Re: Walter Purdy

Walter Purdy b. 9 Feb 1804, Manchester VT son of Daniel Purdy and Martha Smith, also of VT; Daniel's parents are Benjamin Purdy and Deborah Smith; Benjamin was son of Daniel Purdy and Phebe Horton; Daniel son of Francis II; grandson of Francis I and Mary Elizabeth Brundage.

Walter died 6 Oct 1870 in Palmyra (Hillsdale County) Michigan. His death record states that he was married at the time of his death, and was a Farmer. The cause of death is listed as paralysis. It gives his parents as Daniel and Martha Purdy of Vermont. It is interesting to note that the death records lists his birth place as Michigan.

Vital Records of Hillsdale County, Michigan Record No. 121, Ledger Page 216; record dated 12 Jul 1871

Walter's father was a Rev. Soldier: He received a pension for service in the Continental Army from New York, Pension File No. S9460; his widow, Martha, apparently received the pension upon his death from Vermont, Pension File No. W17504.

Cheers!

Dear Marti:
Thanks for the information as I now have a location in MI to further trace the Walter Purdy family. By any chance do you have any information about the children of the family and do your records provide name of the wife of Walter Purdy? The Walter I'm looking for had a wife named Minerva.

Sorry Ed, the only other thing I can add is that he is listed on the 1860 Census in Hilldale County. You should be able to get more information from the death record or if you can wait a while, from the National Archives of his parents pension records. They are a treasure trove of information. Good Hunting

I don't think there is a connection. Mary Purdy's father, Walter was born about 1804 in VT. He arrived in Wyoming Co NY and married Minerva Hall. Mary was born about 1849, moved with her parents to MI and then ended up in Cook Co IL with her mother by 1888. She married about 1888 William Masters

You're right...the Mary Purdy I was talking about is not one and the same. Thanks for your message. Good luck.

Surnames: Stillman, Purdy, Norton
I am responding because of the combination of the names Stillman and Purdy. Can you tell me anything about the ancestors or residences of Stillman Purdy?

I am tracing Harvey Stillman Norton, who is documented to have had a close [probably brother-in-law?] relationship with Henry/Harry Purdy of Palatine, Cook County IL, about 1860-1865.

Any leads or connections appreciated. Darlene Joyce
