Born in Birkenhead, England in the early 20th, moved to Quebec and later to Ontario (Toronto area?) where she had a child out of wedlock and died in the 40's or 50's. ANY info on my long lost great aunt would be greatly appreciated.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was O'Shaugnessy and she was from Birkenhead, England. Where does your family hail from?

Shaughnessy is a name found in Galway, Ireland. My grandmother and great grandfather were Shaughnessys. My great grandfather came from Ireland before 1860. Sometimes the Irish immigrants misspelled the name Shockency

I am a Shaughnessy by birth. I have found a surprisingly great number of ways the name is spelled. My own greatgrandfather came from Ireland about 1847. I am still trying to find out from where. He was illiterate and many different spellings were used. 2 different spellings were used on his marriage application, Shoughnasy and Shaughnasy. Just by wandering through genealogy sites and immigrant passenger lists and census records, one can find many, many different spellings. Eventually his name became spelled Shaughnessy and am told that is the correct spelling. Good luck in your 'roots' hunt. I'm still trying.........

My Shaughnessy family left Birkenhead about 1883, after my great- grandfather John died in 1882. Like your post they first spent time in Quebec and then moved to Ontario. I wonder? If you have more info. might help-I have lots... Gord Shaughnessy

I have just been reading through all your messages - very interesting. As the Immediate Past President of the O'Shaughnessy Society, I can tell you that one of our members has found over 200 different spellings of our name.

When I stepped down as President last year (2008) the Society presented me with a copy of a Hiberian map of Ireland and the name is spelt O Slechtenes! The family was a big family in Galway, with a Chapel in the Monastic settlement at Kilmacduagh, Fiddaun Castle (in ruins) and Ardamullivan Castle now restored by the Irish Government. These are all in the vicinity of Gort, Co Galway where the next Rally of the Society will be held in September 2010.

There was also a large branch which moved to County Limerick where my ggrandfather William Shaughnessy was born in 1834 near Adare, before he came to Australia. The rest of his family went to the US, but I haven't succeeded in finding them all at this time.

Hope you find this info interesting.

Best wishes,
Megan Shaughnessy McKenzie
