Looking for any connections to a Patrick Roach, born in Ireland around 1870 and immigrated to the United States (Pittsburgh) around 1895. To my best understanding, had 5 children with wife Mary (Dorkin), including: James, John, Michael, Edward, Frances, and Margaret. Also from my understanding, the children (or atleast a subset of them) changed their name to Roche in the 1920s. My Grandfather was James Leo, born in 1903.

Names from Holy Family cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey (1849-1984)

These are all of the Roach/Roache names from the LDS film for Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City (#1412700). Each group of names was from a different card. The spacing just makes it easier to read the list. They include name, age, what I assume to be the plot, and either the death or burial date, it didn't say which. At the bottom I grouped the names from the list that had the same plot. I completely forgot to check for names spelled Roche but I'll do that at a future visit. I hope this is helpful to someone.
David Roach of Orange County

During research on my book which includes the family of Francis Meadows Sr. of Orange County, I discovered an Orange County Circuit Court case which provides insight into David Roach and his family. This is one of those cases where the printed abstract fails to provide any clue to the depth of the family records contained within.

THE CASE OF REUBEN ROACH ETC. VS. EXECUTORS OF WILLIAM MONROE, Orange County Circuit Court Case, 1784-001: The case is fascinating and centers on the family (and estate) of David Roach of Orange County. As most readers already know, David Roach was an English immigrant who appears to have been a foreman at the Orange County estate of Ambrose Madison. Shortly before his death, he lost the use of his limbs, asked to be relieved of personal property taxes, and took out a mortgage on his property.

David died in 1742 leaving a widow, Frances, and 3 young children (note: one paper suggests that there may have been 4 children; all other papers indicate 3 children): Rueben Roach, Ruth (Mrs. William Bohannon), and Anne (Mrs. John Harris). David's widow, Frances, hired another English immigrant - William Monroe - to assist with the farm and soon married him in 1743. William Monroe assumed all of David’s assets and paid off David’s note. By the time of William's death in 1767 he had built David’s estate into one which was relatively prosperous. William’s will provided for his widow and gave a slave named Betty to his step-daughter Ann Harris. His other step-children were not mentioned (possibly the result of an earlier law suit in which Reuben and James Madison sought David's land willed him by Ambrose Madison.) The remainder of his estate, including his widow's portion following her death, was to be used to set up a fund "to be disposed of towards schooling such poor children as my executors shall think most in want." Aside: William Monroe is considered the first philanthropist from that area of Virginia and Greene County Virginia today has a school named in his honor.

None of David Roach’s children received any of his estate upon either their father’s or their step-father’s death. The law suit was filed as a remedy. NUMEROUS depositions ironically state that William Monroe did NOT give his step-children ANY education and treated them poorly.

Although, no direct relationships are identified, affiants knew exactly when David died, exactly what he possessed, and details of William Monroe’s treatment of his step-children. This intimacy signals that some were related. The only relationship identified is that of John Bryson who is named as the Godfather of David Roaches’ children (note: it is possible that it is grdfather, but I lean towards godfather). A godfather would have been a person of importance and respect within the family and I believe that John Bryson Sr. was Frances Roach Monroe’s step-father. It would not have been at all surprising to have named her step-father as the godfather of her children. (NOTE: By the time of the law suit, both Ann Moss Meadows Bryson and John Bryson Sr. were dead.) Supporting this theory is that testimony was received from John Bryson, Jr. and his sister Mary Bryson Hackett, the only known children of John Byron and Ann Moss Meadows Bryson and like others knew specific details about the Roach family. Additionally, a Rachel Williams stated that she lived with Frances Roach Monroe’s mother (likely Ann Bryson) and it appears that she was likely another daughter of Richard Meadows and Ann Moss.

This is an abbreviated account of the case. But, I believe that David's wife was Frances Meadows. As many readers know, the Roach and Meadows families were intertwined for years. And, although I have no Roach ancestors, I hope that descendants of David will find this information helpful.

Best, Jan

I'm looking for information on the following families. Is anyone aware of who the children of George were?

1880 Doddridge Co. Jno W. Tucker age 30, Annie his wife age 50 and had been married one year. Robert Roach age 20 is listed as a stepson of Jno Tucker. I would guess that there is a connection between Annie and her son Robert to the other Roach family living in Doddridge Co. in the 1880 census. The following is from an on line genealogy: "George Lewis Roach of Fauquier Co., VA m. Margaret Davis. in 1866 Doddridge Co. George was married before to Anne B. Gill who was suppose to have died 1865. George and Anne also had a daughter Annie E. Roach."

George Lewis Roach was age 52 in 1880 and my Robert's mother Annie was 50. Could Annie actually be be a sister of George or possible his X-wife.

From Orange County, NC in 1806 to Maury, McNairy, and Hardin Counties in Tennessee to Hunt County in Texas, William Buck Roach scattered his seeds. He married Sarah CLENDENING first and then Juliett WILSON. Some of his children were James Fisher, William Thadius, Thomas Sylvestor, Justinius Josey, Richard Crump, Elizabeth, Mary Catherine, Sammantha, and James Wilson. It is reported that William Buck possibly had brothers James, John, Ed(mond). Other names which could be linked are Manley, Eaton, Sherman.

Oh, to know more about our roots!

Sarah sss1942@lycosmail.com

I am helping a family track down their relatives and have hit a brick wall. We are looking for information on Asberry Roach, b. March 1849 in or around Pittsylvania County Virginia. He married Mary Jane Holland around 1868-69. They had a son, Norman Roach who married Ellie Virginia Edwards. Norman and Ellie had a son, James W Roach. Asberry is listed in the 1910-20-30 Federal census records as living in the township of Banister. He does have a few records entered in places where his first name is spelled Osberry. There is a family rumor that Asberry may have changed his name from something else to Asberry but we have nothing to confirm or contradict this. That is about all we can find on Asberry. Does anyone have any information on this Virginia family line? We are really at a standstill.

I am trying to locate an Angelina Roach who may have married a COX sometime between 1750 and 1780. They had sons Henry, David and James. Henry was born abt. 1755/1774 and resided in Edgefield Co., SC in the late 1700's and early 1800's. He then migrated to Wilkinson Co., MS. He died in Wilkinson Co., MS 24 Ju 1818. He married Nancy Cason before 1807. David was born 10 Mar 1779 in SC. He died 18 Dec 1848 in Amite Co., MS. He married Brinay Glanton 4 Dec 1800 in SC. He migrated to MS the same time his brother Henry did. James is believed to have stayed in SC. The only information known about him is that he died 22 Jan 1826.

Ref Post 4 - Littleberry Roach, NC/SE

As a lurker on Rootsweb, I've been getting the mailing list archives for some time, watching for a connection to what little I know about my Roach ancestors.

I've been following the numerous posts about Littleberry (Berry) Roach around Cheraw NC/SC, and noticed mention by a poster about Denton, TX.

I live about 40 miles from Denton, and am willing to go in search of burial sites in that area, provided I'm given some fairly solid clues. I'm NOT offering to do research at the courthouse; I'm an old retired guy, and should have time, but I do still work a part time job, and I have my own courthouses to search.

I have an acquaintance who was raised nearby Denton, and is a Denton County deputy sheriff. He know the county very well, and has told me about a number of old cemeteries that are on private land - he's even offered to take me to some of them.

So if you have some solid information about a burial site, I'm willing to go hunt for it - it might take me a while, but I'll give it a shot.

By the way, as I said, I'm just a lurker (have been for several years), and I must confess that I CANNOT FIND THOSE POSTS that have been sent to me as a mailing list subscriber. I've gone to the Roach archives, and they're not there ... I don't know where the h--- they are.

(I'm descended from John Alexander Roach, who moved to Texas from Medon, TN, in the early 1880's. His parents are a stone wall for me. If anybody can help out on this info, I'll be forever in your debt.)

Gary Roach

Seeking any information on George Roach born about 1868 probably in Lincoln or Franklin County, Tennessee. George Roach was living in the household of his older brother, William or John William Roach in 1880 in Hardin County, Tennessee. Included in the household were William age 21 born in Tennessee; Susan (Susson) Roach, mother, age 50 born in Tennessee; George Roach age 12 born in Tennessee; Rubin or Reuben Holland age 23, brother-in-law, and Senthey (Cynthia) Roach Holland, wife of Rubin . John William Roach, George Roach, and Senthey or Cynthia Roach were the children of James P. Roach who evidently died between 1870-80. Susan Roach was the widow of James P. Roach. Appreciate any information on any of the above. Thanks, Shirley Roach King

Need help from Michigan Roaches - looking for descendants of James Roach b.1895 NY, lived in Jersey City, moved to Michigan. Married Ruth Chrisman of NY in Detroit in 1925. d.1965 in MI.

I'm looking for descendants of James Roach b.1895 in NY. He was a twin. His parents immigrated from Ireland. The family lived in Jersey City and had many children but only the twins were living by the time they were 14. Mom was widowed by then, too. Twin brother Edward died overseas in WWI in 1918. James was in the Army and around 1925 was stationed at Madison Barracks near Watertown, NY. This next part I'm not sure is true, this is what I need to verify -- he met Ruth Chrisman in Watertown & brought her to Detroit, Michigan in 1925. They got married in a judges chambers & had a son, James, born in a hospital in Detroit on Sept. 9, 1926. (I'm not sure these dates are exactly right but this is what my grandmother, Ruth Chrisman told me.) They all went back to Watertown a year later and only James returned to Michigan when they seperated. That was the last time he saw them. He was out of the Army by then. Ruth later divorced him by an Enoch Arden divorce because she couldn't find him. He probably remarried and had a whole seperate life in Michigan. They might not have known anything about this. I do know he died in Michigan in Feb. 1965 (from SSDI records).

Does this sound anything like anyone's father or grandfather, or even great-grandfather? Do any family stories match up to this story?

Is anyone willing to do some checking for me? I believe James to be my grandfather but have been unable to find documentation so far. There is an off chance that none of this is true and Ruth was sent to "visit" relatives in MI to have an illegitimate child. I am pursuing that line, also, on another board but I have no reason to disbelieve my grandmother and everything else she told me that I have been able to verify has been correct.

Please reply to this message and I'll get the email. Thanks. Joanne

My mother, along with her sister and several brothers, was put into an orphanage when she was 2 years old. We know her real parents were Bessie Devore-Roach, born 1901 in Sparksville, KY and Charles Jackson Roach, born in KY in 1898. He died in 1947 at age 49, and is buried at New Raven (church) cemetary in Hope, Indiana, (Bartholemew County) Bessie died in 1966. They had 7 children. Arlan Woodrow aka 'Bill', Carl, Vernon, Dennis, Dorathy, Edward (who died in infancy in 1933) and my mother, Cathlene. Cathlene, born 5/15/30, was adopted by John and Barbara McLean of Louisville, KY and They changed her name to Janet Barbara McLean. I am searching for the Roach family and would like to built a family tree. I would also like to trace the family to see if there is any Native American heratige. It looks like that might be the case. Any help would be GREAT!

All -

IF we are to believe that the Littleberry Roach who married Margaret See was killed in an Indian Massacre in 1763, we cannot believe that a long list of children some researchers attribute to that union were actually theirs. They may have had one child, possibly two, but not more.
It is more likely those children belonged to one Ruben/Reuben Roach.
Obituary for Dr. R. W. Roach - Wapanucka, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Obituary appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 17 January 1907 in the town of Wapanucka, Johnston County, Oklahoma (Indian Territory)

DR. R. W. RAOCH PASSES AWAY

The home of Mrs. Joanna Roach was on the night of January 10th surrounded in gloom and hearts were plunged into a deluge of grief, because of the death of her husband, Dr. R. W. Roach. Dr. Roach was born in Red River County, Texas, on the 14th of August 1859. He attended the public and high schools of his state, qualifying himself as a teacher, which profession he followed in his native state for seven years, after which he attended the medical collage of Physicians and Surgeons at St. Louis. In 1891, he came to the Indian Territory to practice medicine. In 1882 was married to Miss Joanna Chote. This union was blessed with four daughters and three sons. He continued to practice medicine for eleven years, during which time the lives of many were prolonged by his skill as a practitioner and the sufferings of hundreds was relieved. About five years ago he gave up the practice of medicine and moved on his farm three miles west of Wapanucka and devoted time to farming and stock raising to the day of his death.

No man was more devoted to his wife and children than was our friend. He was brave and generous, a model of courage and fidelity, often generous to a fault; no man was truer to a friend than he. Hours were not too lonely, winds too piercing or nights too dark for him to go to the rescue of a friend in distress. He always looked on the bright side of life when others were oppressed, overshadowed with dark clouds, surrounded by gloom and dreary hours, his was a life of kind words, a life of sunshine of smiles and joy. Besides his own family and relatives there are many who moan his loss.
Carlow, Ireland to Ontario, Canada

I am hoping to find more information on Catherine (Brennan) Roach and John Roach. At least one of their children, Thomas, was born in County Carlow, probably near Leighlinbridge (after Catherine was widowed she lived next door to John and Mary (Rice) Brennan, some of whose children's baptismal records are at St. Lazarian's in Leighlinbridge).

Catherine was born about 1812 and died sometime after 1861, possibly in Glenelg, Ontario. John was born about 1810 and died before 1851. Their children were all born in Ireland.

The children I know of were:
Mary Roach born Feb 1835, married John Sullivan in Glenelg. I do have soem information on their descendents.
Bridget Ellen, b May 1837, married Andrew Priel in Holland Twp. I do have extensive information on her.
Michael Roach, b 1839, living in Glenelg in 1865, no further information
Margaret Roach, b 1841, no further information
Thomas Roach, b 1843, married Cecelia McGrath of Holland Twp and moved to Mara, Ontario Co., Ontario.
Patrick Roach, b 1845, died 20 Mar 1926 in Wellington, Ontario.

Chris Starfire
