Looking for information on 4 Rafferty brothers who came to US approx 1842-43. Names are James (born 1802), Patrick (born 1815), Thomas (dates unknown), and John (born 1814). James married Mary Dowdle, Patrick married Catherine Reilly (Riley?). John married Julie (Celia?) Bradley. John is my GGGrandfather. All these people eventually migrated to the Kenosha Co., Wisconsin, USA area. It is our belief that the 4 Rafferty brothers came from Westmeath and that their mother may have been Bridget McAvery). Any further information on any of the above mentioned persons would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at judithameyer@yahoo.com. Thanks.

My Ggrandfather Robert Corrigan married Ann Rafferty in 1855 and they had 7 boys and 1 girl.Their names & dob are
John 1856,Mary 1858,Pat (my gf )1863,Joe 1864,Robert 1865.
Peter 1867,Frank 1871 & Mike 1874. I have found descendants of Joe & Mike.Mike's still live in Termonmaquirk
& I have talked to them and keep in touch. This past April my
2nd cousin,Joe's granddaughter who now lives in NY came to spend a day with us and it was great.I had just started looking for my Rafferty's,but had to put them aside because I received some good leads on Joe.I was just about to get in touch with Carol Riker, but I am sure her email address has
changed. You can see from the names above that Ann's father name was Patrick and her mothers name was Mary.Would
love to hear from anybody who has Corrigan-Rafferty ties.
George Corrigan Buffalo NY

RAFFERTY, James & Bridget

Looking for information on my GGrandfather James Rafferty b. Ireland 1842. Married Bridget Malone b. Ireland 1844. According to 1870 Fed. Census, they were living on Charlton St. NYC with their daughter MaryAnn b. NY 1868. I find them again on 1880 Fed Census in Brooklyn on Hamilton Avenue with the addition of another daughter, Teresa b. 1873 NY (my Grandmother) James was listed in the NY Directory thru 1889 but I can't find him or Bridget after that. James was a cooper and I believe he might be related to Raffertys in Ulster County NY(Patrick & Owen), they were also coopers. I would appreciate any and all help or suggestions regarding this search. Thanks, Irene

I'm trying to find any information about Patrick Rafferty born abt 1831* in Co.Tyrone. He was married to Mary (surname unknown) born abt 1843*, they lived in Thornaby, Stockton and had atleast four children .. Mary 1862,Patrick 1866, Thomas 1873 and John also 1873*.
Any help whatsoever, would be very gratefully received as I'm entirely stuck. Many Thanks, Helga
*Patrick and Mary seem to have different birth years listed on each census form I managed to find, they also stated that the children were born in Ireland but I think they were actually born in Thornaby!?

Seek siblings, parents, other ancestors or any info about life in Ireland, England or journey to USA, etc. Have info to share; continued contact not necessary unless you wish.

Michael Frances RAFTER** b c1830 IRE
m Bridget DEE/DEA (?) b c1831 IRE [Bridget possibly b Tipperary per family rumor mill]. Unknown if married in IRE or ENG.
Moved to England & had first 5 of 7 children:

Mary b c1854, Warrington, Lancashire, ENG
Katherine "Kate" b Jul 1860, Orrell, Lancashire, ENG
John b c1861, Orrell, Lancashire, ENG
Margaret "Maggie" b c1862, ENG
Michael b c1866, ENG
Edward b 10 July 1868, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Cornelius b 10 July 1868, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Earliest sighting finds this family as "RAFFTREE" [a big hint on how they were pronouncing their surname or how enumerator was hearing it], 1861 UK census, Orrell, Lancashire, England. 1870 finds whole family in greater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PA), USA area.

Whole family immigrated to USA between birth of son, Michael, in 1866 & July 1868; unknown if all traveled together; unknown port of departure from ENG. or arrival in US. Best guess is they made their way directly to Pittsburgh PA. where had two more children (twins). Michael worked in the coal mines in ENG. & PA. Can account for many descendants from 1870 forward, especially those of Cornelius. This family was Catholic. Have all available census (US and 1861 UK) info; cannot locate immigration or naturalization info.

** believe name changed from RAFTERY/RAFERTY/RAFFERTY but cannot document when/where

Thanks for looking.

Raffertys in Philadelphia, PA

I'm looking for info about my paternal ancesters. My Father's name was John Francis Rafferty DOB Dec. 11, 1911. He died January 6, 1986. His parents, Peter and Margaret Martin Rafferty died when he was a young child. He had two sisters, Jane and Sally (possibly twins) who died as well. The family was from South Philadelphia I believe. My father lived with various "cousins" in Philadelphia and New York. Names of relatives are McKecknie (spelling?) in NY and Matthews and Murphy in Phila. He enlisted in the US Army at a young age. After his discharge he resided on Large St. in Phila with cousin, Rose Murphy (married name). He worked at Frankford Arsenel and was drafted back in Army when WWII broke out. He married Jean Begley in April 1942. They had two daughters, Jean born in 1944 (that's me) and Catherine Lorraine born in 1947. My parents divorced when we were young. My father later remarried and resided on VanKirk St. in Phila at the time of his death. If any one can help me find any information about my paternal roots, I'd be very grateful.

I am searching for the direct descendants of Frank Rafferty. All I know is that Frank was born on 27 September 1885 in Scotland. He came to this country with his parents in 1887 and settled in the Manhattan part of New York City. He married Anna Trelia on 26 September 1909 in Manhattan. About a year after their marriage they moved upstate to the Albany area. I believe they had one child by the name of Anna in either in 1910 or 1911. In 1930 they were located in the Albany area. After that point I don't know what happened to them.

seeking raffertys / rafterys/ raftreys in us and ireland

Hello
Having successfully found my wife's relatives in the US I (stupidly) volunteered to try to do the same for a friend, Elizabeth Sheehan from Manchester, England.
I didn't realise how hard it is tracing people in Ireland!
Anyway, I hope someone on this message board may know something or give me a few tips.
Here is what Liz knows:
Liz's Father - William Francis Sheehan (Born:08/09/22 in Dublin Died:13/02/73 in Manchester). Served in the Royal Navy, discharged with TB.

Liz's Mother - Margaret Rafferty (or Raftrey...some confusion over which it is.) (Born:18/11/30 or 18/11/27.. in Dublin or Naas Died:06/01/76 in Manchester)

William and Margaret were married around 1954 in the parish of St. Michael's, Inchicore, Dublin

William's Family - William was one of 10 children, we know that one of his brothers was called John. It is thought that William's mother was an English Protestant, called Jane. I'm afraid that's all the information we have on William's side of the family.

Margaret's Family - Margaret had a brother Patrick (Born in the US.) and a sister Theresa ( Born in US or Dublin, Died in Dublin in her early 20's), Margaret was the youngest child. Margaret's father was Christopher John Rafferty/Raftrey a Market Gardener. He was born in Dublin, moved to the US in the 1920s and then back to Ireland where he died. Christopher met and married Miss Mahon (of Long Island) in the US. Miss Mahon died in Dublin during childbirth, maybe whilst giving birth to Margaret.

I did find a Mary RAFFERTY same age and birth in Ireland in Wisconsin with a KELLY family, and on the Census it says she is married.

Does anyone on this post know of this Thomas RAFFERTY Family? I may have some info that his wife Mary was a Mrs Mary Rourke and had a daughter Kate (Katherine) O'Rourke b. 1849 in Nova Scotia and migrated about 1860. I am trying to tie all this together.
I am executor for an elderly lady who died recently. In her records I found information regarding the Connolly family which included info about Bridget Rafferty's children. Since my lady left no known living relatives, I have nobody to pass this info along to and certainly hate to destroy it if it is of interest to someone. I do not subscribe to the Rafferty List so please email me. Carol Alt alttwo@jumpgate.net

At age 5 he and his brother Patrick, age 10, came to the States to join their sister, Sara Raffery McGarrity, in Ilinois. I don't have the parents' names and I don't know where they came in (New York, Canada, etc). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - I am looking for information on my paternal grandparents James Boyle Rafferty who married Annie (Anna...) Goth - both of Baltimore. James Boyle Rafferty's father was reported to be a policeman in York Pa. There is some indication tha he changed the name from O'Rafferty.
James and Annie had children, Emma, William Patrick, James Matthew, Catherine, Richard, Edward, John Bernard, and Lawrence Howard. There were other children who died early.
I would appreciate any and all information about my family, as there are few living members now to help me.
Thanks so very much,
Lawrence Howard Rafferty, Jr

C(K)ATHERINE Rafferty & Patrick QUINN, Tyrone, married 1829

C(K)atherine Rafferty (born about 1801) was the second wife of Patrick Quinn (born about 1787). They lived in the town of Omagh, County TYRONE, Ireland.

They raised seven children:
Mary (b. 1824)

Rosana (b. 1826)

Ane (b. 1828) married John Keyes. (Four kids: Katherine, John, Alice & Nellie/Eleanor Keyes.) Settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Michael (b. 1830)

Catherine (b. 1832)

Seragh (Sarah) (b. 1834)

James Quinn (about 1839-1922) married Winifred Nolan, settled in Canaan, Connecticut. (Six children: Mary Ellen, Katherine, Jospeh, James, & Mabel Quinn.)

Family history has: C(K)atherine Rafferty of Castle Roddie, buried in Drumragh Cemetery - Omagh, Ireland.

When James Quinn's 2 daughters visited Ireland in 1936, they visited C(K)atherine Rafferty's (their paternal grandmother's) tombstone. While in the cemetery an old man came by. They asked him if he knew C(K)atherine Rafferty, his eyes lit up and he answered, "Aye, she was sunny!"

James Quinn is my great grandfather.

RAFFERTY Family of Toronto

I am looking for help with the family of Elizabeth Mellissa RAFFERTY, born in Toronto 27 Dec 1887. She married Clarence OSBORN (of Ohio) in 1914 in Sault Ste. Marie (which side of the border?). They lived in Rogers City, MI for the remainder of their lives.

I know that Eliza. ("Betty") had a brother Fred (of Detroit during the early 1940's) and sister Maude. She likely also had a brother Eddie (ensign, U.S. Navy 1944). I hope to find the names of her parents and any other siblings. I do not know when she left Canada, or whether it was the entire family or just certain members who came to the U.S.

Rafferty/Hanrahan/Doyle of New York

This is my last resort. A John Rafferty/Raferty bought a plot in the 1870's in Calvary cemetery, Woodside, NY. In 1881 one of my ancestors, Maggie (Doyle) Hanrahan was buried there. She was the wife of Thomas Hanrahan, born 1844 in Ireland. Maggie was born in Ireland around 1851. Thomas and Maggie's daughter Theresa was buried in the same plot in 1880 and Thomas' daughter from another marriage, Margaret, was buried there in 1884.
In 1900 Thomas bought a plot in Calvary and had the three reinterred there.
I have found no connection with either family to Rafferty. Thomas' parents being Thomas Harahan and Mary Murphy. I have no information on Maggie's parents though.
I'm hoping someone might recognize the plot or names. I have been searching for over 10 years for anything about them but have had no luck.

Ireland Rafferty's to NY

Looking for information on my GGrandparents James Rafferty born Ireland 1842 and Bridget Malone born Ireland 1844. I don't know where in Ireland they are from or if they married there or in USA. I found them in 1870 Census and last time 1880 Census in NY with two daughters Mary and Teresa (my Grandmother). James was a Cooper by occupation. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I think there may be a relationship with Rafferty's I found in Kingston NY and Albany NY 1880 Census - all Rafferty's and all Coopers by occupation. Possible trade passed on by Father or Grandfather? Hoping for a connection. Irene
