Gov Isaac Shelby is my husband's ancestor. Johnnie and I are working together on a book for Capt John Shelby, born 1723 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales. Married 1st to ?; 2nd to Sarah Davis.

I live in Charleston, MO, about 45 minutes from Paducah, KY. I am not directly descended from Isaac, but from Rees, Evan, Jacob, John Bondurant, Isaam Clay, George U., and George U. JR. I don't know any KY Shelby's, but I do have a link to General Joe Shelby, who was originally from KY. He was my 3rd cousin, twice removed (I think).

Okay if I jump in here? Melanie Duvall (sttaxl@tir.com) has done a lot of Mississippi Co, MO research. She's a desc of Mary Elizabeth SHELBY and Bryant "Bry" HUMPHREYS of this county.
Mary (1818-1818) was the daughter of Wiley SHELBY and Mary E BROWN, also of this county.

Gov Isaac Shelby's youngest brother, (Capt) Moses SHELBY, was in New Madrid Co, MO.

Who were Mary Belle Shelby Kelley's parents? East Prairie, MO is only ten miles away. I know the Shelbys from East Prairie, I have not been able to find their connection to me. I know that Moses Shelby came to the area before my ancestor (Jacob would be my first ancestor to arrive here, I think). I think that the East Prairie Shelbys are descended from Moses, but I have not proven that. I am descended from Rees, who is Moses' brother. My grandfather was George U. Shelby, SR., his father was Isaam Clay Shelby. I hope this helps.

Clay, I think we may have Shelby's in common. My husbands grandmother was Mary Belle Shelby Kelley who lived in E Prairie for awhile in the early 1900's. I would like to compare information with you.

Judy, thank you so very much for the information. Yes, I was led to believe that our Jonathan Shelby (my great-great grandfather) was a descendant of Gen. Joe Shelby by family lore, etc. Guess that was wishful(?) thinking. I am definitely going to check out the book! My mom is going to love to hear that we will be able to trace back our history! I can't wait to tell her! If you have Cora and Alfred's children, you have my grandfather, Eulis Adron Graven. He married Velma Austin and had two children, James (Jim) Austin Graven and Sherry Graven. Jim has four children, Jason Graven, Kevin Graven, Melissa Graven, and Michelle Graven by his second wife, Connie. My mom, Sherry, married Rex Swanson and has two children, Kelly Baldwin and myself, Amy Pierson. If you would like any further information, let me know! I am so excited! Your Jonathan Shelby was born 9 Dec 1904 in Hartville, Wright Co, MO. He married 3 Jul 1856 to EMILY Baker (19 Mar 1839 KY-13 Jun 1917 MO) Buried in Dutch Chapel Cemetery, Wright Co, MO.
Jonathan and EMILY had 7 children, Your Cora, born 22 Nov 1880 in Wright Co, was their youngest child.

Jonathan is not connected to Gen Joe..Which is what may have been throwing off your research..

Jonathan was the son of Evan Shelby and Mary Ann Curtis.

Evan Shelby was son of Rees Shelby and Catherine Orr of Edwards Co, IL

Suggest you contact my friend- Johnnie M Johnson (PeaPicker2@aol.com) has published a 500 + pages book on Rees and Mary Shelby and their Descendants, that carries your line from this Rees [from Wales]down to naming the children of Cora and Alfred.
This book, now in its 2nd printing, has to carry a hefty tag of $55.00 [includes p&h] but worth absolutely every penny! It is well documented with maps, photo's of the original documents, etc..

Any updating or information on what you have would be appreciated...We are still updating this Rees book..

I know that my family is also related to Gen. Joe Shelby, but do not know how. My great,great grandfather was Jonathan Shelby and was of some relation to him, but I can't find any information on who Jonathan's parents were or how he was related to Gen. Shelby. Might any of you have encountered any information regarding Jonathan Shelby. He married Elizabeth Baker and fathered Cora Elizabeth Shelby who married Joseph Alfred Graven. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you related to the Shelby's who run the Funeral Home in East Prairie? Ted Shelby, who was the Funeral Home Owner, buried my Grandparents, Clarence and Mamie Herron. Mamie in 1948 and Clarence "Curley" in 1976.
