, as well as records of other early American Milehams. There is even an Allen Mileham (b. 1800), and his descendants, found in Tazewell & Lee Counties of Virginia, and our family trees. Allen Mileham is believed to be the g-grandson of John Milam of Halifax County. In other words, any number of these early Milehams could have become Milams in later generations. Who can say what the original spelling was, especially considering how many different spellings are often encountered in records regarding the same persons. We may have been Milehams originally, as has been often speculated.

In other words, some Milehams and Milams could very well be related, and DNA testing could prove it, or at least shed great light upon understanding the Mileham-Milam relationship.

So, again, the current focus is on locating Milehams, in both the UK & US, for DNA testing. Do what you can do to help locate Milehams for DNA testing..... for instance, look for them in your local phone book, call and discuss this with them. "There's GOLD in them there hills!".... help find it!

2. We have DNA testing underway for a new 2nd generation Milam Family of America branch.... Zachariah Milam's branch. recall: Zachariah is believed to be the son of patriarch Thomas Milam of Bedford County, Virginia. This very good news! We still have a few branches which have not been tested yet.... help find them. We need to verify them all.

3. Recently, we did SNP tests on a diverse group of American Milams in our DNA database to see if we could nail down more specifically where our Milams originated geographically. Prior to these SNP tests, our Haplogroup was only "predicted" to be R1b1c..... which is found in Western Europe, and predominately in the British Isles. The SNP tests VERIFIED our Haplogroup as: R1b1c. Recall, there have been rumors/speculation in the past that our Milams were from Wales, and Scotland, and Ireland. I was hoping to pinpoint the specific area of the British Isles, but that didn't happen. None of our 5 SNP test results provided that level of detail for some reason.

So, I guess we will have to discover that by comparison of Y-DNA testing results and traditional genealogy research.

More later. Do what you can to help. (I'm wearing down.)

See the latest Milam Family DNA Project overview at: http://www.milamroots.com/dna/index.html

Take care,
Oliver
Hello,
Living male Milehams are being sought for DNA testing for genealogy purposes. The Milam Family DNA Project group will pay for the testing. The goal is to determine whether the Mileham and Milam families are related, and if so, identify common ancestors. It could be very beneficial to researchers of both surnames.

FYI: The tesing is done entirely by mail, and is simple and painless (no blood).

Please help locate potential Mileham candidates for Y-DNA testing. Contact me at: Milam@Milam.com Also, see more details at: http://www.Milam.com.

Thanks for any help,
Oliver Milam
I am trying to find out anything about my grandfather Joseph Mileham. I would like to find out when he died. I believe it was around 1926 or 1927. He was married to Marie (Fair) Mileham. I can't seem to find a death certificate for him. He lived in Cook County, Chicago Il. They had four children. Joseph, Warren, William (my father) and sister Jeanne. Thanks for any help. Maureen Sagiao

samuel mileham

I have found 3 seperate records for what seems to be the same man - his birth date, wife , marriage date and place, wife (martha gardner) , and at least one if not all of his children and their info is allways the same . The only discrepencies are his place of birth and his parents - has anyone else found this? has anyone been able to resolve it? please let me know somthing this is driving me nuts. I've listed the info for each samuel below along with parents.

Samuel Mileham brn:1699 lancaster VA
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 bedford VA
father: John Milam brn: 1610 VA ( I know the date is impossible- it's not my mistake I swear)
mother: Christian
children: archibald 1729 VA, john 1725 VA, thomas 1727 VA

Samuel Milam/Mileham brn:1700boston MA
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 lancaster VA
father: Joseph Milam brn: 1652 boston MA ( oddly enough josephs' father is listed as john milam brn:1610 berkshire England - wife: Christian mmm where have I seen that before?)
mother:Hannah King
child: John Milam brn:1720 lancaster VA

Samuel Mileham brn:1700 Wales
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 lancaster VA
father: not listed
mother: not listed
children: John Milam brn 1725 lancaster VA
Thomas Milam brn 1727 lancaster
Archibald Milam brn 1729 lancaster

There are 10 children listed for John of 1610 and Christian, Samuel is the only one whose name is spelled Mileham - and the only one with an unreasonable birth date. Joseph Milam is one of the children listed - and he is also listed as samuels' father. I got all of this info from lds.org, steelpenny.net and rootsweb.com.

Lewis C. and Elizabeth C. Mileham

I'm the great-granddaughter of Lewis C. Mileham (b. Sept 26, 1853 in Indiana, m. Jennie Belle DeHaven). Lewis had a sister Elizabeth C. "Lizzie" (b. Dec 29, 1866, d. May 5 1959, m. Henry Warren Parks) who is not linked in any way to Lewis C. in the ancestry.com database perhaps because their parents are not yet identified, and that is my question -- who are their PARENTS and other upline? I understand there were other siblings, at least one girl who married a Jablonsky/Jablonski/Zablonski in Chicago IL (this is according to a tape made by my grandmother c. 1978). I turn up nothing in a search for this sister. I have turned up the following who may be related: A.K. Mileham, and Lewis Mileham who could be father and grandfathers etc of Lewis C. and Elizabeth C. but I can't make a definite connection. It's also possible that's an error and they aren't related at all. In my searches today, and from the Milam family page,
I notice that Mileham is a less-common spelling, so might
make this line easier to spot? also that Lewis was a fairly
common men's name among all spellings of Mileham/Milam families. Further, I've noticed that it was extremely common to name a child after his grandparents, hence my curiosity about candidates above.

Milehams

Hi,
I know a little about the Milehams of USA, but I would like to know much more. So here are some dumb questions for anyone who can help me.

1. Can someone give me a general summary of the Milehams in the USA? When did they immigrate to America and where did they go, etc. Whatever you can share would be fine.
2. Know of any Milehams who changed the spelling to Milam/Milum/Milham/etc., or vice-versa?

I maintain the Milam Family website at: http://www.Steelpenny.net and would like to expand the Mileham family information listed there. Can anyone help? A multi-generational gedcom file would be a good start.

Thanks for any help, Oliver Milam
