Jean, This is the "family story" on our Sheckles line. Wilson Sheckles b OH ap 1840 married a Sarah Lucile Wilson b ap 1840 assume married before 1865 when their daughter, Anna Gene was born in IA on Aug 30 1865. The family moved from IA to OH after the birth of Anna. They must have moved again or Anna ran away from home as she was married in St. Louis MO to a John H. Goddard on Sept 5 1881. The lived in MO, KY, TN shortly and moved to IA where their children were born. After 1888 when their last child was born they moved to WA. I can prove the WA life but have not been able to prove much else. All census state the same info on birth places as is stated in the family story. A side note in the family history "cousin to President... Wilson? Thanks Beth

We have a Wilson Sheckles born in OH ap 1840 (age guess from da birth of 1865) He married a Sarah Lucile Wilson and moved to IA where their daughter Anna Gene was born in 1865. They returned to OH a few years after daughter was born. Anna was married in 1881 in MO to a John H. Goddard, a Methodist minister. I have not been able to prove any of this this is "family story" besides the fact that he was a Methodist minister. Any clues among you Sheckles? Thanks Beth/Wayne

Delilah, just checking on a slim link. Does your Bryant research connect with Sheckles? Possibly in CA? I am trying to help a friend find her Sheckles ancestry. She has a Kate or katherine Bryant marrying a Sheckles in 1865 in CA. First name unknown. Children of this marriage: Daughter Lulu on 17 Dec 1866 and son Fred Powell 16 Sept 1870. Mr. Sheckles the father ran off on the family in 1876 and Kate Sheckles married James D. Gray and Fred Powell changed his name from Sheckles to Gray. Can you help on this or refer me to someone who might be able to help? Thanks, you can reach me at altheap@wyoming.com, and my friend thanks you also. Althea

Re: Thomas Sheckles Family ~ VA, KY, ILL Info Wanted!!!!

I have a connection with this Thomas Sheckles Family!!!!!!!!!

My line comes through Elizabeth Sheckles, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Sheckles. Elizabeth marries Benjamin T. Harrison in New Diggings, LaFayette Co, WI-15 May 1848. I follow Benjamin & Elizabeth (age 21) through the 1850 census in Madison Co. IL where Julia Shekels (age 14)is living with them. In 1860 census Madison Co. IL, Joseph Shickles (age 21) is living with Charles and Julia Belk. Joseph Sheckles serves with the Co. D, 117Reg't Illinois Infantry from 19 Sept 1862 - 5 Aug 1865. No further information about Joseph.

My Eliazbeth (Sheckles) Harrison is listed in the 1860 census with Benjamin and three children: William (11), Mary (4) and Robert (2mo.) This is the last record I have of Elizabeth Sheckles.....Benjamin marries Dolly Simes in Morgan Co. IL on 13 Oct 1861. They move to Labette Co, Kansas with the two boys and leave Mary Harrison behind with the Denton family of Madison Co. IL. Mary (Harrison) King is my great grandmother

What has happened to Elizabeth (Sheckles) Harrison? I have not found a death or divorce record for her in Madison or Morgan Co. My trail has been cold for awhile. I would love any information anyone might have on this line.

Please contact me at adamekp@presys.com

I agree with your theory up to a point. Abraham and Rebecca Coy Sheckles remained in Crawford Co. IN. In 1850 census Abraham was 71 and was born in MD. Rebecca was 61 and born in KY. Looks like your Abram was from another branch of the MD family.

I am a direct descendant of John and Sarah Coy Sheckels. They remained in Crawford Co.
as did their son Silas who died there in 1878. Their son, John and his wife Zeruiah Bullock moved on to Mercer Co. IL and then on to Minden, Kearney NB. Their son William, my grandfather, went west to Kitsap Co. WA. in 1900.

I have run into a dead end with my ggg-grandmother Nancy Ann Sheckles. I have information from my great aunts that she was born in Kentucky. Her parents were Sheckles and Brennon. She married William/Bill Brown. They lived in Missouri for a time. He left for California, established a store in Sacramento. When established he went back to Missouri for his family. On the way back to Sacramento Bill Brown was killed along the Platt River. Nancy arrived in Sacramento and later married my ggg-grandfather Chester Swift.
If any one has any information, I would greatly appreciate it, and be happy to share information.
I am looking for decendants and information on this line.
Thomas Sheckles is listed (According to Sons of the American Revolution papers as the father of Julia Ann Sheckles who lived in Abemarle, VA, and supposedly moved to KY when she was two years of age and later to Alton, ILL. I have a possible mother or grandmother, Ellen Johnson Sheckles, for Julia (Who was b 1836) and her siblings were Rebecca, Margaret, Mary, Elizabeth and Joseph.
The following is an exerpt from memoires written by a dau of Julia's, Eva Adelaide Belk:
"One of the earliest memories of Julia Sheckles Belk (My Mother) was the tale of her mother (Ellen Johnson Sheckles) who had seen George Washington often ride past the door on his white horse. Without having the early authentic dates, this item is slightly confusting, and it might have been her grandmother, but we know it happened, and will give some idea as to how far back our line can be traced."

I have no further information on father Thomas.
Thanks!
