Suzanne Nolan (or anyone with info), It sounds like you may know a lot about my lineage of Nowlands. My GGGGGrandfather was William Nowland, born in Ireland about 1760. His son, Andrew was born in Benton, Yates, NY. Andrew moved to the territory now called Ann Arbor, Mi in 1824. Andrew was married to Mary Polly Rumsey. They had 10 children. I think that William may have also had 2 more sons in addition to Andrew. My question: Does anyone know if John and William Jr., both born between 1781-1810, are also sons of my GGGGGrandfather William?
Amy

Is there anyone with connections to the Nowland's in Michigan?

State of Missouri, County of Carroll:

In the matter of Pension Claim of Ferdinand Noland, Private, Co. C, 65th Reg't E MM Vols., personally came before me a Notary Public, J.R. WINFREY, late Private Co C, 65th Reg't EMM Vol, who...hereby declares that on or about the __ day of October 1864, at or near Carrolton, Missouri, the above named soldier was disabled while in the line of duty by contracting a very severe cold, caused from continual exposure to bad and incliment weather whilst in the line of duty as a member of the company and regiment above mentioned. Said cold settled upon his lungs, which gave him a severe cough, bad catarhh of the head and throat and bronchitis. Claimant was never after able to do any further duty in the company whilst we were in the service. I have lived a neighbor to claimant continously to this date and have personal knowledge that he has continued to suffer with the above mentioned disabilities during the entire time from October 1864 to this date. He further declares that his post office address is Wakenda, County of Carroll, State of Missouri... and that his knowledge is derived from being a comrade in the same company with him at the time and a neighbor ever since.
J.R. (his mark X) Winfrey
Witnesses:
C.E. Rogers
W.H. Turner

C.E. Rogers, Notary Public (Dated Feb 4, 1889)

NOTE:
T.N. Clements signed essentially the same affidavit, verbatim
on the same day, with the same witnesses, same notary.

Nowland Family in Ireland

I just got back from Ireland last week where i came across two Nowland families. Both families had changed their name to Nolan.

The 1st family is my own where I found that my great grandfather, George (b. 1846, d. 1886), changed his name to Nolan when he came to the US with his wife Mary Curran Nolan (b. 1850, d. 1927) in 1872. George Nolan was born to John Nowland and Mary Cuddihy Nowland (b 1811, d. 1909). John and Mary Nowland were married in the mid-1830s. My family lived at Mount Loftus in Thomastown, Kilkenny, Ireland from at least the 1840s to the 1920s. Two of my great uncles, Charles Nowland and James Nowlan, lived in nearby Pollagh and died of TB in 1866 and 1867. They apparently attended the Catholic church in Graiguenamanagh. It is my understanding that this church is no longer a Catholic Church.

While visiting Mount Loftus, I was directed to a James Nolan who lived about 1/2 mile from the Mount Loftus Manor and he graciously shared with me the genealogy reports he had which went back to the 1600s. The 1600s and 1700s were all on Nowland. His documentation was exquisite
but he had not organized it yet. He even had a legal document where a Nowland agreed to be an indentured servant for seven years. He had another document listing the names of people boarding the S. S. Dunbrodie to go to America.

Just sharing.

Joe Barrett
abou505@aol.com

E W Noland b 1850 in Ark > TN, son Edward Jr b Mar 1870 Ark > TN, dau Lucile b Mar 1885 in TN

Hi this is a dupe of the one I put on the Noland board:

I'm searching for any information on the Nolands. My great grandmother is Lucille Noland (Nowland) Semnacher. I finally found her in a 1900 US Census in Memphis, Shelby Co TN. Her faterh is a steamboat manager and her brother Edward Jr is a steamboat captain. Father is listed as E W Noland while the son is Edward Jr and his son is Edward 3rd. E W's wife just has initails M ? b Dec 1848 in Ala.

Was also wondering if what family ties if any there were to the Eugene Nowland Concert Co, Lucille (as Mrs. Lucille Nowland Semnacher) was a member of this company for two years. Unfortunately the playbill that is stored at the University of Iowa does not have any dates on it.

There is some talk in the family that Lucille was the original Ann Page of the A&P grocery stores. I'm assuming that she was "the model"?

Appreciate any information anyone may have. Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Cindy

Nowlands Ireland to Maryland

I am doing a family tree for the Nowlands in my Family. I have traced the Nowlands back to a Michael Nowland (1755-1817) in PA.

I am told by a member of our family, that our Nowland lineage goes to a Henry (Abt 1652-1706) & Lettice Nowland that came to the United Sates in 1679 and entered in the State of Maryland.

I can not find the connection of this Henry Nowland (1679) to the Michael Nowland (b: 1755) of PA.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please Email me as listed in the profile.
1800, 1830 DC Census - NO(W)LAND

I am collecting some D.C. NO(W)LAN(D) data as I can find it. One of my maternal 3g-grandmothers is Mary Noland (spelled Nowland in a D.C. marriage record). Per Mary's great-granddaughter, Mary Virginia DRURY ("Virgie"), Mary Noland's birth year is 1794. Virgie entered that year on a DAR application she completed in 1909. Per the 1850 DC census, Mary Noland was age 52 (so b. abt. 1798 - but it was common, really a norm. for folks to 'shave' a few years off their age in the census). It also shows she was b. in England.

Mary Noland m. Samuel DRURY Jr. 05 July 1815 in Washington, D.C. I list 9 children for them. I recently found an 1800 DC census item for a Terence NOLAND household and it could be her father (Samuel and Mary named a son Terence and it isn't a DRURY family name). A good lead but not definite!

1800 Federal Census - Washington, D.C.
Georgetown

6th line - Head of Household: Terence Noland.

Free White Males:
1 under 10
1 at least 26 & under 45

Free White Females:
1 under 10
1 at least 26 & under 45
==========
Here are the 1830 census items for NO(W)LAND in DC:

1830 Federal Census - Washington, D.C.
Georgetown, page 140.

19th line - Head of Household: Patk Noland

Free White Males:
1 at least 20 & under 30
---
1830 Federal Census - Washington, D.C.
Georgetown, page 146.

25th line - Head of Household: Pat'k. Noland

Free White Males:
1 at least 20 & under 30
---
1830 Federal Census - Washington, D.C.
Ward 1, page 53.

21st line - Head of Household: James Nowland.

Free White Males:
1 at least 20 & under 30
---
1830 Federal Census - Washington, D.C.
Ward 2, page 75.

2nd line - Head of Household: Philip Noland.

Free White Males:
1 at least 15 & under 20
1 at least 20 & under 30

Free White Females:
1 at least 20 & under 30

Total person in household: 3
===end census items.

Nowland/Knowland/Knowlin/Nouland from Vermont to Jefferson County, Missouri

I have tracked my Nowlands in Carroll County, Missouri to Jefferson County, Missouri and then to Vermont but can find little information about them in Jefferson County MO or Vermont. Looking for someone who has any further information or is related in any way.

The information I have is:

3G Grandparents: John W. Nowland, born 22 Mar 1813 in Missouri and died 26 Mar 1898 in Carroll County MO. Married 31 Oct 1839 in Carroll County MO to Minerva Hardwick, born 3 Jan 1822 in Ray County MO, had five children, and died before 20 Feb 1849 when he married Elizabeth Frances Curtis. He stated on the 1880 MO Census that his father was born in Vermont. In 1837 the Land Record on the sale of one of his inheritances of land in Jefferson County says John Nowland of Monroe County IL (which is the County across the Mississippi from Jefferson County MO).

4G Grandparents: The land John W. Nowland (3G Grandfather) owned in Carroll County in the 1840s-1850s was his 1/5th part of land owned by his father John Nowland of Jefferson County MO.

According to the Probate Records found in Jefferson County MO John and wife Patsy died in 1822, she in about August and he in late December, after being ill for some time. All five children were minors at the time and there are extensive Probate Records about their Guardianships.

I don't think this John ever lived on the land in Carroll County as he bought it from a man in Jefferson County in 1819 and owned other land in Jefferson County; the deed had not ever been filed in Carroll County until the children were selling the land they inherited. Three children sold their 1/5th part of all land in Carroll and Jefferson Counties and then went on to Wisconsin. The fifth child was Samuel who died young (before 1838). The Probate Records in Jefferson County include household inventories and doctor bills so both John and his wife died in Jefferson County MO although I do not know where they are buried.

The children who went to Wisconsin were: Charlotte who married Crawford Million. Lucinda who married Amos Harris and then later Crawford Million. Washington Nowland/Nowlan/Nolan who married Missouri Wilcox. I have had contact with a couple of descendants of Charlotte's and Lucinda's but invite others.

Found the following information on Census Records which would fit a John Nowland/Nouland/Knowland/Knowlin born in Vermont. It would be this John Nowland and his Parents (and siblings) extending the John Nowland lineage to my 5G Grandparents.

1820 VT Franklin County, Highgate Twp, Town of Berkshire, Page 197
John Knowland
male over 45 1 (bef 1775)
female over 45 1 (bef 1775)

1 employed in agriculture

1810 VT Bennington County, Arlington Page 77
John Knowlin
male of 45 & up 1 (bef 1765)
male of 10-16 1 (1795-1800)
male under 10 1 (1800-1810)

female of 26-45 1 (1765-1786)
female under 10 3 (1800-1810)

1800 VT Bennington County, Town of Arlington
John Nouland
male under 10 1 (1790-1800)
male over 45 1 (bef 1755)

female 16-26 1 (1774-1784)

Would also like to know the maiden name of John Nowland's (born 1795-1800 in Vermont and died 1822 in Missouri) wife Patsy. Hope someone recognizes something! Thanks!

I am still researching information on my grandfather..John Henry Nowland. First posted message in 1999 and stated he was born in Alabama. Have acquired his death certificate and it indicates he was born in Stewart County, Georgia. He died in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama on Jan. 25, 1940. (Born: Oct. 17, 1872). Parents were Jim Nowland and Harriett Matilda Nowland. A "Mrs. Ralph Richards" gave the information on the death certificate. Does anyone have any information that I may add to this. He was married to Cathon Matilda Ogletree Byous on June 23, 1923 in Griffin, Ga.
