Jeanes-Squire - two names entwined!
I have been researching into my mother-in-law's family and their connection to the Squire family...
Richard Jeanes was born Robert Richard Squire in 1852, the son of Richard Squire (1810) and Sarah Jeanes (nee Boobyer - possibly, the widow of Arthur Jeanes).
As a consequence of this union there is a real confusion over the Squire and Jeanes names in the Census (1861-1901).... Some of the Jeanes children are adopting the name Squire (and some disapearing off to Wales) and the only "legitimate" Squire finally adopting the name Jeanes... As do his children, because that is how they are registered...
1) I would dearly like to see if you have any information that would shed any light on the Squire and Boobyer link...
2) Anyone with information relating to ths swapping of surnames in the census would be gratefully received...
What a tangled web they wove!
Thank you in anticipation
