Yes, Doug,

I think the Samuel you are referring to was actually a "Royster" and not a Royston. The name is continully given as Royster in the land tax roles of Gloucester Co. The children of Richard Wiatt Royston, who you have listed only received their land after their father died. Samuel did not inherit his 75 acres like the Royston children did, but had it before Richard Wiatt Royston died.

I don't think there was a Lawrence Royston. You wouldn't happen to remember where you found the name Lawrence Royston would you? or was it just a typo?

Anyway, I thought I would clear a little of it up for you.

Mark Royston

Mary Royston, wife of John Pate 1677-1706, Gloucester County, Virginia?

John Pate was the oldest son of Col. Thomas Pate who died in Yorktown in 1703. Relatively little seems to be known about his life. Below I will present a timeline of his life and some additional information. To the best of my knowledge, this represents the most complete and comprehensive study on John Pate.

I would appreciate any information which could be provided to help answer the following questions:

1. What was the name of John's wife, and what is known about her? A Pate researcher had received unconfirmed information that John was married to a Mary Royston. After John died at only age 29, she married a second time (name unknown).

2. What are the names of John's children? Only one child is known, and that is Sarah Pate who married Col. Wilson Cary, whose father Miles Cary was a member of the Council of State. (See more below.) I assume that he had no sons since his 2100-acre plantation did not go to a Pate son after his death.

3. Does anyone have a copy of his will? There are several references to a will (see below). It is interesting that he left a will at all, since he was only 29 years old when he died.

4. What connections did he have to John Wills, or connections of the Pate family to the Wills family?

There is a plausible explanation why John Pate received recognition at such an early age. He was fourth generation of a family that had been prominent in Virginia, both in Gloucester County and colonial governemnt, and had inherited a large family estate. Many wealthy Virginia planters sent their sons back to England for education, and I believe the scholarly books in the Cary family's Ceelys Library, previously owned by John Pate, indicates that he had been well-educated.

A. J. Pate

_____________________________

TIMELINE OF JOHN PATE 1677-1706

1677 John, the first child of Col. Thomas and Elizabeth Pate, born on April 27, Abingdon Parish Register, Gloucester County, Virginia

1703 His father, Col. Thomas Pate died, about age 53.

1704 John owned 1100 acres on the Gloucester Rent Roll, Petsworth Parish, and 1000 acres on the King and Queen County Rent Roll. This was the Pate Plantation that his father Thomas inherited from his uncle John. John apparently inherited the plantation by primogeniture.

1705 The vestry of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, selected John Pate as a vestryman to replace a deceased member on October 3. John must have been an impressive young man, since he was only 28 years old. This was a position of honor and responsibility and said to be "represented by gentlemen still living upon their ancestral estates".

1706 The Council of State appointed John Pate as a Justice of the Peace for Gloucester County, March 28, along with Thomas Read and Phillip Smith.

1706 John Pate is shown as a vestryman in the vestry book at its next meeting on April 23. Then at the next meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased.

1706 At the next meeting vestry meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased. Tragically, he was only 29 years old, dying between April 23 and October 9 of 1706.

1715 "Aug 16: John Wills: King and Queen County: 130 acres together with a little island being included adjoining to a tract of land devised to said Wills by John Pate, in his last will. Bounded by the main creek of Poropotank." Land Patents # 10 1710-1719 pg 243 on reel 10: Library of Virginia Archives Section.

c. 1728 John's daughter, Sarah c.1705-1783, married Col. Wilson Cary c.1701-1772, scion of a prominent and wealthy family. Their second daughter, Mary, was thought to be George Washington's "first sweetheart".

1744 On August 30, "Records of Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia", refers to "1141 acs. granted to Wingfield Webb & Richard Pate, Gentlemen, 1650, and by divers conveyances assigned to Wilson Cary".

_____________________________

Published references to John Pate

This John Pate is possibly the father of Mrs. Wilson Cary. I have in my library several volumes bearing the autograph "John Pate, 1706," on the title page above that of Colonel Wilson Cary (possibly his son-in-law), and to increase the probabilities, I would add, that I have also a volume showing in like manner the signature of Colonel Thomas Milner, and beneath it that of his son-in-law, Colonel Miles Cary. Now Colonel Wilson Cary in his will devises to his son lands lying on both sides of Poropotank, in the counties of Gloucester and King and Queen. These Gloucester lands, it is true, may have been subsequent purchases, and thus my theory that Colonel Cary acquired them through marriage might be untenable, still there is nothing to show that Miles Cary may not have been induced to invest in these very lands by the fact of his elder brother already having acquired property in Gloucester by marriage. However this may be, there certainly had been intermarriages between the Cary, Pate and Wills families.

"Some Prominent Virginia Families", by Louise Pecquet du Bellet, 1907.

_____

Among the remnants of the Ceelys library are several books (e.g., Dryden's Miscellany Poems, iii, 1693, and v, 1703; Echard's Ecclesiastical History, 1702) bearing on the title- page the signature of "John Pate," the last with the date 1706 appended. Moreover, Colonel Wilson Cary by will disposed of lands lying on Poropotank Creek in Gloucester and King and Queen, the acquisition of which was not readily explainable except on the assumption of inheritance. It appears also from casual mention in the York records that Miles Cary was administrator of the estate of Edward Pate and that-a Miles Cary (probably Miles, Jr., of Potash Creek) was executor of John Pate under a will, now lost with the Gloucester records; while John Pate appears on the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls of 1704 as the owner of lands on Poropotank in Gloucester and King and Queen.

"The Virginia Carys", by Fairfax Harrison, 1919

_____

In 1715, one John Wills patents "130 acres in Gloucester, bounded by the main creek of Poropotank, adjoining a tract, devised to said Wills by Mr. John Pate in his last will." This John Pate is possibly the father of Mrs. Wilson Cary. I have in my library several volumes bearing the autograrph "John Pate, 1706," on the title page above that of Colonel Wilson Cary (possibly his son-in-law), and to increase the probabilities, I would add that I have also a volume showing in like manner the signature of Colonel Thomas Milner, and beneath it that of his son-in-law, Colonel Miles Cary. Now Colonel Wilson Cary in his will devises to his son lands lying on both sides of Poropotank, in the counties of Gloucester and King and Queen. However this may be, there certainly had been intermarriages between the Cary, Pate and Hills families.

"The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", July 1901

Hope you can help me.

I recently discovered that my dad's uncle's daughter Jane Miller (my cousin) married Ackley Kendall Royston in 1949. They had a son Ackley Kendall, Jr.

Ackley Sr. was the son of Wilmer Royston who was from Fauquire & Shenandoah Cos.

Anyway, short of sending a letter to Ackley Jr. (who of couse has no idea who I am), I thought I'd start here -

I am wondering if any of you might be related to this branch of the Roystons?

Many Thanks,
Lisa

My Grandmother was Lucy E. Royston. She was born in 1906 or so in Boyce or White Post Virginia. Her father was John Royston who was married twice. His first wife died, then later he married my grandmother's mother Elizabeth Sipe. I know that John Royston had two sets of children. One with his first wife, and one w/ my great grandmother Sipe. The only name I remember from the fist set was Powell. Grandma had 2 sisters, Mary and Maude, and a brother Albert. There is also a Mamie Royston who was buried in Middleburg Virginia that I believe was John Royston's sister.

>> Dear Sir,
> I really need your help in finding more about
> the Royston family who left Gloucester County
> Va The main focus of my search is to try to
> find out where Samuel Royston got his 75 ac of
> land in Gloucester Va. in 1797. This land is
> surrounded by land of Richard Wyatt Royston ...
> Cooke family .... Burton family .. Booker
> family.. Thomas Royston ... Robert Royston...
> Fitzhugh. Due to loss of records in
> Gloucester County I am not able to make a
> connection of Samuel Royston to these other
> Families. I know that 1704 John Royston has 570
> ac in Petsworth Parish Gloucester Va. In 1770
> Richard W Royston has 800 ac and Conquest
> Royston has 200 ac. ( note Conquest is a Wyatt
> name) . 1782 Richards 800 has dropped to 424
> and Conquest still has 200. 1792 Richard W.
> Royston is listed as EST. 1793 Richard Est down
> to 224 and also comes a Thomas Royston with
> 200 ac.. Now SAMUEL ROYSTON comes on the books
> with 75 AC. 1805 Conquest has 42 ac....Samuel
> 75...RICHARD C ROYSTON of Georgia 122 ac and
> ROBERT ROYSTON OF GEORGIA 122 ac. LAWERANCE
> ROYSTON of Georgia has 122 ac.. Can you shed
> any light on who SAMUEL ROYSTON is and where he
> got his 75 ac. from. In later years this 75 ac
> is known as Roaches. Is it residue from the
> 1000 ac .....608ac.... or 1616 ac. Patents held
> by THOMAS ROYSTON 1662> 1669 in that same area
> of Petsworth parish in Gloucester Va. or is it
> a dower interest left by a marriage. I am so
> mixed up. Please help. Thank you ,
> Myra Horsley - Allmond Clements
I noticed a few names that were from elsewhere and just wanted to share this information with the list incase someone lost track of an ancestor since they seem to have moved around a lot.
Hi Jim,
I checked the SSDI for the sons of Harry S. and found that there was a Clarence C. who died in 1970 in Baltimore and might be a son of Harry. There was an Albert W. who died in 1984 in Jefferson Co. West Virginia who might also be a son. Then there was a Harry E. who died in 1976 and whose last residence was Gwyn Oak, Baltimore Co. I also found Arthur B. Beal who died in 1979 in Baltimore City. So I might try looking for obituaries for these folks to see what the obits say. Again thank you for all of your help.
For Ruth and others who may have noticed -

Sorry for the confusion. I was not too clear in my wording when I did the earlier message mentioning Shelman and a possibility for a record that might be he in 1930. And, it is just a possibility - I've still not run that one down in records for affirmation or exclusion - here's the record to which I was referring:

1930 Baltimore - Baltimore, Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland; Roll: 853; Page: 19A; Enumeration District: 122; Image: 733, Ancestry com Image 37 of 47, enumerated 14 April, 1535 Holbrook street, dwelling 185, family 194;
Head - Harry S Royston ( born abt 1877 (Harry Shellman Royston?)
ROYSTON 1850 Baltimore, MD - ERROR

Today I discovered an error which could trip some folks up. It sure made me work to resolve a situation in my family lines.

There is an entry in Baltimore for Henry and Harriott Royston where their dwelling and family number is different from others below them who showed up on the index I was using as Royston family. Hopefully the below will help you see the error.

Robert Little Royston in 1850 Census; 1850; Census Place: Baltimore Ward 4, Baltimore, Maryland; Roll M432_282, Page 34, Image 349; Ancestry com Image 70 of 178, enumerated 16 July 1850, dwelling 382, family 456 -
Henry Royston, 35, M, born in Virginia;
Harriott Royston, 45, F, born in Maryland;

dwelling 383, family 457 - Directly under them on the lines 25 through 33 is ambiguos as it raises the question that since they have a different dwelling and family number, are they a LITTLE or ROYSTON family due to the "ditto" or "do" marks. The census search index I used returned them as ROYSTON by surname, i.e."Robert Little ROYSTON" for him and all others in that family. The entire family is below, all born in Maryland, except for last two who appear to be PINKERTEN -
Robt Little, 50, M, Clerk; Jane, 50, F; Robt, 14, M; Thos, 11, M; Sarah, 8, F; John Pinkerten, 23, M, born in Ireland; Robt, 8/12 (8 months of age, sic), M, born in Ireland.

I checked to see if the 1860 census would contain this family and found the following which convinced me that it was simply an understandable error of transcription due to the confusing nature of the census document, despite the different dwelling and family numbers:

Robert Little in 1860 U. S. Census; 1860; Census Place: Baltimore Ward 4, Baltimore, Maryland; Roll: M653_460; Page: 85; Image: 86; Family included -
Robert Little 60
Jane Little 50
Robert Little 24

I did notify the site about the possible error, and hope this will help some of you also.

Thomas Little 21
Sarah Little 16

Ruth,

Appreciate hearing from you. I have a Hattie Royston, but her parents were John E. Royston and Rachel Low/Lowe. My Hattie (a second cousin twice removed) had only one sibling about whom I am aware, Philip or Phillip Royston born about 1877. Hattie was born about Dec 1879, and married a Walter Gessford? Other than this information, I have very little about them thus far.

I have seen your Shelman or Shalman Royston in my browsing through hundreds of Royston and alternate spelling of surname records! I'll try to pull it up again and see what I can determine from it.

Wish I could be more help, but right now, I'm just not able to do much to assist. I'll keep looking for them though, and do anything I can to assist you. So stay in touch. Please feel free to email me directly also.

Jim in FL

Ruth, I have been following the Royston family in District 5 of Baltimore County. I was able to locate Laura in the 1880 census as Roysten (spelled incorrectly). Coincidentally, the census report shows the location of Beckleysville, MD. There are only 2 pages for this city. The first page has Laura and the second page has Emmanuel Painter.

I am also not sure why Laura has two children with the name of Royston. She is shown in this 1880 census single living with two of her brothers. She has maintained her Royston name in this census.

I have not completely verified it, but I believe that Laura's father is Robert Royston who was born in 1825. I can provide more on this if you are interested.
Re: Robert Royston Family Baltimore, MD 1860

Hi Jim, thank you for answering my query on the Royston Message Board. I really do not know very much about the Roystons. I'm interested in Laura V. Royston born abt. 1854 in MD. She had two children: Shelman H. Royston born abt 1872 and Hattie B. Royston born abt. 1880. I don't know if Laura was married or if these children were born without the parents marrying. Later Laura married Emanuel Painter who was born 10 Nov 1832, the son of Samuel Painter and Elizabeth Bobblits/Baublitz of Baltimore Co. Emanuel was first married to Rebecca ? and they were together for the 1870 and 1880 Census in Baltimore Co.

Emanuel and Laura V. Royston had two daughters, Alta F. Painter born Apr 1888 and Luella born Jun 1891 both in Maryland. For the 1900 Census Emanuel, Laura and the Royston children and the two daughters were living on Falls Rd. Baltimore. After that I draw blanks.

I would like to find what happened to Emanuel's descendants because I'm looking for my Painter gr.gr gr. grandparents. Emanuel's father, Samuel, was the brother to my great great grandmother, Julian Painter who married John Jacob Mollenkopf and migrated to Indiana during the 1830s. So any way you can give me help, or point me in the right direction, would be wonderful. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely Ruth Gaboury

Ruth,

Do you have the parents of this Robert Royston? I have scads of Royston ancestors and have researched the Royston families of Baltimore, Maryland and surrounding areas quite heavily. I think this may be one to whom I'm connected but need more data to be sure.

You can email me directly at jbishop44 at verizon.net

Jim

Robert Royston Family Baltimore, MD 1860

I am looking for information about Robert Royston born abt. 1826 in Maryland, his wife Susan born abt. 1830 and their children; Laura V. born abt. 1854 in Maryland, Charles G. born July 1857, and George E. born Dec 1860. I think Robert died between 1860-1870, because Susan was the head of the household by 1870 Census. On the 1880 Census Laura was the head of the household. I would greatly appreaciate your help. Thank you! Ruth Gaboury

Some Esling folks who were cousins of ours, married into the Royston family in upper New York state. Namely, Pauline Esling married Earl G. Royston. She was in contact with some of our family, but we have lost touch with living cousins in that family.
