STEVENS / STEPHENS - Caroline/Spotsy. Cos., VA - 1700s

Hi,

Researching family of Maj. Joseph Stevens, and his son, Capt. Richard
Stevens, of Caroline/Spotsylvania Cos., VA. Joseph d. approx 1760s. Richard d. 1808. Richard's second wife: Mary Beverley Carter.

Seeking:

-- others working on this line to connect with, and with whom to share research

-- name of Joseph's wife, with evidence in support of the answer

-- name of Richard's FIRST wife, with evidence in support of the answer

-- proof (or even good probabilities) for where--across the pond--this line originated. (They are supposed to have originally come to Gloucester Co., VA, in the 1600s. I have not seen proof of this to substantiate it yet.)

Also researching (from same general area): Tyler, Terrell, Keeling, Carter, Beverley, Chew, Larkin, Todd (Have seen much of the published info, and have researched on some of the other primary sources.)

My STEVENS/STEPHENS and TYLER lines moved from VA via KY(?) to St. Louis Co., MO, in the early 1800s.

Also, have a Stevens 'proxy' in the FT DNA Stephens study, and on Y-Search. (CAES7)

Thanks for any info, help, useful direction, contacts, or leads.

Nicholas

Nicholas Smith

iisentaku (at) yahoo.com

Roger STEVENS/Esther SNOW, NY,NH,VT, Late 1790's Early 1800's

I'm trying to find more information on Esther Snow and Roger Stevens. There are records on the internet which seem to indicate that they were married in 1792 in Granville, New York. At that time Roger was aged 31 and Esther was aged 12 yrs, 9 months. I haven't been able to find that marriage documentation. I did find where Esther the daughter of Amos and Lydia Snow was b. September 16, 1774 which places her about 18 years of age. This birth recording is in the History of Cornish, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, page 348. So far, I've seen reference that other children of Amos and Lydia, are Amos, Jr. Molly, and Rufus. Any additional information on these families would be greatly appreciated.
DNA Descendants Thomas Stevens

I am trying to find a site which is collecting DNA studies of the descendants of Thomas Stevens [1679-1774] who died in Canaan Parish, Litchfield County CT. Although I have seen the Stevens name spelled as Stephens in census returns, etc I have not seen it spelled as any other way than Stevens and that is the way it is spelled in my line.

The Stevens line through my grandfather is PROBABLY traced back to Thomas Stevens and that is why I am specifically looking for this line's test page.

I recently provided a DNA sample [mtDNA] to the Sorenson Foundation [I urge everyone to do this--it is free and it will ultimately help sort out surnames. There is no immediate benefit to the person who donates except a discount on yDNA analyses -- if you have yDNA you want sequenced the discount is excellent. The url for them is:

www.smgf.org

This is not an advert for them but just thought I would throw that in.

TIA
judy

CHARLES STEVENS (TEXAS)

I am hitting a brick wall, as seems like so many researching a STEVENS line do.
I can come forward, but not back. Any help if you know this line of STEVENS please.
Charles Ernest Stevens 1917 - 1986 born Red River County Tx
Mother: Martha Emma McDougle Born mississippi 1897
Father: Charles Oliver Stevens Born Ok c.1890
Grandfather: John Stevens South Carolina
Grandmother: Rose or Rosa unknown
I know it is not a lot of information, but it is all I can find. My Father (Charles E,Stevens) didn't even know this much.
Somewhere in the past for Charles Oliver's Mother (Rose) she was married to a Denny. Divorced when still Pregnate with Charles Oliver and Married John Stevens.
Gets confusing. So Really My line would be the Denny's but have only known Stevens all my life. Any way, would sure like to hear from someone who might have a connection and more information on this family.

Stevens, John - Missouri 1882-1940 (brothers: Albert, Louis, Jesse)

Seeking to push back farther in my history. JOHN STEVENS is my great-great grandfather born Missouri ca. 1882 died 1940 in St. Louis. He had three brothers: Albert, Louis and Jesse. Their father is GEORGE STEVENS(b. ca. 1857 in Texas County, MO and died Franklin County, MO in 1928. George seems to have been married 3 times: to a Margaret Lee (deceased by 1900 census), Mary ?? Stevens(listed 1910 census) and a Sarah ?? Stevens (listed on his death certificate in 1928.) Geroge's father and mother may be WILIAM STEVENS and ELIZABETH ?? STEVENS per the 1900 and 1910 censuses which indicate WILLIAM and ELIZABETH may have been born in ILLINOIS. Or per George's death certificate WILLIAM and IRENE FRITZ STEVENS may be his parents, both born in Texas County, MO. My trail back stops with WILLIAM and ELIZABETH/or IRENE in Illinois/or Missouri.

Anyone out there recognize these family names? Of the siblings or other spouses for George? I can try to dig further back in Texas County, Missouri, but are there any more clues as to where/what Illinois county I can check next for William and Elizabeth?

Thanks. contact me at jeanbwiley55@msn.com

Appears in The Ravia Weekly News, Friday, 21 April 1911, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Relatives of the Unknown are Found

The idenity of the man who was found dead on the morning of February 18, has at last been made known.

Last Saturday a man giving his name as Catey, came here from Anthony, Kansas, and stated that the description given where that of an uncle of his, who had been missing since some time in January. After seeing a photograph, which was taken soon after the body was found Mr. Catey was sure that it was that of his uncle, George Bennett Stevens.

Mr. Catey went to denison, where he secured the services of experts who came here Sunday morning and had the remains disinterred and placed in a metalic vault and shipped to Anthony for burial.

Mr. Catey while not very talkative upon the subject, left the impression that there would be some investigations made regarding the mysterious death of his relative.

The deceased, and another stranger, came here on the 17th of February, an were inquiring for a man by the name of Carter. They were around town all day and the next morning, about 8 o'clock the body of the old man was found lying about 100 yards south of the Frisco depot. The other man has never been heard fo since they were seen together the evening before at an old empty building in the south part of town.

Here is the mystery now. Who was the companion and what caused his sudden flight? Was the old man murdered? If so, as is generally believed, how, and for what purpose? There was no evidence of violence found, but some claimed that there were signs of carbolic acid. If so, it had been weakened to such an extent that it left no evidence in the mouth of the victim.

The children are, supposedly, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne, James and John. I am descended from Elizabeth.
Several family trees on rootsweb and elsewhere state that Owen Thomas was the children's guardian. One even gives a date of 16 Nov 1744, when Mary and Elizabeth chose their guardian. I have reviewed the microfilm records for the Caroline County Court Orders all around this date, and there is no such guardianship there.
Does any have a copy of the guardianship papers or court records, or know where they can be found?
Also, can anyone explain to me why Elizabeth, who was (it is said) married when her father died, need a guardian?
Thanks for any insights anyone can give.
Sandy Wincek

He married the widow, Margaret FORSTER/FOSTER BARNES ca.1784 in Berkeley Co., Virginia (if our information is correct). We have found a John E. STEVENS/STEPHENS m.Susannah LEIGH that looks like a good possibility. We feel Henry STEVENS had a brother named Thomas and a sister named Margaret b.1754 who married John POLAND around 1772. Hope someone can give us a clue or two to prove this connection.

She was born April 30, 1719, daughter of Mary Churchill 1687/88-Jan. 25, 1723 and Edward Stevens born ab. 1684. She married Benjamin Harlow on July 25, 1738 in Plymouth, MA.

I know the Churchill side has disputes about Mary Churchill being the daughter (or not) of Mary Bryant, but I can find nothing about her father, Edward.
Need ancestry of Ruth Stevens, born ca. 1758 prob. in Connecticut (or Mass.), died 2 Apr. 1842 in Colebrook, Conn., married Daniel Canfield May 1785 prob. Winchester Dist., Litchfield Co., Conn. Rose Canfield Genealogical Collection, FHL film #945,934 says she may be related to Simeon Stevens but no reason or source records or location known for him to confirm any connection. Was Ruth married before she married Daniel - it is known she was Daniel's second wife. His 1st wife died in 1784 so he didn't wait too long to get married again.

Also, I would be happy to hear from anyone who is descended from this couple.

Parents of Marietta Stevens

I am searching for information regarding my great, great grandmother Marietta Stevens' parents.

Marietta(Lillie?)Stevens was born in about 1860 in Massachusettes. She was the wife of Emerson Woodworth Lyon (1850-?) who was the son of Elisha Lyon (1810-1882) and Delosha Bosworth (1815-1906) both from Connecticut.

Marietta had atleast one child, the one, my great grandmother Daisy Lyon who was born in Massachusettes on 7 aug 1891 and was married to Fay Marvin (1890-1970) of Randall, NY. The couple later resided in Syracuse, NY.

As for Marietta's parents, my only possible leads are a couple from Hyde Park, Norfolk, Massachusetts in the 1880 U.S. Census by the names of J.M. Stevens (father) and C.C. Stevens(mother), they were 63 and 55, respectively, in 1880 with three children listed:

M.Lillie Stevens-age:20
Ralph A. Stens-age:14
Nellie E. Stevena-age:11

Any information on J.M. and C.C. Stevens, if they are indeed my 3x great grandparents would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
