From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 788.

City of La Crosse

W. A.
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, JR. - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, JR.

Rank and organization: brigadier general, U.S. Army. Place and date: Normandy invasion, 6 June 1944. Entered service at: Oyster Bay, N.Y. Birth: Oyster Bay, N.Y. G.O. No.: 77, 28 September 1944. Citation: for gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, in France. After 2 verbal requests to accompany the leading assault elements in the Normandy invasion had been denied, Brig. Gen. Roosevelt's written request for this mission was approved and he landed with the first wave of the forces assaulting the enemy-held beaches. He repeatedly led groups from the beach, over the seawall and established them inland. His valor, courage, and presence in the very front of the attack and his complete unconcern at being under heavy fire inspired the troops to heights of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice. Although the enemy had the beach under constant direct fire, Brig. Gen. Roosevelt moved from one locality to another, rallying men around him, directed and personally led them against the enemy. Under his seasoned, precise, calm, and unfaltering leadership, assault troops reduced beach strong points and rapidly moved inland with minimum casualties. He thus contributed substantially to the successful establishment of the beachhead in France .

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient SPANISH AMERICAN WAR

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of The Congress the Medal of Honor to

LIEUTENANT COLONEL THEODORE ROOSEVELT
UNITED STATES ARMY

for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt distinguished himself by acts of bravery on 1 July, 1898, near Santiago de Cuba, Republic of Cuba, while leading a daring charge up San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, in total disregard for his personal safety, and accompanied by only four or five men, led a desperate and gallant charge up San Juan Hill, encouraging his troops to continue the assault through withering enemy fire over open countryside. Facing the enemy's heavy fire, he displayed extraordinary bravery throughout the charge, and was the frst to reach the enemy trenches, where he quickly killed one of the enemy with his pistol, allowing his men to continue the assault. His leadership and valor turned the tide in the Battle for San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Oyster Bay, New York

Cemetery: Young's Memorial Cemetery

Born: October 27, 1858 at New York, NY

Died: January 6, 1919

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/roose...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt

Note: This is not my ancestry.

I have been interested for many years in the Roosevelt family geneology.

It would seem that by now, the grandchildren of Elliott Roosevelt are married and have children of their own. Can anyone give a fifth generation of Roosevelts, including dates of birth?
lf so, can anyone also say where his grandchildren are residing and if any are pursuing political careers? I note that Elliott, III, who is 41, is partner in a Roosevelt Capital firm, belongs to the Dallas (TX) Council on Foreign Relations, and is on the board of the Jefferson Award Foundation. As one who has written ex-tensively on political dynasties, it has been a long time since any of FDR's heirs have taken to politics successfully.

Ruth Chandler Lindsley is the oldest of Elliott's twelve grandchildren at 47 and the youngest is Chandler Caroline Roosevelt at 39. One, Dana Donner Roosevelt (son of Wm. Donner Roosevelt) is apparently deceased.

James Hamilton Roosevlet

query dated 7 Sept 2002 should read James Hamilton not Hames (typo.) Am looking for descendants of James also. Family stories indicate that James' father married the governess that his father had hired for younger siblings. James was disinherited because father wanted to marry governess Catherine Jones. All three men were named James. Very confusing. Please e-mail me.

I'm looking for information on FDR's family, namely children and grandchildren, etc. I'd like to know the spouses of each child (I think there were 18 marriages between them all). Also, info on Sarah Delano Roosevelt's side would be appreciated as that is how I'm related to the family. I can trace Sarah's line back to 1477 in England so anyone who can help can gain literally thousands of names through the work I've done. Thanks.
