South Carolina Stoney

Is there any information on a Clarence Martin Stoney b. 10/10/1883 in South Carolina? Clarence married in 1913 to May T. Chaplin b. Dec 1888 in Canada, daughter of James Chaplin and Elizabeth Beattie from Scotland. According to Census records, both of Clarence Martin Stoney's parents were born in South Carolina, but I cannot find his parents. Clarence and May appear in the 1920 and 1930 census in Oregon. I have no records linking Clarence to his family in South Carolina. Can anyone help? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Descendants of Gaillard Stoney, Donzel Stoney (Calif.)

I am hoping to locate living descendants of brothers Gaillard Stoney (1868-1928) or Donzel Stoney (1870-1946). Both were born in Napa CA and died in San Francisco CA. Their father was Thomas Porcher Stoney, and their sister was Kate W. Stoney.
From their death notices I see their children were all girls:
Gaillard: Mrs. Margaret Field, whose children were Davis Pryer and Gaillard Pryer.
Donzel: Florence S. Davis, Frances S. Sanders, and Katherine S. Loker. I don't have names of his grandchildren.

Thomas Porcher Stoney was descended from a South Carolina family, descending from French Huguenot Pierre Gaillard. His wife was Kate M. Allen, a native of Vermont.
Thomas Porcher Stoney was born in South Carolina and came to California in 1856.
If you are a descendant of this family I would be glad to share information and photos that I have here about them.

I know that she married Henry David Caver, I believe 22 Feb 1872 and I do have plenty of information on their children. I believe that she was born in SC. However, I get conflicting information from the Census reports which indicate SC one time and MS the other. Now I need any leads or help on researching Molly. She passed away 6 March 1908 in Prentiss Co., MS.
Thanks... Robert

CAPTAIN JOHN STONEY (1757-1821)

I have a copy of the Stoney-Baynard ruins with drawings of William Eddings Baynard, tabby, Sea Island Cotton and Baynard Hall.

In 1776, Captain John Stoney bought the 1000 acres known as Braddock's Point Plantation from Beaufort merchant John Mark Verdier and, around 1793 began building the mansion house whose ruins are available to view by the public on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

His son, Captain James Stoney (1772-1827) who inherited the property, left it at his death to Dr. George Mosse Stoney who gave it ot his eldest son John (Saucy Jack) in 1838. Two years later, Saucy Jack, according to one of the colorful local legends, lost the house and land in an all-night poker game. The winner: William Eddings Baynard, a wealthy planter from Edisto Island who already owned 2 island plantations.

Baynard was a highly successful planter of the world-famous Sea Island Cotton which he grew at Braddock's Point as well as his other holdings. HE and wife Catherine raised 4 children here and it was here that he died in 1849 at age 49.

When Union forces invaded Hilton Head Island in 1861, the Baynards evacuated. During the Civil WAr, the house was used by Union troops and, according to oldtimers' stories, it was burned by a Confed3erate raiding party. It took Baynard's family 15 years before they could regain Braddock's Point by paying $500 in back taxes to the Federal Government. However, they never again lived at Braddock's Point.
Stoney family 1700s

The Stoney family seems to be quite elusive! I have been trying to find family for Winnie Lou Stoney born 1 May 1762 in Monmouth County, NJ. She married Samuel Williams in Shrewsbury, Monmouth, NJ on June 26, 1780 according to Quaker records. I cannot find anything else, so far, on her. The only other STONEY I have found in that area is George Stoney who appears on Tax lists from 1789 to 1806 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ. Any clues would be appreciated!

Misc. info: Andrew Robinson Stoney b.1845 Ireland m. Mary Eleanor Bowes. Lady Bowes was also married to John Lyon 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Stoney family in Ireland great scientists and mathematicians. Also found an Alfred Bedle Stoney b. 1842.
