CURTISS MOSES

Seattle Times, The (WA) - October 19, 1989
Deceased Name: CURTISS MOSES, STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
During his 40-year career as a structural engineer for the city of Seattle, Curtiss J. Moses supervised the inspection and approval of structural designs for hundreds of city buildings.
He was not above rejecting designs he felt would be unsafe, and he had on occasion returned to a project after hours to help an architect or builder iron out problems, said his son, L. Wayne Moses of Seattle.
''He was strict. He believed that things should be done right.
But on the other hand, he believed you had to read the (city building) codes and be practical about your interpretation of them,'' the son said.
Curtiss Moses, 94, who in 1962 retired as supervising senior structural engineer for the city, died here last Saturday. A private family service was held yesterday.
Born in Northfield, Minn., Moses spent much of his youth in the Seattle area.
He was a veteran of World War I, serving with the 5th Machine Battalion, Company A of the famous 2nd Division in France. After the Armistice, he joined the army of occupation and served in Germany repairing roads before returning to Seattle to finish his University of Washington studies in engineering.
Moses was hired by the Seattle Building Department in 1923. His responsibilities included supervising building-design approval for issuance of building permits.
''Everything had to have his final approval structurally,'' his son said.
''He was a very practical, dedicated individual in his enforcement of the structural provisions of the city's building ordinance,'' said Harold Roe of Seattle, who worked with Moses in the city department for four years during the mid-1950s.
"'He was reasonable,'' Roe said. ''He understood the verbiage of the code.''
Roe said Moses had participated in major revisions of the city code. ''Interpretation was very important, and he would establish just what to do by making the clarifications that were in line with the intent of the code,'' Roe said.
After the 1949 earthquake in Seattle, Moses enlisted several structural engineers in private practice to reevaluate the safety of several Seattle buildings.
That effort led to establishment of a professional organization, Structural Engineers Association of Washington. He was a life member of that organization.
He also was a member of the Washington Engineers Club, the UW Alumni and Doric Lodge 92 of Masons.
He was awarded the city of Seattle's official service award emblem in 1959.
L. Wayne Moses said his father was an avid gardener, who in his retirement years cared for 300 rhododendrons on an acre of property in Lake Forest Park. He also did some consulting work as a private structural engineer.
Besides his son, Moses is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances; three other sons, Robert, Bainbridge Island, Kenneth, Bothell, and William, Mukilteo; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Laila McRae, Langley, Whidbey Island, and Helen Howe, Bethesda, Md.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or a favorite charity.
He shows up in Pleasant Township, Allen County, Indiana in the 1850 census--he is listed by himself and, if his headstone is to be believed, was 20 years old. At 28 he married Almira Linscott in 1858 and they had 7 children. He is buried in Allen County. Most census records say he was born in Virginia. I'm trying to make the connection between Virginia and Indiana. Can anyone help? Thank you.

H. MOSES - 1840 Floyd County, GA Federal Census

Would anyone know or have information on who the "H. MOSES" listed on Page: 252 of the 1840 Floyd County, GA, District 923, Federal Census might be??? I am researching my GGGrandfather, Henry MOSES, who is noted to have been born in 1816 in Georgia (per later census & tombstone dates). He married in 1842 in Marion County, MS. I can not locate anyone of his age bracket in any of the 1840 censuses in Georgia, Alabama, or Mississippi except this one household. Not sure if the "H" stands for an older Henry or not. There were two (2) males in the household: one was male between 20 - 30 and one between 60 - 70. There were also two females: one was between 10 - 15, and one was between 20 - 30. I do not know if my Henry had siblings or any information on his parents other than in the 1880 Federal Census, Henry indicates both parents were born in Georgia. I am happy to share information on my Henry MOSES; so, if you think you connect, would love to hear from you

I am researching the Moses surname in Burke County, NC. Alfred Moses married Ellen Elmira Farr on 14 Jun 1860. They had children: Jesse Alfred, Ann Elizabeth, James Wesley, John William, Daniel Wilford, Joe Davis, Clement, Waitstill, Mack Henderson, Isaac Avery, Ben Davis, and Frank Tull Moses. I believe, but have not confirmed, that Alfred Moses was the son of Jesse and Cynthia Moses, both born about 1800. I would love to correspond with anyone related or also researching. I have a lot of names and dates but still a lot missing! You can contact me directly as well at valleycem@yahoo.com

Multiple Moses Database/Information

Hi all....I am currently entering a lot of
information into a database and have a page on
myfamily.com. I don't have all families on yet..
but I have 1000s of names left to enter. Just
to give you an idea though, here is a bit of my
direct line:
John Moysis (came over from Scotland, b. 1600s)
Aaron Moses
Mark Moses
Samuel Moses
Abraham Moses
Kimbal Alonzo Moses
Eugene Moses
Letha Louvilla Moses m. Henry Holloway
Treva Gail Holloway m. Wesley Scott
Howell Scott m. Deborah Davis
Denise Scott (myself)

Anyhow, there are a ton of lines. I met Liz Moses Culp
online and she has done a ton of research. She sent me a
preliminary copy of a book she is writing and I am entering
the information into my database and onto the web page.

If you think you might be a part of this line...even please
let me know and I will invite you onto myfamily.com site.
I will keep a lookout here in case I catch anything that looks
familiar.

Good luck all.

Edgar Moses (b.1918) & bro. Daniel C. (b.1917), ch. of Edgar/Lulu, lived Marion Co., IA

I have an original postcard photograph of “Edgar and Daniel Moses – (taken) Dec. 13, 1917”, and it states that Daniel is ”1 yr. 4 mo., 2 weeks” old, while Edgar looks to me to be about two months old. I’d like to get this great old photo back to descendants or family members.

I found the Daniel C. and Edgar W. Moses as children in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Melcher (Marion Co.) IA, the sons of Edgar and Lulu Moses.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Edgar W. and Daniel C.
My grandmother was Rachel Leah Moses. Her father was Dave or David Lafiette Moses. All I have on David is that he was born in 1812, in Tennessee. Rachel was at one time residing in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, with husband, John Marion Stowe. They moved to Grapevine, Texas, and eventually to Austin. I would like to trace farther back to determine if immigrants and from where.

When she was married to my Grandfather she was Grace Wiley, she's listed in the 1930 census.

I have an obituary that names her subsequent children with Clarence Moses and her other brothers and sisters. A family friend sent us the obituary when she died. My mom and her birth mother were not in contact with each other.
The deceased was 35 years of age, and a carpenter, having worked at his trade near the place where he came to his death, during a year past. On the day previous to his death, Mr. FORMAN had brought to his house a cask of brandy, and the deceased, who was a man of intemperate habits, during the night made a hole in the cask and, it is supposed, drank to that excess which caused his death. Coroner BOURS proceeded to the place to hold an inquest, the result of which we have not heard.

I'm researching the Moses family that appears on the 1871 English Census in London. Head of household is Aaron Moses and wife Teresa Moses nee Raphael. There are eight children in this family and I'm specifically interested in Abraham Moses who I believe married my great-aunt Edna Robinson also of London. This couple moved to the US where Moses changed his name to Fred Harvey and worked for the Prudential Life Insurance Co. The Moses family
originated in Germany and arrived in London about 1868. Upon retiring from Prudential they returned to England.

Can anyone make a connection to this family?

Rich Ward
Richward8166@aol.com

CLARA MOSES orphan in Alton, IL

I am searching for my great grandmother who was born in around 1887-1889. I don't know where she was born or who her parents were - only that she lived in an orphanage in Alton, IL. She married Thomas F. Corbin in 1906 in Carrolton, IL. They met in a boarding house where she worked at a servant and he was a boarder (per 1900 census) After marriage they moved to Kentucky and this is where she died, about 1927.
Her daughters were Velma, Lilly, Ethel, Evelyn and Mae and one son Samuel. I think she had another child who died young: Jessie Ilma I believe. No one in the family knows anything about her parents or ethnicity, but they thought she may be Jewish. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Lisa
