Hi Carlota, I do remember my grandmother Ulpiana whose brother was Pedro and they live in Bulacan. My mother passed away three years ago and my curiosity about our family line especially on her side did not die down and yet right now, I am really passionate about finding a way to once and for all resolve my years of curiosity. We are all interested on this, why not start a hunt on where our real line was from. My email is vixx2k@gmail.com hope, this can be the way I had long been looking for. BTW I have an aunty named Carlota before, I am not sure if you are the one...

Victor

Hi there, I had always been curious about my grandmothers' origin as her middle name was Salem originally from Samar. Since she passed away three years ago I had always been desiring to know which lineage was she from considering that she always claims she was a Turkish Jew whose great grandparents transferred to the Philippines. She was an orphan and was separated from her family even before the WW2. Hope someone can help me with this. My email is vixx2k@gmail.com

Looking for info. on WWII vet Sam Salem (sp?) stationed in Ohio

I'm not sure about the correct spelling of the last name, but my mom's birth father was a Sam Salem (possibly from Sicily) who was stationed in the US Army in 1942 in Marion, Ohio. I believe his parents came here from abroad. Around 1942, he dated an Anna Mae Auman from Tiro, Ohio. They had a daughter in June of 1943. I would love to find more info. on Sam if possible. I found someone who could be him through a search, but can't confirm as he passed away in 1981, and I can find no record of a marriage or children. I don't want anything other than to find family history and possible half-siblings for my mom (the daughter born in June of 1943).

I'm also researching about my great gandfather Pedro Salem. My hunch is that great great grandfather was an Arab and one of the moors that came to the Philippines with the Spanish fleet in the 1800s. You can search about the moors. Im sear-
ching for more accurate informations because he has many namesake all over the world including Norway, Brazil, Middle East South and Central America. I really don't have anything to report, but if you have further information please post back. I'd really like to learn more about your mom's info. and our Auntie Julie's info. This is very important since I now have my own child and no one seems to have that information on our ancestry. Bizarre? Yes, I think so.

Salem Name and Spellings

Hi Ouziel, thanks! Indeed Rita got this response from Mr. Ben Nahman for another site: "Source:From the book 'Jews of Valencia' (Valencia Province) Deulosal Salamo lived in the town of Segorbe in 1421. Ysach Calema (pronounced Salema) lived in Morverde, Aragon Province, in 1456." I think the last town should be spelled "Morvedre", which had a Jewish quarter until 1492. Keeping the name spelled the same way for 500 years is significant! I believe "Deulosal" is in the Catalan dialect of Spain. I think Salem is one of the oldest continuously used surnames in the world, but only a guess.

We don't have this. Mr. Adolphe Salem of UK has the biggest database that I know of of Salonika families. I don't know what software he has but probably he can produce GEDCOM. Also he has contributed his database to Beth Hatefutsoth (Douglas Goldman Center) in Tel Aviv, Israel, except for a few new names. I will email your request to him with your email link from this site - if you get CC, it worked.

As most of you know the Sephardim were Jewish people living in Spain until expelled by Ferdinand and Isabella in a holocaust in 1492. Give names of your oldest known Salem relatives to Mr. Adolphe Salem age 91 ( Adolphe Salem ). He has a huge database for Salonika from the pre-immigration days. He may be looking for you! Good luck!

Salem Family

Hi Philip
Your name and the name Habbeb caught my eye. My grandparents, Naser Farris and his wife came to U.S. c.1909 via Ellis Island. Aboard the French Liner, LaLorrain. It is my grandmothers maiden name that I am trying to sort out. But first, they had friends named Habbeb but don't know/remember them. Grandmothers given name was spelled various ways Aneesa/Anisa/Aneese and for some unknown reason it was changed to 'Alice'. Her maiden name was also spelled different ways; Salem, Saleem Saleemy (that's fairly close); Sibaaly/Sybaaly/Sebely and in one place Saleemch. This last one is questionable because it refers to her 'sister'. Unfortunately I do not know the customs or language so I'm at a great disadvantage. I've been corresponding with some cousins in Lebanon and they have tried to help. My grandparents were in Detroit (can't confirm) Ohio and finally settled in Mississippi. Any advice would be appreciated. Hope this isn't to long.
Marie
