I'm looking for info on a Anna Schneider born Oct 10 1917 in New York and died in Los Angeles Sept 9 1995.

She was married to Moore Ledford who was a WWII submariner who died on the USS Grunion. I work with the Search for the Grunion Project. We have located the submarine that went missing in 1942 and hope to let all the families of these men know of our discovery. www.ussgrunion.com

Anna is believed to have married a Sanderson.
This is Norbert Robert Schneider. Son of Edward Simon Schneider. Grandson of Norbert P. Schneider. Nephew of Adele Schneider. Father of Cameron, Ryan, and Brianna Schneider. One of your best sources of information for information on the "Schneiders from Germany/Minnesota" would be my brother, Robert Schneider, of Camp Verde, Arizona. He has been researching the family tree for years and has ample information. I understand that there is also a family member in California who has been doing the same. I believe he/she is related to Herman Schneider.

Jackie - I hope you get this message... I was wondering if the Johann Peter Schneider (from Fredericksburg) you're related to is the same one that married Katharina Mueller (widow Reeh) in Fredericksburg in 1863. She would have been his second wife.

I have been trying to find out where they are buried. I found info saying they were buried in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fbg, TX, but as I searched the cemetery the other day, I did not find them. Which leads me to believe they may be buried elsewhere. Do you have any info that might help? Please let me know. Thank you!

Hello, Karen!

This is Evan, again. I have begun to use the websites you've listed, and they look promising.

I haven't find much on the German Schneider side yet, and I haven't seen the name Obermonjou pop up yet...but I found info on the Basgal side of the family that maybe you'll find a link with.

The surname 'Basgal' was a Germanicized form (as early on I suspected) of the French name 'Pasquale.' In the 1700's, an ancestor of mine named Jean-Baptiste Pasquale immigrated from Liege, Belgium to Saratov, Russia, where he married a Russian woman named Stephanida Ivanova. Their son married into a German family and the future generations were Germanicized. By the lifetime of Jean-Baptiste's grandson John Martin Basgal, the surname's orthography had changed. Other family names in this line are Appelhanz, Storck, and Schwartz.

Just an update on new discoveries I've made. If any of these names ring a bell, please contact me.

With a tip of my hat,

Evan

Re: Wisconsin Schneider Mystery

John and Joseph aren't brothers -- Joseph's parents were Johann and Maria; John's were John and Katrina. So were they cousins? Or unrelated men with a coincidental last name?

With my own personal research I on occasion have had incorrect names listed for instance on the Washington State Death Index Records on FamilySearch.com The parent is listed as George Schneider when his name in every other record while in the United States was Joseph H.(Hubert). His birth name was Franz Josef Hubert Schneider.

My point is are you absolutely certain as to the parents names of each. In one case John is the angelicized version of Johann and the area in Germany where my ancestors came from a common name for a German girl was Maria Katharina.

Just something to consider. Also by the 1870's the quantity of Schneider's in many areas of Wisconsin was fairly thick giving credence to your notion it was possibly just a coincidence. Good luck with solving your mystery.

Yes I realized that later in the day. I knew that an Ida Schneider married John jr. but the spelling of the last name I had was without the c. My side of the family descends from Peter who was John jrs. brother. From what I have gathered about John jrs family is his grandson Paul had 3 children in WI then moved to California and remarried and had 3 more children. Good luck in your search and I wish I could have helped you solve the mystery.

Looks like John Daufen Jr. married Ida Schneider, who was the daughter of Phillip and the niece of my ancestor Joseph M. Schneider. So I assume the Joseph listed as a pallbearer at your gggrandfather's funeral was my ggrandfather, Joseph George, who was a dentist in Oshkosh. He had a brother named William.

I'll do a little more digging when I am on my computer at home. I have a site bookmarked (Oshkosh Public Library, I think) that has city directories for the 1800s; the Wisconsin Historical Society also has listings for vital records.

Thanks for contacting me. I guess we're cousins about a hundred time removed!

-- Jackie

I've been doing research on John Daufen my gggrandfather and listed as pallbearers in his obit that took place in 1902 at St. Peters church in Oshkosh is a Joseph Schneider and William Schneider. Reading your post raised some similarities. John Daufen arrived in Washington county WI in 1851 with 3 sisters names unknown from Prussia, I'm currently trying to find the names of the sisters. In the late 1890's John moved to Oshkosh to live with his son John jr. I'm wondering if maybe one of the Schneiders mentioned may be an in-law of some kind. Is the passenger list that you are refering to the Germans to America? I can't find any Daufen's with numerous spellings in the books at all. Well if anything The obit I have place a Joseph and William Schneider in Oshkosh in 1902.

Bernard Otto Schneider Marriage St. Louis, Missouri (1880-1881)

I am looking for assitance in locating a marriage record for Bernard Otto Schneider and Anna Elisabetha Klein. They lived in St. Louis City together according to the June 1, 1880 Census. The head of household was Bernhardt Klein, his daughter Anna Klein, and Otto Schneider was listed as a boarder. Both were listed as single at the time. On Feb 9, 1881, They had their first child named Anna Dorethea Emma Schneider (Emma Schneider) Her Baptism was performed at St. Marcus Evangelical Church in St. Louis, Missouri and their other two children George Otto Schneider and Edward Bernard Schneider were baptised there as well. His wife Anna Klein was baptised there along with all of her brothers and sisters. But, I saw no sign of their marriage record there. Anna Klein's parents Bernhard Klein and Anna Catharina Busch were married at Holy Ghost Evangelical Protestant Church. But, I saw no sign of their marriage record there.
I have searched the marriage index for St. Louis City and County as well as the online Marriage index for the state of Missouri but I didnt find it threr either.

If you have any information on this marriage or any hints on where to find a record of it I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Chris Schneider

Re: Links for Volga German Schneiders

Hi Evan & Julie
Your Schneider family names don't match any of mine (yet), but our Schneiders are also Volga Germans. They were originally from Hanau, Hessen, Germany and moved to Obermonjou, Russia, on the 'Wiesenseite' (meadow side, east) of the Volga, in abt the 1760s. If your Schneiders are from Obermonjou or a village nearby, we may have a connection. I have Obermonjou census information from 1850 & 1857 that I can check for you, if you think it might be. There is also some great history behind the move from Germany to Russia and then on to North America 100+ years later (first Seven Years War, Catherine the Great's 'Second Manifesto', religious/political persecution later).

Here are some other links you might find helpful in your research:
> Ellis Island Port of New York passenger list lookup: http://www.ellisisland.org
Other possible ports of entry for Volga Germans are Baltimore, Galveston, Quebec, Halifax. (Some came through Canada to get to the US.)
> For Canadian passenger lists -> Canadian Genealogy Centre (Library & Archives Canada) http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-908-e.html
> American Historical Society of Germans from Russia: http://www.ahsgr.org
> Germans from Russia: http://www.volgagerman.net;
> Center for Volga German Studies at Concordia University: http://cvgs.cu-portland.edu/index.cfm
> Germans from Russia Heritage Society: http://library.ndsu.edu/grhc/history_culture/maps_villages/i...

Good luck!
Karen
We 'think' that our Schneiders are from Hessen-Kassel because we 'think' that they knew the Sperlings who were also from Hessen-Kassel. Both families were in the shoe business and Philomena Schneider married John Sperling in Pittsburgh. She was born in Pittsburgh but her two older siblings and her parents were born in Germany. The arrived in the US about 1836. John Sperling was from came to the US in 1864. I've attached Philomena's headstone from Woodlawn Cemetery in Wilkinsburg, PA.

Re: It seems right--- Schneider

Dear Julie,

My name is Evan Chiovari, and we are related. I found this out when I was scouring this website for any genealogical breakthroughs in my own research, when I saw your May 17, 2000 post. Yes, 9 years is a long time ago, but I think we could still be of use to each other informationally.

I am 16 years old, and John Schneider and Eva Baskal are also my great-great grandparents. You say you are the great-granddaughter of their 1917-born son Joseph; I am the great-grandson of their (1916?)-born daughter Eva. That makes us...second...third cousins? Fourth?

You say you know little besides what you've posted...well, I know a little more. Eva Baskal was called Gertrude at home (because my grandmother remembers her as "Gertrude"). She and John - indeed Germans from Russia (technically called Volga Germans) - were traveling farmers of - as I remember - beets and cattle and...something else. My great-grandmother Eva Schneider and your great-grandfather Joseph Schneider were indeed the elder children in a large clan, helping their parents plow the fields and raise their siblings instead of (in Eva's case, at least) going to school and graduating. My great-grandma Eva grew up illiterate.

My great-grandma Eva's second daughter, my grandma Lorraine (named after her aunt), was born in Chicago unhealthy...the 'runt of the litter', and was sent up by her parents to her Schneider grandparent's farm in Minnesota (probably the place you forgot they lived before settling) to, quite literally, get 'fattened up'. Here my grandma recalled her grandparents John and Eva, and life there. She recalls her own mother singing a German folk song that Eva Baskal passed down: "Du Liegst Mir Im Herzen" (you can find a Marlene Dietrich version on Youtube).

You mentioned that your mother has the ship and date papers. Do you think you could scan and send me a copy of each of these papers? I've found nothing on Ancestry.com at all, and would love to have such important documents.

I'll try to think of more to tell you, and if you have any questions you can contact me here.

Have a good day!

Sincerely,

Evan Chiovari

I am trying to figure this out, if it's true or not? I have in my files that John's maternal grandmother was Lillian Estelle Fraser (nee Vickery)?

I have that she married Harry Fraser and that Lillian's parents were:

Judson Mathis Vickery [1887-?]
Lillian Estelle Baker [1886-1983]

Do anyone happen to know if this is true or not? If it is true then John Schneider is my 4th cousin 1x removed and I would really like to get in touch with him and ask him some questions, like if he knew his grandmother or great grandparents at all?

Thanks In Advance,
K.Chris Vickery

Elizabeth married Joseph Bennett Hourigan. They had a daughter Margaret Mary who married Francis Xavier Beedenbender.
