Wm. Symons was born 14 August 1873 to John B and Alice Savory Symons in England. His mother died during his infancy and he made his home with an uncle and aunt. When he was nine, he immigrated to America with his stepmother and two brothers, Albert and Alvin Symons. They joined their father and husband who had immigrated a few years before and settled in the Drayton area. Later they moved into what is now Manilla Township. His father and two brothers took up homestead claims. John B. Symons did some blacksmithing, his trade in England, for his neighbors.
When Wm. was still in his teens, his family moved to Texas seeking a warmer climate. Wm remained behind and pre-empted his Dad's and brother's homesteads while working for neighbors and doing chores in the slack season for little more than his board as he continued to prove up his properties.
During the harvest season he ran a steam engine on the threshing rig owned by a friend. Harvest season often lasted into December as the machine moved fra farm to farm threshing for others. The last to be threshed would have to have their bundles stacked so that they could thresh out of the stack because of the snow.
Wm married Martha "Mattie" Leach, 7 Dec 1898 in Langdon. She was the daughter of William and Martha Leach. Later Wm Symons was able to obtain his father-in-law's homestead when the Leach family moved to Canada to take up yet another homestead.
There were seven children born to this union:
Maud Symons (Mrs Charles McGauvran), Langdon, ND
William John Symons, deceased.
Alfred (Fred) Symons, deceased.
George Symons, deceased.
Martha Symons (Mrs Milton Pearson), Easby, ND
Mary Symons (Mrs Ed Evans)
Adam Symons
All the children made their homes in Cavalier County, ND.
Wm died 29 May 1946. His widow continued to make her home on the farm with sons John and Adam until she died 14 April 1952. In 1980, when age and ill health caused John to completely retire, he sold his farming interests to a great nephew, Tim McGauvran and moved to Langdon, where he resided until his death 9 April 1983. Adam continues his farming practice on the family farm.---recorded 4/85
