I am researching my GGrandparents. I have a lttle to go on in my Zuelke-Stockton Tree. I am also working on Zuelke family tree. Jesse and Rosanna's daughter Alma married Harry Bert Zuelke in 1919. Perhaps we can connect to dots to paint an interesting picture of my out tree. Actually, OUr forest.Rosanna's mother was Hannah Viola Woods. I hope we can discover new branches. Alice

Connecting Phillips Families in Baltimore prior to 1840's

Does anyone know of any resources in identifying the members of the various Myers and Phillips families in Baltimore, Maryland, from the mid 1700's through the early 1800's? I have hit a roadblock at this point:

Husband: Charles W. Myers, b. 1839 Baltimore
Wife: Sarah Jane Phillips, b. 1848 Baltimore

I know from later census records that their parents were also born in Baltimore, and there are a tantilizing number of earlier Myers and Phillips to be found in earlier records from Baltimore. However, I have not yet been able to connect my GGGrandparents to their families. Can anyone provide any information?

Thanks,

Bill Manzke
bmanzke@columbus.rr.com
David Phillips b. 1755 NC married Mary Sophia Hoffman b. 1764 PA

I am trying to verify the parents and siblings of David Phillips who was born 24 Dec 1755 in Caswell, North Carolina. He fought in the American Revolution. He was married to Mary Sophia Hoffman born 11 jun 1764 in Lancater PA. I have recent information (which appears to be pretty creditable) suggesting that David's parents were Philip Phillips born 9 May 1714 in North Molton, Devon, England and Elizabeth Bendall b. 27 Feb 1732/33 in Northam, Devon, England. On David's pension he list his mother as Elizabeth Tomlin. Elizabeth Bendall is recorded as the widow of Phillip Phillips and as marrying for the second time to a John Tamlyn.
Does anyone know if Phillip and Elizabeth are indeed the parents of David Phillips and possibly a brother Richard? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Descendants of Gabriel Phillips, d 1809 Newberry CO SC

In 1758 Gabriel married Hannah Brower at Tohickon Union Church, Bucks CO, PA (near Bedminister). This is the first known of Gabriel. He died (documented) 1809 in SC.

Many internet postings have Gabriel's wife as Joannah Cook but this in error and undocumented. Also they have him being born in Ireland and a weaver but the claimed documentation does not exist.

I am in hopes that a Gabriel descendant will have a Bible or other document that gives further info--especially his father and siblings.

Gabriel is an exact DNA match to a John Phillips who died in 1801 in NC. Probably this John and Gabriel were brothers.

Another reference shows "Joseph Davis" married Sarah Phillips on Aug 25, 1779 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. I've been asked for proof that Joseph Davis is the same person as Mr. Davis?

Looking for other family connections for James Phillips, born VA, now WV, before 1797. He lived in OH, probably Morgan County and definitely Pike County, between 1815 - 1824; unknown spouse; 3 known sons: James, born 1815, married Jane McCurdy; Samuel, born 1818, married Susannah Keever; and Joseph, born 1824, married Emily Briggs. The 3 sons also lived in Tippecanoe and Fountain Counties, IN and settled in Muscatine and Louisa Counties, Iowa.

Through a Y-DNA test, we've connected to the family of Asahel Phillips, or Philips, of Harrison County, VA. Asa was born in 1777 and married to Hannah Nixon in 1805. They also lived in Hardin County, KY and then settled in Schuyler County, IL.

I believe Asahel had brothers, possibly a George, Samuel, Benjamin.

Some of the family used the spelling Philips.

Shotten, Wales: Gabriel Phillips dc 1674; son or brother Jonathan

Do you know anything about this line? I have a document (in English and Latin) written in 1674 probably at Shotten. The handwriting is pretty clear but is nevertheless difficult to read. I think it is an inventory of debts and assets of Gabriel. Jonathan Phillips is a witness so I think he might have been a brother or son. I speculate that Jonathan would have been at least 21 and therefore born about 1624.

Phillips Family in New Castle Co., DE

I am a descendant of Thomas Phillips b. 1811 d. 1881 in New Castle Co. Delaware. He married Hannah Pierce, daughter of Elias and Jane Pierce. He had one brother that I know of, Lewis. Lewis was born 1818 and died after 1880 and married Margaret Forwood. I know he (Lewis) had 4 children, Ellenor Jane b. 1852, Lewis b. 1855, George b. 1857, and Emma b. 1858. Does anyone know anything about this line. This is as far back as I know and any help or suggestions that you have would be appreciated. I know there was a Quaker Phillips family in this county, but I have nothing to show for sure that they were Quakers. Thank you.

Luke Garrett

Phillips family before US

Gabrell Phillipes - transcription of 17th century legal document needed

I have a hand-written document hand-written by an authorized scribe. The lettering is clear but the document is filled with terms and words that I can't figure. Some of it is in Latin.

The date is 1674 and it is similar to a will, apparently a kind of inventory of the estate of the late Gabrell Phillipes of Shotton Lake in Wales.

If you want to take a shot at transcribing the document--or if you know someone with experience in transcribing--please contact me and I will email the document.

Pinkney Taylor Phillips and Nancy J Easterwood

I am looking for any infomation on Nancy Easterwood, daughter of Joseph W and Myra Ann Kirby Easterwood who married Pinkney Taylor Phillips and their children. I know that she and Taylor are in buried in Ten Island Cemetery in Calhoun County, Alabama. Their children are William, Martha, James and Walter, they may have had more. Nancy "Nannie" died in 1894, in 1900 Taylor was married to Dee and in 1930 Taylor was married to Lettie M. After my great grandmother Susan Brown Easterwood died in 1885 my grandfather went to live with the Phillips for a while before moving to Telephone, Fannin, Texas, but I didn't know any of the names involved and had thought the Phillips were on the Brown side until now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Debbie Cody ftccok@hotmail.com

My husband's family were Phillips from Overton and Jackson Cos. in TN.

We are at a 'brick wall' with his great-grandfather, James Pierce Phillips born 12 Aug 1811 VA or NC; died 11 Jun 1878 Jackson Co., TN.

James Pierce Phillips first appears in the 1850 US Census in Overton Co. with a family. I have a copy of his land grant for property in Overton Co.

I cannot find any parents and/or siblings of James Pierce Phillips. He is listed as coming from North Carolina in the 1860 Jackson Cty. Census. He was a farmer. His son, John Townsend Phillips' death certificate states James Pierce Phillips was born in VA.

James Pierce was listed in the 1870 TN census as being 60 years old and living in Jackson Cty.

Who were his partents/siblings?

Carole Lannom - OH

Searching for information on the family of David Phillips, born abt. 1755 in Orange Co. N.C. His father is believed to have been David too and may have been from Virginia or Pennsylvania. His wife, Mary Sophia Hoffman, was evidently from Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania. Together they had about 13 children and at least 3 were born in Orange Co. The family then moved to Danville, Mercer Co. KY about 1798 - 1800 and then on to Belleville, St. Clair Co. Illinois about 1803.

Gabriel Phillips (died 1809 in SC): seeking descendants with old family Bibles

Many researchers have this Gabriel married to someone else (usually a Johannah Cook) but he is documented marrying only Hannah Brower, 1758 in Bucks County, PA. Gabriel's father is missing; my hope is that one of his descendants might have a source such as a Bible that would name his father.

Indeed, there are many postings that give Gabriel a father (usually John) but the documentation is not good enough when questioned.

Gabriel was illiterate but it could be that his wife was educated. Thus a Bible could have been kept with
the info we seek. I have read that one of their grandsons (Pressley Phillips) was a minister and he would have been likely to keep a record of family history.

Descendants of Gabriel are: Susannah, Peter, Edward, Gabriel, Hannah and John.

Obituary was in the Toronto Star newspaper and mentions that she had 2 daughters, Heather and Cheryl.

Alice was also interred at Pine Hills Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

She is my Grand Aunt, and I would love to learn more about this branch of my family. (re: PHILLIPS) I have information pertaining to the MAY family already.

Many thanks in advance,
Lisa

Looking to compare notes regarding possible mutual relatives. My great grandfather's name was Alexander Phillips (b. 1850); per his 1879 marriage certificate he was born, worked and married in Brooklyn. Subsequent records show that his family lived in Newburgh, Orange Co., NY (1880) and Wappingers, Dutchess Co., NY (1900). His sons, Frank L. and Lewis L., lived in Poughkeepsie in 1910 and Brooklyn in 1920. Both men report that their parents are born in CT, but I've found no concrete evidence of this. Any information would be welcome. Please respond to kpowersv(at)yahoo.com with Phillips in the subject line.

Thanks,
KPV

Gabriel Phillips (d 1809 SC): Seeking his father

Because Gabriel did not sign his Last Will he probably was illiterate and therefore we may assume the same of his father.

We assume that Gabriel was Quaker since there is no census record of his slave ownership and Bucks County was home to many anti-slave Quakers, especially Welsh Quakers.

Gabriel’s father may have been a Welsh-persuasion Quaker.
In 1758 Gabriel (Philipps) married Hannah Brower and Brower may be a German name. Their marriage was in a Lutheran oriented church (Tohickon) but it was a "union" church—several protestant denominations used a union church. Their first child Susanna, b 1759, was baptized in the church in 1760. It is probable that Hannah and the Browers were German and Lutheran because Quakers did not baptize infants. If we could find Browers in Bucks County we might find a clue to the life and times of Gabriel and his parentage.

Gabriel may have been a Baptist. There is a record of one of his sons (Gabriel Jr) having become a Baptist minister in South Carolina. Usually ministers were literate so it may be that Hannah and her family were somewhat educated and that she was instrumental in her son Gabriel’s religious career.

Gabriel probably lived in Bucks County before getting married in 1758. He probably lived there when his daughter was baptized in 1760. Undocumented as far as I know: Gabriel's son Peter was supposedly recorded as a birth or baptism at Tohickon Union Church in 1763.

Tohickon is located near Bedminister township, Bucks County.

Summary:

Because Gabriel is an unusual first name it should be easier to find his father. (DNA match connects Gabriel to a John Phillips, possibly a brother. But John is so common that we are lucky to have a Gabriel to concentrate on.)

IF Hannah was Gabriel’s first marriage he may have been about 25 years old in 1758, therefore born somewhere around 1733—but where?

If Gabriel was a Quaker and married an outsider he would have been formally disowned by the Quaker church and probably by his father, thus possibly erased from family bibles, etc.

Are the Browers hard to find because the name was Brauer or other German name?

Gabriel may have been Welsh: most of his 12marker matches are to surnames identified with Wales. In 1733 Welsh imigrants were still using the old naming system; he may have been born Gabriel ap Philip.

Gabriel’s "older brother" John is first documented in Virginia (1790 census) and North Carolina (d 1801, Last Will marked with His X). Gabriel is documented in Pennsylvania and—in 1783--South Carolina. Between 1760 and 1783 there is no documentation of Gabriel. If the father was still living in 1783 he might have been in SC with Gabriel.

Gabriel died in Newberry, SC in 1809, documented by probated will. If we could find his grave we might find a father buried nearby.

Many researchers claim, undocumented, that Gabriel was born in Ireland. Because there are many Irish named cities and towns in Pennsylvania it could be that he was born in one of those Pennsylvania locations (not in Ireland).

(See Group 9 for DNA documented kindred http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/p/phillips/pats.html )
