Squire from Devon - supplemental

I have just visited Weare Giffard and barnstable library and discovered that all my grandfather's siblings bar one were born in Weare Giffard, John Henry being the only one not and he was born in Bideford.
I also discovered that their parents Thomas and Ann both came from a village called Frithelstock just a few miles away. They apparently settled in Weare Giffard sometime between 1883 and 1886. Look forward to any further information.

Harry Squire worked for Canadian Pacific Railways post 1901

I am looking for a brother of my grandfather. He was born in Devon around 1865 and left Wales for Canada. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railways, most especially on the Connaught Tunnel. He was known as Harry Squire but could be either of two brothers who both left at the same time - William Henry Squire or George Henry Squire - sons of William Squire & Harriet, lived South Wales, late of Frithelstock in Devon, England. I know one went to Canada and one to South Africa to work on the railways there. My problem is I don't know which brother went where. If you can help at all, I would be most grateful. Many thanks - Suzanne

Jeanes-Squire - two names entwined!

I have been researching into my mother-in-law's family and their connection to the Squire family...
Richard Jeanes was born Robert Richard Squire in 1852, the son of Richard Squire (1810) and Sarah Jeanes (nee Boobyer - possibly, the widow of Arthur Jeanes).
As a consequence of this union there is a real confusion over the Squire and Jeanes names in the Census (1861-1901).... Some of the Jeanes children are adopting the name Squire (and some disapearing off to Wales) and the only "legitimate" Squire finally adopting the name Jeanes... As do his children, because that is how they are registered...
1) I would dearly like to see if you have any information that would shed any light on the Squire and Boobyer link...
2) Anyone with information relating to ths swapping of surnames in the census would be gratefully received...
What a tangled web they wove!
Thank you in anticipation

David Farrell
Squires named Jesse and Eunice in Cornwall, CT, and Hillsdale, NY

Jesse Squire, born 1760, probably Hillsdale, NY, and sister, Eunice, born 1762. Jesse's children named his father as Asa Squire, but a firm identity has never been established. Have Jesse's pension record and family bible. Daughter Eunice married James Budd in Claverack in 1817 and is my ggrandmother.

I think there must be a connection with the Jesse/Eunice of Cornwall, perhaps through a brother, Asa, who would be the father of my Jesse. Have found both Jesse Squire and John Clothier as grantees in 1762 in Jericho--later Hancock--MA, presumably the start of their westward moves.

A further clue is the rather interesting entry of John Hanassa Squire in the Squire bible. This bible was written in very polished script some years after the fact--ie, by someone else at the family's behest. My surmise is that the writer didn't quite catch "Jonathan Asa" and thus put it down as John Hanassa (who actually was always called John).

Would like to hear of any interest in this mystery, in return for which I can supply further details.

My great great grandmother was Jeanette Squire, born 24 Oct 1815, Branford, New Haven, Connecticut; died 4 Mar 1894, Batavia, Genesee, New York. Her parents were Orrin Datus Squire (1783-1859) and Annice Frisbie (1784-1859); paternal grandparents were David Squire and Huldah Bishop. She married Dr Jacob Osmyn Loomis (1802-1894) on 1 Jan 1836. She had a large number of siblings: Lewis Lysander (1807-?), Emerance (1808-?), Lyman Luzerne (1809-1869), Elvira (1811-?), John Newton (1813-?), Horatio Nelson (1817-?), Charlotte Ann (1819-?), Caroline (1821-?), Henry Bishop (1823-1826), Orrin Datus (1825-?), Sarah F (1827-?), Annice (1829-?), Ellen M (1832-?). I'd like to hear from anyone connected to this branch of the Squire family.

...from The Oklahoman Newspaper archives in Oklahoma City, OK, dated:

01-10-1902
p.5/8

A REVOLTING CRIME

Man Murdered Skinned and Hung On a Wire Fence

The following horrible crime is reported by the Claremore
Messenger of last Saturday:

Wiley Littlehead and Willie Littlehead, fullblood Euchee Indians
and brothers, are awaiting a hearing before Commissioner
Jennings on the charge of murder committed at Mounds,
Christmas. The reported details of the crime make it the
most atrocious crime ever committed by anybody but a cannibal.
The two Littleheads, together with a number of others of the
tribe were enjoying a drunken carcuse, when for no cause yet
apparent, the Littlehead boys decided that one Candy Squire
should be killed. They immediately started in to execute the
thought and with clubs beat their victim to death by inches.
After life was extinct, the two fiends, so it is stated, absolutely
skinned him as they would a deer and hung the body on a wire
fence.

Other members of the tribe captured the murderers and took
them to Mounds, where they were given into the custody of
Deputy Fought of Sapulpa, who took them to Claremore Saturday
evening.

***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation***

Alice Squire (Squyre), wife of William Sayre

Many years ago when I was working on my Sayre and related families, all I found for William Sayre Sr.'s wife is that she was Alice Squire - no other information except that she died 11 Jun 1567 in Hinwich, Bedfords, England. Now that I am doing internet research I find some bits and pieces of information on an Alice Squire, but there are so many discrepancies in the dates (or iffy dates, like "abt") I do not know what to believe. Has anyone been able to do good solid English research on the Squire family? Who is her father and mother? Have we all hit a dead-end with the Squires/Squyres family?

Found this in a portion of a letter my father wrote to his girlfriend while he was serving in WWII. He does not give specifics as to where the tombstone was located but he was possibly stationed at or near Goxhill, England at the time.

John Albert Squire, Age 10
Died 27th of October year 1809

Pause here and think: a monitory rhyme
Demands one moment of thy fleeting time.
Consult life's silent clock, Thy bounding vein:
Seems if to say, "Health here has long to reign."
Hast thou the vigour of thy youth? an eye
That beams delight? an heart intaught to sigh?
Yet fear--youth oft times healthful and at ease
Anticipates a day it never sees;
And many a tomb like Albert Squire's aloud
Exlaims, "Prepare thee for an early shroud."

Looking for recent family information on Burton M. Squire from Seattle WA, born February 19, 1924. Second Lieutenant Squire was a Co-Pilot on a C-47 Skytrain in World War Two. On September 17th 1944 his transport plane (number 42-16049 piloted by Lt Norman A. Baldwin) crashed in Holland. Squire was the only one of four fellow crewmembers who survived. He became a Prisoner Of War (POW) but returned safely. After the war he lived in Washington. He died probably May 14, 1999 in Mukilteo WA. Would like to get in touch with his family of today, to share some information and photos. The veterans of his squadron are interested as well. How can I find out his. Where are his siblings today. Thanks for helping. Bart Smeets in The Netherlands. BartSmeets1@hotmail.com. * * *

I am searching for information regarding Sebastion Squire of Northampton County NC who lived in the early 1800s in the area of present day Gaston and Garysburg. He married a Lucy Garner in 1813 and apparently a Mariah Garner in 1823. Children by these mariages were William, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Sally Squire but I do not know at this point how they were distributed. These children inherited from their Grandfather Rev William Garner in 1825.

Information regarding these people would be appreciated.

Regards,

C E Garner
My husband's grandfather Simon Squire, had a son named Levi Squire. He was born in Pike Co, Mo, 17 Sept 1884. Simon Squire moved to OK, around 1900. Levi was around 17, and did not go with him and his new wife (Melinda House). I can not seem to find any trace of Levi, after 1890, Mo., census. Any help would be great. The rest of the family with his new wife, (melinda) I have records of. The family hints that Simon & Levi were both in love with Melinda. She was Levi's age.

I am looking for any info on Fanny Squire. I have a marriage cert for her stating that she married william john davis on 2 jan 1911 in st marys, dorchester, england. She was at that time 32 and living in cornwall lodge, damners lane, dorchester.
Her fathers name was george edward squire. Shortly after her marriage she moved to East Moen , Hampshire where she had two sons, victor and leslie. Both boys certs state that mother maiden name was squire. I have looked through the census for 1881, 1891 and 1901 but cant find her anywhere with a father of the right name.I am told she came from the south of england but i have checked right accross as this isnt a fact im sure of. Also scoured through 1837.com to find a birth but cant find one that tallys. I know she died between 1956 and 1967 but cant find a death for her either. I think i have checked all the possible spellings of squire and still found nothing. Surely her family cant have missed three census's? Can anyone give me any help or does anyone have any idea where else i might look?
regards
christine
There was a marriage connection with the Gault family and, through the Gaults, connection with the Ringling Brothers (of circus fame).

John E/Cora Squire, Topeka Ks, 1904-1910 & Eliza Brotherton

Looking for anyone with info on a John E Squire, living at 1021 Brooks Ave, Topeka around 1905, and was still there in 1907, but was gone by 1910

In his home was living an ELIZA BROTHERTON, my gggrandmother, who previously had lived in Labette CO, city of Chetopa KS in 1900. Eliza was a widow and in 1900 was living with her also-widowed daughter Cora, age 23, and Cora's 1 year old Dau, GLADYS H BASSETT - Cora Brotherton had married a Mr. Bassett, though we don't know his first name.

We believe that CORA remarried this JOHN E SQUIRE, and that Eliza moved in with them, therefore moving up to Topeka. We found a document showing Eliza living at 1021 Brooks Ave,in 1904 - and a CORA SQUIRE had signed the document as a witness, so we are pretty sure this CORA is the widowed daughter of Eliza Brotherton, CORA BROTHERTON BASSETT, and so Mr. Squires would be her 2nd husband.

in 1907 the city directory for Topeka showed Mr. Squire being the asst. mgr of the MAJESTIC THEATER in Topeka, but by 1910 they are no longer listed at the Brooks Ave address, and we know Eliza in 1910 had moved to WI to live with her daughter IDA BROTHERTON BRAITHWAITE> would love to know what happened to Cora, John E Squire & family.

Would love to connect with those who are related to this line or anyone with information. Thanks for listening, SUE

New Squire(s) web page seeks contributions

I’ve created a web page dedicated to all the interesting information found while researching Ephraim Hiram Squire and his descendants and am looking for your contributions. Some family tree web sites only concern themselves with names, dates, and references. I intend for this web page to be a place for researchers to share stories, photos, research struggles and antidotes pertaining to this branch of our family tree. We've all had our share of fun and frustration when it comes to tracing Ephraim H. and his descendants! We've even found a skeleton or two! The web page can be found at http://www.squiresearch.com/ All contributions are welcomed! Deanna@squiresearch.com
