In June 1838 Robert and
Isabella Sanders and their young son James, left
Scotland (
Leith) on board the "Catherine
Jamieson" bound for South Australia. They arrived in Port Adelaide on 1 December that same year, but where they went from there I have no idea.
Before they left however, they had friends write in an Album, obviously a book to remind them of their old home. A family named
Gall, wrote in the album, and the son James jnr. also drew a picture of their house, Myrtle Bank, Trinity,
Leith, with his father, James snr. and mother, Ann, at the top; himself, his wife, Mary, and possibly their children, James, Eliza and Annie, at the bottom, with each of his two sisters, Anna and Jessie, at either side. The Galls are my ancestors and I am really keen to find out if that Album might just still exist! A faint hope....... but stranger things have happened!
It is possible that
Isabella Sanders died just a few years later, but Robert returned to
Scotland in 1847, though whether permanently or not I cannot be sure. The son James could well have stayed on in Australia, and I would be interested to hear what happened to him.
If anyone is connected to this family I can give them some anecdotes from my ggg grandfather James
Gall (snr.)'s journals.
