Hello there,

My name is John Colwell and I am a direct descendant of Elvira Sexton as well. I have a ton of info if you are interested let me know. The person who you are looking for is Benjamin Tivis Collins. I was guessing also that Elvira and Benjamin may not be married but had no proof. Benjamin Tivis Collins fought in the civil war in the 19th Kentucky Vol's in the infantry.

George Washington Sexton (Collins) did file for a penson for civil war soldiers that had died in the war and left behind minor children. I do have these records and would be happy to share them with you. Although the interesting thing is on the application it shows Elvira as his wife but maybe that was done to excellerate the process. It also showed Elvira as dead which I know is incorrect I have her death record. I look forward to hearing back hopefully we can help each other.

John colwell

I married into the Sexton family and I'm trying to find info on the family to add to his family tree. I am also having a hard time finding info on the Sexton family in Cabell Co. My husband's father was Norman L. Sexton b.May 6,1937 d.Jan.27,1993. His father was Virgil Sexton b.April 10,1905 d.Sept. 1957. His father was, I believe, Henry C. Sexton b.1849 in Va. I have him married to Sarah Fudge b.1875 in Cabell Co. I have Henry's father as John N. Sexton b.Dec. 9,1802 in Greenbrier, Va., and he being married to Louisa Ann Woods b.abt. 1820 d.Dec. 30,1848. I have his father as William Sexton/Saxton and his mother as Elizabeth Black b. abt.1784. They were married April,28,1801. I'd appreciate any info, or corrections to what I already have. Thank You, Crystal Criss-Sexton

There was a Mary Minerva Clark that married a James Robert Sexton, Sr. She was from Missouri Mary Minerva Clark born 1841 and died 1931. James Robert Sexton died young, at age 30 approx., and Mary Minerva remarried a David Watkins.
On the census records you can see where Mary M. Watkins has a child in the household listed as a Stepson, names James R. Sexton, Jr.

I'm trying to connect my grandfather, Jesse "Jess" Sexton to a father & mother. I was thinking his father might be James Robert Sexton, Jr., child of Mary Minerva Clark.
Sharon Sexton Collyge
sharon.collyge@gmail.com
That's all I have on Andrew at the moment.
However, John Henry Sexton is my great grandfather, who is the father of
my grandfather, Sidney Jackson Sexton.
WHOOPS, I'M SORRY. THE SEXTON BRANCH I'M FROM IS GRAYSON COUNTY, VA. MY FATHER WAS BORN IN ENNICE, N.C.,JUST A MILE OR SO OVER THE N.C. STATE LINE. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER NOAH WAS BORN IN INDEPENDENCE, VA. GRANDDAD JOE MARRIED CORA ANDREWS MARCH 5, 1904, IN N.C. THEY LIVED IN GALAX,VA., OR CLOSE BY GALAX, UNTIL ABOUT 1918-20, THEN MOVED TO OXFORD, PA. MY GGRANDMOTHER, MARY ELLEN SHAW, BORN 1838, ORANGE COUNTY, N.C., DIED ABOUT 1880. MY GGRANDFATHER JAMES W. APPARENTLY REMARRIED. HE HAD ABOUT SEVEN CHILDREN BY MARY ELLEN, AND THE OLDEST, POLLY JANE, WAS ONLY ABOUT 14 WHEN HER MOTHER DIED. SHE MARRIED CHRISTOPHER BLAND AT THE AGE OF 16. I HAVEN'T FOUND MUCH INFORMATION FROM THAT POINT ON. MY YOUNGEST BROTHER GARY MET AN OLD INDIAN WOMAN, CHEROKEE, I THINK, IN THE EARLY 60'S WHO WAS A RELATIVE, POSSIBLY A GREAT AUNT, OF MY FATHER, BUT WE'RE NOT SURE. GARY WAS ONLY ABOUT SIX YRS. OLD AT THE TIME, AND UNDER-STANDABLY, DOESN'T REMEMBER MUCH ELSE. IT'S POSSIBLE THAT GRANDDAD JOE AND HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, NOAH, WERE RAISED BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN THEIR FATHER. I HAVE A LINEAGE, WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE ACCURATE. MY GRANDDAD JOE T. (JOSEPH),BORN 1878, HIS FATHER-JAMES W., BORN ABOUT 1847,(WIFE MARY ELLEN SHAW) HIS FATHER-HARDIN, BORN ABOUT 1825,(WIFE ROSAMOND, 1822) HIS FATHER-CHARLES, BORN ABOUT 1794, (WIFE RHODA B., 1797, VA). I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK FURTHER THAN THAT BUT HAVE BEEN UNSUCESSFUL SO FAR. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO FIND OUT WHERE MY GRANDFATHER JOE WAS, BETWEEN 1880,AGE 2, AND MARCH 5,1904, WHEN HE MARRIED MY GRANDMOTHER, CORA BELLE ANDREWS, IN N.C. THIS SEEMS TO BE A MYSTERY. I'LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP HUNTING UNTIL I COME UP WITH SOMETHING. THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE. DICK

Sexton, son of Asa Sexton. I believe all were from Wythe Co., in the Cripple Creek vacinity. Do you know if any of your family came from there? If so,
it could be we may have a connection.
Looking for information on ancestors of Lafayette Sexton(1866-1939, Illinois)I believe they are James Sexton (1841-1891 and Sarah Hicks(1839-1899), both died Illinois. Sarah Hicks, daughter of Henry Hicks and Sarah Renn/Wren from Bath County, Kentucky, had a son Henry Hicks(1857-1938)prior to her marriage to Lafayette Sexton. This Henry remained in Bath County Kentucky living with grandparents and then moved to Roger Mills County, Oklahoma around 1910.
Thanks! Carol

Sorry but now I am confused. How can Charles Jr be born abt 1823 and be the father of Enoch born abt 1815? Perhaps you mis-typed the date or I am confused. Also, I found Phoebe Sexton born abt 1788 in the Russell County 1850 Census. She is listed as being Mulatto is this correct? If I am right at this time if you were not pure white you were considered Mulatto meaning that you could be mixed with African American, Indian, or other. Does anyone know? I know the family rumor was that there was Indian blood in the family from my grandfather's line but I honestly have no clue as to where. Enoch Sexton b. abt 1815 is my 3rd great-grandfather. My grandfather was Acy Ross Vaughn, son of James Cas Vaughn and Nancy "Nannie" Sexton born 1892 and Nancy's father was James Sexton born Nov 3, 1861 (Calvin's twin brother) and then James' father was Enoch Sexton born abt 1815.

Hi Larry,
Sorry, I don't have any info on living descendants. I just know the names of the children of William and Mary Elizabeth - and where William/Mary are buried. I'm sure you have this info? George H., who is only in the 1850 census; Joseph, and Elizabeth.
When I read your query, I looked William and Mary Elizabeth up again in the census records. In one, there was an Edwin Aken living near them; his age would indicate being a brother.
Sorry I couldn't help. Good luck in your search!
Kathleen

My grandfather, Malcum SEXTON, is the son of this Newton. I have found many records that indicate the parents of Newton are Jonathan SEXTON, b.1850 in Letcher Co, KY and mar 4 Jan 1877 to Isabella V. Jones (b. 1851 in Giles Co, VA). Parents of Jonathan are Stephen A. SEXTON b.1826 and Christina Woods b.1826. They were married 1846 in Letcher Co, KY. Stephen's parents are William SEXTON and Rebecah SEXTON and married 7 Jun 1825 in Scott Co, VA.

Stephen B Sexton b. ca 1805 Va, later of Morgan Co Ky

(Query cross-posted to the Morgan Co Kentucky board.)

I am descended from John Sexton (b. 1775 VA, died after 1850 Morgan Co Ky) and Elizabeth Ingram, John being a son of Benjamin Sexton Sr. and Comfort Smith of Bath Co., Ky.

Benjamin Sr. and Comfort had a son Benjamin Jr., who married Nancy Taylor on 22 Aug 1806 in Grayson Co., Virginia, and who was in Montgomery Co., Kentucky by 1810.

Many online family trees (including my own) show the oldest son of Benjamin Sexton Jr. and Nancy Taylor as Stephen B. Sexton, but I now have strong reservations about that attribution, based primarily on the census trail.

The Benjamin Sexton Jr. family appears in Bath Co. in 1820 through 1860, with the early listings being:

1820 census of Bath Co., Ky, p. 206, line 25, lists:
Benjamin Sexton Jr., 2 m < 10, 2 m 10-15, 1 m 26-44, 3 f < 10, 2 f 26-44.

1830 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists on p. 207, line 12:
Benjamin Sexton, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 40-49, 2 females < 5, 1 female 5-9, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 40-49.

1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, east of Slate Creek, lists on p. 63, line 3:
Benjamin Sexton, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 50-59, 2 females 10-14, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 50-59.

Moving on to his reputed son Stephen:

There is no Stephen Sexton or variant spelling listed as a head of household anywhere in the 1830 census of Kentucky (I searched on given name Ste*, any surname, S B, any surname, and on surname Sex*, Sax* and Lex*, any given name, since S is sometimes misread as L), and the 1830 census listing for Benjamin Sexton does not show an adult son.

He first appears in Kentucky in 1840:

1840 census of Bath Co., Ky, east of Slate Creek, lists on p. 83, line 26:
Stephen B. Sexton, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 30-39, 1 female 30-39.

1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #302:
Sexton, Stephen B., 45, Va; Martha, 45, Ky; Isaac, 17, Ind.; William, 8, Ky; Enoch, 5, Ky; Richard, 2, Ky; Ira, 1/12, Ky.

The large gap in age between Isaac and William suggests that Martha may be a second wife.

If the birthplace of Stephen’s son Isaac in Indiana (from the 1850 census) is to be believed, and I see no reason not to, then Stephen may not have arrived in Kentucky until sometime after 1833, whereas the Benjamin Sexton family was in Kentucky by 1809.

Also, the relatively unusual name Enoch does not otherwise appear in the Benjamin Sexton descendants, whereas there are a large number of them in Indiana (including, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, one born about 1795 in North Carolina, one born about 1813 in Virginia, and one born about 1816 in Virginia.) The given name Isaac also appears very frequently in the Indiana Sextons, and not otherwise in the children or grandchildren of Benjamin Sexton Jr. or Sr. These Indiana Sextons, who are clustered in adjacent Sullivan and Greene counties, appear to have stemmed from the same Russell Co., Virginia group that the Carter Co., Ky Sextons are from (and who also arrived in Kentucky in the late 1830's.)

It could be that one or more other researchers simply guessed at placing Stephen B. Sexton in the Benjamin Sexton and Nancy Taylor family, based perhaps on the fact that they were the only two Sexton families in the 1840 census of Bath Co. (although 20 pages apart), and the 1820 census of Bath Co. listed two sons 10-15 for Benjamin, and then everyone else copied it without question. (Including me, until recently.)

Stephen may instead be the following, however:
1830 census of Greene Co., Indiana, lists on p. 16, line 16:
Stephen Sexton, 1 male < 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 20-29, 1 female < 5, 1 female 20-29.

The ages fit well, and no match for the above Stephen Sexton appears in Indiana in 1840 or 1850, suggesting that he moved out of state. (There are a large number of other Sextons in Greene Co., though, so it is possible that he died instead.)

I cannot find a match for anyone from the Stephen B. Sexton of Morgan Co Ky family in 1860 or later except Enoch 1844-1918 (who was living with a Cox family in Morgan Co in 1860, and who is known to be Stephen and Martha’s son from his death certificate), unless Stephen and William are the following:

There is a Stephen Sexton age 55 born in Virginia listed in 1860 in Mercer Co., Missouri, with wife Edny age 59 born S.C. and son William age 21 born in Indiana, who also appears in 1870 in Greene Co., Indiana as Stephen B. Sexon, age 66 born Virginia with wife Edna age 68, born N.C., who does not match any other family (nationwide search) in 1850. So it could be the same person with the birthplace of William entered incorrectly in either 1850 or 1860, but if so, I do not know what happened to Martha, Richard and Ira.

Does anyone have any more clues about whether Stephen B. Sexton really belongs to the Benjamin Sexton Jr and Nancy Taylor family?
