Mary Margaret Monaghan

My father was an identical twin born in Coffeyville Kansas 12/31/1923. I only know his mother's name was Mary Margaret Monahan and his father's last name was Pope. The twins were named Melvin (my father) and Elvin Pope. Around 1927 the parents divorced and one child went to each parent. My father went with his father, who later abandoned him at a Catholic orphanage in the area. His mother took Elvin and then died a year or two later of tuberculoses (sp?). My father died without giving any more details than this - his anger was that great. I would appreciate any information anyone has out there so I can find that side of my family. Thank you.

MariAnn -- Yes, I would be interested in all of the information you have on James and Robert L. Monaghan. I have a number of items related to the family: 1) A chronicle of James Monaghan from "Portrait Biographical Album of Lake County, Illinois," September 1891. This document contains a photo or sketch of James Monaghan; 2) A brief description of James' son, William, from the "History of the Illinois Ninety-Sixth Regiment, which fought in the US Civil War. William is described by his company commander as 6 feet 4 1/2 inches, a farmer and an "excellent soldier," who died immediately after the war "from consumption." 3) The obit for James' brother Owen Monaghan; 4) A picture and description of the Port Clinton, Ill (now Highland Park) lighthouse that Owen operated from 1853-1861. It was the first lighthouse on Lake Michigan; 5) A 1931 interview with Owen's daughter, Julia Monahan, (this wing family dropped the "g" from their surname). There is a photo of Julia. She was 81 at the time of the interview and living in Highland Park, Ill. Julia's older sister, Mary Josephine Monahan, married William Dennis Cox (1843-1915) in 1872 at Highland Park. They had 10 children, one of whom, Grover Cox (1884-1963), was my grandfather. Please let me know if you would like to have any of the information listed above. My direct email address is bcox@thealliance.net. I grew up in the Chicago area and currently live in Virginia. Best regards -- Bill

Hi Greg

Mary Ann Monaghan was born in 1888 to John Monaghan and Julia nee Matthews in the Braidwood, NSW district, so I don't think we're related.

There seem to be lots and lots of Monaghans about at that time, and in Braidwood especially there were a number of Monaghan families and probably they are related. My Monaghans (Mary Ann's grandparents) arrived from Ireland in 1840.

I have looked further since my original post above and it seems that this Mary Ann is not my ancestor.

Good luck with your research and thanks for taking the time to reply.

Angela

Graeme, I'm sorry but I never saw your post in 2005. I would be happy to share all the information I have about James and Owen Monaghan who came to Lake county in Illinois about 1840. My Family tree, "Bloniarz-Lendabarker Tree" is on Ancestry.com but is "private" so you would have to request permission to see it. Just send the request. Maybe we can then share further documents. I'd love to know more about the Monaghans in Austrailia. Thanks.

James Monaghan, Sr. of Wauconda was my gr-gr-grandfather. My gr-grandfather, Robert L., was a son of James and Eliza Lane. I have been working on the family for years and just recently found James' obit. I also have most of his probate file and plat of survey of his property. I corresponded with a Cox family member in the past and we exchanged some info but now I have more if you'd like to share. I also have Robert's Pension File if you're interested. Hope to hear from you.

I am restoring an old cemetery in Fairmont, West Virginia. I have a Bridget (Quinn) Monaghan and a Patrick Monaghan buried there. Both are from County Sligo, Bridget possibly from Tubercurry. She is thought to have emigrated in 1846 at the age of 16 on the ship the Alhambra. She and Patrick were married in 1852 and had their first child in 1854. Patrick, Jr. was followed by Mary (died in infancy), Sarah, John, Katherine and Margaret Marian. When both Bridget and Patrick died in 1871 within a month of each other, their children were aged 3 to 15.

I know Patrick, Jr. died in 1904 and is buried at Holy Cross cemetery here in Fairmont. Sarah may have married into a local family although I don't yet know which one. John also died young, and Katherine and Margaret Marian are listed as servents in two different households in the 1880 Census.

Monaghans of County Leitrim - Patrick Monaghan c1854
Hi there,

Currently seeking information on my Monaghan family.

My gt-gt grandfather Denis Monaghan (1881) moved from Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, Ireland to Bo'ness, Scotland with his older brother Patrick (1879) some time between 1885 and 1900. They were born in CORNANEANE, KILLASNET, County Leitrim. I know that their father was Patrick Monaghan (c1854) and their grandfather was John Monaghan (c1830).

Patrick c1854 married a Catherine in Lurganboy, Co Leitrim in 1874 (also Monaghan, her father Michael / Mick Monaghan of Lisnabrack, mother unknown). I have been using the various online databases (some free of charge, others very costly) but have come to a blank. I realise that many of the records were destroyed, but am hoping that someone recognises some names / dates etc from their own tree.

I have spoken with my grandfather who thinks that the family originally did not come from Co Leitrim - perhaps Sligo or Mayo as these are names he can remember his grandfather talking of.

I think that John Monaghan / Monahan c1830 married either a Bridget MacHugh or a Matilda Rooney / Runian.

I cannot be sure of all the names, but I think that Patrick c1854 and Catherine had the following children:

Anne 1860
Bridget 1853
Bryan 1853??
Daniel 1853??
Denis 1857
Edward 1856??
James1856
John 1858
Mary 1855
Owen 1861
Patrick 1854

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Michelle Monaghan

James Monahan arrived at Lockport, NY in 1832. He was a lock tender and married Eliza Lane there. James Monahan's brother, Patrick Owen Monahan, lived in Deerfield Lake, Illinois and at Highland Park, Illinois. He came to Chicago in 1835 (c) to join his brother James. James had purchased Owen's time from the British army in Nova Scotia by sending the commanding officer $100. The two brothers moved to Lake County, Illinois in 1837, where they became farmers. By the time of his death James owned 412 acres in Wauconda Township (section 11). Three of his sons fought in the US Civil War. His son, William, was in the 96th Illinois infantry and marched in Sherman's army across Georgia to the sea. From 1856 to 1860, Owen operated the federal government's lighthouse at Port Clinton, Illinois (now Highland Park). He was appointed to this position on July 1, 1856 by James Guthrie, secretary of the US Treasury. Owen lived in the lighthouse with his family until 1861. His daughter Julia is my great aunt, and his daughter, Mary Josephine, is my great grandmother. Mary and Julia attended school in the lighthouse. Mary Josephine married William Dennis Cox (b. 1845 Ireland) in 1876. William died in 1917 and Mary died January 1, 1929. Their son, Grover, married Margaret Culkin (Chicago) on October 27, 1909 at Highland Park, IL. They had eight children all of whom are now deceased. [The Monahan name is alson speeled with a "g."]

obit for Uriah Monaghan, born 1827, Canada, died 1902, Kansas

Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, Kansas:
Monaghan Uriah 09/13/1827 10/29/1902 46 11

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Nov. 6, 1902, page 6:
Uriah Monaghan
Last Thursday afternoon at one o'clock the funeral services were held over the remains of Uriah Monaghan, who died on Wednesday evening. The funeral took place at the family residence in the north part of town, where the Monaghans have lived for more than thirty years. Widely known, as Mr. Monaghan has been, it was a shock to his great number of friends to hear last week that the old man had been stricken with paralysis. The stroke came on early Tuesday morning, and though he lived for two days, Mr. Monaghan was not conscious after that time. Rev. McElroy conducted the funeral services, and a great many were present to pay their last respects to a good old friend.
Uriah Monaghan was born in September 13, 1827, near London, Canada. He was married there to Mary Elizabeth McIntosh. In 1870 Mr. Monaghan came out to Kansas and settled on the old homestead claim which has ever since been the family home. The family followed him the next year. Of a very large family of children, eight survive among whom Mrs. Mike Cosgrove, formerly of Minneapolis; Mrs. Cox; Mrs. Charles Erbentraut, who still lives here, Uriah and Will Monaghan of Junction City and Charles who lives here, are the best known to Minneapolis people. The wife and mother died a year ago. Mr. Monaghan was a large heavily built man, and during his good health a man of activity. For a long time his health had been very poor and his age was against him, for the old man was in his 76th year. Sincere sorrow is expressed on all sides at Mr. Monaghan's death.

(There are a few other Monaghans buried in this cemetery.)
My ancestors were Francis Power and Alice Twibill, who came to the US between 1817 and 1819 (based on the birthplaces of their children recorded in the family bible). They were married 14 April 1813 in the "Ireland, Co. Monnahan, Province of ----- (and they really just drew a line), Town of Castleblany)
The bible record says Francis Power and Alice Twibill were born in Monnahan (sic), but says Alice was born in Castleblaney.
Their children were named John, William, Mary, Francis, James, Eliza, Twibill, Thomas and Mary Holiday (and yes, that is her name - it's in the bible!)
Does anyone have any information on their families?
margaretrutledge@earthlink.net.
Thank you.

Did you check the actual death certificate? Often a certificate of Death will show all previous marriages and children born. It may also show date and place of birth and years in the country if not born in the country which let's face it can really help. You could also check his headstone if he has one and find out who the grant holder is of where he is buried or who organised his cremation. What does your mother or father's birth certificate say about him? His will may also be of value. I recently have had great luck with a couple of wills. One revealed a 2nd marriage no one living knew about.
Best of luck.

It may be a coincidence, but I have a Thomas Monaghan born 1821 in Dunmore, Galway, who moved to Wolverhampton in 1850 and married there. The marriage certificate gives his father's name as Martin. Unfortunately, I don't know if Thomas was born in Dunmore town, parish, or barony. Have you found Michael in the English censuses? Thomas was married and his son baptized at the Catholic Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul in Wolverhampton. The same for Michael and Ellen? I don't know if any of this is useful. Can you find a Patrick Monaghan in Griffith's in Dunmore?

im trying to find some information about my grandfather however as he died when my mother was very young and my grandmother has now passed away we have no way of knowing who he was. there is no date of birth or anything. all i know is that he was called patrick monaghan, he was born in ireland and died in 1969 in manchester. he lived on tank row in belle vue and wasnt maried to my nana ruby. apparently he had another family in ireland. i dont know if this means anything to anybody but if it does please let me now. also any advice would be great. ive check death records and found nothing.
