I am looking for more information on Alex Stafford and Hettie Ann Graves. They were married in Loudon County, TN on 7/1/1906 and it appears Hettie Ann died in 1918. I'm looking for any descendants of this couple. Hettie Ann was my great-grandfather's sister and I have little information on her and her family. It appears she died in Anthony, KS. Anyone with information regarding this family, please contact me directly at blpurdy@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!

Invitation to Join the Stafford Society

The Stafford Society was incorporated as a nonprofit genealogical research and educational corporation in the State of Washington in December 2005. We are a 501(c) 3 Federal tax exempt organization and welcome tax deductable donations.

The Stafford surname is probably derived from families living in Staffordshire England. In Europe, surnames began to be used in the 12th century, but it took several centuries before the majority of Europeans had one. The International Genealogical Index lumps Stafford, Sanford, Safford and Stanford under the surname Stauffer. No link to any of the Noble Staffords has been proven with satisfactory documentation. The direct male lines in that branch have gone extinct more than twice with the husbands of Stafford daughters taking the name and titles. The matriarchal lines continue to this day.

The Stafford Society’s mission is to assist all Stafford researchers on a share and share alike basis in researching all Stafford branches and to provide a single repository of all information made available to us. Send whatever information you have on your earliest known male (or female) direct Stafford ancestor, their spouses and children, and we will respond. Contact me at president@staffordsociety.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Our on-line genealogical data is restricted to members as we strive to develop an accurate single version of the facts. Our membership fee of $15 a year sustains the Society.

To date, we have identified 129 Stafford Branches. As proof becomes available, related Branches are merged into a single Branch. For example, Branch 8 has been merged to Branch 4, and Branches 57 & 71 have been merged to Branch 13.

Male Y-DNA testing has found 7 distinct Stafford lineages sharing multiple branches. These branches will remain separate in our database until paper connections are found to enable us to merge the connected branches into one. Additionally 16 other Stafford lines have been Y DNA tested that do not match any other lines in our database so far. This bears out our understanding that the Stafford surname is not one single lineage descended from a common ancestor but is a group of lineages based around a geographical location. Visit the Research Section for more details.
Many researchers spend large amounts of time collecting data: birth certificates, photos, GED-COM files, etc. What happens when your files or photos are lost or damaged? What happens when the "family" genealogist passes on and there is no one immediately interested in taking on that role given the burden of sorting through all of the files, certificates and other items that has accumulated over many years? Often, these resources are packed up and either put away where it is forgotten, or much worse, sent to the dump. What a shame that all of this history is lost.

In today's society we seem to think that anything in print or on the web is gospel truth. In fact, a lot of the information is inaccurate, or incomplete. All information needs to be verified, checked and sourced against the best data available. Only then, can all Stafford families be assured of their full and accurate heritage. The Stafford Society is here to collect and document all information on all persons who are part of the Stafford family. We are constantly striving to find connections between the various Stafford lines and combine them into the smallest number of branches. We will use DNA evidence whenever possible to verify the connections we have made and to establish new connections between Stafford branches.

We invite you to join the Stafford Society and sustain the exciting research that we are undertaking. There are many opportunities to participate in the Society. Membership dues are $15.00 per year, US funds. Membership is January 1 to December 31. Payments received from October to December are also applied to the following year’s membership.

Michael H. Stafford, President

The Stafford Society
Ronald Lee Stafford 1911-2008

STAFFORD, Ronald Lee Jan. 27, 1911 - July 12, 2008 A Godly Man of Great Character! A Wonderful Son and Brother. A Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather! Ronald began life in North Carolina, one of 12 children of Claude and Matilda Stafford. He married Pansy Louise McKinney on May 12, 1933. They relocated to West Virginia where he began working in the coal mines, moving up the chain of management to Foreman. Ron and Louise have one child, Margaret Alene Stafford Webb, born September 11, 1934. Margaret married Lewis McKinney Webb on August 15, 1953. Ron and Louise fell in love with Lewis as much as their daughter did. He was truly the son of their heart. The young couple moved to California to begin their lives together. It wasn't long before Ron and Louise followed the young couple west, and moved to California. At this time Ron began work in the Aerospace industry and continued until his retirement. He was a man of many passions. His commitment to the Lord was number one. His Bible was well read, often quoted, and never far from his side. His family was his first priority. He would rather be with his family, than with any one else on earth. Good humored, easy to laugh, great story/joke teller, the man everyone loved. True golf enthusiast! He got more pleasure out of playing a round of golf than should have been legal. It was a joy just to hear him tell about the time he shot his lowest score! Boy, did he love the beauty of the North Carolina Mountains. He could talk about the color of the foliage in the fall or the wild flowers in the spring and describe it in a way the picture was painted on your mind forever. At 97 years of age, Ronald, lovingly known as Papaw to his grandchildren, had lived a beautiful life but no one was prepared to let go of such an extraordinary man. When his time on earth came to an end--as a testament to his faithfulness to the Lord--while he was sleeping, it was as if the Lord just took him in his arms and he was gone. Ronald is survived by his wife, Pansy Louise Stafford; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Lewis Webb; grandchildren, Karen and Jeff Armour, Laura and Lewis Webb III, Jeremy Lee Webb; great-grandchildren, Amy Anne Armour, Chasen Armour, Cortland Armour, Mallory Webb, Sarah Webb, McKenzie Webb, Madison Webb; brothers, Charles Stafford and Lace Stafford. Today he is in Paradise! A Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at O'Connor Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Pkwy., Laguna Hills, CA. Private interment. O'Connor Mortuary, Directors www.oconnormortuary.com
Published in the Los Angeles Times on 7/15/2008

Nehemiah Stafford

I've recently begun looking into my Stafford family connection and find that our Nehemiah b. 1793 in Monongalia appears to be the son of James (& the questionable Lucretia) Stafford. I've read with interest the discussion about documentation and wonder where the will that was proved can be found. How much information does it hold? Does the gravemarker at the Brooks Farm not provide solid enough evidence that James and Lucretia were married? Or perhaps it just means that we don't know Lucretia's maiden name, and Reins might not be it?

How do the North Carolina folks fit into the mix? Are they part of the same family?

I do have a quite a bit of info on Nehemiah's descendants. He seems to get very little "press time" compared to some of the other siblings, and would be happy to share anything that others may want.

I have a mystery and hope someone can solve it. In a newspaper (Rockford Register Republic, 02 Sept 1865) is a listings of marriages in Rockford. It says: " Mack, Charles G. to Stafford, Mrs. Clarissa Ann, both of the town of Winnebago, July 22, in this city...." However: when I try to find this couple on the 1870 census I do not find them. I do find Charles on two census for that year, however, first in Geauga County, Ohio living with his daughter Caroline (Mack) Hathaway, and later that same year, in Winnebago, Winnebago, Illinois, living with a son John C. Mack.
This would have been a 2nd marriage for Charles (and probably for Clarissa); did they divorce or did she die ?

If anyone who is related to these families and have some Stafford family legends concerning Martha "Ann" Dearman who later married Thomas Passman, I really need your help. Passman relatives say family legends are that Martha Ann was orphaned as a minor. An aunt, who was a Stafford, and lived in Washington Parish, LA took her in. Ann Passman's relatives established her maiden name was Dearman, but haven't been able to connect her to her parents.

I am trying find the connection between Martha Ann Dearman, d/o Harris Dearman(killed in Civil War) and Eliza Jane Creel, and Martha Ann Dearman who later married Thomas Passman. I know these three families are closely related and the events in Ann Passman's life and Martha Ann Dearman's life are very similar.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to find my Stafford line. I have found there are many lines and it is very hard to pin point mine. Here's a list of names and if you see anyone that might match up with what you. Please contact me.

Henry Stafford b: 1836
Julia (Beaver) Stafford b: 1841
Levi or Lewis Stafford B: 1874
Harry E. Stafford B: 1879
Gerttie/Gertrude Stafford B: 1881
Samuel Stafford B: 1885
Willsie Stafford B: 1888
Garry Stafford B; 1826/ I have found him in the census with Henry listed as blind. I think he's a brother or a close family friend. I say that because I find him in the 1860 census with Noah Stafford B: 1796 and Sarah Stafford B: 1801 (I think they are Henry's parents). I find a Jere White listed as blind and is right about the right age.

Thomas Stafford B:1837

I will add more later I have many more but need to take my son to a class now.

Lorene

HENRY HITT

HENRY HITT, farmer, P. O. McLane, was born at Peru, Clinton Co., N. Y., Feb. 9, 1817; a son of Stephen and Phebe (Stafford) Hitt, who located at McKean's Corners, Erie Co., in 1831, but, after nine months, came to this township, living three years on the farm now owned by Homer Compton, which they subsequently sold. Then, after a residence of five years on the property now occupied by Lee Ensign, moved to Granville, Ohio. Henry, our subject, was united in marriage Nov. 1, 1841, with Rosa, daughter of Aaron and Polly Sisson, of Otsego Co., N. Y. Three children blessed this union -- Fanny, wife of Alenon Harrison, and the mother of six children -- Blanche, Mary, Susan, Frank, Henry D. and an infant; Florence, wife of a Mr. Crandall, of McKean Township, had two children -- Lynn and Henry N. -- and departed this life, aged twenty-eight; and Frank F., who died aged seven years. Henry Hitt and his brother Heman are the only members of the father's family now residing in this county. He has lived on his present farm since 1838; he served as Postmaster of McLane about twenty years; he is, politically, a Republican.
HENRY C. STAFFORD,

HENRY C. STAFFORD, Collector U. S. Customs, Port of Erie, was born in Waterford Township, Jan. 29, 1842. He was brought up on his father's farm and received the benefits of the tuition at the Waterford Academy. Healthy, patriotic and enthusiastic, he promptly responded to the country's call for volunteers to suppress the rebellion, and at twenty years of age he enlisted in the 83d P. V. I., which was quickly dispatched to the front and quickly brought to battle with the foe. At the second battle of Bull Run, Aug. 30, 1862, between sunrise and sunset, our subject received five gunshot wounds, the last perforating his left lung. He was left prostrate on the field, and so remained unattended for three days and nights. He fell into the hands of the enemy, but was immediately paroled on the field, and carried to Alexandria. He remained for a while in the hospital there, afterward being removed to Washington City. He bore the pains of his slowly healing wounds with much fortitude. Jan. 29, 1863, he received his discharge from the army and returned home; his avoirdupois at this time, including his ordinary wearing apparel, was just eighty pounds. He recuperated in health, and served until near the close of the war in the Provost Marshal's office at Waterford. The war ended, he returned to him farm; subsequently became Constable, Tax Collector, deputy Sheriff, and Warden of Erie County Prison, and, by election in 1879, High Sheriff, and July, 1883, was appointed by the General Government Collector of the Port at Erie, which position he now holds. Mr. S. was married, Jan. 5, 1865, to Miss Effie R. Judson, daughter of P. P. Judson, Esq., of Waterford, Penn. To this union have been born seven children, five of whom survive: Febie E., Peter P., William C., Margaretha M. and James Garfield. Mr. S. is fond of home and family, and while a positive character, is popular in his manners, and has hosts of warm friends throughout the county.

JOHN , married, Nov. 19, 1865, to Helen, daughter of Nathan Stafford,

JOHN C. VEIT, farmer, P. O. He was married, Nov. 19, 1865,
to Helen, daughter of Nathan Stafford, who settled in what is now Summit Township in 1823. The issue of this marriage was 3 children -- Della, Travers and Roy. The Staffords were among the early settlers of McKean and Summit Townships; they were enterprising citizens, and did much to improve the county in its early settlement. Nathan had 6 children -- George W., Montgomery, Nancy, Mary J., Helen and Alice. He died in Summit in 1881, at the age of seventy-five. John C. Veit, our subject, was in the late war, enlisting Aug. 11, 1862; was in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the campaign of the Wilderness and Petersburg. At the latter he was taken prisoner, and confined in Andersonville and Florence Prisons 9 months. He was then exchanged, and rejoined his regiment near Washington, D. C., and was honorably discharged in June, 1865.
