Thank you for responding. In the 80s, while I was living in Buffalo, I spent a fair amount of time in Steuben Co. trying to sort some of this out. What I do know is that Sarah Morris was Betsey Baker's mother, the second wife of Betsey's father, Jonathan Baker. We have never found a connection with Francis. When my Purdy line was in Steuben Co, there was also another Purdy family (including a Daniel Purdy who was not Joseph's father and was descended from Francis),and the historians in each town insisted that there was no relationship between the 2 families. I know enough about families to know that they sometimes argued and pretended they were not related, so that is a possibility. One of Joseph and Betsey's daughters, Zada, does appear to have married into the other family, however. Handy - she did not even have to change her name. As to the other children of Joseph and Betsey, I will have to dig out all of my records. I have info on all of them. William Augustus does not ring a bell, but I will check. I have a lot of info on the family from Joseph and Betsey on and do know that Joseph's father was named Daniel, but I do not know who his mother was. Joseph and Betsey's eldest son was Jonathan Baker Purdy; he married Matilda Ann Fauver (daughter of Samuel Fauver and Rebecca Nichols) and they were my gg grandparents.

When I visited there, all of the graves were still intact and readable. Betsey is the name on the gravestone and I have not found her called her Elizabeth anywhere, but I realize that does not necessarily mean a thing.

I will be glad to share whatever info I have documented. I believe some of it may be in old posts on this site. Thank you again.

I've looked at this more carefully and the date I have for Elizabeth Baker's birth must be incorrect... it's probably 1786 not 1736! This material is from scanned typewritten documents which can easily recognize an 8 as a 3. That would fit your info that the family was in Steuben Co by 1790 and it wouldn't push the date of Joseph's father Daniel back to the early 1700's which would make him almost impossible to place. It also allows a reasonable second marriage for Joseph if that info is correct.

I suspect that your Purdys are descended from Francis Purdy of Fairfield CT (ancestry unknown but likely from Suffolk) for the following reasons:
1. although there are lots of stray Purdys in NY state at the end of the Revolution, we haven't been able to tie any of them to ancestry other than Francis, or to eachother.
2. there were Francis descendants in early Steuben Co NY. but I don't have a link between them and the names you list. Haven't looked too deep yet though.
3. the name Daniel is a strong hereditary name in the Francis family.

We show your Joseph as a stray, married Elizabeth Baker (10 Nov 1736 - 1820 Canisteo, Steuben Co) daughter of Jonathan Baker. Joseph married second Sarah Morris but I wonder if this is true, as Elizabeth was 84 when she died.
We show a son William Augustus Purdy married Cynthia Jane Symunds and they had a dau Edith Alma Purdy born in Hartland Wisconsin.

The Purdy surname DNA project can be accessed at www.familytreedna.com where you can join the project to get the reduced group rate. We need at least 25 marker Y-chromosome test, as the 12 marker test just isn't detailed enough. We've been able to place a couple of stray lines via the DNA.

The info I have on Daniel Purdy (1831 or 1833 probably both census estimates) and Hannah Thomas (d/o Benjamin Thomas and Hannah ___ of St. Thomas, Elgin Co. Ont):
he was son of Obadiah and second wife Priscilla.
Children: Mary 1857, hannah 1865, James 1866, William 1869, Jeremiah 1871, Ella 1875, Annie 1876, John 1878, Edith 1880. All birth years are likely calculated from census so may be off a bit. Priscilla isn't in this list; was she born after 1880 Michigan census?

The James you mention born 1788 died 1883 Lapeer Co MI was son of Daniel Purdy and Mary Peet, was born probably in upstate NY (Manlius?) and married Matilda Holt born c1792 VT likely Rutland area. Daniel was son of Joseph Purdy who moved from upstate NY (probably from North Creek, Herkimer Co NY) in 1797 to the Cobourg Ontario area, bringing a very large family... he claimed 47 children and grandchildren in Ontario by May 2 1804. I think we've found 41 of them.

My Purdy line is supposed to have come from Ireland, but I have not ever been able to find any confirmation and one of my mother's great uncles thought they might have been from Scotland. Our line was in Purdy Creek, Steuben County, New York, however, by 1790. My My ggg grandfather was named Joseph Purdy (m Betsey Baker) and he had 2 brothers that I know of - William and Daniel. Their father was named Daniel. John was also a common name in the family. I don't know how we would determine whether or not there is any relationship, but it is the first Purdy connection I have heard, so I am interested.

"I am happy to report that the first of many headstone restorations took place this past October. After identifying 2 headstones greatly at risk of imminent damage, the White Plains Historical Society, with the permission of almost 3 dozen descendants of Jonathan Purdy, engaged the services of professional stone sculptor/restorer Robert Neal Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter performed extensive work in stabilizing the red sandstone headstones of Issac Purdy (1732-1816) and Isaac Sniffen (1733-1816). This year's frost would likely have destroyed both of these magnificent grave stones. With your strength and support, the White Plains Historical Society was able to begin this long journey after almost 40 years of resistance from the property owner. Please enjoy the first fruits of your commitment to this project."

I don't have a name for Sylvanus' daughter either. She does not appear on any later census. Sylvanus and Mary Ann (probably Niehart) were not married until circa 1822. Sylvanus was born March 12, 1798 and this would make him too young to be the father of Amanda in Iowa.
I have not found any thing that would indicate to me who Sylvanus' parents were. But I have seen the name spelled Heavilin and Havelin in the census. There were also in Coshocton Co. in 1830 a Lewis Haviland (born in New York in 1807) and a David Haviland (born between 1800and 1810).
John could be his father. Do you know when he was born?

1880 census shows Samuel and Amanda Purdy living in Dallas County, IA.

I believe this is Amanda Haviland Purdy...

Xenia Cemetery; Dallas County, Iowa:

Purdy, Samuel, d. 31 Dec 1891, age: 81y4m23d

This would give her birthday sometime in August 1812 and Samuel's birthday as August 8, 1810. Interesting that they died within 2 days of each other.

It appears from the 1870 census that Amanda's mother Sarah is still living in 1870 at age 94. Yet there is a Sarah "Heveland" buried in Xenia Cemetery, b. 1783, d. 1869. I do believe Amanda's father was Sylvanus Haviland...but no proof. Sylvanus is in Mill Creek Twp, Coshocton Co., OH, where on April 2,1835 he bought property right next to Amos Purdy. A death record for Amanda in Dallas County, IA might show her parentage.

Can you tell me if Amanda was a daughter of Sylvanus Haviland? What was her birth date? According to 1830 census, Sylvanus had a daughter, as yet unidentified, who was born between 1825-1830. Could this be Amanda? Samuel and Stephen Heavilin were brothers who moved to Cadiz, OH bef. 1800. They supposedly had a brother named John, their father was a Stephen Haviland, and they were born in NJ. Does any of this sound familiar?

The copy of the Death Cert I have for Isaac Newton Babcock does not mention his Mother's Name, first or last, Only his Father as being Morgan Babcock.

Isaac Newton Babcock is found in the 1850c in Whitewater Twp, Walworth Co, Wisconsin, nearly 100 miles to the north of where Morgan Babcock and his family are found in Chicago, Cook Co, Illinois....One could theorize that Isaac was throwing a typical tizzy fit when his father re-married....???? At any rate, I have found the PERFECT family connection for the family of Maria Purdy Pardee Babcock and it started with the info found in the 1850c with Isaac N Babcock.....

Looking for info on Mary E. Purdy Carr Morgan.

Mary was daughter of Robert. C and Minerva Purdy of Moundsville, WV. She married a Thomas Carr, then John L Morgan in 1890.

I found her and John.s death dates and John's burial place, her's is still unknown.

I am also trying to find the death date and burial location of her parents.

Her sister Henrietta Purdy married Daniel Mackey of Cameron.

Hi, this probably isn't much help but I have a David Purdy who was born 1800 in vermont who via the purdy DNA testing we know comes from the Vermont Purdy's. In 1840 we believe he was in Kosciusko Co, Indiana along with an Isaac Purdy who is then gone. David dies 1850 in Marshall Co, IN but his family is there (wife Rachel). I have figured that my David had a brother Isaac who fell off the radar between 1840 and 1850. It might be a place to look (Kosciusko Co). Julie Purdy

Looking for info on Isaac Purdy, married to Hannah and father of Mynard Purdy (1842 - 1927). We know that Mynard moved with his mother and step father to Greeensburg, Indiana about 1847 and believe that Hannah remarried to Jacob Shafer. Unsure if Isaac had died or they divorced.

Looking for info on James A. Purdy and family. Born 4/2/1836 and believed to have died before 1880. Married to Catherine Smith (1835-1919) in 10/1857. Children were Albert (1859), Lucinda (1862), Jacob (1864-1883), Laura Bell (1868), Courtney (1874-1927) and Bertie (1876).

Based on 1850 federal census for Decatur Co Indiana James was living with the Shafer family. 1860 census shows him married to Catherine. 1880 census clearly shows Catherine as a widow.

Possible siblings for James are Sarah, Maelesa, Loaler, Isabel, Mynard...but none confirmed.

Parents are unknown but mother may be Hannah H. Shafer.

Any information on any members of this family is greatly appreciated. Willing to share what I know as well. Thank you.

I don't see the connection, except for the name Robert Purdy. Robert C. Purdy and family were in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. censuses in Marshall Co., Va. (now W.Va.), where there were a number of other Purdy families. I have no indication of a connection with Canada. Robert C. was born in Westchester Co., N.Y. He had five children: William, Mary, Henrietta, Martha and Robert (who was born in 1854 and died at the age of 1).

I spent all my summers with realitives in Fontanelle, so I'm familure with a lot of the people (they also were born and raised-and stayed there,) so the connections are great (everyone knows everyone.)

death records should help... I'll work on it... might take some time so be patient, ok? there are other researchers you there that just may have the info you're looking for or - it may be a new branch of the line that came over just about that time.

old census records... his death certificate - all that should shed some light on where he was born.

I checked over my records, your robert purdy in high probablity is the family i'm searching. robert purdy sr/I lived in harrison co, oh- and in 1842,his son Robert was born (Robert jr/II) the family was in Annawan Henry Ill,
in 1850 census the family went back to Chattem Ont. Can. & were in the 1871 census Rrobert sr. age 56 Robert jr. 26. other children sarah 49 charles gilb,(gilbert) 21, george 18 phebe jane 14, Samuel T. 11, Daniel W. 9, Lemuel A. 7 & Mary Francis 2their son James, (my fr grand father remained in Henry, ill & m. Margaret ann Harry,
doesn't these families connect with you Robert Purdy.

Thanks for responding, but your Robert Purdy seems to belong to a different line. As you know, Purdys are numerous. My Robert was born about 1820 in Westchester Co., N.Y. I don't know his death date or place, or his parents' names. He had an extensive Civil War military record, serving in both W.Va. and Maryland units.

i do not have any connection to the Purdy or other connected families. Years ago, I stopped at a flea market in Strattonville, PA Clarion Co where I purchased a copy of the Corsica Crescent, Corsica dated April 1886. Editor was Rev. Frank B. Britt. Because your inquiry is way back years ago you might have already solved the mystery re Rev. Purdy but I'll still send you a brief notation from the bulletin. "Glad to learn that our Baptist brethren have made a call for the pastoral services of Rev.Mr Purdy,of Richardsville, for a part of his time." "We welcome this brother as a co-laborer and trust that his labors will be abundantly successful." Richardsville was located in a rural location in Jefferson County,PA...active for years as location of a sawmill where a small village grew up around...for years has been considered as "almost" a ghost town with few residents..mostly camps.

Hi,
My great grandmother married a William A. Purdy. (i'm pretty surethe"a" was Albert. Her name was Mary. I believe they married in Canada and then moved to Michigan.
My grandmother was Lettitia (LuLa) Isabelle Purdy-married Scott/Vandebrink.
She had a brother named Walter who lived and died in Central lake, Michigan.
i do not have international ancestry so my capabilities are limited. Anyone out there related?

From the Journal of the House of Representatives of the State of Ohio:

"Wednesday, January 6, 1847. Mr. Russell of Harrison presented a petition, signed by Robert C. Purdy and 29 other citizens of Harrision county, asking that the question of retailing intoxicating liquor be submitted to the voters of each election district."

I'm trying to locate any information about Robert C. Purdy's apparently brief stay in Harrison Co. in the late 1840s. Two of his daughters, Henrietta and Martha, were born in Ohio (maybe in Harrison Co.) in 1846 and about 1848. Robert C. Purdy was my great-great-grandfather.

Can anyone provide any clues?

All my Purdy relatives are from Middletown, New York. My GGGrandfather was a blacksmith in Fair Oaks. His name was Frank Purdy and his father was Jarvis Purdy. They go all the way back to Francis Purdy from England.
