RIZZO Family from Bronte and/or Catania, Sicily

I know I am looking for a needle in a haystack with the surname Rizzo, especially from Sicily, but I will give this board a shot!

My maternal grandfather was Guiseppe Rizzo, born in 1886 in either Bronte or Catania, Sicily. He was an only son and had about 5 sisters, many of whom came to the US around 1906 to Manhattan. Does anyone know anything about the towns of Bronte or Catania in Sicily? I believe that Catania is more of a city than Bronte which is further inland, but both towns border Mount Etna and I remember my grandfather always speaking of the great volcano.

My grandfather, Guiseppe Rizzo married my grandmother, Anna Salanitro, in 1912 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church on 115th Street in Manhattan. Anna Salanitro was born in 1889 in a little town north of Bronte and Catania named San Fratello. Anna and Guiseppe had 8 children, 4 girls and 4 boys. & 18 grandchildren.

If any can suggest how I can learn more about Bronte, Catania or anything about Rizzo's who came from this area of Sicily I would greatly appreciate it!

Regards,
Linda
grafinthree@comcast.net

trying to trace grandmothers family

My grandmother was Fannie(Feni) Rizzo. She immigrated from sicily in 1905 we think with the whole family and married George W Colon in 1918. Her Father was Fransesco and her mother Emilia we believe he owned a lace factory but do not know which town in Sicily. All we know is they departed from Palmero and ended up in New York though there is no trace of them going through Ellis Island. She had one sister Emilia known as Minnie, and others which we think are Anna and Caterina. She also had a brother Joseph who was in the NY police. I can find no trace on any of the census except for Fannie in 1930. Please can anyone help.

Rizzo from Sicily

I am looking for relatives of Sam Rizzo. He was the brother of my grandmother Mary (Maria) Rizzo. As the story goes, their father Sam was married to Madelina Jenke who died at age 32 from appendicitis in Palermo. They were from St. Catherine Villanova (probably St. Caterina Villarmosa) where GGF Sam Sr. owed and olive and almond plantation. He remarried very quickly and his children, Sam, Mary, Joey and Mamie hated the stepwife.

Sam Jr. had an affair with a married women and around 1900 -1905 fled to America to escape being murdered. He settled in MONTANA. A couple of years later my grandmother came to America (with another woman and a child) to live with him.

Brother Joey also had an affair with a married women. He was murdered and found a couple of months later in the river.

My grandmother married Rosario Cipolla (Chipalla) and lived in the Chicago and Rockford, Illinois areas before moving to San Bernardino, California where she died in 1967.

If this sounds familiar to anyone I'd love to hear from you.

Rizzo Family in Portland, Maine

I am searching for information about Antonio Rizzo and family who lived in Portland, Maine beginning approx 1900-1910. The family appears in Maine beginning in the 1910 US Census. Children were Joseph (b. ~1902), Mary (b. ~1903) & Rose (b. ~1907). Beginning in the 1920's my relative Madeline Motzi (later married = Madeline Alexander) also lived with the Rizzo's.

I am a descedant of Giovanni Mazzei from Cotronei, Calabria. Giovanni had a brother Nicola. The children of Nicola were Giusppe, Caterina, Leonardo, Francesco & Salvatore. Giuseppe (son of Nicola) and Leonardo visited their "cousins" Antonio & Mary Rizzo in Portland Maine in 1912. I do not know how the Rizzo family was related to the Mazzei family. Perhaps Giovanni & Nicola had a sister? There is also relation to John Amoroso, but I do not know how he was related.

My great- grandfather, Giuseppe Angelo Mazzei (changed to Joseph Angelo Motzi in the US) was born ~ 1883 and came from Italy in ~1891 with his father Giovanni Mazzei. I believe his mother's name was Madelina Belcastro. Giuseppe had a brother Samuel and a sister Teresa. Giuseppe's first wife was Catherine Gigliotti. They married in the US ~1903 and she died ~1907 after the birth of their second child Madeline. Their first child was my grandfather John F. Motzi (baptized John Mazzei in Old Forge, Pennsylvania, USA). Giuseppe married again in ~1915 to Pasqualina Dimauro and they had 4 other children.

There was a Mr. Franco Mazzei who lived in Cotronei in the early 1960's whom I believe was a descendant of Nicola.

I would be interested in corresponding with any relatives or those who have information about the people listed here.
Michael Joseph Rizzo

I am searching for my dads father, my grandfather, whom I believe to be a MICHAEL JOSEPH RIZZO, born in Boston Massachusetts on December 21, 1926. At the time my father, James Daniel Rizzo was born on September 27, 1946 in EDENTON NORTH CAROLINA to a Ruby Lee Grant Rizzo, Michael was in the NAVY. Michael and Ruby divorced by the time my father was around three years old. I know that Michael had two brothers, Frank and Jim who were also in the NAVY. I have black and white family photos of Michael and Ruby with my father when he was around 2 1/2 yrs old on the front porch of Michael Rizzos mothers home in BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS in February of 1949 in about 4 inches of snow. In the pictures Michael, Frank and Jim are all wearing their black NAVY overcoats and hats. I know that after Michael and Ruby divorced, Michael later remarried and had other children. Upon my birth in September of 1968, my father wrote to Michael in Boston telling him of my birth, and that was the last correspondence they had.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if anyone has ANY information, please feel free to contact me! My email is: dawnielsterling@hotmail.com
