Hi,
Your offer is very generous. I have a roadblock I'm trying to get
through, over, under, or around.:-)

I'm looking for the parents of Mary Alice "Mollie" SIMMONS b.August 17, 1873 Randolph Co. WV. d. June 11, 1963 Randolph Co. WV married James Grant BUCHANAN on March 23, 1892 also in Randolph Co. WV.

I think she is the dau of Jonas I. Simmons b.September 14, 1847 d. June 02, 1916 and Mary L. "Polly" WOLFE.

I have what must be the largest collection of Simmons info in the country and will be glad to share anything I have to help in your research if you will let me know who you are working on. The only requirement is that you be willing to share what you have with others.

The only thing I can find on your James Monroe Simmons is a sheet from the Mormon records showing the following:
James Monroe Simmons married to Lutitia or Chee-A-Nun Lilly with only one child listed: Malinda Jane Simmons born 1 15 1863 in Porum, Muskogee, OK. You mentioned James had a son, Lewis. When was he born and to which wife? You also mentioned Lewis testified that his father's name was Bane.
Where did he testify to this and why?
You may be able to get more on James from a Mormon research center since someone turned in info to them on this family.

Dear Esta: I can tell you who I believe your Henry Simmons was. From circumstancial evedence, it appears he was the Henry Simmons who was the son of a William Simmons and wife, Patience. This William was a brother to one of my husband's Simmons ancestors. This William was in Wilkes County, GA. He deeded property to his children so I have their names plus other documentation on them. Now among his children was a Henry, Asa and a John and Simmons by all three of these names show up in Lafayette Miss. In the 1850 census is an A.(Asa) Simmons born about 1790 in GA,
a John Simmons born 1787 in NC (the family was from NC before moving to GA) and your Henry born 1791 in GA. Furthermore, I believe your Henry first married Suzzy (Susie)Gonad 1 17 1813 in Putnam County, GA. The following could be his 2nd marriage: Henry Simmons married Eliza (Elizabeth) Jones 5 19 1831 in Richmond County, GA.
As you can imagine, I cannot prove all this positively but I believe there is a good chance that this is the correct family. It will take a lot of work to prove it but I believe it can be done.
I have an abstract of the Bible record for William Simmons and his wife, Winnie Artilla Graham. They had 9 children according to this record.
The record shows he was born 3 27 1833 and Winnie was born 2 16 1826. They married 2 24 1857. The record has his name as W. H. D. Simmons.
If you want a copy of all this, EMail me your address. I will send you family sheets showing where I believe your Henry fits along with a copy of the Bible record.

Thanks Peggy: I got this information from his son Lewis D. Simmons testimony when he applied to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, dated Oct 1909. It contained considerable information on his family but hardly anything of his father, mostly information on his mother's side of the family.

Richard,

I am sorry I have not responded to you earlier. No, I don't have anything for you on Polly, but we just moved to New Hampshire this year and I am still trying to find the best places for research here. A local library has some old books that I am going to be looking in for you. I am first trying to find an old map of NH from 1780 and 1800 with the old towns on it that you have listed.

Please don't give up hope, I am trying for you. My 3 year old is getting to know the town libraries real well.
I will keep you updated on what I have done. Again I am sorry I did not respond sooner to let you know that I was trying.

If you possibly could let me know some of the resources that you have checked so that we don't duplicate our research efforts.

Till later,
Gayle

I do not have proof of this but I suspect your Arthur Hollis Simmons was the son of a James Marion Simmons born 5 29 1828 in Ga and wife Frances Hollis born 5 25 1832 in Ga.
The only child I have listed for this couple is Edgar Gassaway Simmons born 6 18 1852 in Ga. This Edgar married a Lucy Hollis. Edgar died 12 3 1889 in Americus Ga.
I do not have all the Ga census records but it appears this James Marion Simmons might be the one listed as James M. Simmons page 980 on the 1860 Terrell County, Ga census so you should be able to check this out by the census record.
Please let me know what you find out. Peggy Hill
