RE: Quinlivans in NY

I'm not sure if this will help in any searches, but I am the Grandson of Frank A. Quinlivan. he was, I believe, from the Whitehall/Granville area of NY. He was also a Ptl. on the Schenectady NY police dept. He was killed in the line of duty on 9/15/1925. He was survived by his wife Myna Quinlivan nee Winchell, and children Frank A Quinlivan 1918-1927 Charles B Quinlivan 1919-2002 Earl J Quinlivan 1920- Bernard Quinlivan ?-1996 Bernice Quinlivan ?- . Charles was my father, and is survived by his three sons, Charles B Quinlivan Jr., Michael E Quinlivan and Donald F Quinlivan. My efforts in searching family ancestry have been mostly negative because most of the background information on my fathers side of family was lost or destroyed in fires and floods.

Leo Name in Quinlivan Family

In doing research on my QUINLIVAN family, I keep coming across the middle name of LEO for many. It follows through the generations, and seems to move to other lines of the family through marriages (REIDY, REID, McNEVIN). I cannot determine a central line for this name leading back to a common father or grandfather.

I suspect that this rather unusual name might be a clue to linking my QUINLIVAN and other's family lines.

I'd like to hear from others who might have LEOs in their QUINLIVAN or related family line.

Website to find 'missing friends' ...lost irish relatives

Found this website: http://infowanted.bc.edu/ , while cruising the internet last night. I haven't seen it posted on Ancestry.com in my travels through the message boards.

From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a “Missing Friends” column with advertisements from people looking for “lost” friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 31,711 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot.

I've seen this information in a genealogy book at the Susquehanna County Library, Montrose, PA. This site makes the data available instantaneously..

Looked up 'Quinlivan' and it came up with these three people.

john Quinlivan	limerick 1853	, Maurice Quinlivan (brother) is looking for him
maurice Quinlivan	limerick	new york city	1849	, John Quinlivan (brother) is looking for him
michael Quinlivan	clare 1859	, Ann Quinlivan (sister) is looking for him.

There are more details besides above for these individuals.

Enjoy

Jim Quinlivan

John Doohan was believed to be a bachelor living in Buffalo and we have lost track of him from 1920's on.

I welcome your inquiries and family information.

I just finished reading about a Quinlivan that changed his name to Quinlan. As if we don't have enough trouble tracking this family, what with all the variations in the spelling!!!!

My question is: does anyone have any commentary on variations in pronunciation of the name?

My husband's parents (spelled Quinlavin) chose to pronounce the name Quin-LAY-vin, a more literal pronunciation for this spelling. The traditional pronunciation is QUIN-luh-vin, which we have chosen to once again use as the proper pronunciation, although we find we have to spell it out more frequently.

Quinlivans, North Abington, PA 1850 census

To all of the Q's

Have dug up some more info on my Quinlivans

1850 Census : North Abington, PA(above Scranton,PA)

John Qumdervin(now that's a spelling I've never seen before)
(Quinlivan) 35 years old (Ireland)
Bridget Quinlivin 35 years old(Ireland)
Mary 5 years(Ireland)
Anna 3 years(PA)
Eliza 5 months(PA)

Also the Quailey family living with them
Michael 28 years (Stone mason) (Ireland)
Hanora 25 years(Ireland)
Julia 7 months(PA)
Bridget(Michael's sister) 16 years (Ireland)

There is also a Sarah I Labor with the Quinlivans which is probably a child from the neighborhood visiting.

Also, I found a John Quinlivan in the 1850 census, age 26 years living in Wysuling,Bradford county, PA.
So within a 30 mile radius of Forest Lake, PA, you had 4 Quinlivan families and non were related to each other.?
Daniel Quinlivan 1841 Silver Lake,PA
Patrick Quinlivan 1843 Silver Lake,PA
John Quinlivan 1850 Wyasuling,PA
My John Quinlivan 1852, Forest Lake, PA

I believe there was also a William Quinlivan who lived in Braford, Mckean county, PA 1850, a couple of counties west from the above 4 Quinlivans. The name William is in our Quinlivan tree : Michael William Quinlivan 1861 and his son William Michael Quinlivan 1888.

You know that there is too many Quinlivans in the same area at generally the same time, so how is it we are not related.

Good health to all of you cousins,
Jim Quinlivan

I have been given a scrapbook of a woman named Betrice Isabelle Quinlivan. She graduated from Cornell University in the early 1920's. It seems that her family was from upstate NY. I would love to find her family and see if they want this scrapbook. If not, maybe I can donate it to Cornell. If anyone recognizes her name or family, can you please email me? Thank you. Mrs. Quinlivan died in March of 1893 and Mr. Quinlivan died in September of 1892. The Flanagans were from Smithville Flats, New York, so most likely these Quinlivans were as well.
