Hello everyone
I am looking to find info on the Morrisseys of Chicago for my boyfriends family. They were involved with the Chicago Fire Dept. His maternal grandmother was Lourdine (nee Nolan) Morrissey. I was told the Nolans also had 5 sons who all died serving in jail. A bunch of bad boys, I would guess. Any info would be appreciated. But we are not related. If you are interest in getting your DNA tested join a project. If you are male Morrissey join this project. I got the 67 markers done. Probably over kill.

You could do 37, 25 or 12 markers. If you sign up with a project, the price is a little lower. I did not start this project, another Mike Morrissey did. My DNA is the first one with James Morrissey b.c. 1800 County Waterford.

Mike Morrissey
Morrissey Surname Board Owner
Morrissey Mailing List Owner

Rosemary A. McGovv Morrissey Obituary

This obituary appeared in my hometown paper - thought someone might be interested.

Rosemary A. McGoff Morrissey of Vestal

Rosemary A. McGoff Morrissey, a resident of Vestal, New York, formerly of the Greenridge Section of Scranton, died Tuesday at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, New York, after a brief illness. Rosemary and her husband, Patrick Morrissey, would have celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, May 13, 2008. Born in Philadelphia, and educated in Scranton, Rosemary attended St. Paul's School and graduated from Bishop Hannon High School. She was a graduate of Maywood College where she received her Master's degree in social work. Upon graduation, she worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, New York, and continued to work there until she found her true calling as a full-time wife and mother. Although her husband and her children were the most important persons in her life, her compassion, understanding and genuine heartfelt caring made everyone she interacted with feel that way. She is a person who will never be forgotten because of the example she was and the strength she exhibited throughout her life. Also surviving are a son, Matthew and daughter, Grace, at home; her mother, Kathleen McGoff, Scranton; her two brothers, Christopher and wife, Claire, Silverspring, Maryland, Bob and wife, Kim, Lorton, Virginia; and her sister and best friend, Jennifer McDonald and husband, Terry, Dunmore. Many beautiful nieces and nephews survive, who loved her very much. Her father, J. Robert, a prominent Funeral Director in Scranton, who was her emotional inspiration, preceded her in death.

There will be a Mass celebrated for her friends in the Vestal area held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Vestal, by the Rev. John Putano, Pastor. Friends may call prior to the Memorial Mass between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the McGoff Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 1401 Capouse Avenue, Scranton, with Mass celebrating her life to be held at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, Penn Avenue. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Friday between the hours of 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Sometime in or before 1900 she married John Walsh of St. Louis who raised her son James Schaeffer. John died sometime after 1920 and she did not marry again until after1930 and before May of 1932 when she married Laurence Morrissey. He was almost 10 years younger than Mary. They are buried together in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis MO; she died in 1941 and Laurence died on April 15, 1946.

If anyone can confirm this or has any other information about this woman or any of her husbands (there MAY be more), please let me know.

Desperately seeking (!) connections to my great-grandfather William Morrissey of Templemore, Tipperary, Ireland. He was born between 1825 and 1833, married Sarah Sweeney at Templemore 1850. He served in the British Army from 1846 to 1869. On his discharge the family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Over part of that period there was a John Morrissey in the Regiment (court martialed and discharged 1858), also born Templemore, but I don't know if they were related. William's father may have been named Walter, but I don't know any more, so information on him would be very interesting. Possible connections to the Mackie family.

.
Seeking help to trace a line on John Morrissey, sentenced to 4 years “penal servitude” in May 1858 at his Court Martial in Barbados on 21 May 1858. Enlisted (49th Foot) 28 October 1848 at Templemore, Tipperary, age 18. No further trace so far although I believe it was the custom at that time for the prisoner to be handed over to the civil authority as he was also discharged from the Army on sentencing. This was the same British regiment in which my gr.grandfather William Morrissey served, at the same time- - maybe related, but no evidence.

Saunders Co, Nebraska Morrissey's

Am looking for information on Edward Morrissey who was a farmer near Yutan in Saunders Co. He was born in Ireland in the 1850's, immigrated about 1881 and he died in 1948. His wife was Mary Dwyer. Known children were:
Margaret
John Lawrence
Edward
Anna
William H.
Julia

Edward and his sister Mary Hannan are noted as out of town visitors at the 1913 funeral of another Edward Morrisey in Galesburg, IL. Given the age spans of the people involved, I believe that Ed in Galesburg was an uncle to the ones in Nebraska. They must have been closely related if they traveled 400 miles in 1913 for the funeral. I do know for sure they were not his own children.

Mary Hannan also married her husband William 1885 in Galesburg, IL.

Would like to correspond with any relative of Mary Morrissey, who lived in Moline, Illinois. She was the daughter of Roger Morrissey. She was born December 15, 1908 and died April 2, 1997 in Davenport, Iowa.

She was quite the genealogist and I am looking to find what happened to all her genealogy works. She taught courses in library usage at Black Hawk College and retired in 1983 as professor emerita.

She had a sister, Adorine Morrissey Smith who lived in the Chicago area.

I would appreciate any help I could get from relatives. Mary's father and my husbands grandfather (Patrick) were brothers.

My great grandfather, Patrick MORRISSEY, was a lightweight boxer who supposedly made it to the USA from Dungarvon, Ireland and won the 'Golden Gloves'. He was also supposedly one of Roosevelt's Rough Riders! He came back to Dungarvon and married Bridget DUNNE (N Ireland) and they had 11 children including my grandmother, Mary Josephine MORRISSEY born in Dungarvon, County Waterford, Ireland in the 1920's. He was buried in St Mary's Church, Dungarvon. Does any one know any more about either the MORRISSEY family or DUNNE family?

Patrick Morrissey, hanged for murdering his mother on September 6, 1872, and Jack Gaffney, hanged for murdering a bar patron on February 14, 1873, hold a unique place in history as they were hanged by a man who went on to become the President of the United States. At this time the law designated the County Sheriff to be the executioner and carry out the order of the court. The Sheriff of Erie County was Grover Cleveland.

I am not related to this family, I'm just passing on this information, which comes from a webpage titled "Regional Studies Northeast."
Mary and Patrick Morrisey

Mary Morrisey came to U.S.A. from Ireland when she was 17 or 18 years. She married John O'Hare in Illinois or Wisconsin. They had 3 children, Margaret, James and John. Mary's husband, John O'Hare was killed in the Civil War. The children were then adopted by their Uncle, Patrick Morrisey of Appleton WI. (1970 Outgamie Co WI Census, 43, born Ireland, wife Margaret.) Living next door to Patrick in the 1870 census is evidently his father, Patrick Morrisey (83 yrs b. Ireland) and his wife Ellen.
Mary Morrisey later married James O'Connor, and after he died, John Summers. Mary Morrisey O'Hare's daughter later married George Greenwood, and they lived in Menominee County, Michigan; and Wood and Marinette Counties Wisconsin; and eventually out to Centralia, Washington.

Does anyone know where the Morriseys were from in Ireland?
Thank you.

Ancestry.com Newspaper article:
Historical Newspapers > "Oshkosh Daily Northwestern" (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) > 1969 > February > 8, page 15; (Ancestry.com image #7.)

If you descend from a Timothy Morrissey family that settled in or near Waukau, Wisconsin, there is a wonderful family history feature article on this family. They emigrated from Ireland.

I do not do research on this family but thought I should post this message since it is such a thorough and family history-filled article. It is a MUST read if you have this surname.

The family, as best as I can determine, has these people in it:
Timothy Morrissey (arrived in US about 185. He fled Ireland with four brothers. He married Sybil RODNEY. Children: Tim, Anna (Sister M. Giovanna); Nellie, William, Rodney, James, Mary (James & Mary = Twins), Sybil m. Lark BETRY, George, & dau. who died in her teens.

Family offiliated with a HANNON family.

John Morrissey (lived west of Waukau) -Children: Peter, Dennis, Mary.

James Bodley Morrissey (m. Hannah O' BRIEN) - 13 children.

Michael Morrissey (affiliated with WILEY family)

Timothy had a Great Granddaughter named Sara Jane Morrissey. Affiliated with MCLAREN family.

I hope this helps some of you.

My greatgrandparents were MARY KENNEDY who married PATRICK WHITE at Windgap, Kilkenny in 1858. The Kennedy and White families were from the townland of Bawnreigh on the Kilkenny/Tipperary border. Mary's sister was ELLEN KENNEDY born about 1850.
ELLEN KENNEDY married THOMAS MORRISSEY on 17 November, 1872 at Windgap. Thomas was a constable. Some of the children of Ellen and Thomas were
Lawrence born 1873, Edmund born 1875, Mary Anne born 1876 and Catherine born 1878. Other siblings may have been Thomas, John and Monica.
I think Thomas Morrissey may have been transferred to Kilcool in Wicklow then finally moved to Dublin.
I would like help with any information on this family.
Regards Denise in Australia

any info, please email omgwlf@yahoo.com ... i think Glenn's parents were Donald Robinson and Anna Morrissey who died when Glenn was young -- he, was then raised by his grandparents and given the family name, Morrissey -- which should be connected to John and Catherine Morrissey.
Glenn Robinson Morrissey (if alive) should be near 70 years of age and may reside in the NV / CA area

Am told he has children (# unknown) with a T.Bordes of NY -- marital status unknown -- and with Judith Gail Burrell of PA.
I would be the result of that union, his daughter, Robin L Morrissey -- born 9/19/66, Anaheim, CA.

any information greatly appreciated ... even a gravesite if Glenn has already passed away ... thank you in advance.
Mouse (Robin)

My Joseph MORRISSEY was from (according to family history) County Limerick. He married Ellen KEARNEY in St. John's, Newfoundland in ~1830. They had 2 children, possibly four. Bridget was the oldest. She married a WHITTEN in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Next in line was my great great grandfather, John MORRISSEY. He married Elizabeth HENNESSEY in St. John's, Newfoundland in ~1860.

In 1867, my great grandmother, Hannah MORRISSEY, was born. In ~1870, John died at sea. Elizabeth remarried Patrick LEDWELL. They moved to Chicago in 1872 and had 6 children together.

In 1886, Hannah married John Joseph O'TOOLE, Sr. in Chicago.

My greatgrandmother's sister was ELLEN KENNEDY born about 1845. She married Thomas MORRISSEY on 17 November 1872 at Windgap Catholic Church, Kilkenny. The family lived at Bawnreigh, Tipperary. Thomas was a Constable.
Some of the children born to Thomas and Ellen were Lawrence born 1873, Edmund born 1875, Mary Anne born 1876 and Catherine born 1878. I think this family then moved to Co.
John Morrissey and Catherine Baxter

Hi, I've hit a wall that I can't seem to break through. I am trying to find any and all information on John Morrissey who married Catherine Baxter. The information I have is sketchy but we believe he was born in Ireland and was the first of our ancestors that immigrated to Canada. We think he must have ended up in New Brunswick as what information we have on their children show them being born in St. John New Brunswick. We believe he was born in or right around 1814 and died in December of 1894. I have no idea where Catherine came from or any birth or death dates. Family information shows three children, Edmund A., Thomas (born 11/3/1861), and James Jeremiah (born 12/4/1868). What little record I've been able to find online also show a son by the name of John. Descendants of these Morrissey's left Canada and settled in central MA. Any and all leads are welcomed!

I am looking for information about Harry Morrissey, b. 8 Oct 1892. He married Lily Herman May 1918, and they had 3 daughters. Family stories say Harry was an orphan, who somehow travelled to the US from Ireland, but the 1920 census indicates he was born in WI. Either way, I would like to know who his parents were, along with any siblings he may have had.
I would also appreciate any info on how to trace him back to Ireland.

Thanks much,
Laurie

James/Bridget Morrissey - born in Ireland, lived in CT

My research shows that James and Bridget both came over from Ireland in 1850. James would have been 20 and Bridget 21. They lived in New Milford, Litchfield County, CT in 1860 with children John, James, Mary & William. I found them there in 1900 with son James. Their son, John (b:~1854), at some point, moved to Waterbury, CT and married Mary Lynch. They raised their family in Waterbury - children Charles (my grandfather, born ~1886), George, Francis and Harold.

I can't find any info on where my ancestors came from in Ireland. Mary is buried in Waterbury with her children, but I don't have info on husband John. Maybe with his parents, James and Bridget in New Milford?

Do these names sound familiar to anyone out there?

Patrick Morrissey B:IRE~1828 lived in Connecticut

Looking for info on my ancestors. From what I have found, Patrick came from Ireland before 1860. The 1860 census shows him living in Hartford, CT with wife Hannah and 1 yr old son, John, along with an older couple (parents?), Michael and Mary. I show him there until 1880. I believe son, John, moved to Waterbury, CT and married Mary (Lynch?). According to the 1910 census, they had children Charles (my grandfather), George, Francis and Harold, who all grew up in Waterbury. I have visited the cemetery in Waterbury but my grandfather died when my dad was 1 yr old (1919), so we don't know much about this side of the family. Does this sound familiar to anyone out there?
