STEEL/STEELE originating in the UK

My Grandfather was Robert Tayler STEEL, born Aug 16 1892, in Croydon, Surrey. His Father was William Lloyd Tayler STEEL, born Oct 14 1857, in Greenwich, Kent.

Most of the messages on the STEEL/STEEL Message Boards are relevant to the US. Is any researcher involved in STEEL/STEELE family history in the UK?

I have not hit a brick wall. It's a mountain!!

I recently found the book "Steele a gathering of the clan" (published in 1981) and would like to share the contents with others. I am not related to this family or researching the name. The book appears to be well-indexed and I'm happy to do look ups for those interested.

Regards,

Sue sug53@earthlink.net

The Jacob Steele (son of James Steele and Catherine Greenbury) who married Rosanna DeVilbiss (daughter of Adam DeVilbiss and Catherine Barrick) 1802 MD has been said to have come from Ireland, but without any documentation. Rosanna's grandmother was Anna Catharina Stuhl (wife of George DeVilbiss). Anna's father was the German immigrant Adam Stull. Is it possible that Jacob Steele is descended from the same Stuhl/Stull family and that these are all just different spellings of the same name?

Isaac Steel/Steele Sr and wife Jane Barr

I am helping my cousins with filling out their applications to join the DAR. Their patriot is Isaac Steel/Steele Sr. born bet. 1758-1763. He died 14 Oct 1842 and is buried in the Steel-Gutherie Cemetery, Perry Township, Armstrong Co. PA. His wife was Jane Barr, born about 1773. She died 4 Jan 1844. She is buried next to Isaac. There is a Revolutionary War flag marker at his grave, with an American Flag. It is not a DAR marker. I need help in finding proof of his military service. I don’t know when he served. I did find a transcription, Armstrong County Applicants Annuities from the state between 1812 and 1844, as veterans of the Revolutionary War. There is an Isaac Steele listed, but I can’t proof this is their Isaac. There were other Isaac’s. Also for proof it cannot be something that was transcribed. I did not have this trouble with my own patriot, as I found a lot of proof, but for Isaac I have run into a brick wall. I have tried ancestry.com, etc. Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance,

Karen Jenter
Michigan
Looking for Info About John F. Steele (b. 1860)

Hi,

I've tried every resource I can get my hands on to see if I can find out more about one of my Ancestors, John F. Steele, but I've had a lot of trouble. I'm hoping someone here might either have some information that they're willing to share, or maybe a few suggestions on where I might look myself for more info. Here's what I know about him and his family:

John F. Steele - b. March 18, 1860 in Virginia, d. sometime between 1900-1930, probably in Washington City, Washington DC.

John's spouse was Ida V. (Albritten) Steele - b. June 1, 1860 in Virginia, d. after January of 1944. Ida's parents were George & Susan Albritten. John & Ida married in about 1879, probably in Virginia.

They had 7 children that I know of: Catie (b. about 1879), Lottie M. (b. 22 Oct 1880, d. after 1944), Susie I. (b. 3 March 1882), Louis W. (b. 10 March 1884), Archie Lee (b. 8 March 1891, d. 12 Jun 1949), Fred, & Lindel. Fred and Lindel were mentioned by my grandfather in an interview, but I can't find any other sources to back him up.

The information I'm most interested in learning is the names of John F. Steele's parents. I've tried sending away for a birth certificate, but the State of Virginia can't find a record for him. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might look, or any information?

Many thanks for your time in reading this lengthy message!

Susan Steele

Both Elme and Anne Steele passed on while their children were quite young; Anne in 1859 and Elme shortly after in 1865. The four brothers Sam, James, Dick and Godfrey and one sister Edith were left in the care of their half-brother John and his wife.
Probably the best known character of the Steele family, Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, was born on January 5, 1849. He joined the militia in 1866 during the Fenian troubles and was a private in the Red River Expedition of 1870. He joined the Permanent Force Artillery in 1871 and, in 1873, became a sergeant major in the newly created NWMP. He achieved commissioned rank in 1878, and his first command was at Ft Qu'Appelle (Saskatchewan) in 1879, where he was in charge of police detachments supervising the building of the CPR, In 1885 he was promoted superintendent and in 1898 established Canadian government authority during the Klondike Gold Rush. Steele was given command of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the South African War, and in 1915 he commanded the second Canadian contingent to be sent overseas in World War I. In 1916 he was appointed general officer commanding the Shorncliffe area in England, a post he held until the end of the war and his retirement in 1918. He died at London, England on January 30, 1919.
Brothers Dick and Godfrey also felt the lure of western expansion and went west to join the North West Mounted Police at the urging of Samuel. After serving for a number of years both brothers settled at Beaver Lake. It was at Beaver Lake that James Steele, the youngest brother, arrived in the North West Territories in 1883. James homestead, taught at a variety of schools in the Beaver Lake Dictrict and actively participated in the Riel Rebellion, serving garrison duty at Fort Saskatchewan. James Steele was also a newspaper contributor, providing historical accounts, news items and short stories to papers in Orillia and Edmonton

Steele, Ventura Co., CA 1961

I am looking for my birth father. All I know about him, is his last name is Steele. My mother was 22 and her name was Nancy Durhsen, my father was something Steele.I was born in Ventura County, Calif. in Foster Memorial hospital. My father was 26 in 1961, that puts him born right around 1935. I found my mother, unfortunatly she was killed in a plane crash in Colorado, in the 70's. I just want to find my father. If any of you know, of any "Steele" who is of this age, and had a baby girl and gave her up, please let me know. I hold no grudge. I am very grateful, and loved by my adopted family. They are my family, always have been. But I need to fill this void, the one that all adopties have. Just to put the pieces together.

My great-great grandfather was Robert Steele. He was the son of Peter Henry Steele II and Eliza Dannelley.

They came from South Carolina to Alabama. I have been able to find branches from this family, but none directly from my ROBERT STEELE.
I am hoping that someone will see this that was a direct descendant from Robert.
Robert was married twice. He was married to Myra Baggett and Susana Barnhill. My great grandmother was Martha Luella Steele. She was probably from the union of Robert and Susana Barnhill.
There was about seven children. I have found a Robert W. (Coon) Steele that was from the union of Myra Baggett. If this family sees this, would you please contact me?

There has to be someone out there that is my link!

Thank you so much...

Mari

Steeles from N. Ireland 1840 onward to Ontario.

Hello everyone,my story goes something like this;
Robert Harper Steele and his wife Elizabeth Doherty immigrate to either Boston or New york (not sure) from Co. Tyrone, N Ireland in most likely 1845 with baby Matilda( born may 21 1844) in tow. I have reason to believe there was a older brother Thomas but not 100%. They had a son William, born sept. 1846 in Philly. They moved north to Stratford Ontario around 1853 or so. There were a large group of Steeles in this migration about the same time and place.Would like to hear from anybody with connections to this group of settlers. I have a lot of info I'd like to share.
Tom Stevenson.
