Hi all. I have been tracing my direct maternal line,which has taken me into families I had never known were in my tree. I see that George Stovall of Henrico County, VA, is supposed to have married an Elizabeth first (with whom he would have had Ruth who would marry Robert Hairtson). Some internet sites have given this Elizabeth's last name as Cooper. I was wondering where the evidence for that was, and if anyone had any hint of her origins. FYI, I am tracing my direct maternal line because I have had my DNA analyzed, and so am interested in, if possible, finding the origins of my "mitochondrial" line. This is where I have currently dead ended.

This is a longshot, but does anyone on this board have any family stories of an Aunt Mag who was known to take in orphans? I'm looking for information on a woman who may have taken in three orphaned girls, last name Prince, and possibly found employment for them as servants in private homes. She was known as "Aunt Mag" to the girls. This would have been around the turn of the century in Tennessee. I know this is kind of crazy but you never know!

Stovalls in Cuthbert, GA or surrounding areas

I am looking for my great grandparents and grandparents siblings. I am Angela Stovall who lives in Atlanta, GA. My grandfather Crowder Stovall married Mandie Florence Dodson Stovall. Mandie was born in Ellenwood, GA. They had 12 children who were raised in Atlanta, GA. Five of the children are now living and in Atlanta. Crowder was born in 1908 and brothers and sisters were Claire, Love, Lee, Nancy, T-Ollie, and John. Based on my father's birth certificate, Crowder was born in Cuthbert, GA. His brothers and sisters more than likely were born there as well. I believe my great-grandparents were Buff and Nancy Stovall. I don't know Nancy's maiden name. I was told that Buff maybe lived or was born in Abbeville, Alabama...(not for sure though).

Crowder traveled alot as he was doing masonry work. I was told he traveled throughout the southeastern states such as AL, GA, New Orleans-LA and MS. I know about my grandmother's family tree but don't know about my grandfather's.

I also know that Crowder's sister, Lee Stovall married Willie Shingles.

If anyone can help me put the pieces together that would be great and most appreciative.

She had a brother, Doc Stovall, and a sister, Emily Stovall Herridge. On the only birth certificate I have found (my mother-in-law's), the only name given was "Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Johnson" with no further information. My mother-in-law was born in Lott, Texas. Elizabeth and Sam Johnson moved to South Texas, around San Benito and Harlingen in the 1920s or 1920s. Elizabeth died in Corpus Christi in the 1955s. That is about all I know. So I am stymied. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Stovall in ILLINOIS, MISSOURI

Charles Henry Stovall was my father (born January/1910 -- died November/1985). He was born in Grand Tower, IL. He has an older half brother named Clarence, and younger siblings named Carl, Helen, and Ella.

My dad was VERY secretive about his family history. I believe my dad's father's name was Henry Charles Stovall, married to Emma Goodwin.

I rememer in the 60's my mom (Irene Fuller)saying my dad had been contacted some years prior by letter about some land in Cape Girardeau, MO that he had inherited, but my dad did not want the land. Nothing more was mentioned about it. (A Cape Girardeau connection)

Also, in the 60's he received two telephone calls from people in Kentucky (a Kentucky connection) saying they thought they were related. He did not want to talk to them and hung up on them (if you are the one that was hung up on and are reading this, I appologize to you for his actions).

If anyone could help me find my Stovall connection with the little information I have supplied, I would greatly appreciate it.

Stovall / Mayfield Connections - Descendants???

My name is Donna Hamm and I'm the list admin for the Rootsweb Mayfield surname mailing list.

I'm looking for someone who can prove a connection as a direct descendant to Mayfield / Hill / Stovall lines mentioned in a Bible owned by one of our Mayfield listmembers. The Bible spans a considerable time period.

There are at least two Stovall / Mayfield lines mentioned:

1. Christopher H. Stovall and Catherine "Kitty" "Kate" Mayfield.

2. John T. Stovall and Lottle L. Mayfield.

I have a lot of additional information including census info. We've been trying for several years to find someone who can prove a connection as a direct descendant. The search has become more critical. The owner of the Bible is terminally ill. Recently I have seen her listed as Dorcus Vaulton and Dorcus Drury. No one has given documentation for any of these theories. My question: HAS her name been found? If so, WHERE, so I can find it too. If someone has documented her, can you please share with the rest of us? Is she still unknown? Thanks.

Harold Stovall is my maternal grandfather. I believe he is the same Harold Stovall that died in Navarro, TX, 11 Aug 93. He was married to my grandmother, Leona Wanda (?maiden name) in the late 1930s-early 1940s. He later married Jane, with sons Dean and Chris(?) and a daughter, I think. He also had a younger brother named Donald. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thought I would post Nancy Garner Stovall's obit. She was the wife of James Stovall and he the son of George M. Stovall and Susanna Chandler. George son of Bartholomew, Bartholomew son of John Stovall, and John son of immigrant Bartholomew. Nancy came to Bartow county Ga when her husband was a successful drawer in the Cherokee land lottery. We didn't write down which paper this came out of but it was in all likelihood Bartow or Gordon county.

Mrs. J. M. Stovall died at her home near here last Sunday.Jan. 22, at the advanced age of 92 years, one month and six days.She was Miss Nancy Garner and was reared in Union county, SC where she married Mr. Stovall in 1824.They moved here in 1837 and she has resided in the community where she died continuelly for 62 years. She was a member of Cumberland Presbyeterian church for many of these years.
Mrs. Stovall was a remarkably strong woman having enjoyed the best of health until she was 88, when she began to fail.She however could get about until recently and had good eyesight until two years ago. Five children survive her. She was buried near the home she occupied before the red men were driven west on Tuesday.

I hope this will help someone.

Alex Stovall

Hello,

I'm trying to find an ancestor of mine--Alex Stovall. He died after 1910, lived in Carroll County, VA, and was married to 1) Rebecca (or Eluckena) Stovall and 2) Nannie Franklin. He and Rebecca had 5 children: Lucinda (my great-great-grandmother, married Thomas Lineberry), George, Ida, Florentine, and Laura. Either Alex or his first wife may have been Native American. He first appears in Carroll County in the 1870 census. I've searched the counties all around and haven't been able to determine where he came from or when he and Rebecca married. With the exception of my great-great-grandmother, the rest of the children disappeared. There are no other Stovalls in this county. Any ideas? It's like this family popped up out of nowhere, and then disappeared. I even spoke to one of Alex's surviving grandchildren; he said that Alex never spoke about his past or his family. I found the certificate for his second marriage, and his parents are listed as 'unknown!' If anybody has any help or advice to offer, I'd surely appreciate it.
Thanks!

Stovall - TX / AR

I was adopted, but have been slowly researching my origin. My STOVALL family came from Northern Arkansas - lived in TX (Falls & Wood counties) apx early 1900s. Grandfather was Henry Victor Stovall - married Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Albright or Cook (I know there is an Albright connection, but finally got my father's SS application & he gave her last name as Cook -- so it could have been a previous marriage, or maybe she was adopted by the Albright family). According to the Census, they had 8 children. Also, I found out I have half-siblings connected with CHAPMAN of TX/CA.

I looked in the Stovall books a year or so ago, but my family wasn't listed... sigh... that would have been too easy.

Like another poster mentioned, I'm interested in *any* possible 'blood' connections! Adopted at 7 yrs old and STOVALL proud!!

If this sounds familiar, please let me know! Thanks,
~~~Octavia
My father Robert Mims Floyd married first Ellen Stovall. They had Mae, Jessie, Carl and Marvin Edgar Stovall who had changed his name from Floyd to Stovall. I visited Marvin in Anniston AL several times. I have his picture and obit. I had been in contact with his son Marvin Edgar JR but he has passed on re Social Security records. Would like to be in touch with any of Marvin Sr.s children. In the 1910 census for Clay CO Al it has Henry A Stovall as father-in-law livng with my father. Ellen died in 1912 a little while after Marvin was born. He then married my mother Annie Lou Boswell. Will share what I have. I have found Henry A, Stovall that has a wife Julia Hammoc. Any help greatly appreciated to carry line back on the Stovall side. I have my father's Floyd line back to 1500 in Wales proven. Also my mother's Boswell line proven with many vital records I have bought on her line. boswell@fmtc.com
