English origins of RHODES, from the book: Homes of Family Names in Great Britain

Homes of Family Names in Great Britain
By Henry Brougham Guppy
Published by Harrison and Sons, 1890
601 pages

Rhodes is a name principally represented in the West Riding, but it is also established in Lancashire, Notts, and Derbyshire, and it occurs as Rhoades in Lincolnshire. Roads is a numerous Bucks name. There are hamlets and villages called Rhodes in Lancashire and the West Riding. A family named Rodes or De Rodes flourished for 500 or 600 years in Lincolnshire, Notts, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire : they were descended from Gerard de Rodes, a distinguished baron of the 12th century. The Derbyshire branch was a knightly family of Barlborough in the 17th and 18th centuries, rewarded with a baronetcy in 1641 (Pilkington's "Derbyshire")

"Tally-ho!

These three married three sisters; Eve, Julia, and Margaret Hipp, all daughters of Andrew Hipp. Does anyone have a clue whether or not these men are brothers? I'm having a devil of a time with the Rhodes mess. A pile of Rhodes all migrated from Newberry Co., SC to Lauderdale Co., Alabama and then to Panola Co., MS. My direct ancester is Hiram and Eve Hipp Rhodes. This has been a giant thorn for a couple of years now and I can't get unstuck, either with research, letters, or internet yet. This is probably a last ditch plea.
Thanks to anyone responding,
Rick Rhodes, in Texas

Biography of Dr. Edwin D. Rhodes of Georgia and Alabama, 1893

Thanks to Wayne Rhodes of the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, Virginia for bringing us the following data. Check out their website at www.jmlibrary.org.

Hannis Taylor, Memorial Record of Alabama: a concise account of the state’s political, military, professional and industrial progress, together with personal memoirs of many of its people (Madison, WI: Brant & Fuller, 1893), Vol. 2, pp. 978-979.

Dr. E. D. Rhodes, a retired physician of Talladega county, was born July 17, 1832, in Georgia. He is a son of Heflin S. and Elizabeth (Gunn) Rhodes, both of whom were natives of Georgia. The former was a Baptist minister, a farmer and a clerk in the land office where the lands in Georgia were divided. His education was entirely neglected in his youth, and he went to school to learn to write after he was a man of the family. He is a son of Thomas and Prudence Rhodes. Thomas Rhodes was also a Baptist minister, serving in that capacity for many years. He was a soldier in the war of 1812.

Dr. E. D. Rhodes was reared in Georgia, and at the age of eighteen could not write his name. After he became of age, his brother furnished him the means to attend school. In 1858 he began the study of medicine and in 1859 entered the Medical college of Augusta, Ga. In 1860 he began the practice of his profession at Crawford, Ga., and became the physician of Alexander H. Stephens. In 1861 he enlisted in company D, Forty-ninth Georgia infantry, and was elected first lieutenant of the company. He served under Stonewall Jackson in the earlier part of the war. Dr. Rhodes was in the house of Alexander H. Stephens and in conversation with him, on the day that Gen. Joseph E. Johnston was removed from his command at Atlanta. When the news came to him at that time, Mr. Stephens in answer to Dr. Rhodes’ question as the effect of the removal, immediately remarked, “We are whipped.”

The doctor served until the close of the war, and then returned to Crawford, where he remained from May to October, 1865. He then removed to Talladega county, having at that time but $60 in money with which to begin life over again. In connection with his practice he conducted a small farm, raising his first crop with an ox. Little by little he accumulated property until he now owns a large plantation, which is under a high state of cultivation, and upon which he lives in ease and dignity, a fitting condition for one who has behind him a well spent life.

July 10, 1864, he married Lucinda Wynn, daughter of James and Lockey (Barksdale) Wynn, both natives of Georgia. Of the children born to the marriage of Dr. Rhodes and Miss Wynn only one survives, Ira W. The mother was also a native of Georgia. She died May 12, 1872.

On March 15, 1877, Dr. Rhodes married for his second wife, Mattie Allen, daughter of Matthew and Angeline (Drummer) Allen. The former represented Calhoun county, Ala., in the lower house of the legislature for several years. The second Mrs. Rhodes was born in Alabama, was reared and educated here, and died February 28, 1887, having had one child which died at the age of four years. Dr. Rhodes and his last wife were members of the Baptist church. He has served as justice of the peace for two years. In politics he has always been a democrat and is a member of the state alliance.

*  *  *

1850 Census, Warren Co., GA, M-432, Roll 86, p. 150 (Division 90): Dwelling 355, Family 355: Elizabeth Rhodes, 48, real estate $1,000, born Georgia; Radford G.
One of their children is Eliza, B 1851-56 in PA.
I do not have a birth or death date for Abraham or for Sarah. My guess for Abraham would be 1810-1830 and he was born in PA
I know that they are Elizas' parents from a book of marriages that Eliza is listed in.
Elizas first husband was James Ehenger (1813, PA)
and her second husband was William Wolf (1844, PA)

If anyone can help, I would truly appreciate it.

Moses Rhodes/Mary Mead Loudoun Co., Va.

Would like to communicate with representatives of ancestry.com and with whoever has provided data to the ancestry.com address pertaining to Moses Rhodes and Mary Mead of Loudoun Co., Va. mid 1700s. The Quaker Meeting records condemned Mary Mead for having married "out of unity" at time she wed Moses Rhodes. The ancestry.com site indicates that the Moses Rhodes who wed Mary Mead was born in Chester Co., Pa. The Rhodes family of Marple, Pa. were Quakers, but, if Mary Mead's husband was to have come from Marple in Chester Co., Pa., why do the Quakers in Loudoun Co., Va. condemn her for "marrying out of unity" (Her husband, Moses Rhodes, could not have been a Quaker.)? Is this information erroneous? Suspect a greater possibility that the husband of Mary Mead was actually Moses Rhodes of Stafford County, Virgina (son of John Rhodes of said County. See Will of John Rhodes, Stafford County, 1748).

Benjamin Rhodes - c1775 - Yorkshire

Hi, I am trying to find information on Benjamin Rhodes, father to John Rhodes b:1809, Wheldrake, Yorkshire. John and his wife Jane "Montieth" Flint travelled over seas to settle in Australia approx. 1851/52. I purchased their marriage certificate where Benjamin was stated as Johns father. I am trying to find who Benjamin married but am coming up a little empty. The closest I can find is a marriage between a Benjamin Rhodes and a Mary Pratt on the 1st of Oct, 1808 in Wheldrake. However, cannot find any information on Mary Pratt and as I have no other siblings for John have no idea if this is related. Can anybody help?

Jeanne

John Rhodes Born S.C. 1797

I am related to Hezekiah Rhodes br. 1660 in Va. and his son Hezekiah bn. 1696 in Meddlesex County Va. and later died in Orange County Nc. I have proven this by DNA testing. I am looking for a South Carolina connection to Hezekiah Rhodes. There are several others in our DNA group that have a S. Carolina connection but none of them have a John Rhodes born in 1797.

Cousin Rhodes (Va.) who is also in the same DNA group with me. We match 25 of 26 dna markers he is from Hezekiah bn. 1696. He has all of Hezekiah desendents in Va, but dose not know which family group moved to S. Carolina.

Information taken from Roots Web family tree of Larry C. Jamison, I found sons of Hezekiah (1696) and Elizabeth Nichols that had moved south to N. Carolina and then there children moved on to So.Carolina and Wilkes Ga.

Children of Hezekiah Rhodes and Elizabeth Nichols

a. Children of William Rhodes,born 1698,married Hannah Miller. Orange Va.1722

Sons of Williiam Rhodes
a. Christopher Rhodes ,born 25 Nov.1730 in Orange Va.,died 10 Jan. 1813 Enoree,Spartanburg,Sc
b. William Rhodes Jr..born 3 Dec. 1724. Va.,d: 1776 Edgefield South Carolina

Also another tree on Roots Web posted by Tim Laughlin 08-11-2007 William Rhodes Jr(above)
family tree shows the following:

Children of William Rhodes Jr.
a. Absalom Rhodes., born 1770, married second wife Mary Barton 1796.
Son of Mary Barton and Absalom Rhodes
a. John Absalom Rhodes born Mar.1797.

I am trying to find a Male from the above Rhodes lines who
would like to join our DNA group and take the DNA test.

Thank you

Phillip W.
English origins of the surname of Rhodes, Rhoada, Roades, Roads, and Road

DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH AND WELSH SURNAMES WITH SPECIAL AMERICAN INSTANCES
BY BARDSLEY, CHARLES WAREING, M.A., 1901.

Page 644

Rhodes, Rhoada.-(1) Local, 'of Rhodes.' Many of the Manchester Rhodes hail from Rhodes, two estates, one between Prestwich and Ringley, and the other near Middleton. Probably both local terms are equivalent to royds and imply an early ridding. (2) Local, "at the roads,' i.e. cross-roads. Here the h is intrusive. This was a common Yorkshire entry, and explains the large number of
Rhodes in the West Riding Dir. For instances, v. Roades. London, 30,2; West Rid. Court Dir.,
84,0; Manchester, 19, 0.

Page 649

Roades, Roads, Road.-(I) Local, 'at the roads,' i.e. the crossroads, the point where the roads meet. Also simply, 'at the road,' one who lived by the road-side. It was natural for people to live at the conjunction of roads, hence the plural form. (a) Local, 'at the
rode' or rodes; v.
Samuel PEW/PUGH 1801 NC and Sophia RHODES 1807 NC to Missouri

I am reposting this post below that was posted in reply to a post I made about PUGH/PEW on census in Missouri on the PEW and PUGH message boards. The way the post backs are now not shown in less you click to see the replies know one will ever see his post! ( see his post below )

I am a descendant of Samuel Pew 1801 NC and Sophia Rhodes Pew 1807 NC

ScottPugh27     Posted: 22 Jul 2008 5:28AM

Classification: Query
Surnames: Pew/Pugh/Wiggins

I believe I am a descendant of Samuel P Pew 1801 NC-?1877, before 1880 MO and Sophia Rhodes 1807 NC-?after 1880 MO.

In 1830 and 1840 Census' they were in Madison County, MO. In 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census' they have moved to Wayne County, MO. However, my Benjamin Franklin Pew/Pugh and Mary Wiggins had left with his family after the 1870 census and in the 1880 Census was living in Lowell, Kearney, NE as a PEWS. Benjamin Joseph Pugh, my Great Grandfather was age 2 in the census, but always claimed he was born in MT and not in MO. I believe he didn't know. Also, they were illiterate. Their name was spelled Pew in the 1830/1840/1850/1870/1910 Census' and they spelled it Pugh in the 1860/1880 for Sophia etc, except Pews for Ben's family/1900 for Charles C and 1910 as well. So Samuel and his children all mostly, in the census, went by Pew, even death certificates. But the next generation no matter where they were, for some reason started spelling it Pugh, no matter where they were, and has been that ever after that i can tell. Probably just becoming more literate.

I have a dead end with Samuel Pew. I have a Samuel Pew in 1820 in PA/OH/TN none of which can be mine, sensably anyway, and the 1814 NC Census he couldn't be old enough i figure, so it must be his dad named Samuel. Does anyone have any information for a Samuel Pew/Pugh, wife to Sophia Rhodes of Lincoln county, NC, daughter of Christian Rhodes and Sophia Shetley i believe.

What you see below is from Roots web and not directly from the census'. I copied it to show that they claim it's Pugh, but the census says Pew, at least up to 1850.

Descendant Register, Generation No. 1
________________________________________
1. Samuel L. PUGH was born 1801 in North Carolina, and died Aft 1880 in Cedar Creek Township,Wayne County,Missouri. He married Sophia Rhodes, daughter of Christian Rhodes and Sophia SHETLEY. She was born 1812 in Lincoln County,North Carolina, and died Aft 1880 in Cedar Creek Township,Wayne County,Missouri.

Children of Samuel L. PUGH and Sophia Rhodes are:
2 i. Clarissa Pugh was born 1826 in Missouri.

3 ii. Henry Pugh was born 1828 in Missouri.

4 iii. David Pugh was born 1829 in Missouri.

5 iv. Rosina Pugh was born 1832 in Missouri.

6 v. Christopher Pugh was born 1835 in Missouri.

7 vi.
William Calvin Rhodes & Allie Jane Williams- Alabama

Does anyone know where William Calvin Rhodes (born c 1821) was buried? He married Allie Jane Williams, dau of John Wesley Williams. The Williams lived in Butler County Alabama, and all or some lived in the Pigeon Creek community. I have heard conflicting things about the Rhodes. One said he died in 1865 in Dale Co., and Allie moved to Texas, dying 1900. Another said Wm died about 10 years later (1874 or 75). Does anyone know of a cemetery? I have looked at all with transcriptions online, and his name isn't listed. Allie Jane was my 3rd gr-gf's sister. And she is the one I have no solid facts for my records. Thanks for any help! I live in Texas and can't look around AL at this time.

Can anyone help me find out some information about my grandfather - he died when my dad was a child and we know very little about him so it is proving to be a bit of problem. All I can tell you is that he died near Nuneaton in August 1957 aged 60. He was married to Beatrice (nee Randall) although we believe she had been married before this and Bert as he was known was a bus driver. He can originally from the north of England and we believe he had been married before, but that he was a widow when he married my grandmother

Obituary of William Rhodes, Urbana, OH

From the newspaper "THE OHIOAN", Urbana, OH, Thursday, August,25 1825: the obituary of William Rhodes.
On morning of the 22d inst. after a lingering illness, William Rhodes, in the 86th year of age; leaving a wife and a large number of relations and friends to lament his loss. Mr. Rhodes was a soldier of the Virginia line on the Continental establishment-through the whole of the Revolutionary War. He was a man, in early life, of uncommon athletic powers; and in the course of his services if my memory serves me. (having received the facts from himself,) he received five severe wounds; by which he was so far disabled, that, for the last 8 or 10 years, he received small pettance from the bounty of his country, which served to smoothe his declining years. His remains were intered in this place on the 23d, with military honors, by Capt. Ambrozene's company of volunteers, in the presence of a large concourse of citizens and strangers. The following next address was spoken by Gen. Vance, at the time of the interment of Mr. Rhode's body.
--Fellow citizens, and brother soldiers-- You have this day been called upon to pay the last tribute of respect to a departed solder of the Revolutionary Army: one who had not merely the honor of having his name enrolled amongst that band of patriots and worthis, but one whose blood crimsoned the snows of Trenton, the fields of Princeton, and the battlements of Stony Point. Venerable man! Why didst thou not pay the debt of nature on the walls of York-Town, where the measure of thy glory was complete, and whence thy name would have have been, by faithful history handed down to posterity, as one of the martyrs whose lives were offered us for the liberties of their country! Yes, there thou wouldst have had the sympathetic tear of your beloved commander, the Father of his country, to have smoothed thy passage to the Eternal World! But why compain? Are not thy service deeplytengraven on the hearts of posterity? And notwithstanding thy mortal remains shall inhabit the cold confines of that vaulted clay, yet thy name shall live in the hearts of thy countrymen, a mausoleum that will be more lasting than monumental brass. Under our present feeling, must we not with the poet exclaim.--

* * *

In death's terrific, icy arms,

Lo! the illustrious soldier lies;

He's free from care and war's alarms,

Nor sees our tears nor hears our sighs.

* * *

old is the heart where valor reign'd;

Mute the tonge that joy inspir'd;

Still the arm that conquest gain'd,

And dim the eye that glory fir'd.

* * *

Too mean for him a world like this.

He's landed on that happy shore

Where all the saints partake of bliss,

And heroes meet to part no more.

http://www.rhodesfamily.org, the website for Rhoades, Rhoads, Rhodes, Rhodus, Roads, de Rodes, Rodes etc. family genealogy.

Liberty Tribune
Liberty, Clay Co., Missouri
June 20, 1879

Emigrant Family Drowned - Deadwood, D.T. June 14

At Buffalo Gap Thursday night, by a sudden rise and overflow of Beaver Creek, caused by a water-spout, eleven persons were drowned whose names are as follows: Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Rhodes, Oliver Rhodes, Frank Reed, Clyde Rhodes, Cliff Rhodes, Maud Rhodes. The latter three were children. All were emigrants on their way to the Hills from Mills county, Iowa and four men who were going from the Hills to the railroad, whose names are unknown, met with a similar fate. Two of them were team owners and one a passenger and night-herder. In about five minutes the whole neighborhood of the creek was flooded, and the waters subsided as rapidly as they rose.

I was researching a Missouri newspaper when I came across this article.
Eellitta

The Family Search Indexing Project

Hi Fellow Listers,

Millions of fellow genealogy buffs search daily for their ancestors. Many of them, like ourselves cannot afford to use the pay sites but still need the help to break down their own brick walls! Free sites are wonderful but limited on resources. Here is one way we all can help ourselves & others at the same time. The Family Search Indexing Project.

You may already be aware that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has started a massive volunteer project to index millions of family history records. The indexed records are free to everyone. Volunteers have already indexed millions of names which are already searchable here:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0

The project is off to a great start--but as you can imagine, the amount still left to do is staggering. And that's where we can help. If you have an internet connection and just 30 minutes a week, you can index names--you can do it any time of the day or night. You don't have to get dressed up--you can index in your pajamas if you want. "Oh ............. look at you!" LOL

Here is the indexing site where you can learn more and sign up if you want to: www.familysearchindexing.com

If you know of anyone else who might be interested, please feel free to pass this information on to them. If you have questions, please feel free to email me directly.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer--

Gene

Origins of the Bruce family of South Carolina

I would appreciate any and all information about this subject. Everything that I have is listed below:

John Bruce, b. March 22, 1756 in Edinburgh, Scotland (possibly Midlothian); d. March 22, 1831 in Orangeburg Co, SC
m. in 1788 in Branchville, Orangeburg, SC:
Catherine "Kitty" Rhodes (Born between 1774 and 1809.
Died between 1802 and 1866. Also known as: Katherine Rhodes; Kattarina Rhodes; Kitty Rhodes; Catherine Rudes; Katherine Rudes; Kattarina Rudes; Kitty
Rudes)
They had two children:
Elijah Bruce b. October 24, 1797
Jane Barbara Bruce b. August 25, 1799

Notes on John Bruce:
The source of this information is LDS Film # 1985631

There is no "official" record for their marriage in Scotland (per the IGI). The above record is part of data extracted from Mormon Temple documents - meaning that the patron who submitted the data is/was a practicing Mormon and undoubtedly related to this individual. Unfortunately, the film notes say that there is no further information available, nor is the submitters name/address available.

So all this tells you is that someone (probably related) believes that their marriage occurred in Orangeburg circa 1788. The use of an approximate date suggests that the submitter was also unable to find a specific record - but may have estimated the date based on other information.

ANY other information would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
R. Bruce, Richmond, VA
