Seeking information on Marquis Shaw who was born in Vermont about 1796 and comes to La Porte County, Indiana in 1830/40. His children are: Alluna, Almer, Renesslear, Edwin R., and possibly a Daniel. I believe he had a sister Catherine A or S Shaw who married Jonathan R Joyner in Vermont. Is their father Rufus who shows up in La Porte too?

William Shaw and Mary McGee Greenock m. 1816 but need help!

I've been tracing my male father's line from Fleetwood, through Barrow in Furness to Greenock.

I have a James Shaw, boat builder who married a Mary Ann Middleton in 1889.
His father was William Shaw b. 1821 who married Catherine Sinclair in Greenock Old & West on 27 May 1844.
His father was William Shaw a mariner who married Mary McGee (also McGhee) on 10 Jun 1816 in Greenock (Old & West). I have his marriage certificate but it doesn't give me his age.

Here I'm stuck, they had 4 children (that I know of) Martha c. 1816 Sep 30, James c. 1819 Jan 10, William b. 1821 Oct 28, and Joseph c. 1824 Aug 16.

My problem is figuring out William's dob and then his parents. I've not been able to find his or his wife Mary's death certificate (indicating they died before 1855) and I've not found either of them on the 1851 census. I've looked at the 1841 Greenock Middle census from FreeCen but it's incomplete, as the Greenock Old & West are not on yet and I've had no joy.

I have 8 William Shaw's born in Greenock that could fit the bill and I have some that follow the Scottish naming convention which narrows it down but I really need to find some record of his age.

So to anyone with access to a complete 1841 Greenock Census I would be very greatful for any assistance.

I am searching for information concerning Henry S. Shaw, who was born ca. 1826 in Mansfield, MA., s/o Isaac S. Shaw and Nancy Richardson. Nancy Richardson was born in 1803 in Mansfield, MA. Both were of Mansfield or West Mansfield, MA. Isaac S. Shaw died before the 1850 census, when his widow was living in Mansfield, MA. with her children. I am trying to find more information concerning this Shaw line going further back in time. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Jean Mayo.

William Joseph Shaw of Yorkshire, England

I'm trying to find the family line of William Joseph Shaw (b1876) & Ellen "Nellie" Hobson (b1876). Their oldest child was Beatrice Dorothy Vernon Shaw (b1899) & the last known address was in Wath Upon Dearne. In 1897, their witnesses to their marriage were Beatrice Mary Shaw (1879), Joseph's sister & William Robert Unwin (possibly a cousin to the Shaw family).

Joseph's father is listed as William Charles Shaw, occupation: contractor.
Kathy

Parents of Francis Shaw and Hannah Leighton m. abt 1845 Northumberland

Looking for any information on the family of Francis Shaw who married Hannah Leighton about 1845, in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Their children were: John, abt 1846; James, abt 1848; Sarah, abt 1851; Thomas, abt 1853; Mary, abt 1857; and Francis, abt 1859. Another son, William, born 1839, seems to have been Hannah's son, but probably not Francis's.

Francis was born County Down, Ireland, about 1813. According to census records, he was a miner, road labourer, and agricultural labourer. He seems to have come to England with a John Shaw, who was possibly his younger brother.

Francis and Hannah's son Thomas married Mary Ann Carrigan, daughter of Thomas Carrigan, 2 March 1878, in Alnwick, Northumberland. Mary Ann was said to have been born in Northumberland, but her parents were both born in Ireland. Thomas and Mary Ann had seven children: William John, 1879; Annie, 1882; Francis, 1884; Thomas, 1885; James Carrigan, 1887; Lewis, 1890; and Mary Ellen, 1894. Thomas and Mary Ann came to Canada in 1909, with all but the oldest two children. Thomas died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 1912; Mary Ann in 1914.

William was already married, to Jane Cornish, and had three kids. They also moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia, where his parents were, the year after the rest of the family. Annie is said to have been married and lived in Washington, USA, but this is all we know. Thomas married Mary Maria Keaist. Mary Ellen married Fredrick Killeen. Lewis was unmarried when he died in a mine explosion in 1915. Francis remained unmarried.

James Carrigan Shaw married Phylbina Koehn in about 1919. They also had seven children: Louis Frank, Helen, Robert, Daniel, Doris, Fredrick, and Julia.

Thomas Carrigan's wife is thought to have been named Wynn, but I don't have a first name for her. They also had at least one other child, besides Mary Ann: a son named Michael. Aged 39, he lived with his sister at the time of the 1891 Northumberland census, but that's all I know about him.

I would be grateful for any information on the parents siblings of Francis Shaw, Hannah Leighton, and Thomas Carrigan--or anything else about this family. I would be equally delighted to learn anything of the brothers and sisters of Mary Ann Carrigan and Thomas Shaw. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Peter Hitt m Mary Shaw VA abt 1770; Moved to SC

Peter Hitt and Mary Shaw are my ancestors. Peter was born in Fauquier Co., VA in 1742 and died in Laurens Co., SC in 1806. Mary Shaw b unknown d Laurens Co., SC in 1806.
Some of their children were born in VA before they moved to SC. I am looking for Mary Shaw's statistics, her siblings and her ancestors. My present knowledge of her is enough to ensure that she was a colonial (pre-revolutionary) American. One of my genealogical goals is to prove that every one of my ancestors living in 1776 was in America at that time. I am also interested in the earliest roots of all my ancestral lines.

Please help me through this forum or e-mail me at hudsonpw@ev1.net

- Philip Hudson
SHAW family of Granville, Nova Scotia

My current genealogical interest is in documenting my maternal great grandmother's SHAW family history. Susan Shaw[1842-1917] was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia to Isaiah Shaw [1798-1874] and his second wife, Sarah Lyons.
Isaiah Shaw was the first child born to David Shaw [1770-1840] and his wife, Desire/Desiah Phinney.
David Shaw's parents, Captain Moses Shaw [1735 - 1821] and Ann Phinney, were married 1762 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, and came to Granville Township (near Bridgetown) Nova Scotia about 1760, after the expulsion of the Acadians.
The father of Captain Moses Shaw, also called Moses Shaw [1704 -1792] was said to have been a United Empire Loyalist, and may have been the Moses Shaw who received a land grant in what is now St John, New Brunswick in 1784.
The Shaw family goes back to John Shaw, who emigrated to Plymouth Colony from England between 1623-26.
I would like to correspond with anyone who is interested in the same family.
Doris Gates Thorpe of Dartmouth, N.S.

I am searching for possible descendants of Ellen Barry. She married Robert Warburton Shaw in Liverpool in 1911. They had three children - Robert P, Noreen M and Lawrence D Shaw. Robert and Ellen moved to Leamington Spa ca 1913. Robert was badly gassed at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 and died in Warwickshire in 1920 of the effects of his injuries. I think Ellen may have returned to Ireland, where her father John was born. The Shaws lost touch with Ellen and her children. Any information gratefully received.

I am looking for information on Forrest Shaw. I know that he was in the army in approx 1942-1944 stationed in N Africa and Italy (that I know of at least). His wife was named Dora, maiden name unknown at this time. I do know that she was a teacher and she lived in Stony Ridge, OH during WWII and that his mother Anna lived in Pemberville, OH. If I have done my research correctly; I have found Forrest's middle initial to be E and his brithdate to be 7/22/1918 and also that he died on 3/25/1993. That is all that I can find so far. I had come across a large number of V-mail letters from Dora to Forrest and want to try to find them and/or thier family. There are many names in the letters so, please feel free to ask. Any help is appreciated!
Jennifer

Lucy Shaw, Matthew Irving

Hello,

I am looking for information on Lucy Shaw, my great great grandmother. The only biographical information I have on her is that she married Matthew Irving sometime around 1880. Thier son, Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving (1880- 1917), who was born in Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland, married Emilie (Emily, Emile?) Butterworth (1883- 1914) on 8 Nov 1906 in Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada.

The only other information I can provide is that Matthew (Lucy's husband) was previously married to Jane Dickson, and had five children by her- Margaret Dalgliesh, Mary Jane, William, Janet Dickson and Elizabeth- all surnamed Irving. The first four children were born in Ruthwell, Dumfries, Scotland, and Elizabeth was born in Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland.

I am interested in finding out any biographical information I can on Lucy Shaw, as well as information on her parentage. If someone could provide some leads, I'd be most grateful.

Thank you,

David Lee Irving (perfessordave@hotmail.com)

Greetings,

I'm descended from Thomas Shaw of Philadelphia (born in England 1857, emigrated 1880). Thomas Shaw Married Ann D. in 1883 and had two daughters: Lucy (Jul 1888) and Clara (May 1887). Ann D. died in 1901. In 1904, Thomas remarried to Miriam Rowley on 23 Jun 1904 and had my Grandmother, Ethel Shaw in 1907. Does anyone have any connections to Lucy or Clara?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Jesse LeGrande Shaw

I am hopeful that you can point me in the right direction in an attempt to obtain information… I am embarking on a major endeavor to trace family/descendants. My name is Christie Shaw and my Father was the late Jesse LeGrande Shaw and my Aunt the late Bessie Bottoms were born to Pearlie Shaw Bottoms and Sol bottoms in 1924; at least Bessie was (born in 1924).

My grandmother Pearlie Shaw Bottoms and Sol Bottoms were Orangeburg, SC residents in 1924. I am trying to learn of their history. It may be obvious that they landed South by way of slave trading and the last name Shaw may have been that of those that owned them during the slavery era.

It is my hope to learn as much of them as I can so that I have history to pass down to my grandson who's now carrying my father's name… Jesse LeGrande Shaw. It's even our hope to find how/why the name LeGrande was given to my father. But all of this can be discovered if I just get on the right track to finding more about who my grandparents were.

I'm looking for any information available on my ancestor Egbert Shaw. At the 1880 census he was living in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY, with his son John B. Shaw. The census record says that he was 82 years old and that he and his parents were born in NY.

From other sources I've learned that he may have been born in Dutchess Co., NY. His wife's name was Laura Beebe, about whom I know virtually nothing. She doesn't appear in the 1880 census record, so it seems likely that she had already passed away.

Egbert and Laura had 2 sons that I know of: John B., born in Saratoga Co. in 1833, and Amander A., from whom I'm descended, born in Kingsbury on Oct 2, 1840. Both sons served in the Civil War, John in the 5th Vermont Infantry, Amander in the 11th Vermont Infantry/1st Vermont Heavy Artillery.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Dave Shaw
daveshaw@bellsouth.net

Mary Jane (Foster)Shaw / Jelly

Was married 1st to Simeon Henry Shaw. They had one daughter, Laura Alice Shaw, born FEB-29-1868 at Fort Harker, (now Kanopolis), Ellsworth County, Kansas. They divorced.

She later married Sam Jelly (Jelley) and had one son Thomas.

Mary died MAY-17-1934 at Lincoln, Lincoln County, Kansas and is buried in the city cemetery.

In 1868, Mary was attacked by indians. The rather graphic clipping is below, along with her obituary;

Janesville Gazette
Janesville, Wisconsin
Tuesday Evening
August 18, 1868

VERY LATEST NEWS
BY TE:EGRAPH
===============
FROM ELLSWORTH
-------
St. Louis, August 18, -- A letter dated Ellsworth, Kansas, of the 14th, says that on Monday, the 12th, some two hundred Indians appeared on Spillman creek, about 10 miles (closer to 30) northeast of Ellsworth. Arriving at the house of Mr. Shaw they caught him and beat him unmercifully, and drove him away. The devils then caught Mrs. Shaw and her sister [Sarah Alice] and violated their persons. Some three hundred or more of them continued to abuse these helpless women til long after they had become senseless, and then destroyed the property and left them for dead. They then proceeded to the residence of Mr. Bacon, beat him in the same way, and violated the person of his wife, leaving her in very critical condition. It is feared that the women subjected to these outrages will not recover.

They met and abused several other citizens by beating them. After destroying all within reach they left for the north. These poor women say that for a space of six hours they were subjected to ill treatment and they showed marks of the most cruel usage, made by being beaten in attempts to defend themselves. A detachment of soldiers were sent after the Indians from Fort Harker, accompanied by fifty or sixty settlers. On Wednesday night they sent for reinforcements and on Thursday a full company under command of Col, Benteen had come on Indians who had 10 or fifteen women surrounded in a house and he had driven the redskins away but whether killed any or not was not known. Those are probably some who have been murdering and committing other outrages on Solomon Creek.
***************************
Lincoln Sentinel-Republican
Lincoln, Kansas
May 24, 1934

Mary Jelly

Mary Jelly was born April 21, 1845, in Lucerne County, Pa., died in Lincoln, Kan., May 17, 1934. Age 88 years, 26 days.

Mrs. Jelly came to this country 69 years ago, settling in Saline County on a homestead 2½ miles east of Tescott, with a colony of early settlers few of whom are still living.

In 1869 [wrong 187_] she was married to Sam L. Jelly, then County Clerk of Ellsworth County. Later she moved to Beverly where she lived for 19 years, after which she moved to Lincoln where she has since made her home with her son.

She leaves to mourn her departure her son, Thomas L., and a daughter, Mrs. Alice Gorum of Chicago; 12 grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Methodist church in Lincoln. She attended whenever she could and always enjoyed the services.

She died a child of God, testifying of her readiness to go. Her lot was anything but easy here and we feel that she will enjoy the Home over there for which she longed in her later days on earth.

Funeral services were conducted form the Methodist church with Rev. Roy D. Plott in charge Sunday, May 20. Burial in Lincoln Cemetery.

I'm looking for information on Bryant Shaw, born 1809 in Jackson or Clarke County, Ga. He married Lucretia Willingham on October 16, 1834 in Walton County, Ga. He had around nine children. In 1860, his family lived in Milton County, Ga. From 1870-until his death, he lived in Jackson County, Ga.

My great-great grandfather James Shaw is his son. James was born in 1847. James married Sarah Long of Jackson County, Ga in 1868. Both James and Sarah are burried in Jackson County, Georgia.

Any information on Shaws in these areas would be appreciated.

Brian Shaw
bmsga@yahoo.com
