I have started the ROCHELLE DNA PROJECT with my 1st cousin who is a direct male line descendant from John ROCHELLE/ROTCHEL of New Hanover Co., N.C. who bought land there in 1786.

We need other male descendants with the ROCHELLE/ROTCHEL/ROACHEL surname or any variation of it to help.

My grandmother was born in Union, SC but I believe Rochelle was her name that she took from a stepfather. In any event her maiden name was Vera Mooney (born June 4, 1930). Her mother's name was Sylvia Mooney from Union, SC and at some point there was a marriage or a birth to a Rochelle that hence lead to my entire family as I know it having Rochelle as a last name. Any information on the connection between Rochelle and Mooney or Rochelles from Union would be helpful. Thanks.

Thanks Salonje. He could very well be a son of one of the other brothers. There was a Philemon, William, Rufus, & a Robert but I'm not sure if any of them but Rufus stayed in Mississippi. My gg-grandfather went to Arkansas and then Louisiana. Would you mind given me a guess on the age of this Isaiah? I would like to see if I can find any info on him and I also know that there were at least one other branch of Rochelle's living in MS at that time. I really appreciate you answering my message. My name is Salonje Rochell and my grandmother is from Collins, Mississippi. She is the youngest of 12 children and we now reside in California. She married a man named Isaiah Rochell(e) [still a family debate on whether or not to spell our last names with the "e" on the end] and he died approx. 5 years ago. I believe he was a racially mixed man (Caucasian and Native American or something, my grandmother doesn't remember exactly) and he married my grandmother when she was very young, 21 years old to be exact. Since he died and was in jail for many years, I never got to speak with him about his parents and my grandmother doesn't remember (or claims she doesn't-traumatized I guess). He could very well be the son of one of John Thomas Rochelle's brothers. I hope this helps!

The city of Rochelle NY is named for all the families that emigrated from the region around the port of Rochelle France. In all probability, Rochelle is not your fasmiy's real surname, it is in all probability some other French surname, Rochelle only signifies where they came from as in John Doe de la Rochelle. At some point in time in the 1800s some families dropped the Rochelle from their names while others Kept the rochelle and made the real surname a middle or family name, thus the difficukty in tracing lineage..

Are you still checking these message boards? My grandfather, Henry (1895-1971), wrote a family history in the 60's--primarily a history of the Rochelle's and Hampils in Texas. His father, Joseph Edmond Rochelle (b. 1846 in Alsace-Lorraine) died in Texas in 1897. Is this your grandfather?! This Joseph Edmond Rochelle had three brothers-Felix, John and Pierre. Are you then related to Mitchell?

Mary Nickell Rochelle, 94, Guthrie, Ky., died Monday, April 23, 2007, at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Charles L. Nickell Memorial Cemetery, Centerville, with the Rev. Joseph Nickell officiating.

Burial will be in Charles L. Nickell Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Cook-Webb Funeral Home.

Cook-Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary passed to her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ early Monday at her home in Guthrie, Ky. She was born in Lobelville, and raised at Sugar Creek in Centerville. She graduated from Centerville High School and attended Murray State University on a basketball scholarship in 1931. Mary began teaching in Hickman County in 1932. She married Alvis Rux Rochelle in 1934. Together they lived in Lebanon, Haydensville, Ky., and Elkton, Ky., but mostly in Guthrie, Ky.

Mary became a homemaker once she had Al Jr. and was always a wonderful supporter of her husband and family. She loved athletics and competition, but only after education. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for 50-plus years and active in the Guthrie Senior Citizens. Mary was proud of her basketball experiences from elementary through college, and was very honored to have her picture with her sister and Minnie Pearl admitted to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame for display. Her favorite hobbies included going antiquing and to auctions. She also enjoyed card games, especially Rook. She cooked thousands of meals, but her family could eat these and thousands more. Some of Mary's specialties in the kitchen included: fried chicken, sweet corn, apple sauce, jams, pecan pie, fudge, caramel candy and canning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Sula Nickell; brothers, Paul Nickell, Hugh Nickell, Charlie Nickell, Marcus Nickell; and son, Charles Rochelle. She is survived by sons, Al (Myrna) Rochelle Jr. of Guthrie, Ky., and Marvin (Judy) Rochelle of Childersburg, Ala.; daughter, Rita (Jimmy) Carmichael of Jackson; daughter-in-law, Becky Rochelle of Clarksville; grandchildren, Russell (Debbie) Willis, Alvis (Amy) Rochelle III, Michael (Lori) Rochelle, Kelly (Chris) Nye, Collin (Andy) Barr, Travis Rochelle, Blake Rochelle, Katie (Nathaniel) Pedde, and Robert Rochelle; great-grandchildren, Claiborne Willis, Merritt Willis, Meredith Nye, Braden Nye, Billy Barr, Mia Rochelle, and Mary Kinsley Nye; brothers, Joe Nickell and Jim Nickell; sisters, Ann Reeves, Amy Graves, Christine McClanahan, Martha Kelsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

I am looking for information on the Edward Rochell(e) family of Wake County, North Carolina. He was b. abt. 1804 and d. after 1880. His wife's name was Eliza. They had quite a few children, including Sarah, Candis, Thomas, Caroline, John, Mary, Martha, Mosona, and Francis. I believe the wife died before 1870 but after 1864. Edward's father and mother were Thomas Rochell(e) and Charity Davis Rochell(e). Thomas was b. abt. 1770 and d. in 1848. Any helph would be appreciated.

she was the daughter of Gilbert Rochelle and Sarah Humphrey's. I have no knowledge of her being born in Tenn.
Gilbert shows up in census records in Onslow Co., N.C. in 1850. I is hard to read the wife's name, it may be the Monah/Lanoh you are looking for.

I am working on my wife's family, and we know virtually nothing about them. Her father was Charles Rochelle, b. 1923, in White Cliffs, AR (north of Texarkana). His mother married multiple times, and buried 5 husbands. Charles married Trula Whisenant, who had a sister, Oma Mae. Other names elude me right now, but hope you know something about this line.

Please respond if you know anything, and I will get my notes out for better information.

My grandmother was born January 25,1915 in Texas (somewhere in the Houston or Galveston area). She was given the name Annie Rochelle. She was adopted in Galveston Co. by William David Thomssen and her name was changed to Lois Erminie Thomssen.

The only information I have about her biological family is that her mother's name was MIONA ROCHELLE. Miona was very young when she had my grandmother and was unable to raise her.

I do know that MIONA ROCHELLE was in Houston, Harris County, TX during the 1930's.

If anybody has any information about MIONA ROCHELLE and her family I would greatly appreciate it.

My great grandfather was Thomas Goodman Rochelle b. 1869 Arkansas d. 1951 Louisiana he married Odelia "Della" Henley in 1897. His father was David Rochel/Rochelle b. 1840 in TN his mother was Jane b. 1846 Arkansas.

I am almost positive that David's father was Thomas Goodman Rochelle b. 1819 Alabama.

Any information would be appreciated. I really would be interested to know how David and Jane died as my ggrandfather was an orphan and I find no record of David or Jane after 1880.

"Thurman T. Rochelle
Mr. Rochelle, 77, of Charlotte, passed away November 5, 2005 at his residence. He was born October 4, 1928 in Pender County, NC, the son of the late T.T. Rochell and Lessie Mogan Rochelle.
A native North Carolinian, Thurman made Charlotte his home after a voluntary tour of duty with the paratroopers in the Far East. Thurman was associated with Eckerd Drugs for sixteen years in various capacities, from buyer to general manager of Charlotte area operations. More recently, and for approximately ten years, Thurman was associated with the Consumer Products Division of GTE-Sylvania, where he was responsible for sales in the major portion of the Carolinas. He is a member of the M.L.S. Charlotte Board of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte chapel, officiated by Dr. H.W. 'Buddy' Pigg, Jr. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Thurman is survived by his son, Mike Rochelle and wife, Nancy, of Charlotte; a brother, Russell H. There is a Zalphus Rochelle and a Zalphus Alderman Rochelle, Jr. in the will books in the town of Boydton, Virginia. That's in Mecklenburg County, Va.

Family Names with the "dit" name Rochelle

I'm looking for Rochelles originally from Canada who moved to Massachusetts or New York in the early 1800s. At this time the American immigrantion officials frowned on the French Canadians using their extended names, as in Casimir Gautron de la Rochelle and orderd them to shorten their names and gave them a choice of either the retaining the name Gautron or Rochelle as the last name or arbitrarily decided for them. The problem with Rochelle or La Rochelle is that it is what is called a "dit" name (referring to place of origin as in the port of Rochelle France, Gautron and a number of other surnames were the family surnames most assiciated with the "dit" Rochelle.
So at some point in tracing back a family tree, the family researcher has to know what family name was associated with Rochelle and that's my problem. I have my GGGrandfather Casimir Rochelle, but his parents apparently didn't use Rochelle as their last name and instead used Gautron or another possible 14 family surnames. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Judith, I'm probably, because Cora Cuthbertson/Rochelle was my dad's sister, so all of her kids would be my 1st cousins, and her grandkids would be my second cousins. I wrote a book about the Cuthbertsons in 1998, and have several pictures in it, some of her. I haven't worked on the Cuthbertsons since 98, but I do know that Dave Rochelle was listed as a hired hand on the 1900 census where Cora was listed as 12. She married him and had several children, then he died and left her a widow. Write me, Frances Cuthbertson/Foreman

Robert, My ggrandmother was Carrie Rochelle who married George Eakin. Carrie was born in NJ about 1840, her parents were Peter Rochelle and Ellen Mcclennen. Peter Rochelle and his wife moved to Ohio and then to Iowa. That is where they are buried. I don't show a Nancy Rochelle in that immediate family.
