My great grandfather was born in Rathkeale, County Limerick, circa 1820.
His family emigrated to the USA just before the Civil War.
The name was originally di Purtell, but was shortened when
they became citizens to Purtell. the "di" became D. and they all adopted the middle name of Donovan, their mothers maiden name.
My gr-grandfathers name was Patrick Donovan Purtell.
