I contacted Jerome sometimes in the spring of this year. He has another edition of the family in North Carolina but he never mailed it to me after I sent him a check. The check was not cashed so I suppose he forgot about it. I was in McComb about 9 months ago and visited the old home. This is the one that was lived in by the Doctor Quin in Holmesville. It is easy to find if you go to Holmesville Cemetery and continue down the road to the square. The couple who own it now had just remodeled it and showed my husband and I through it. They told us a couple of stories about the Quin family but they are not related.to the Quins. Supposedly PBS is to do some sort of program about people moving West during the 1800's and the house was to be on the show. The McComb library has Jerome Hafter's book and some other papers in their genealolgy section if you have time to explore. Good luck and enjoy. Judy

I am also a Peter Quin descendant. My grandfather was Carroll Levi Quin (Peter Quin Jr (1787-1835). The book I have was compiled by Mrs. Madge Quin Fugler in 1922 and revised and edited by Jerome C. Hafter in 1963-64.
Is there a newer version?
I was there in 1977 and the home was run down. My father was there again in 1996 and the home had been remodeled.
I plan on visiting in Dec 2009 and hope I can find the homestead and the Cemetery. I have a picture of myself in front to the Holmesville Cemetery Est. 1823.
Carroll

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for your email. I sent the manuscript to a lady in MS (I'm not sure from your email if this is your cousin or not -- her user id is Rebgirl and is listed in the posting after my initial query) who felt this might be part of her husband's family. Of the people who contacted me, she seemed to have enough of the pertinent facts that made me think it was possibly the same family. You might contact her and see if Emma Eoline Quin is listed in there. It was quite an extensive manuscript, containing the lady who put it together DAR certificate, typed by manual typewriter and the pages were beginning to disintegrate. My thought is that it was assembled prior to 1950. Good luck in your search!
Betty Aronson

Dear Mr. Hafter, I am a Peter Quin descendant. My grandfather was Ernest Quin. I have a copy of the family history that I copied at the McComb Library. My immediate family knew nothing of their relatives and I would be interested in updating the lineage from our side. In March I visited HOlmesville cemetery and stumbled upon the home of a doctor Quin whose home had been recently renovated in Holmesville. My name is Judy Anderson and I am descended through my mother , Addie Quin McGee.

Hi Kelly,
This long document begins with 3 brothers who migrated from Ireland to the Colonies - John, Hugh and Peter. Peter, who is the focus of at least the beginning of the document, was born in 1750. The 3 brothers split up when they arrived - one went west, one went north and one (Peter) went south eventually ending up in Mississippi. I don't know if you're right Quins' but you certainly seem to come closer to this than any of the other responses I have had. The manuscript is very fragile - typed single-spaced on a manual typewriter on very thin and now very OLD paper. Pieces of the paper break off everytime I touch it so I've not gone through the entire thing, therefore I don't know how much of Hugh's family is dealt with here. But I will be very happy to send this to you if you send me your address. I think when you see it, you'll know why I couldn't bear to see it trashed and why I rescued it from the "free" box at this yard sale nearly 3 yrs ago. I've been carting it around ever since, hoping I'd find the right family to send it to, that would be able to use and treasure it. I can only hope that it does contain information that will be meaningful to your family.
Best regards and Deo Vindice,
Betty
Hi Betty,
Thanks for answering. Yes I'm a MS girl, lived here all my life and proud of it :). Ok I have some names from husband's ancestry. Begins in 1723 with Hugh Quin married to Margeret Fondren, parents of Peter Quin Sr. and Daniel Quin, then Peter Quin Sr. married Judith Robinson and they had Daniel, Richard, Nancy, Peter Jr., then Peter Quin Jr. fathered Wallace, Lucius, Lula, George, and Emma possibly some other children with Deliah Bearden. Wallace fathered Ernest who fathered Lucius who fathered my husband, Harold. Good to hear from another REBEL girl, hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you,
Kelly Quin

Hi Rosalie,
I don't know if this may be pertinent to your family or not. According to the manuscript, the 3 brothers who immigrated from Ireland were Peter, John and Hugh. One went north, one out west and Peter Quin came south and settled in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Peter was born in 1750 and died 1824 in MS. If your grandfather immigrated, it may be he came over in the Great Potato Famine in the 1860s. If you can give me more information, I'd verify it against the manuscript and see if it does indeed appear to be your family. I just want to see it go to the right family tree.
Thanks for responding,
Betty Aronson

They then moved to the Newcastle, England area and had a further 6 children.
Bridget died in 1867 in Newcastle
The 1871 census appears to show him as married but there is no wife living with him.
The 1881 census shows him as married to a woman called Alice but I can't find a marriage certificate for them.
I think she might have died in 1863 but I have still to validate this.
If anyone can help with more informnation for me I would be grateful
Fiona

Her father was Henry Quin. Possible initials of J.C.? A cousin of mine mentioned than Henry had brothers and about their family immigrating from Irland. Henry went west, another might have become a firefighter in Chicago or NY and another went south and started a business? Maybe the J in his name is for John?

The manuscript (which is lengthy) begins with "The first mention of the Quin family in America is that three brothers came from ireland sometime prior to the American Revolution. These brothers were named Peter,John and Hugh. One of the brothers went north, one went west and Peter Quin came south and settled in Mecklenburg County, VA." It goes on to state that he was born in Ireland April 11, 1750 and died December 29,1824 in Holmesville, MS. Of his direct descendants, I didn't see a Thomas Quin, which probably wouldn't be relevant since they weren't the emigres. I didn't go through the entire manuscript because the pages are crumbling. Let me know if I can help further.
B)

I found a hand-typed manuscript on the Quin family in America in a "free Box" at a yard sale in Sumner Co., TN. The family giving the sale didn't know how it came to be in their possession, hence the *free* disposal. As a family researcher, I couldn't bear to see it tossed away when someone out there might be looking for just this information! The TN State Archives had no interest in it as there is no noticeable link to anyone in TN. I am hopeful that somewhere, someone will see this and have an interest in this manuscript. The lady who did this research also left her DAR certificate in the book -- Willie Quin East from the Horseshoe Robertson Chapter. Please contact me and give me whatever documentation you possess on this line(s) and I'll see that the manuscript goes to its proper home.

I'm having a good day for the database as I hope this info helps you too.

As long as we can hold my mother's interest will help, she can actually read some of the writing in these letters!

Dear Donna--Your prompt replies gave me just enough clues to pretty well confirm that Ettie (Quin) Brown was, indeed, Esther Quin, 5th child of John H. and Hannah Quin. The clincher was when I found -Anna Quinn, age 64, born in N.J., mother-in-law, staying with Isaac and Esther Brown and children, in Edwardsville, Illinios, in the 1880 census. I know that John H. Quin died in Edwardsville less than a year later. But where was he in 1880? I believe he was visiting Esther's sister, Charlotte Adams, in Colorado. (Again, via the 1880 census info) As to the Osborn name, I have not found any link yet, other than the possibility that Hannah/Anna Quin may have been an Osburn prior to her marriage. Do you have a death date and place for Esther Quin Brown? And her husband, Isaac? In 1880, he was 37 yrs old, and a school teacher. Did they stay in Edwardsville until he passed away? In 1870, the Brown family was in Central TWP, Jefferson CO., MO, where Isaac was again teaching school. I haven't looked at the picture site you mentioned, but do intend to do so. I have a picture of Esther's brother, James Norvall, that I can scan, if you would like. By the way, what did the "L" initial in Esther's name stand for, do you know? Look forward to exchanging further info--

I forgot to add that my grandmother had talked about Ettie's family originally being Osbornes, that just about everyone had carried this name through their middle name but when Ettie was born, her father wanted something different, so she was given a different middle name. She also remembers that she had alienated her family at an early age because they didn't get to pick her husband yet she carried on her family tradition by trying to constantly run Charles's life, when he married the daughter of a Congressman, she nagged for a grandchild, when my grandmother was born, she became a complete monster, trying to control how Beatrice was raised and my grandmother remembers fearing her visits for the ridicule and judgments would make her cry all the time. My grandmother never knew Isaac, he had passed before she was born, but had always been told she was a completely different person before his death.

I know so much about this family, that the few things I don't know just make me anxious to know. I hope the Osborn thing can help. I had found a Hannah Osborne Eyles, which mother's maiden name may be Osborne, but can't tie them into this family....

As far as the decendents of my Ettie Quin, that is documented in our family bible, numerous pictures, letters, verbally by my grandmother, etc. and only had 3 children, one of which was Charles Robert Brown, who married Mary Nelson Matson (daughter of Congressman CC Matson), they had only one child, my grandmother Beatrice, the oldest is Irene Brown who married William McKnight and had one son Robert. Robert was killed in service. The youngest, Edith, married a William Evarts? ( the last name is smudged and I can only do my best on that one, my grandmother was pretty sure it was Evarts, but just called them Eddie & Will. My grandmother knows they had a son named Rolly (Roland), but this isn't documented.

I have a few pictures in ancientfaces.com for the following people: Isaac Hinton Brown, Ester (Quin) Brown, the kids, Irene Charles & Edith, Robert McKnight, Ester w/ my grandmother, Beatrice, and more. I've also posted info by the pictures that I know in hopes that people will see them and tell me some things I don't know.

From the brief info on the marriage of Ettie Quin and Issac Brown in St. Louis, in 1863, I think "Ettie" may be Esther Quin, born 1843 in N.Y., to John and Hannah Quin. The family lived in New Jersey, New York, and by 1860 census, in St. Louis, MO, 10th Ward.
There were 6 children in the Quin family, Wm. E., Geo. W., James N., Esther, Charlotte, and Ellen. James, 2 yrs older than Esther, was married in St. Louis, 22 April, 1864, shortly after enlisting in the Union Navy there.
I find an Esther L. Brown, born June 1843 in New York, Parents born in N.J.., widowed, age 57, living with a son, Charles W. Brown, and a dau., Irene E. McNight, and other McNight and Hentz family members, in Chicago, in the 1900 census, and with McNight's in 1910 census. Do any of these names ring any bells with your family info? If we can establish that James and your Esther/Ettie were of the same family, I have further info and a picture or two on the Quin side

I would value any help in solving a mystery marriage of my GGrandparents.

My late grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Cook/e (both spellings used) born 1883 in Liverpool Lancs England.

On her marriage license in 1916 she gives her father's name as John Cooke (deceased) and his occupation as "Joiner".

Her death certificate gives his occupation as "carter". From the 1891 census I have found a John Cooke occupation carter, with wife Elizabeth and chikldren but none of the children are either Sarah or Elizabeth who would be too young in 1891 to be out at work.

Until receiving Sarah's death certificate, I had her mother as Kate Evans (from a birth certificate), but on the death certificate her mother's maiden name is given as Quinn (no first name).

I have the birth certificates of several Sarah Elizabeth Cook/e births of the right year, 1883, but none so far has a mother with the maiden name of Quinn.

Sarah Elizabeth Cook/e married my grandfather Thomas Ambrose Wildes in 1916 in Liverpool Lancs.

I've found nothing on BMD, nothing on Ancestry, nothing on Genealogy.com and nothing in the Liverpool parish records (when I was there last year).

Any help would be very welcome, as this is driving me bonkers!

Many thanks

Andrea

I am a descendant of Hugh Quin of Chickasaw/Palo Alto, MS. I am very interested in the historical research you and your grandmother have done.
Diane Quinn
