MARY SIMMONS
Mary Lucille Phillips SIMMONS, 91, a long time resident of Hesperia, passed away quietly in a care facility, Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.
She was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Harrison County, Iowa, daughter of James Gerome “Buck” and Margaret Emily “Emma” Rutherford Phillips. Mary was raised in Illinois where she worked as a cashier for Piggly Wiggly Market. She married the love of her life, Melvin G. “Jack” SIMMONS, June 26, 1937. He passed away Oct. 9, 1989. She lived 55 years in California, 35 of them in Hesperia. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2924 of Hesperia for 26 years. Her primary passion was volunteering at the V.A. Hospital in Loma Linda for 23 years, and she was a life member of the Leisure League of Hesperia. Her interests include working jigsaw puzzles, reading novels and the Daily Press. Being an avid baseball fan she supported the LAA. Dodgers and High Desert Mavericks for years. Even in her 80s, she would go to Mavericks' home and away games.
Her survivors include four sons and their wives, James (Karen) SIMMONS, Arthur (Henrietta) SIMMONS, Richard SIMMONS, Howard (Dee) Simmons; a daughter, Mary Jane Fletcher; many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, LeRoy “Tommy” Phillips; two halfbrothers, Clarence “Lee” Parks and William “Buddy” Pochelle; two sisters, Audrey Morgan and Lorena Ford; and a granddaughter, Tracy Jones.
Memorial services and VFW recognition ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., in Riverside, Staging Area 5. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Voluntary Services at Jerry L. Pettis VA Medical Center, 11201 Benton Street, Loma Linda, CA, 92357.
