WHEATLAND, Iowa - Gerhardt C. Schaefer, 89, of Wheatland, formerly of Tipton, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Wheatland Manor in Wheatland following an extended illness.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday at the Fry Funeral Home in Tipton. Burial will be at Stanwood Cemetery in Stanwood.
Visitation is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stanwood.
Mr. Schaefer was born March 30, 1912, in Cedar County, the son of Carl and Louise Dorgalo Schaefer.
He attended a country school.
He worked as a farm hand and was a member of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Wilma Straub and Ruth Cornelison, both of Davenport and Dorothy Lovell of Mechanicsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Melvin Schaefer; and a sister, Norma Heinze

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday June 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wilton. Burial will be at a later date. According to his wishes, his body has been donated to University of Iowa's Deeded Body Program.
Visitations are 4-7 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, and one hour prior to services Friday, June 18, at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wilton, or the Lions Club, Durant.
Mr. Schaeffer was born Feb. 18, 1916, in Davenport the son of Louis and Frieda Carstens Schaeffer. He married Sylvia Gebelein on April 20, 1937. She preceded him in death on May 3, 1969. He then married Josephine Hollen on March 13, 1971. She preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1996.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked as a switchman with the Davenport Rock Island & NorthWestern Railway for 39 years, retiring in 1976. After retiring he continued his love for trains through his collection of toy trains.
He was active at his church and other organizations such as, Lions Club, Durant, the Wilton Historical Society, the United Transportation Corp. and Toy Trains Collectors Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lou Hansen and husband, Randy, of Wilton, Sylvia Jean Blummer and husband, John, of Long Grove; a stepdaughter, Nona Jean Upshaw and husband, Ellis, of Ava, Mo.; two sisters, Kay Schmidt and husband, Ernest, of Davenport and Sr. Frances Schaeffer of Dubuque; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
