that is great information. when I get near a printer , i will print this out and compare it to my Family Tree. I can tell you that a Jessie Shaughnessy , daughter of a John Shaughnessy from the Troy,NY area married Colin Benjamin Warren from Hampton,NY. I think John Shaughnessy was born abt 1853 ?? John married a Mary Agnes Honey . Not clear what the connection to the Hampton/Granville NY area was.

I have not connected Jessie to my great grandmother Margaret Alice Shaughnessy McLaughlin but would not be surprised if there is a connection. ( my grandmother was Margaret McLaughlin Warren, married to Charles Place Warren of Hampton) . Charles Place Warren was cousin to Collins Benjamin Warren . Coincidence ???? I have not done any digging on this line.

Anne B
annebill79@hotmail.com

Thank you for the scans. I will try to read them very thoroughly when I am not so sleepy. I have just read also your family and nothing jumps out at me at this stage that might connect us. Reading through I wonder whether you have looked at the recent records that are on the LDS site through their Pilot search program. They have a lot of census records there that could perhaps be of use to you. Also Pat Connors site has a huge amount of census data on it for the Troy area - it too could be useful for you. If you don't know these sites then let me know and I will post the addresses for you.

Happy hunting.
Megan.

Just some information on my g-g grandfather. By the way the death certficates were on two who weren't related to my family, they came in error from the state of NY. My g/g grandfather John Shaughnessy enlisted in the NYS Volunteer 7th, I company artillary. John gave his occupation as knitter in 1862,when he enlisted at age 22, John reported he was born around 1840 in Ireland, unknown where. John reports on his military record he was born as John Shaunacy.

In a 1860 city directory of West troy (now watervliet) there are two John Shaughnessys and one James Shaunacy. In 1862 John was probably married, family lore says it was it was a woman with the last name of McDermott. I have spend the last year trying to obtain some documentation of this. John had a son, Maurice Shaughnessy, in 1862. John was discharged from the NYS volunteer after serving in the civil war in June 1865.

John is living in Ontario Canada as atated on the Canadian census in 1871. He is now married for two years to a woman named Jesse Manson(from Scotland). John listed Moses Shaughnessy and Margaret Walsh as his parents on his Canadian Marriage Certificate. Also on the census is George Shaughnessy who about one year or so, but there is no mention of Maurice Shaughnessy on the census. John is working a wool mill in Ontario. He has several more children with Jesse. They are Elizabeth, James, and John W. Shaughnessy.

In 1881 John moves to Cohoes, NY living Adams Island and works in Enterprise knitting mill in Cohoes. He has a several more children with Jesse. John's younger children are Helen, Laura (or Loretta), and Edward Joseph. John is listed in the troy city directory in 1881 as well as Maurice Shaughnessy. Maurice indicates he was borne in NYS on a later census. Maurice does not live with his father, Jesse or his half siblings. John Shaughnessy (the father who was originally from Ireland) takes a job with a knitting mill in Allegany PA in 1906. He has a fatal accident in the mill shortly after starting to work there and is brought back to NY for burial. In his death notice it says that John followed the knitting business for years. He is buried in St Agnes in Menands with a Anne Kelly and Johanna Walsh, who I think may be cousins due to Johanna's last name.

James, one of John's sons married a Helen Sheehan at at St Patrick Church on 1/3/1901 and moves to Philadephia, PA. James, Helen, and their daughter Alma are seen on 1910 census and James also works in a knitting mill. Alma moved back to Troy, NY and in 1930 lives with her mom's sister, Catherine in Troy, with no mention of her parents on the census. George Shaughnessy married a Estelle from Vermont (don't know her maiden name) and works as a foreman in a knitting mill. His address was Oxford road in Albany, NY. He has a son named George J. Shaughnessy Jr born in 1915.George Shaughnessy Sr passes away in 1836.

John W. Shaughnessy's(another of John Shaughnessy's sons) occupation is listed as commercial travel and he moves to Charlotte, NC in 1910.

Maurice Shaughnessy continues to reside in Cohoes, NY is a professional sign painter who married Anna Fredericks in 1888. Maurice served in the Army in WWI but passed away from a combination of lung damage from mustard gas and the flu in 1918. If you have any information on this branch of the Shaughnessys',please let me know, any information is appreciated.

I cant help but think that my McLaughlins are related to your Shaughnessys in Troy/Cohoes area. My Mclaughlins are the sons of Margaret Alice Shaughnessy Mclaughlin. It is possible that she is a sister to your male Shaughnessys in the Troy/Cohoes area. They originally settled in Granville, NY ( near the railroad and worked on the railroad). when the boys grew up, the family moved to Watervliet and Troy and worked on the railroad there. Margaret came to the US circa 1884. I have no record of naturalization nor arrival place.

Thank you for your recent posting. I was most interested in your posting. I can't guarantee they are mine but do you think the originals would/could give me more clues as to whether they may be ggrandfather's brothers or did you post all the information from the certificates? If it is the latter then I say thank you and I will put in my Shaughnessy folder to follow up on, however if you think the former to be the case then I would love a copy (can you scan them?) Thank you again - I will be most interested to hear from you.
Megan Shaughnessy McKenzie.

Hi I'm a Shaughnessy by birth, trying tracing back my family to Ireland through Cohoes and Albany NY. I had asked and received two death certificates from NYS who are not connected to my family line. even though I had given the names and date of deaths, I am reasonable sure these two don't belong to my branch but they may be a relative to some other Shaughnessys. if you think think a copy of these death certificates may help, please send an e-mail and I will email or mail a copy to you, and a happy st paddy's day to all
they are:
Michael Shaughnessy died in Troy Hospital on 12/28/1919 date of birth is listed as 1/15/1862 in troy, NY His parents
are Thomas Shaughnessy and Julia McCummery (or McCommery) both born in Ireland. a Peter shaughnessy is listed as the informant for the info but no relationship is listed to Michael.

The second is John Shaughnessy who died on 5/19 1900 in Watervliet, NY John was 77 years old and was born in Treland. His parent are listed as Patrick and Mary (no maiden name listed ) shaughnessy and both are from Ireland. It is written john was married but no wife's name is given.

The Dunne father was Andrew who was killed in WW1.

I am trying to find out who my grandfathers father was?
I Have just been rereading some of the messages and two things come to me. One was when you picked up the siblings of Mary Shaughnessy you didn't list William. He is my greatgrandfather. You mentioned a photo you posted - I haven't seen it so (a) where can I view it (as I am not a member of Ancestry) and (b) are you prepared to email a copy if I don't already have it. I must say that there are a few photos around although not many, and did I tell you that Mary's greatgrandson has written up the history and genealogy of the Minahans as he knows it.

Happy hunting, and I hope to hear from you.
Megan.

I have just been reading through all your messages - very interesting. As the Immediate Past President of the O'Shaughnessy Society, I can tell you that one of our members has found over 200 different spellings of our name.

When I stepped down as President last year (2008) the Society presented me with a copy of a Hiberian map of Ireland and the name is spelt O Slechtenes! The family was a big family in Galway, with a Chapel in the Monastic settlement at Kilmacduagh, Fiddaun Castle (in ruins) and Ardamullivan Castle now restored by the Irish Government. These are all in the vicinity of Gort, Co Galway where the next Rally of the Society will be held in September 2010.

There was also a large branch which moved to County Limerick where my ggrandfather William Shaughnessy was born in 1834 near Adare, before he came to Australia. The rest of his family went to the US, but I haven't succeeded in finding them all at this time.

Hope you find this info interesting.

Best wishes,
Megan Shaughnessy McKenzie
Mount Gambier, South Australia.

thank you for correcting my error. A very broad question if I may. Have you any suggestions re how I might chase up the John Shaughnessy mentioned in a letter written in 1907? Are there State census for around that time period available online? I am in Australia so it all has to be online, or at least available on film that I can order through the Mormon Church. I would appreciate any suggestions. thanks Megan.

Small correction to the Thomas O'shaughnessy who designed and made the stained glass windows in St. Patricks church in Chicago. HIs name was Thomas Augustine O'Shaughnessy notn in 2870 in Chariton County Missouri and died in 1956. He was a well known artist. His son Joseph died this year.

Thomas A's nephew married a daughter of Ignatius O'shaughnessy, Eileen from Minnesota.

Thomas Augustine also called Gus family came from Chariton and Linn Co Missouri. Originally they they came from the New Hall area in Galway Co, Ireland.

Anyone wanting more information about these Shaughnessy/O'Shaughnessys let me know because I have done a lot of research.

Mary B

I am not sure I can be of any help, but hope you might be able to help me! In a family letter passed to me last year a member says "I went and found John Shaughnessy and we visited old Aunt Ellen". The letter was 1907 and the writer was in Chicago. How on earth am I going to find the right John Shaughnessy I wonder? How great it would be if my John is someone you already know of.

Did you know that the windows in Old St. Pat's Church were designed by Thomas Ignatius O'Shaughnessy. I went to Chicago on my way home to Australia last year just to see his work, and they are magnificent. Met his niece there, namely Mary O'Shaughnessy, and learnt more from her.
She was very generous in giving up her time to come and meet me and show me some sights.

You have the siblings for Mary Shaughnessy correct. William, Mary, Ellen and Mortimer I can vouch were born in Adare Co Limerick as I have their baptismal records the others I can't say for certain. Our family has never recorded an O in front of their name as far back as 1832, however I place no importance on that at all as it has little meaning - some will argue with that. It really basically means the same as Mc or Mac does in Scotland, ie belonging to the family of, or the Sept of. We have recorded (The O'Shaughnessy Society) over 200 spelling variations so I guess one learns to accept all these things as we go along.

A book printed in 2005 by Michael Cowan Walter and Dinah Walter on the genealogy of their family one being Minahan, states that William Burke Minahan son of Rodger and Margaret (Burke) Minaughan was born in InishKea in 1834. He had 4 siblings. Rodger and Margaret were believed to have been married in 1827. Rodger died of pneumonia on March 31, 1882 and Margaret on December 18, 1894. Both are buried in St. Augustine's Catholic Cemetery in Chilton, Wisconsin.

the above information has been taken from the book. If you would like to make contact with the author then could I suggest you contact me privately and I will give you his email address, but I don't think it proper to put it on a newsgroup.

Thanks, and happy hunting.

Megan.

My Shaughnessy/O'Shaughnessy(Mclaughlin) family first settled in Granville, NY to work on the D&H Railroad. Two sons moved to Watervliet ( formerly known as West Troy, NY) in the very early 1900's. I have often thought there was a connection w the Troy Shaughnessys. Have you found where they came from in Ireland ?

Margaret Alice Shaughnessy married Dennis McLaughlin in Ireland . They arrived in US some time after April of 1883. Their third child, first born in US, born 1886.

Because you made this Post in 2001, I am very hopeful you still have same address. Anne Baldwin

I got the siblings from your post, so I believe I have them all: Ellen, Tom, Patrick, James, John, and Murt "Mortimer."

Are you saying they are all from Adare, County Limerick, Ireland? That may give me a clue as to where to look for WIlliam Burke Minaghan's birth place. Some records I've seen say Northern Ireland, North InishKea Islands, County Mayo. Is Limerick anywhere near there? I know in a 1981 family document it mentions that the Minahan's in Green Bay had an Island in Green Bay that they called InishKea, so I'm sure that is where their roots are from.

When was the "O" added? It is spelled that way in the photo I posted. Seem unusual they would add the "O" rather than drop it.

Thanks for your help.

Kris / Pulaski WI

I read an old posting today regarding the above submit. My maiden name is Gibson and Patrick Frank Gibson, my gg grandfather married Mary M. O'Shaughnessy at St. Aloysuis Catholic Church in Yoder (Sheeldon) on August 26, 1879. Mary's parents are listed in the church records as William and Barbara O'Shaughnessy. I have hit a brick wall and was wondering if you might have any information on the O'Shaughnessy's that might be of help to me. I am also told that some of the O'shaughnessy's lived in Monroeville, Indiana. Any information you might be able to to share would be helpful. Thanks

I am curious to know if we are searching for the same person. I'm also curious if after all these years - you have discovered any information about Maureen Shaughnessy. I posted something on here in 2001 - and forgot all about the post - somehow. Ha! Regardless, I don't mean to take up your time - I'm just very curious - as I have found nothing.
I was born on 04/19/1975 to a Maureen Shaughnessy. I was adopted through the Cradle Society in Evanston, IL. ANYTHING you know would be VERY helpful. Thank you.

Michael O'Boyle

Hi
my fathers grandfather John Shaughnessy was born in Galway 1826 and his grandmother Bridget Carlin in Mayo in 1831, they left Ireland and moved to England either individually or together (unknown), then married in the midlands in 1856.

I have no other real details about them as yet, apart from the possibility that Bridget may have had a brother by the name of Hugh or Byran (inconsistent info from different sources). I have no other info regarding John Shaughnessy however, I am working on that one....

best wishes

Patrick's wife's name was Mary Ann and they had two sons, Bernard and Michael. His mother, Jane Mary Meehan was born approx 1808, I believe and father, Michael, born approx 1805, in Ireland. Try Arthur Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. 1851 Canadian Census for Wellington County is interesting.

I think the Patrick Shaughnessy you're looking for is my great Uncle. Father Michael Shaughnessy, Mother Jane Mary Meehan. My records have the same birth year. Please visit Shaughnessy Family Tree. Patrick homesteaded in the Missoula valley for a time, along with his brother, John A., and my grandfather, Thomas W. I'm a novice at this computer program, but will try to set you up so you can visit my tree. Good Luck, Terry
