Elias Rogoff, NYC 1900-1910

I am trying to find information about Elias Rogoff. He apparently officiated at the wedding ceremony of my paternal grandparents; I am trying to find out what temple or organization he was representing. He may be from the same area of Russia as the newlyweds. An Elias Rogoff is listed in the 1900 census in Manhattan; born in 1852 in Russia. His wife's name was listed as Pearl. If anyone has any information, I would be very grateful.
My great grandfather Moses Reuven Rogoff married twice. The first wife, Debbie, died. From that marriage Louis was born. Louis had a number of children, harold (harry), earl, helen, theodore. Louis was a barber I think. Moses was a rabbi/cantor/talmudic scholar. He married again to Jennie Edelson and had Herman, Julius, Rose, Rebecca, and Eli. Herman is my grandfather.

Write to me at this email address and we can share info. tapeguy1@yahoo.com I sent some pictures to Patty. She said she had those. They were from Jr.s graduation. I'm hoping to meet with Aunt Doris in the near future to get what information I can from her. She's the last remaining of the brothers and sisters. So little is known about grandma and grandpa Behnke. They never talked very much about what they did during their lifetime. I also have pictures of them and several of your mom and one of your dad. I've been hoping to contact your side of the family for a very long time. I would also like to contact Sue, Penny and or Bobby. Well write to me at the above address and we'll converse.

Ken

I don't remember you but do remember Jack, Grace, Irving (Junior) and Carol.
Please contact me. I'm just starting on this search for family members. As I remember after your mother died your father went away with all you kids and I haven't seen any of you since 1955. I did see Jack and Grace at Aunt Dorothy's funeral but have lost touch with them.

Your Cousin, Ken Behnke

Hi, Im tryig to trace my family tree and wonder if anyone out there can help me.

I am from the UK and my Grandfather was Max Rogoff (born circa 1900)

He had 7 brothers and sisters, Jack, Phillip,Charlie,Isaac,Anna,Kay and Eva.

The reason I am posting on here is because I know that at some stage after arriving from Poland, JACK emmigrated to the USA...but after that I don't know any more!

Can any one help?
Re: Rogoff Family

Dear Debi,

I'm researching my Rogoff ancestors and came across your email from a few years ago. My Rogoffs have names very similar to your husband's relatives.

I hired an archivist in Kiev to do some research for me and I've been able to trace the Rogoffs back to about 1820! My problem now is where does Max fit in. I think he may have been my uncle.

This is the line up I can document starting with Gersh Rogov in 1820. Notice how the name changed spellings.

Gersh Rogov fathered Zev (Volf)/Velvel) Rogoff who fathered 16 children. I believe Max may have been one of the 16.

How do I fit in? My grandmother was one of the 16 (Kasia). I can document 7 of the 16. They were all born between 1865 and 1883. Most were born in Kiev.

If Max was one of the 16, then his siblings would have been: Henya, Kasia, Solomon, Leya, Herschl, Yitka (and a twin sister who died in infancy), plus 9 more silblings. Of course all are now dead, but they left many offspring.

Some of the names of the offspring include: Moshe, Feiga,
Jacob, Norton, Leon, Walter, Anna, Abraham, Raymond, Harry, Henry, Bertha, Fanny, Michael, etc.

If Max's father was Zev (Velvel), then we have a match. Max's tombstone should name his father (Max son of _____.) Have you seen Max's stone to verify?

Sorry this message is so long. I get so excited when I get involved in family genealogy! I look forward to hearing from you.

Marti Asner

.

The movie theater chain was owned by a family named Rugoff, which could have been an alternate spelling of Rogoff.

My grandfather was Harry Rogoff, who came from a villiage in Russia near Poland. He was married to Lillian Nanes and was an editor for the Jewish Daily Forward. I think they lived in Brooklyn. They were divorced in 1916 and both remaried and had other children.

My father was Julian Rogoff. He died in 1983. I know Harry had a brother Abe, who had a son Richard. I believe there were other siblings but don't know who or where they were. Our family wasn't related to the movie-theater Rugoffs.

Rosalind Rogoff
My grandmother, RACHEL SIMON SEGAL, arrived in New York from the shtetl of ILYA in what then was the VILNA GUBERNYIA of LITHUANIA. Today, the shtetl has been repartitioned into BELARUS, about 100 miles from Minsk.

My father, BERNARD SEGAL, was born in 1909 in New York. When he was a little boy, his mother had ROGOFF cousins who lived near them in Brooklyn. The cousins owned a movie theatre. The single theatre eventually grew into quite a successful chain in the New York area.

Rogoff Family

Hi Shelly,
I am also related to the Rogoffs by marriage (actually, I will be next May). My fiancee's grandmother is Freda Rogoff. She was born 9/22/1914 and married Harry Hutner. Harry was born 1/28/1915 and died 6/28/1997. Freda Rogoff was the youngest of six children born to Max Rogoff and Rose Ginsberg. Freda's siblings are Fannie Ray Rogoff, Louis Rogoff, Sam Rogoff, Annie Rogoff and Ida Rogoff. I know that Freda and Annie are still living. I assume the first three siblings are deceased, but I am not sure about Ida. The father of this brood, Max Rogoff, was born in 1880. I don't have a month and day, and I'm not sure where he was born. Max died 2/10/1962 in New Haven, CT. I do not know who Max's parents and siblings were. Max married Rose Ginsberg. Rose was born 4/6/1886 in Russia and died 2/1/1983 in New Haven, CT. Rose was the daughter of Louie Ginsberg and Delores Fagan. If this sounds like the same family of Rogoffs, please respond.
Thanks, Debi

Shelly,
The names are so similar. I wish we could find a connection. But, if there is one, it must be several generations back. The Rogoffs I am researching would have immigrated to the New England area before 1920. Their three youngest children were all born in the United States, and they were born ca. 1908-1914. I will keep my eyes open for any connection.
Debi
