I am looking for info on Robert Henry Swain, not the one who wrote the book. There is one who came from England to Salt Lake when the LDS moved out there; I am not sure if he is the one, but he had alot of information that was used for LDS temple work, and I can't figure out who he was. How many Robert Henry Swains are there? Sue

Swains and other families in North Easton , NY, and Newburg

I have just returned from a trip to NYC to research my Swain line. I am still trying to connect Captain Shubael Swain and his wife Sarah Turner Swain with a Swain family. My biggest hints are a census report of one of his daughters that says her parents came from Mass; the next is a book on the Swains that says a group moved from Nantucket to North Easton , NY in the late 1700- this included a group of various families such as Meader and other names. My next hint and problem is that I found Sarah's death announcement- she died of a lingering illness on May 8, 1844; the death register says that her body was removed to Newburg, NY, which is in Orange County. Shubael, who died about 5 years later, is not listed on the death record in NYC, nor can I find an obituary for him. I have looked in Early American Newspapers on the NYGBS site, but can't find one. It is a puzzle. He could always have followed her to that area- probably there were relatives there. He could have visited his son in OHio, the last few years of his life.
Anyway, I am wondering if this removal to Newburg might indicate that they were part of that group that came to North Easton. The first of them were attacked by Indians, but then there wre more. Does anyone know much about these Quaker families who came there. I am really stumped by this man. There must be at least a death announcement someplace.
Sue

Captain Shubael Swain of Mass and NYC

I am still brickwalled on my Captain Shubael Swain of Mass, who moved into NYC and married Sally Turner; his children were Shubael Edgar, Sarah Ann, and Valentine, and possibly two unknown girls. I have found, through all of my research, that he fits perfectly the Lydia Ellis Ebenezer Swain family, except that the Folger Collections say that he and a brother died at sea in 1808; I would like to find out how to prove or disprove this. He looked like Robert Burns. His son, Valentine moved to Ohio, and some of his children moved to Kansas City, Mo, and the Captain, after his wife died, moved up there and died there- no burial record. Sarah's body was shipped temporarily to Newburgh, NY, but did not stay there and I dont' know where she went. I wonder if she was part of the Nantucket group that moved to Easton, on the Hudson. Any one have any knowledge or suggestions? Sue

My gggrandfather was James Swain/Swann(found it spelled both ways). He was born in Georgia around 1819. He died around 1890 or before. He died in South Arkansas. He was married around May 25, 1866 to an Elizabeth Wilder born around 1849 in Ark. and died around 1933 in Bradley Co. Ark. I believe that to be his second wife(not sure). They had a daughter named Rebecca J. Swain around 1867. She was maried to a J. W. Henry I believe was born in La. and died around 1899 in Ark. I believe his parents were born in either Mi. or Mo. If any one has any info on these people please let me know.

Joab Swain 1808 NJ Deed

Before I pay for the Cumberland County (NJ) Deed below, I want to see if someone already has a copy, or at least an abstract. The NJ Archives has this Deed boxed with the "Albert Peterson Papers" [PPETE001] which primarily contain transactions of the Lee family. This was the only mention of a Swain.

Possibly this Deed is also at the Cumberland County Courthouse, and/or the LDS center at Vineland, NJ. The other two Deeds below MIGHT mention a Swain.

My long-term interest is to determine the first name of Joab's mother, a Langley. Joab's father was a Richard Swain who died before 1792.

Cumberland is just north of Cape May County, where Richard the son of the Nantucket Richard Swain relocated before 1700. Relevant records also MIGHT exist in Atlantic County, where some Swains lived in Tuckahoe, wedged between Cape and Cumberland. I say "might" because, to complicate things even more, Atlantic County was cut out from Gloucester County in 1837, so the pre-1837 recs might instead be in the GC Courthouse at Woodbury.

----box 5 #4. Joab Swain, to Thomas Lee, Cumberland (town not given)12/12/1808

----box 4 #80. William Donnelly, to M.E. Church, Pt Eliz., Cumberland 12/25/1840

----box 5 #29. Methodist Society to Thomas Lee (town not given) Cumberland 9/5/1812
Alfred Swain bio (1825 - after 1888) mentions Nantucket, NC, IN

This was on a Rush County board (Rootsweb)

-----History of Rush County, Indiana--
1888--Brant & Fuller--Chicago--Page 756

----Alfred Swain, one of Rush County’s old pioneers, and an honored and worthy citizen of Rushville, was born in Union Co, Indiana, September 22, 1825. He was the youngest of four children, three sons and one daughter, born to Thomas and Lydia (Folger) Swain, both natives of North Carolina, of English descent.

----His father was the son of Joseph and Jedidah (Macy) Swain, both natives of Nantucket Island. His mother was the daughter of Latham and Matilda (Worth) Folger, both of whom were also born on Nantucket Island. His two brothers were Franklin F. and Alonzo, both of whom are deceased. His sister’s name is Elvira, who is now the widow of Isaac Barnard, and resides in Clarke Co., Iowa.

----When he was seven years old, his parents removed to Rush County and located in the woods of Posey Township, where our subject spent his boyhood and early youth assisting to clear and cultivate his fathers farm. His mother died when he was eight years old, after which he continued with his father upon the farm until the latter’s death, which occurred January 7, 1846.

----For about six years thereafter our subject was variously employed, but chiefly as a farm hand and as a clerk. In January 1852, he engaged in general merchandising in Manilla, this county. On the 31st day of December 1852, he had this misfortune of having his store and entire stock destroyed by fire. A loss, which Mr. Swain sorely felt, as it was wholly uninsured. For some four or five years thereafter he was engaged as salesman in a store at Manilla, and other wise employed, after which he spent a period of about five years upon the old homestead, in Posey Township. In 1864, he opened up a country store in Posey Township, which he conducted about four years and a half. He then removed to Arlington, where his attention was given to mercantile pursuits until 1874. In January 1875, he came to Rushville, a resident of which he has been ever since. For about seven years after locating here he dealt in lumber. Since 1881, he has had no regular pursuit, but has been leading the life of a retired citizen.

----His first marriage occurred September 16, 1852, when Miss Laurinda Barnard became his wife. She was born in Union County, Indiana, July 17, 1825, and was the daughter of Jethro and Sally (Gardner) Barnard, both natives of North Carolina.

----Mrs. Laurinda Swain died March 18, 1874, and August 1, 1875, Mr. Swain was married to Miss Rhoda E. Barnard, a younger sister of his first wife, who was born in Union County, this state, April 3, 1837. Mr. Swain’s first marriage resulted in the birth of three children, as follows: Alva H., born July 15, 1854, Clara E, born October 30, 1856, and Rosa E., born July 15, 1859, died August 23, 1863.

----Mr. And Mrs. Swain are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The former has been a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge over thirty-five years. In politics he is an ardent Republican. His first presidential vote was cast for Martin Van Buren in 1848. Since 1856 he has been an ardent supporter of the principles of the Republican Party. He served as Assessor of Posey Township one term, and served this county as Real Estate Appraiser, one term.

----(I know nothing about the above persons, but am passing this bio along. -- DD)

Contradictions on GeoCities and/or Amer. Genealogist

(I forgot to post this on Rootsweb's Swain Board, which also reaches the List; disregard my earlier msg.)

Susanne wrote ((clip)) Most believe he had two wives: unk Basill/Basell and Elizabeth Jane Godfrey widow of George Bunker. There is confusion about his 2nd wife's name. She is known as Elizabeth and as Jane. Most surmise she is the same person. But,that is not proven. No one I've researched has Richard with 5 wives. I have nota clue who Jane Barker is.---------------------------------------------------------------

If Elizabeth, aka Jane, was born a Godfrey, but later widow of a Bunker, why isn't it imaginable that someone's handwriting interpretation could take "Barker" for "Bunker"? I've seen greater variances than that. I do not know the database developer for the GeoCities site, but would of course like to know sources for that, as well as the American Genealogist article. Since I have never dug in courthouses or hist. societies for original Swain data myself, I cannot challenge either one. They may well each have imperfections. _____________________________________________________

Four Swains are listed as Cape May County Revolutionary Patriots in the book, The History of Cape May County, New Jersey. *

Aaron Swain --- Nezer Swain --- Reuben Swain --- Silas Swain

I know nothing about them, but am curious if someone can trace one into later generations. Also, what is the youngest and oldest they could have been to actually serve in a fighting unit between 1776 and 1783? I have read that drummers or bugle boys could be as young as 14.

*Author: Lewis Townsend Stevens; Publisher: Lewis T.

The Swain I seek is Rev. Richard of Southern NJ, who lived 1763-1808. His mother was a Langley, but he did not mention her first name in his Journal. A Methodist hitorian feels his father was a Richard, too, and that they descended from the first Richard who came to Cape May County, NJ from Nantucket. Rev. Richard and his bro. Nathan were both Methodist ministers.

I have placed this on the Swain Board, which I hope also still "gateways" to the Swain List. If you answer, please do the same, by going to the Board from Rootsweb's main page.

-- Dolores Langley in Delaware

Hi,
My gggrandfather was Spencer Coleman Swain born about 1845 in TN with both parents born in TN per the 1880 census.
At LDS there is a William Swain born <1819> married to a Nancy Webb born <1823> both in Wilson County, Tennessee.
It has them married 3 Feb 1844 in Wilson County, Tennessee.
In the 1850 census in Dyer County, TN there is a:

Nancy Swain born about 1825 TN
SC Swain born about 1845 TN
JH Swain born about 1848 TN

They are living next to a Webb family.

In the 1860 census in Wilson County, TN there is a:

Nancy T Swain born about 1827 TN
Coleman Swain born about 1845 TN
William Swain born about 1848 TN
Sarah Swain born about 1852 TN
Martha Swain born about 1855 TN
Delana Swain born about 1858 TN

There is a William Swain born about 1820 in the 1850 census and 1830 in the 1860 census in Wilson County. I'm thinking that it is the same William with a mistake in the years.
In the 1850 census he is shown as William W and is living with William M, Nancy and Joseph M Swain.
In the 1860 census he is living with the Francis and Nancy Dillard family. Francis Dillard married a Nancy Swain and
Francis's brother Andrew Jack married a Rebecca Swain.
His brother William Henry married a Kate Swain.
William W Swain is the son of William M Swain born about 1782 in North Carolina.
They are all in Wilson County in the 1850 census.

Spencer Coleman Swain married Susan Caroline Miller. They are in Wise County, TX in the 1880 census.

Their children are:

Clara Hadassah born 1880 TX
Sarah Ann born 1883 TX
William Abram born 1886 TX
James S. born 1889 TX
Millard Lee born 1895 Indian Territory

I'm thinking that Spencer Coleman's father's name is William because they named their first son William Abram and her father's name was Abram.

Does anyone know what happened to the William W Swain and if he married Nancy Webb? There are a lot of holes and questions. I'm wondering if anyone has any information that might help. Thank you very much.

Teresa Prather

Chambers was in his 40s suggesting a late first or possibly second marriage. Can't find him in the 1910 census.

Chambers was the son of General David Bell McKibbin and a research mystery person...so far. The McKibbins are a branch of my maternal family.

Anyone out there with info?

Swain origins and traits

The first Swain was Otto Swain, a Danish Viking who invaded the British Isles, Spain and the Mediterranean areas. The name is spelled differently in each country, of course. What has interested me about my Swain line, is that there is a consistent interest in the oceans. The farthest back I can go in my line is into the late 1700's, to a ship captain. As I have studied my line, down to living descendants, I have noticed a consistent preference for living on coastal areas and involvement in water sports and activities. I wonder how many Swains have inheritied this trait and how many of you have Swains that have done the same thing? Since I am doing very extensive historical research, I find it very interesting and fascinating. I remember reading that Swains tend to be outgoing and socialble people, which certainly fits my family all the way down. Just knowing the origins of the Swains has helped me to understand my own Swain line better, and the interests of my living family as well as my deceased family members. U also find it very rewarding to fit people into a social and historical context, rather than just searching for records. Sue

Valentine G. Swain, son of Vanentine Swain, who moved from NYC to Cincinatti, moved to Kansas City, and had at least two girls- Millicent and Grace. Several years ago, someone bought swain photos of my family, put them on Ebay, and I was tracked down and bought them. I am wondering if anyone has information on the descendants of this family, as I would like to find out more about the house sale, and what relatives might still be living. Valentine Swain(e) is the brother of my grandfather, Shubael Edgar Swain, raised in NYC and then moved to Jersey City. He was a lawyer in NYC. Valentine was a ship chandler, and his father a ship captain by the name of Shubael Swain. He probably came from Mass. Sue

Shubael Swain

I don't know why I suddenly was getting messages on my email from a gateway message board into this site, this morning, and when I tried to send one it came back to me so I will post here, again. Here is my block.
My grandmother, who was a famous ballerina, was Eva Swain [Vollmer], born in
1898 to Edgar Swain and Evangeline Sherrer [Eckhardt] in NYC. Edgar had a
sister, named Katie Swain Van Vorst, who died after giving birth, of TB. His
father was Shubael Edgar Swain, who married Catherine Nagle, and was a well
known lawyer in NYC, although he moved to Jersey City to live. He worked as
a partner with Benjamin M. Stilwell. He died in 1892. I only know the names
of some of his siblings. Sarah Ann Swain Leggett, married to Isaac Leggett.
Valentine Swaine, married to Lucina Drake, and moved to Cincinattie Ohio.
Some of his children moved out to Kansas City, Mo.
There are more siblings but I don't know their names.
His father and mother were Shubael Swain and Sarah Turner. Shubael was a
ship captain, I think from Mass., who moved into NYC in 1803. He may have
been a lawyer before that, according to one news article I have about my
grandmother. I have been unable to connect Shubael Swain with any other
Swain families.

The other day I was looking at Early American Newspapers, and looked at
something I had seen beffore. A Shubael Swain was protesting a fine. Because
I just noticed that it appeared in newspapers in a number of different
states, I wonder if it is my Shubael Swain, and that it had something to do
with his law practice or if he was in the government, in anyway. It doesn't
say what the fine was about. I wonder how to find out more about that- it
occurred in the late 1700's.

Shubael's wife died in the 1840's and her body was shipped to Newburgh NY,
but that was a stopping place for her and I don't know where she was sent
to to be buried. I also can't find an obituary for Shubael. Apparently he
didn't die in NYC, as I checked the death lists; He died in 1849- where, I
don't know. The two obvious places would be where his wife was shipped to or
maybe in Cincinatti, visiting his son. Or maybe visiting the other sibilings
whose names I don't know.

There are a number of Captain Shubael Swains, and I have looked at all of
the Swain books, and everything else I know to do, but not knowing where he
died is creating a problem. Anyone have any suggestions.I have a photo of a
portrait of him- he looked exactly like Robert Burns. According to the back
of the photo, he was born in 1777 and died in 1849.

Sue Maxwell
Leo Swain - Picture

I have copied a picture of Leo Swain that was in a group of pictures I borrowed from a distant Hogmire relative. I believe the picture is from Bear Lake MI, probably 1880-1890. If anyone might be related, email me and I'll be glad to forward the picture on to you. I would love to know the connection of him to the Hogmire family. This group of pictures has been passed down 4 generations already so the original owners are long gone.

RENSHAW - SWAIN

I'm trying to locate Christina nee Renshaw, who married Curtis Swain. They lived in the Petersburg, Virginia area, and had two daughters. Christina and Curtis divorced. She remarried to a man with the last name of Jamieson. They left the state of Virginia. No one who is living today remembers her second husband's name nor the daughters names. My cousin and I have been trying to find them for a long time.

Curtis' parents were Arthur and Callie nee Dinkens Swain. He was born about 1927 in the Danville, Pittslvania, VA area. Christina Renshaw was born in Petersburg about 1935. Her parents were Silas and Ardelia nee Carlisle Renshaw.

If anyone knows them, or where they may be, please contact me at lufsey@hotmail.com.

Thank you.
Tina Ellis

MaryJane already had Randy when she and my dad were married but Jeffery was born from their union. Jeffery Swain was born in late 1965 or early 1966 (I think). I would like to get a birth certificate on him but I do not know how to go about it since I don't have the exact date of his birth. I also have information that my father is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in St Petersburg, Division L, Section 5, Block 8 and Lot 18. If anyone has a digital camera and would be willing to get a picture of the tomb stone - please contact me regarding what you would charge me. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
