New Titus Website

Happy New Year to all you Titus researchers!

I am pleased to announce that my new Titus Website is now up and running. You are invited to have a look at it and give me your comments.

The main databases consist, firstly, of Titus transcriptions from all the US census records from 1790 until 1930, with the exception of 1890, which was destroyed.

I have also provided indexes of all the Titus-related names that I have connected to the English, Dutch, German and New Brunswick lines.

There is also an index of the Titus names in the US Social Security Death Index.

Some of the files are quite large (I have over 140,000 names) and they may be difficult to download for those who don't have high-speed internet access. If so, I would like to know.

So here is the URL:

http://www.titusfamily.ca

All the best

Bill Arthurs

Abiel Titus....LOYALIST

As I try to correct/confirm Abiel's marriage record I have come accross some interesting material that I have NOT seen talked about in any forums before concerning Abiel (b. 1751/52) I was wondering if anyone has any additional information with regard to Abiel's Loyalist activities. Interestingly he was a very visable citizen of Brooklyn after the war....a member of the first FDNY in Brooklyn, friends with the Van Nostrand's and Leffert families etc...

Excerpts below are from A History of the City of Brooklyn including the Old Town and Village of Brooklyn, theTown of Bushwick, and the Village and City of Williamsburgh, vol. II , by Henry R. Stiles.

Document 1. People and Buildings from Guy’s “Snow Scene of Brooklyn in 1820” On the corner of Front Street and the Old Road was the large and very old (wood) frame building. It was occupied as a hardware store by Thomas W. Birdsall and Joel Bunce. Above Birdsall’s corner was the residence of Abiel Titus. It was a small dwelling (house) with a narrow front on Fulton Street. In the picture, Titus is feeding his chickens in the gateway of the yard between his house and barn. He supported the loyalist side during the revolution and was servant to a major in the British army. Later he was a butcher.

Also found a rare reference to "my" Theodore..Abiel's grandson and son of Ira

Brooklyn, New York General & Business Directory for 1840-41.

Brooklyn:
T. & J. W. Leslie & W. F. Chichester, 1840

TINKER, Henry, grocer, 131 Nassau
TITUS, Abiel, 128 Prospect
TITUS, Ancel, crockery store, 114 Fulton
TITUS, Edward H., printer, 20 York
TITUS, F.R., china & glass store, 158 Fulton
TITUS, James, butcher, 1 Brooklyn Market, h 131 Sands
TITUS, Rich.E., Green lane c Prospect
TITUS, Sam., merchant, Cheever place
TITUS, Theodore, butcher, 192 Pearl
TITUS, Thos.W., inspector of customs, Jackson n Lafayette

Hi
timeline for Titus Syrachs de Vries

Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Titus Syrachs de Vries
(Tytus de Vries, Titus Sierecks, Titus Syrachsz, Titus Syrex, Titus Cyre etc.)

“….that he was probably of the noble De Vries family of Holland is indicated not only by his name, which should have been Titus Syrachs simply had he been of the commonalty, but more suggestively that some of his children at least were baptized as Tryntje Titus de Vries, Syrach Titus de Vries, etc.” (NYGBS record 1908 “The Dutch Titus family by Frank H. Titus, M.D.,Dover, NH 1870”)
There is no evidence for a “noble family” Indeed . he is recorded most frequently as Titus Syrachs (and variations) None of the baptismals show a recorded “de Vries” for his children
The only other “De Vries” surname appears for “Tryntje Titus de Vries” sponsor to child Jannetje born 1682 of Titus Syrachs.

According to the prevailing recording practices of the 17th century “de Vries” would refer to “the Frisian” (e.g. like Cornelis Janse de Seeuw (the Zeelander) or Hans Hansen de Norman (the Norwegian et al.)
T. Bergen in his Early settlers of Kings county refers to one other Jan Jacob de Vries (not related) as being from a village called Vries near Drenthe, apparently this explanation has also been applied to Titus Syrachs de Vries.. Most likely Titus would have been recorded as Titus Syrachsz “van Vries” if it should indicate he was “from” that location.

Also “Captain Jan de Vries; died before 1651 (Register of the Provincial…)
Also “Captain David Pietersz de Vries” (1595-1644) born in LaRochelle, France lived
From age 4 on in Leiden, Holland. There is also a Frederick de Vries about 1638 in New Amsterdam. These people are no relation and not not born in “Vries” nor are they of nobility.
The “Titus” surname derives from a typical Dutch custom of using patronymics, such Teunis, son of Titus Syrachs de Vries would be “Teunis Titusz (Titusze, Titesse etc.)
All his children would be “Titusz, Titus ….”
Many Dutch families used the patronymics as family names, such as all of Titus Syrachs’ descendants continued to use “Titus”

.There is no birth or original Dutch location for Titus or any ancestors.
1639: A birthdate of 1639 is not confirmed.
A birthdate of 17 Apr. 1644 is neither confirmed nor feasible.
There is no arrival date in New Netherland
There is a possible marriage date in DRC New Amsterdam “7 March 1659 (could be 1660 according to the calendar in use) Titus Sierecks of Tytus de Vries (the contributor on the genealogy forum referred to poor text quality) paid a marriage fee.”-
Titus Syrachs married Jannetje Teunis de Nysse (not Jannetje Teunisze Covert she marr. Hans Hansen Bergen)
Jannetje was daughter of Theunis Jansze Nyssen and Phoeba Felix bapt. 22 Dec. 1641. A supposed death date for her 21 Nov. 1735 has not been found or confirmed.
Parents of Theunis Nyssen might be Nils Denyse and Helena van Brunt but can not be confirmed.
Marriage “ Theunis Nyssen jm from Binnewick (and) Fhaebea Falix jm. From Jarlsten, Engelt 11 Feb. 1640” (DRC NA) She was only child of John Seales and Maria Robbers. John Seals will 7 Apr. 1745 mentiones his son in law “Tonis Nyssen” Maria Robbers marr. 2) Thomas Grydy wid. Jannecken Isaacse 9 Aug. 1645 as “widow Jan Selis (DRC NA)
There is not evidence that Phoebe marr. John Cornelis Buys (1629-1686) who was adopted by hendrika Jans Damen as an adult provided he would use the name Jan Jansen Damen. Phoebe is recorded as Church member in Flatbush 1666 as Femmentje Jans.

There are several references in T. Bergen Early settlers of Kings County pertaining to Titus Syrachs and his family. However, it is known that at times Bergen’s placements and information is not correct, therefore caution with his data is advised.

As the list of living or dead children for Titus Syrachs is not complete and only partially documented. There is no evidence he married twice. Supposed children Teunis born 1665, Arays 1677, Francis 1681 or Phoebe 1687 have no sources or documentation.

19 Oct. 1660: “Hendrick van Dyck pltf. v/s Titus Cyre and Jan van Cleef defts. Demands payment of fl. 250 in zeewan with costs for purchase of a horse mill. Jan van Cleef is ordered to make payment. (Records of NA 1624- 1674

18 January 1661: Titus Cyre is ordered to appear in court to make a declaration (same as above p. 252)

January 1662: Titus Cyre plaintif v/s Jacob van Werkendand are declared” both in default” also Titus Cyre v/s Joorsen Janse van Ameryck “both in default” (Court minutes of New Amsterdam p.17. It is not mentioned what the decision was about.

24 March 1662: “Appears Thomas Lambertson administrator of the estate for Tys Jansen….”Tytus de Vries” demands salvage because he brought forth the body of Tys Jansen ship carpenter…the burgomeisters allowed Tytis de Vries fl. 20 for fishing up and saving the body of Tys Jansen….. (this money) the amount being credited to what de Vries owes for his burgerright.” (The minutes of the orpphanmaster of NA..p. 133)

“23 Dec. 1663 Bapt. DRC NA:”Titus Syrachs (and) Jannetje Teunis “Tryntje” she marr.9 Sept. 1683 Johannes van Ekkelen. Is it possible that she is baptismal sponsor to her sister Jannetje bapt. Mar. 1682 ( rec. as Tryntje Titus de Vries)
Johannes van Ekkelen (Ekelen) son of Jan Jansen van Ekelen and Gisseltje Brad. Johannes was schoolteacher and county clerk to 1703. In 1692 he and others were nominated to go to Pennsylvania in search for new lands.
Issue:
Helena bapt. 1698 (DRC Flatb.) sponsors Denys Theunise, Helenea Denys.
It is “possible” that this is Denys Teunis Nyssen (1654-1707 ab.) and his 2) wife Helena Courtelyou. This would be maternal uncle and wife to Tryntje.
Johannes no bapt. Date sponsors Johannes van Ekkelen, Gesje van Ekkelen
Jannetje bapt. 11 Oct. 1689 (DRC Flatb.) no sponsors
Jannetje bapt. 28 Jul. 1691
Anna van Ekkelen no bapt. Date.

12 Apr. 1669 (T. Bergen) Cornelis Barentse buys house and lot from Titus Syrachs de Vries.

1672 about likely birth of daughter Femmentje.(no recording)
Femmentje marr. 9 Mar. 1692 Johannes Symons (DRC Fltb.) He per son of Sigismond Lucas ( (does not connect to patronymic) and Gertrude Bullers--No recording for marriage of 12 Feb. 1690 to Jan Hegeman. (Also no documentation for Jan son of Adriaen Hegeman and Catherine Margits, although there are different family stories one claiming marr. To Femmentje and “no children”
No further data on Femmetje or Johannes.

1673 (T. Bergen et al.) Titus Syrachs is Lieutenant in Midwoud.

2 Mar. 1674 (T. Bergen) Titus Syrachs de Vries sold 8 acres to Cornelis Janse de Seeuw.

About 1674:Likely birth of Teunis Titus since he was of age in 1695.
Teunis marr. 1) by 1697/8 (rec. land deed) Newtown Mary Ramsden, dau. Of John Ramsden and Hannah, Teunis marr. 2) 20 Dec. 1699 Mary Barre, dau. Of James Barre and Mary Johnson. More in later chapter.

13 Auf. 1675:Titus Serix is named one of the overseers of the estate of Samuel Boon late of Jamaica. (Abstracts of wills, NYS Hist. literature v. 1 p. 39)

1677 (History of Kings County) Titus Syrix has a lot named in the Andros charter)

About 1677 poss. Birth of Francis Titus.
Francis has no baptismal or marriage recording. He is recorded first in 1698 as baptismal sponsor to : Geertje” of Syrach Titus (and Aeltje Webbs)
Francis marr. 1698/1699 Antje Fonteyn. It is likely he had a son Francis born 1699/1700.
Who made a will 1759 pr. 1764. More in later chapter.

1678 (T. Bergen) Titus Sirachs received 300 fl for 10.000 bricks for the new parsonage in Bushwick.

30 Sept. 1679: Titus Serix devriez is named defendant and Messr. Gabriel Minneville plaintiff the case was withdrawn from court. (no further details)

28 Dec. 1679 (DRC Fltb.) baptismal: “Titus Syrachs (and) Jannetje Nysse “Syrach”.
Syrach Apparently married shortly before 1698 Aeltje Webbs.
More in chapter Syrach Titus and Aeltje Webbs
(Supp. Head of household in Newtown Census 1698) In 1698 (DRC Fltb.) baptismal: Syrach Titus, Aeltje “Geertje” sp. Francis Titus and Marretje Montfoort.
Aeltje Webbs is most likely daughter of Geertje Pieterse Luyster who marr. 1) Jacob Wips/Webbs and 2) Jan Pieterse Montfoort. Aeltje Jacobs is mentioned in the estate of Pieter Cornelis Luyster . The name “Geertje” and the sponsors Francis Titus (brother to Syrach and Marretje Montfoort (maternal aunt to Aeltje Webbs are supportive)

August 1679 from rootsweb Dutch archives data from Robert Heisler/Consistory Minutes of Flatbush p. 17…:
In as much as Titus Syrachs de Vries captain of the company from Midwood had unseely behaved with a young maiden, Annetje Dirks forcing her to commit adultery,……”
Apparently this was an issue discussed by member of the four churches, later by the elders… however the punishment appears to be only a reprimand to exhort to improvement for the enormity of his sin and he was excluded from participation in the Lord’s supper.
It is said that a child “Jan” was born. Annetje Hooghlandt of Dirk Janse Hooghland marr. Likely 2 times. A young son Jan from perhaps first marriage to Hendrick van Wayen or from Titus died, her second marriage to Gerrit Lambertsen has unrecorded son Jan with no baptismal record. There is a possible baptismal for Jan 1 Apr. 1678 in Brooklyn no parents sponsors Jeronimus Rapelje and Katalintje Rapelje (per Annetje’s great grandmother?? This from R. Heisler)
I found this recording in Flatbush DRC which says “1 April 1678 Jan, Jeronymus and Catayntie Rapelje” . (Catherine Trico/Rapelje died in Sept. 1689)
It is interesting that those church inquiries do not mention that an illigimate child was born, there is only remark “forced her to commit adultery”.
Therer is mentioning that he also had to pay a fine.

1680 lot # 37 in New Lots is recorded for Titus Sirachs.

11 Aug. 1680 T. Bergen) Catharine van der Werve widow of Do. Polhemus bought land from Titus Syrachs de Vries in Flatbush

March 1682 (DRC Fltb.) baptismal: Titus Syrachs, Jannetje Teunis “Jannetje” no sponsors. Perhaps Jannetje married Cornelis de Luyster as second wife, it can not be confirmed.

1685 The Reverend Casparus van Zuuren purchased land and brouwerie from Titus Sirachs.

1687 No Titus and no Titus Syrachs de vries (et al) is recorded in Kings County Oath of Allegiance in 1687 or elsewhere.

Heisler give a quote “ after entries dated 15 Dec. 1688 in “perhaps the Kings County deed book?” One entry reads that widow of Titus Sierecks paid for a shroud. Also, entry for 26 Jan. 1688/9 mentions his estate. The book “The Covert Family (by Edson S. Jones?) “ 1688/9 widow of Titus Sierecks paid for a grave in the church” (no other details as of yet)
There are unresolved issues for Titus death:
It is possible he was too sick to take the oath in September 1687.
The logical sequence is Titus died shortly before 15 Dec. 1688 and had no will (none has been found) his estate administration took place in January 1688 (pertaining to the old calendar December and January were in the same year.) There is a list of his estate inventory…taken by Joseph Hegeman and Pieter Strycker which shows not much of value, many items being “old” it shows 2 horses, 4 cows does not mention land(??) also does not appear to show the typical “Dutch Bible” or any money..

T. Bergen: In 1695 Teunis Titus and his mother Jannetje sold land. About 4 acres to Johannes van Ekkelen (husband of daughter Tryntje) This reference appears in T. Bergen”the early settlers of Kings County” he gives no source. There is no further evident recording for Jannetje. The sup. Marriage of Jannetje to Cornelis de Luyster can not be confirmed, neither, there is some reference that Luyster was brother in law to Teunis Titus.

The next chapter is about Teunis Titus and his children (summaries)

Titus researchers are saddened to learn of the death of John Alva Titus. John was the author of "Saga of Two North American Families: Andrews-Titus" published in 1987 and was the one person that got me started on Titus genealogical research.

NORWAY, ME - John Alva Titus Sr. age 89 of Norway died Friday March 14, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Bryant Pond, E on Nov. 22, 1918. He is the son of Leroy and Eva Titus. John was a graduate of Paris High School.
TITUS, Samuel, Abner, and wives

Hello list members,
I am looking for more information on Samuel's wife, Deborah FEATHERS. They were married Nov. 1, 1770 in Centersville, Bucks County, PA. I was wondering if anyone saw the actual handwritting. In the transcript, her last name is spelled FEATHERS. I am thinking MAYBE this is transcribed incorrectly. So far nothing has been found on her.

Also, Samuel's son Abner's wife, Mary NESUS. They were married Jan. 10, 1800 in Loudoun County Virginia. With this spelling, nothing can be found on her, other than the marriage. I have seen the actual writing for her name, and I am thinking MAYBE it is transcribed incorrectly. I am pretty sure I can connect her to George and Susanna Neafus,(various spellings) that were originally from Bucks County then moved to Loudoun.

Any thoughts on this from anyone researching these two ladies> And as an added note, I have been told by my father, who is 81 that supposedly one of his grandmothers were of Indian blood. No proof of course of this. Since we can trace all of the other wives, it maybe Mary or Deborah.

Thanks

Hi all,
I'm looking for some help finding information on a Charles R. Titus, married to Mary Ann Cook in 1852 in AK. They had two children that I can find, Francis Marion Titus in about 1855 and Charles Robert Titus in 1859. The father was not living with his family in the 1860 census. Both children, in later census, usually say their father was from PA, though one census said NC and one just said, 'Unknown'. Francis and Charles Roberts, the sons, moved to texas in the 1870s.

I'm at a dead end finding more info on the father. Any help would be appreciated.

OK, now this is a hard one. Waiting for info on the Titus part of my family, but was wondering if anyone knew of any Titus families that lived in the Paw Paw area of Michigan? My grandmother lived there. She had 5 daughters; Madeline, Virginia, Linda, Joyce, and Joan. I'm not sure if her one son, Larry, was blood related or adopted but she had adopted children, one was a boy named Jimmy and then a young girl but she left early on. We don't have any of them alive at this time to give us info on the family, and birth records are trying to be gotten. We just have to figure out where they were all born. The father is unknown, all we know is that he was a Titus, it would have been about 1967 or around there when they were in Paw Paw and then later on after 1980 the family moved to California.(Just the ones that lived in Paw Paw) If anyone thinks they can help please contact me or leave a message here. Thanks, Hoping to find out more soon........

I have an antique photo album with pictures from the Titus and Osmun families. Not all pictures are identified, but most were taken in Hackettstown, NJ by photographers George Auxer, I.G. Owen and Percival. Key note: Owen's studio was obne of the first in Hackettstown circa 1864-1866 and Percival from 1867-1889; Can't find info on Auxer's studio yet).
Some of the names include Lizzie Titus (also identified as "Papa's sister"), Aunt Kate, Aunt Libbie, Aunt Mag (Margaret Titus), Wilson Osmun and his wife, Grandfather Titus, Aunt Susan, Uncle Benj Cook (who was married to Margaret Titus), Myra Titus (child... the name "Crane" was added, which leads to belive she married a Crane) Ed Crane (who may have been Myra's husband or child) and Aunt Susan. If anyone can link any of these people, I'd be most grateful!

Titus was son of Absolin and Ruth. Asolin died 26 Dec. 1864 - born 1745 to 1765. Has anyone ever heard of them? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks, Margo

Capt. James H. Titus

I'm looking for A Capt. James H. Titus, b. abt 1840 possibly in NC, died in 1865 either on board his ship bound for New York, or in New York. Family legend has it that he was shot to death in New York.

He was partners with Thomas Jefferson Mott in a Civil War era "shipping business" and traveled between Florida, Nassau Bahamas, and New York. He married the granddaughter of a British loyalist, Charlotte Euterpia Roker, b. in Nassau, New Providence (now Bahamas).

Their daughter was Mary Emily Evelina Titus, who married Waynal Greanleaf Clough.

Charlotte married Titus' partner Aug. 22, 1864 in Nassau, Bahamas, according to the Bahamas National Archives. There is an obvious date discrepancy here (his death, her re-marriage)that I would very much like to resolve.

For anyone researching the Roker/Clough connection, I now have the ancestry of the Honorable Thomas Roker, attorney and British loyalist. Take a look at World Connect, database: hymnsinger. It has been updated as of Feb. 18, 2007.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you.

Tracey Miller Edwards

I just started looking for my mothers side of the family and have hit an abrubt end!

I am looking for information about Russell Whitney Titus, my great grandfather. He was married to Edith Possien and had one child, they lived in Pequannock N.J. but I think he came from New York somewhere. I know he died young, in his thirties.

I haven't a clue as to his parents name. He had a sister, Ethel Titus Kennedy, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

I know that I have very little information, but I would appreciate any information anyone can give. Thanks
S. Craig
Address: Mason Valley, Nevada
County: Washoe

These children may possibly belong to Thomas C. Titus b. about 1840 in Ray County, Missouri and Alzenia Boatman, Mosier, Burns, Titus b. about 1842 in Indiana. Alzenia's youngest daughter by Olive Mosier was in the Reno, Nevada area in 1880 which offers me hope that Louella and Thomas may be her children. I am more than happy to share information - thanks.

My g-g-g-grandmother was Christeen Titus married to Ziba Hazen Osmun. I know her date of birth was December 7, 1806 and her date of death was March 2, 1845 but I don't know ANYTHING about her ancestors. I suspect she died during or shortly after childbirth (of my g-g-grandfather Silas Osmun). If anyone has information on her ancestors, I would appreciate it.

Titus/King connections

For over 12 years, I had Minerva King’s parents as Dyer King and Minerva Inyard. The last week in June, I learned this was wrong. I got a copy of the 1860 census, as well as a copy of her death certificate. They show that Moses King was her father. It also shows her mother’s name was Minerva. From several sources, I have come up with this data. She was born 2 February, 1853 in Howard Co. MO. Her mother was Minerva Titus. There seems to be an endless amount of data on Minerva Titus and her line. What I’m having trouble with is Moses King’s parents and Moses and Minerva’s 9, 10, or 11 children. In the 1850 census they were living in Buffalo Lick Township in Carroll County, MO. At that time, Abraham King was living with them. I’m just starting uncover all of this and I don’t know many answers. I have a lot of gaps in my research and I”m hoping that some of you can help me fill them in.

Thanks!
Children of Moses King and Minerva Titus

2	i.	Minerva King. B. 1853
3	ii.	Abraham King was born ABT. 1839 in Missouri.
4	iii. William King was born ABT. 1841 in Missouri.
11	x.	Maryann King was born 1837

I have obtained the above from websites. These are the siblings of Moses King and Minerva Titus. On some websites the birth year of Minerva is shown as 1837 and Mary Ann as 1853. I had conflicting information indicating that the birth dates of the siblings were reversed. On the 1860 census Minerva is shown as being 7 years old. A Mary Ann is listed nearby has a different surname, presumably her married name, and was 23 at that time. I would like to correspond with anyone else who might be working this line.

March 30, 1959, Mt. Washington Cemetery.

Who are Minerva King’s parents?

I have put this aside for several years. This week I have gotten back on it. I have found in several sources stating that a Minerva Titus married a Moses King and they had ten children. In all the sources they have a Minerva King born in 1837 and a Maryann King born 1853. There is not any more data on them. Could they have them mixed up? If my Minerva King’s mother is Minerva Titus, I will be able to grow on that lane.

I have checked many sites on the internet and they all give Elizabeth Titus to be born in 1691 which would mean her children were born 20 years before she was born. I believe the correct date is 1650. If this is true then who are her parents because they could not be John Titus and Sarah Milller. It would have to be John Titus and Abigail Carpenter or another Titus. Has anyone done real research on her. Elizabeth Titus married John Garnsey in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.

If any of his relatives see this post and would like the book, please send an e-mail to camilla255@aol.com and I would be more than happy to send it.
Last week I received my copy of Leo Titus’s new book, “Titus: A North American Family History.” It is 658 pages crammed full of wonderful research, and well deserves a place on the bookshelf of any of you who are on the male line of descent of Robert Titus, the immigrant of 1635. I understand that over half of the printing has already been sold or placed in libraries, so if anyone wants a copy it would be best to reserve early.

I am trying to help my Aunt, with our family genealogy. We have traced her grandmother to Worth County, Kensett, IA in 1895.

In the 1895 Iowa Census, she is found living on the Worth County Poor Farm with her two children:

Josephine Nelson age 27 from Sweden-pauper
Olivia Nelson age 2 born in Worth County
Lewis Nelson age 0 born in Worth County (my grandfather)

My grandfather was adopted at age 2 in 1896 by William Titus and Katherine Morrissey Titus of Osage, IA. No adoption record found to date.

His sister, Olivia, name changed to Freida Nillson was adopted by James Robertson and Gertrude Leonard Robertson of Osage, IA in 1896. We have this adoption record. Her mother is named as Josefina Nillson in the record.

Any information on this family mystery would be greatly appreciated. We would like to know where Josephine/Josefina came from and where she went after her children were adopted. Thank you!
Hi, One of the first things to peak my interest in family history was the graveyard on the road I grew up on. Most of the people burried there died of small pox around 1900. They were almost all in the Titus family. As a young girl I rubbed all the stones (20-30 in all) and tried to group them by family. Let me know if you believe some of your ancestors are burried there and I'll get you in touch with the people who can help you get photos or listings. I don't live anywhere near there anymore.
