In looking through my grandmother's portraits, I found 2 of their freinds and neighbors, the Ridings. These portraits were taken in Winchester, Virginia. These Ridings lived near Winchester and the portraits were taken around 1890-1900 as far as I can tell. I'd be happy to scan and send to all interested and possibly donate to direct lineage. They're in excellent condition! If anyone is interested, please reply.

I would like to purchase a copy of the book on Ridings to see the whole picture. When/where would it be available? Thank you!
Thomas A. RIDINGS & wife Maggie/Margaret (nee KELLY?), 1910, Blount County, TN

Looking for further information on this Thomas A. RIDINGS and Maggie whom I found in the 1910 Blount County, Tennessee census. I can't tell if Thomas was 83 or 53, however, his wife Maggie is 52. Married 31 years in 1910, mother of 3 children, 2 living in 1910. One child is in their household, a son, that looks like John W. RIDINGS, b. c1889 in TN. Their is an older sister, I believe, named Missouri E. RIDINGS who married Jake H. HUMPHREY and they could be found in 1920 Blount County, TN. Maggie RIDINGS is living with her daughter and son-in-law then.

I believe this Maggie RIDINGS is Margaret KELLY, sister of Philemon KELLY, whom she is living next to in the Blount County, TN census.

So any further information on this Thomas and Maggie RIDINGS, or their children Missouri RIDINGS-HUMPHREY or John RIDINGS would be so appreciated.

Thank you so much!
Karla
Georgia

James and Sarah Ridings:Tennessee and Monroe and Lee County Mississippi

In 1872, Sarah Ridings, wife of James Ridings, filed a “Declaration Of A Widow For Pension” for service in the War of 1812. At the time, she lived in Verona, Lee County Mississippi. Her husband died July 30, 1871 in Cotton Gin Mississippi and he had enlisted in Captain James Tubb’s Regiment at Fayetteville [Tennessee] from September 20, 1814 to April 27, 1815 and was honorably discharged at Mobile Alabama. Sarah also stated she married James Ridings in October 1812 and the marriage were performed by “Esqr” Tubb. She was married under the name Sarah Fair or Rain (her surname is difficult to read). Sarah listed her age as 83 years but census listings indicates she was about 78.

Captain Tubb was a company officer in the 2nd Regiment of the West Tennessee Militia that was comprised from volunteers from Davidson and surrounding counties including Smith County.

Sarah’s pension was denied later in 1872 for want of proof of her marriage but the file was reopened in 1879 with a notation in 1880 and a final but unreadable note dated May 10 ’83. This would seem to indicate that Sarah survived her husband until at least 1879.

Would appreciate any information on James and Sarah but can anyone tell me:
When Sarah died and where she and James are buried?
Any clues as to her maiden name?
Lucy Ridings Est b 1844

I am looking for information on Lucy Ridings who lived in Claiborne County TN around 1860 - 1890. I believe she is the mother of William Andy Brumit (Est b 1865) who is listed with her and a brother Jasire on the 1880 census. I believe that Lucy is the daughter of William Ridings (Est b 1818) also listed in Claiborne County TN in 1880 and 1870 census. The 1860 and 1850 census show this family in Lee County Virginia.

I am most interested in identifying the father of William Andy Brumit. Lucy is listed as divorced on the 1880 census. I have seen a word family tree that lists the father as John Brummet but I can find no other information on this individual. Any help would be appreciated

Robert N. Ridings WWII Army Airborne Paratrooper

Looking for any information on this trooper. He was probably born between 1908 and 1926. Would like him or his family to contact me about a history project which involves him.

He was in the Army Airborne during WW2. He would have been in the Engineer Battalion, HQ & S or medical. He at one time served with the 17th Airborne Division/139th Engineer Battalion. He might have been attached to or detached from this Battalion or possibly transferred to the 101st or the 82nd Airborne when the 17th was disbanded in 1945.

My Father in Law was a part of this unit and we are in the process of writing a book about the Battalion. I'd like a summary of his life since the service. This will be in the book in the biography section.

I have also succeeded in getting these WW2 Heros to touch base again with their comrades after not seeing each other for almost 60 years. Their reunions have been wonderful.

Not too many people know how much the 17th Airborne did for the war and it's too bad. They were an important piece to the puzzle and should not be overlooked or forgotten.

This project is so important because 17 million personnel files were destroyed in the 1973 file in St. Louis MO. I want to make sure that these men will never be forgotten and will be put in the history books for generations to come!

Thank you for all leads to help me on this tribute to our WW2 Heros.

Sincerely,
Tammy Paynter
tpaynter@centurytel.net
I would like to connect with descendants of John Ridings (see birth and death dates above). I think I am descended from this line through his daughter Melinda (Malinda). My 3rd great-grandmother was Millie Ridings born about 1818 in South Carolina, died after 1880 in Pickens County, Georgia. I think Millie was a nickname, possibly for Melinda. I have found no other Ridings families in Pickens County, leading me to believe John Ridings' daughter Melinda and my Millie are the same person. Two of John Ridings' grandsons, Rice Ross Ridings (Jr., I assume) and Alfred Webb Ridings married into my Roper line.

Millie Ridings married William Hogan (born about 1817 SC -- died after 1880 GA). They had three children, Frances C. "Kit" Hogan, John Hogan and Sarah Hogan. Frances Hogan married Jesse White -- they are my 2nd great-grandparents. John Hogan married Nancy Didamae Padgett. Sarah married John Buchannan.

I am looking for the ancestors of Alice Riden/Riding/Reading/Ridings, who married Daniel McCarty Fitzhugh in 1771 in Stafford Co., VA. The family also has connections to King George Co., VA. I've seen that there were a few Ridings from that area. Around the same time period of 1771, there was a Jenny Riding married to Richard Buckner in King George Co. Could she be a sibling?

Any help woul be much appreciated.

Thanks!
Kelly Selcher

Hi Patty,
Going back to your Peter Joseph - he is my ancestors' brother so yes we are on the same line. Where did you get all of your information? I know it is posted on familysearch.org with pedigree chart and I have that information as well. I made my trip to Salt Lake and copied a book on microfilm from a Ridings researcher. You probably realize that you have a type on the name Mary BrOtherton - or who knows maybe I have the type. Dublin, Ire. in the Parish Church, to Paulina RUOSS b 1825c Germany.

Wedding Cert: said his father was George RIDINGS(farmer)
Paulina's parents were John RUOSS (manufacturer) and mother Paulina (KNOTT??)

George Lane RIDINGS and Paulina went to New Zealand on the "Chapman" 1861.

They had 4 children:
Walter George; Katie Mary(Catherine); Herman Carl and James Lane.

I would to hear from any RIDINGS families from Ireland that went elsewhere in the world, or connected to the above family.
Who were James Lane RIDINGS siblings??

Regards Ngaire

looking for ridings ancestors in alabama and georgia
My grandfather was Joseph Wiley Ridings son of Hosa
Dean Ridings and Rodicie Parsade Crenshaw of Georgia
and then Alabama. Joe married Sarah Chadwick in
Georgia and she died there. The family moved to Marion
co Alabama where he married my grandmother Ellis May
Clayton daughter of Merrill Winston Clayton and
Paralee Knight. Joe or Joseph had brothers, Turner,
George, Wes, Jep, and sister Ovaline.I have lots of
ancestry info after Alabama, but would like to share
info with someone who has info on prior years in
Georgia and Hosa and Dicies parents and grandparents.
THANKS
