Amy - this is your cousin Jason. I have the Shelby - Baker Family Reunion Book. Jonathan Shelby was born in Illinois December 9th, 1837. Someone here posted that he was born in Hartville, MO, which is incorrect. Jonathan fought in the Civil war in the Union Army (Eighth Missouri Cavalary Regiment). Jonathan served in the Battle of Wilson's Creek and the Battle of Neosho. He was also at Cedar Creek when General Sheridan made his famous ride.

Anyone needing further info can contact me.

Jason

Amy, this is your cousin Jason. I have a copy of the Shelby - Baker Family Reunion Book from 1958. It reads:

"Jonathan Shelby, son of Ivan and Mary Shelby, was born in Illinois, December 9, 1837. At an early age the family moved to near St. Louis, MO. While living here his grandmother died and was burined in St. Louis. When he was nine years old, the family moved to Texas County, Missouri near the present site of Roubidoux."

Hope this helps you as well as others...

Jason

Then she married Henry Seng. I have their marriage certificate. Henry was born in Germany, but Dolly was born in Indiana.

Hi kenr91,
Rees (born in Wales) is my 6th great-grandfather, all on my paternal side. I talked to your grandmother, Johnnie, several times two years ago, she was excited to find someone with a paternal link. I also sent her some pics of General Jo Shelby's grave, when I visited my brother in Kansas City...she said General Jo was her favorite Shelby. :) Would you consider letting me borrow a copy of her Rees & Mary Shelby book - just till I could read the whole thing?? I discovered it at the DAR library one hour before they closed on the last day of my trip there two years ago...didn't know whether to laugh or cry! I would gladly pay the postage - I know it is a humongous book. Please let me know. (I would have responded sooner, but I've been traveling.) Thanks, Susan
I noticed that you said that you were kin to General Jo Shelby. On June 27 and 28 2009 we will dedicate a park and a life sized statue of General Jo on his horse. General Jo claimed Waverly as his home for thirty years. We also will be having a Shelby Reunion for the dedication on Sat noon. So far we have 14 registered for the reunion and meal. If you would like to attend send me a head count and names so we can prepare enough food. We have Shelbys from Washington, New Mexico, Texas and Missouri so far. Please contact me if you are interested in more information.

Are there any Shelby's in Hardin, TN that can check this out.
Cemetery records on line indicate burials at New Harmony Cemetery, Hardin, TN

Cora A. Shelby b. 18 Jun 1886 d. 27 Mar 1908
Sarah B. Shelby b. 13 Jul 1886 d.14 May 1894

It lists both as daughters of C.M. And L.A. Shelby, but being a woman, I can't figure out how you can have a child and then the next month later have another. I feel this is probably a transcription error, but without being able to see the stone - I just don't know. I have a copy of the court record for the estate settlement for Joshua Shelby, deceased. All of his known issue were mentioned in the document(s); there was no mention of an Abraham Shelby in any of them.

I have not done any research with respect to your other questions and have no record of Joshua's daughter, Jemima, having married more than twice.

John G Shelby death

Does anyone have any further information [such as parents etc.] on this Shelby. I believe the "Kittie" referred to in the obit is the daughter of Alfred and Martha Calvert Shelby. The daughter it refers to must be the 8 yr. old Martha on the 1910 census living with Alfred and Martha Shelby.
Houston Daily Post
Tuesday Morning, June 3, 1902

JOHN G. SHELBY DROWNED
Was Fishing In The Guadalupe
Near Seguin.

Foot Slipped or He Was Taken with a
Cramp--Body Recovered, But Efforts
At Resuscitation Were Futile

Seguin Texas, June 2-- John G. Shelby, aged 38 years was drowned in the Guadalupe river about half a mile of the court house in Sequin at 5 o’clock this afternoon. His body was recovered about a half hour after he went down in the water.
He, in company with his father-in-law, Mr. Alfred Shelby, were fishing at the time of the deplorable accident and John was standing in swift water about waist deep when either his footing slipped or he was taken with a cramp. Though Mr. Shelby saw him when he went under, he was unable to help him. The alarm was immediately given and a large crowd from town rushed to the scene of the accident. His body was recovered in less than a half hour, but life was extinct and efforts of physicians to resuscitate the body were without avail. John Shelby was a popular drummer, a member of the Travelers’ Protective Association, and for years resided in and traveled out of San Antonio. About a year and a half ago he was married to Miss Kittie Shelby of this city, who with a daughter six months old survive him. He was a native of Mississippi and came to Texas several years ago..
Hi,
My name is John T. Shelby. My family tree is pretty vague. Legend has it that my grandfather, Johnnie Shelby, died 1962 I believe, was the father of 3 Martha, Jimmie, and Larry. They are from the Cleveland,County area of SE Arkansas. None of which really have memories of where their father was from or any of his geneology. My sister has done some research and believes that Johnnie Shelby was born on an Indian Reservation and was a half-breed,I have no idea if that is true. I heard one time that he was in WWII. I have also heard that he was a bootlegger in the 20's, in Tennessee. He was married to Clara, who I believe was a Slaughter, from Mo., and legend has it was related to Jesse James. So according to all the different legends and rumours, which could all be fictional, I am related to Isaac Shelby, Jesse James, and Johnny Cash. Does anyone know anything that could be helpful?

I have found the names of the parents of Emma Sisk. Her given name as found in census data was actually Emmaline. Her parents were Daniel Sisk and Cinderella (maiden surname unknown). Her siblings were: Flora, Harley, "Genie" a female, and Kenny, a male. See the1880 Federal Census for Kent Township,Warren County, Indiana; page 5, line no. 23.
