Griffiths Valuation Indices.

The indices for the Griffiths Valuation for the Shaughnessys with spelling variants are available for lookups to members of the (O) Shaughnessy Society. Please be aware that these are indexes only and as much known detail should be supplied ie what area/county. As one can imagine there are many, many James, John etc. etc.
Please remember this is a lookup service for members of the Society ONLY, and I will be running a check before I respond.
It has taken me many hours to put the indexes onto a database, and I have contacted my fellow committee members and we all believe that we should be offering our members some extras. You are of course, most welcome to become a member of the Society, and in do this you will help us to flourish.

Megan McKenzie (Shaughnessy)
Australia.

Hi,

I found the birth certificate of my great-grandmother Charlotte Shaughnessy today, and I learned the whole names and birth locations of her parents - John Joseph Shaughnessy and Maria Cecilia Falvey. J.J., as he was called, was born in Oakville, Ontario in the early 1850's. Maria was born in Moira, Franklin Co., New York in the late 1850's. I'd like to know if anyone can supply information about the Shaughnessys of Oakville.

I am looking for information on Elizabeth O'Shaughnessy, b. between 1882-1888, NY. On 31 Mar 1903, she gave birth to my grandfather Clifford Franklin Begnal, in Utica, per his death certificate. I have written the Archives and Utica Vital Records, nothing found on the birth of Clifford.

It is unknown if Elizabeth married George Felix Begnal, no marriage record has been found. However the same year Clifford was born, George did marry an Edith M. Mitchell, 16 August 1903, Saratoga Springs.

I do not know Elizabeth's parents names....I know when she died and there is no mention of who her parents were, except the last name of her father spelled OShaunessy. She died in 1949, San Francisco, CA

My Begnal-O'Shaughnessy website - www.computer-firstaid.com/begnal_enterprises/genealogy/begna...

Thank you, Doc

My Great-grandmother's name was Charlotte Shaughnessy born on July 16, 1889 in Cedar Rapado Iowa. Her Father was J.J. Shaughnessy (Ontario Canada) and Marie Falvey (New York). She married Aage Edward Rodskiaer (my Great-grandfather) who was born in Velge, Denmark. They had three children. Aage Edward Rodskiaer Jr., Nadine Rodskiaer, and Falvey Francis Rodskier (he had his last name changed). Aage Sr. disappeared when the children were in their toddler years. Charlotte later married Ray Wood. Charlotte passed away shortly after Ray did. Is anyone here related or might think they're related?

Mary Shaughnessy, born 1861 in Ireland, was counted in the 1880 US Census in Kentucky along with her parents Catherine and Michael and siblings John, Honora, Catherine, Michael and Johanna . . . . we have reason to believe that Mary came back to Ireland and married into my family, marrying William Hickey.

Can this be right? Is anyone tied to this family that can help us confirm this?

Thank you!

Shaughnessy(O'Shaughnessy, Shaunessy, Shanessy) family - Charleville, Cork

Looking for others who may have research connections. All were either born or lived in Charleville, Cork at one point.

James O'Shaughnessy (Shaunessy, Shanessy, Shaughnessy) born about 1799; married Catherine Nunan (Noonan) at the RC church in Charleville town in 1828. They had James (1836), John (1840) and William (that I have record of so far).

James married Margaret Galvin at the RC church in Charleville. James and Margaret had William (1861), John (1863), Edward/Edmond (1865), James (1867), Eliza (1869), Patrick (1871), Mary (1872), Michael (1874), Thomas (1876), Joseph (1878), Jeremiah (1880).

Michael stayed in Ireland and married Nora Barrett. Eliza went to England and married a Kennedy. It is believed that at least three of the older sons went to the USA.

Can anyone see any connections? TIA for your reply.
Perhaps this will help someone out there
April 3, 1923 obituary

"The death of Michael Shaughnessy occurred Tuesday at his residence at 31 21st Street in Waterford, NY ( Waterford is separated from Troy by the Hudson River)

He was born in Troy 34 years ago and lived in this city for about 11 years. Until recently he was employed by the United Traction Company. He was a communicant of St Patricks Church.

The survivors include his wife, formerly Miss Corinne McDevitt, his parents, Mr and Mrs Michael Shaughnessy, three brothers - John and David of Troy, NY and Timothy of Worcester, Mass and five sisters, Mrs E J McRedmond, and Mrs T L McGrath of New York City, Mrs James Skelton of Troy, NY, Mrs J E Murnane and Mrs Frederick Wagner of Watervliet.

The funeral will be held tomorrow morning and from the residence and thence from St Patricks Church. Burial will be in St Marys Cemetery in Troy."

Note, the handwritten note stated he lived in Waterford but a separate obituary notice states he lived in Watervliet. Watervliet is separated from Troy by the Hudson River also.
This second obituary notes Michaels parents as : Bridget Dundon and Michael Shaughnessy.

I do not have the name of the newspaper but it is in all likelihood the Troy Record.

James Shaughnessy married Mary McGovern and settled in Waterveliet, New York. From what my relatives have stated James must have already live in or around Waterveliet and Mary had come from Ireland. Another story, a tall one, is that they named a hall after him, Shaughnessy Hall. Possible, but unlikly since I am now sure he was not the only Shaughnessy in the area. Who knows, maybe.

They had the following children: John, Thomas, James who became a priest, Ann who married a Connelly or some derivation there of, Alice Veronica my grandmother, b: November 21, 1898 and d: October 22, 1963 in Schenectady, and Mary.

Alice married Edward George Wallingford and had several children: Edward Francis, Mary Katherine my mother, James, Elizabeth, Alice, John, and Joan.

I do not have any more than all of this.

Thank you if you can provide some assistance.

Timothy (Tim) M.
Edna Shaughnessy was born to John and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Shaughnessy in Troy NY about 1892. John and Elizabeth both died when Edna was young (about 8). She went to live with her grandparents John and Jennie Walsh with her 2 brothers (Edmund and Willard), according to the 1900 census of Troy. They then moved to the Bronx where Edna married a Silver and then an Elsesser. Have lost track of Edna at that point and would really appreciate any info anyone can provide. I am helping an older women do this research and we are at a dead end. Thanks, Maggie

I am looking for information about Myrtle Scanlan Shaughnessy, survivor of the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster, January 28, 1922, Washington, DC. Her husband, Edward H. They were living at the Calvert Apartments in Washington, DC, at the time.

The 1930 census for Washington, DC, shows Myrtle Shaughnessey, age 47, and her daughter, Ruth, age 18. Myrtle was widowed, married at age 27, born in Iowa, her father was born in Ireland and her mother was born in Iowa. She was employed as a clerk for the US Government. Daughter Ruth was born in Illinois.

I am writing a book about the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster and would like to include photos, survivor stories and family accounts of the disaster. If anyone knows of Edward H. Shaughnessy, Myrtle Scanlan Shaughnessy and Ruth Shaughnessy, or their family, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks.

Ruth C. Shaughnessy, b. abt. 1911

I am looking for information about Ruth C. Shaughnessy, daughter of Edward H. Shaughnessy (b. 1883, d. February 2, 1922) and Myrtle Scanlan Shaughnessy (b. 1883).

Ruth was 12 years old in January 1922 when her father, Assistant Postmaster, Col. Edward H. Shaughnessy (age 37) was killed in the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster in Washington, DC. She attended the theater that night with her parents. Both of her arms were broken and her mother was injured as well.

The 1930 census indicates that Ruth was still living with her mother in Washington, DC. She was then 18 years old.

I am researching and writing a book about the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster and would like to learn what happened to Ruth Shaughnessy after the disaster. If anyone knows of Ruth or of her family, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Many thanks.

Debbie K. Chambers

since first posting a message we have discovered a lot about our name. We have found Lawrence and Margaret, Simon and anastasia in WA state. Now I am trying to find out about Simon Samuels father Lawrence who may have died in NE. in 1878 or so and may be the one buried in St. Andrews cemetary. that is what I am trying to determine. I have already had a search done by the Historical Society, and have tried to obtain a death certificate. They werent issued before 1900 and so I hit a dead end. We dont know when the family migrated to the U>S> but have determined they are from Co. Cork. HElp?

We are still searching for gggrandmother Ellen Shaughnessy. We know an approximate time of death, between 1868 and 70. But wae can find no records. Before the census records were all tied up I found Ellen and her husband Lawrence in an 1870 census, living in Middeltwon Logan County. We kknow one son Simon Samuel was naturalized in 1860,in Sangamon County, with the certificate reading Sept. 1860. We also know he and a brother married Kavanagh sisters in Lincoln 1962 and 64. The church that was prominent in what we do know is HolY Family in Lincold. If any one can help we would really apprecite it. We have a lot of family history we would be glad to share.
Darwin David Shaughnessy - Julia Ross

I found Darwin on the 1920 Census for Daisy Precinct of Spokane, WA. He was 15 years old and living with is grandmother Julia Ross (born in England) who was 77 years old at the time. I did not find them on 1930 and I'm assuming that Julia had died by this time. I still have not located Darwin's parents, Thomas Shaughnessy and Dennice Ross both born in Canada. Any and all leads appreciated.

Found Darwin on Social Security Death Index issued by Railroad Board. I know there was a Thomas Shaughnessy associated with the railroad but have found no mention of children for him.
I am searching for information on my paternal (Shaughnessy) ancestry.
My father, Joseph James Shaughnessy, died in 1934, in Scranton PA. Born, Jan/1887
His father was Michael Shaughnessy, married to Cartherine Calpin, (may be Halpin).
His obituary does not clearly define siblings
identifying one sister as Mrs. Louise Elkins of Newark, NJ and another as Mrs. John Clifford of Pittston, PA.
My Baptismal records show a Patrick Shaughnessy as my godfather, whom I believe was my father's brother.
If any of you Shaughnessy researchers can help with any information I would appreciate your posting here or emailing me direct at
jshau@pdq.net
Hi all,

My grandfather was born in 1902 in Canada. He is an Odawa Indian. His family took (was given) the name Shaughnessy by missionaries, and kept it (several spellings of it were used). They also used the surname Chatigney.

Now trying to research roots, but find that records to that point die out..... anyone have anything on Shaughnessys or Chatigney connected to the Odawa Indians of Canada or the US?

If so, please email mwedel@attbi.com
Thanks
Michelle

The subject I listed above is rather redundant but here goes. I am a Shaughnessy by birth. My father, Erard Joseph, was born in Springfield, Il, son of John W. and Margaret F. Shaughnessy. My grandmother was a Mulquin. We have no trouble tracing the Mulquin branch back to Co Limerick with another link to the Quillinans who still live there. My maternal great-grandmother was a Quillinan. The problem comes with the Shaughnessy branch. My great-grandfather was a laborer but we have no clue as to where he came from. They met in Springfield. The Mulquins came to Springfield via St. Louis. The only bit of information I remember is that my grandfather had a brother Richard who was a policeman and who was shot in the line of duty. I was born in Chicago, Il and since leaving there in 1956 have lived in California and now in Washington. As far as I know the family on both sides, Shaughnessy and Mulquin came to this country in the 1850's to 1860's My father was born in 1894 in Springfield, Il. Anyone with any help can reach me at my e-mail adress, obosky@prodigy.net. thanks in advance Julia

decendants of Lousia,Prisalla,Robert,Jas.

Looking for decendents of Lousia Shaughnessy if she married. She went to the U.S.A. I BELIEVE AROUND 1900. She came from Birkenhead-Liverpool England. Also Prisalla's, Robert's and James decendents, who I believe would still be in the Liverpool area. These folks I believe would have died in and about 1920, 30, 40 and maybe even 50. This is a guess from thier ages on an 1881 census in Birkenhead England. Their father was John, who died in 1882, mother Mary and rest of family came to Canada in and around 1884.

Father James W. Shaughnessy & Shaughnessy Hall In Schenectady, NY

I actually need more on Father Jim's parents, James and Mary.

The Knights Of Columbus Hall on Church St. in Schenectady, New York is named for Father James w. Shaughnessy, b: 1896, Watervliet, NY d: 1953. The hall was dedicated on November 21, 1954.

His father's name was also James (O')Shaughnessy and his mother was Mary McGovern.

Mary McGovern had at least one brother, Owen, and a sister, Josephine. Owen and his wife, Johanna McGrath died, young 1917 (+/-) at seperate times, and left three young girls orphaned. Mary McGovern Shaughnessy raised the three girls, Josephine, Mary, and Kate.

Father Jim attended The College Of The Holy Cross from 1912 to 1915 and then St. Joseph's (Dunnwoodie) Semenary in Yonkers New York from 1915 until 1921.

James and Mary had two (2) other sons; John and Thomas, and two (2) daughters; Ann and Alice Veronica b: 1898.

Ann married James B. Connolly and Alice married Edward George Wallingford. James Connolly worked at the Stewart-Warner oven factory and then at Montgomery Wards in Menands.

John and Thomas married; however, I need more information on them.

I also need more information on James and Mary.

James Shaughnessy, Sr., worked for the D & H Railroad at sometime as a Pumpman., filling the trains with water. They lived on Broadway in Watervliet, New York. Alice and Edward George Wallingford lived on Second Ave., and John lived with his wife and two children on Third Ave.

John's wife left him, took the two children and headed home to Rhode Island. Thomas's wife Laura remarried to a boarder named Peter. I do not know if Thomas died or moved out.

It will be greatly appreciated if you can provide any assistance.
