Richard Toner and Mary Cullen

I'm looking for information on the family of Richard Toner and Mary Cullen. They lived in Brooklyn in the 1860s and 1870s, at least, and among their children were Julia, Mary Ann, Samuel, Elizabeth, Louisa, William, Judith, and James. Samuel died at age 18, Julia and James died of cholera in 1866 - she, I think, was about 16, and I don't know how old he was. However, I think they later named another daughter Julia, who grew up to be my great-great-grandmother. I can't find her on early censuses, though.

Richard's mother was named Judith, and they were from Maynooth, County Kildare. I don't know whether he and Mary married in this country or in Ireland.

Louisa married a man named Deegan, I believe, Elizabeth married a man named Loughlin, and either Judith or Mary Ann married a man named Murphy and had several children, among them John, Thomas, and Annie Murphy Dowd.

Mostly because of the confusion about the two daughters named Julia, and my inability to come across the younger one - yet I know the older one died, and I KNOW Julia Toner grew up to get married and have many children - I'd love to find out any more information about this family.

Irene C. Toner/Alexander Truman Brownlow

I am looking for information regarding Irene C. Toner and her family. Irene was the only daughter of D.L. Toner and Susanna E. (Susan) Meilkink - they also had two sons (one named David) D.L. Toner was born 28 Sep 1844 in St. Charles, Illinois and died; 1910 at age 65 years in Chewelah, Stevens, Washington. Susanna E.(Meilkink) Toner was born 1850 (of Toldeo, Ohio) and died 1918 in Chewelah, Stevens, Washington. Both D.L. & Susanna are buried in Saint Mary of the Rosary Cemetery - Chewelah, Stevens, Washington.
Irene C. Toner. born in Chewelah, Stevens, Washington married Alexander Truman Brownlow in Chewelah at the Church of St. Mary of the Rosary 18 August 1910. Alexander Truman Brownlow was the eldest son of William Hunter Brownlow and was the editor of the Chewelah Independent in Chewelah. After their marriage (A.T. & Irene C.) they moved to Deer Park, Stevens Park, Washington where he was owner/editor of the Union (newspaper).
In the 1920 Census (Spokane County, Washington) Alexander Truman was listed as the forman for a print shop and Irene listed as his wife with 4 children: Hugh 8 years old, Gail (son) 7 years old; Elizabeth (daughter) age 4 1/2 years; Bernard A. (son) age 2 11/12. All children born in Washington. NOTE: Elizabeth Janet Brownlow was also know to her family as Jeanette - She married Robert Quimby and died in Vancouver, Clark, Washington. A. T. & Irene were divorced and A.T. moved to Oregon (St. Helens, Columbia County) where he went to work for Livona Berenice Anderson and her partner Jessica Longston at the "Chronicle-Mist" newspaper owned by these two women. He later married "Berenice" and they had two children, a daughter Kathleen and Charles Truman Brownlow.
Any information would be appreciated and, of course, I would be more than happy to share any information that I have.
The information on the Toner family was gathered during a research trip to Chewelah, Colville and the Spokane area in July 2002.
Sarah Ann TONER, born abt. 1814 Wheeling (West) Virginia, married Henry Christy in Ohio

At this point, I have few clues concerning my ggg-grandmother Sarah Ann Toner. She was born about 1814 in Wheeling, (West) Virginia. She married Henry Christy on 3 October 1836 in Jefferson County, Ohio. They moved to Louisa County, Iowa about 1843, and had twelve children, the three eldest born in Ohio. They were: Eliza Jane, Mary Catherine, Hugh William, George M., Henry Roger, Thomas T., Emily Francis, Edward L., Ethan Allen, Sarah V., Amanda, and Anna M.

In the 1870 census, check marks indicated that both of Sarah's parents were foreign born. She died 20 February 1879 in Louisa County, Iowa.

Any leads regarding her family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Toner & Anderson from Derry City, Ireland

Some years ago a distant cousin sent me a document she had found in her late mother's effects. It was a lease in perpetuity for a grave plot in "Londonderry Cemetery". This had been issued to Hugh Toner, Labourer, Ferryquay Street, Londonderry in 1876. A note on the document showed that Emma Anderson (a grand-daughter of Hugh Toner)had been buried there in 1897 and that the grave was filled.

I decided to see if I could find out who else was buried in the grave. I phoned the cemetery office of Derry City Council and gave the plot reference. The next day I got details of the following burials.

15th Feb 1855, Mary Toner, Aged 75, Sugarhouse Lane, born Limavady, Parents Francis & Mary Toner.

21st June 1857, Mary Toner, Aged 105, Ferryquay Street.

29th August 1874, James Anderson, Aged 2 months, Bridge Street, Parents James & Elizabeth Anderson.

30th July 1891, Lizzie Anderson, Aged 21, 6, Alma Place, Parents James & Elizabeth Anderson.

21st March 1897, Emma Anderson, Aged 24, 6, Alma Place, Parents James & Elizabeth Anderson.

(Elizabeth Anderson was the daughter of Hugh Toner.)

I was very excited to find this information, especially that the parents were recorded. A mention of any relative is rarely found in the death registers.

At first I thought that the two Mary Toners were the sister and mother of Hugh Toner but having examined the dates further I'm thinking that they were his aunt and grandmother. This opens up the possibility to add two generations to my family tree. I will now have to find the dates of death of James and Elizabeth Anderson in order to find their graves.

Does anyone have a connection to these Andersons or Toners.
Searching for info on TONER family line. Earliest known member is James Toner b: 1795 Ireland, Co. Tyrone, possibly Cookstown; emigrated to Canada early 1800's & eventually ended up in Ontario. May have emigrated with parents &/or sibs. Particularily interested in trying to link-up with researchers of Francis Toner/Tonner & Catherine McChristy who emigrated to Quebec with son, Francis Jr. who married in Quebec; later may have been a brother of James. Interested in linking with any Toner researchers in Quebec.
I'm looking for information on Mary Toner who married John Sproule. I'm guessing she was born around 1785 most likely in Tyrone Co. She married John Sproule (born 1776), his second wife after Ann Edwards, after 1817 and before 1824. She most likely emigrated with John from Tyrone to Ormstown QP in 1823. John and Mary had William(?)(1821), John (1824), Mary (1824), Magaret(1826) and Matilda (1828).

The 1851 census for the Parish of St-Malachie shows John
Sproul, an anglican, aged 75, married to Mary Toner, a catholic, aged 66.
Edward H. Toner - Rochester, NY

I am looking for any and all information about my grandfather, who served in the army (WWI 5B Defensive Sector), and/or any of his relatives. I believe he may have been wounded and received an honorable discharge in 1918, based on the medals that I have. Marriage records indicate that he may have married in 1917, to a woman named Mary Sears, however, I have not been able to confirm that that record is indeed my grandfather.

My grandfather definitely was married to Margaret A. Fulmer in 1930, and resided in Rochester/Webster, NY until his death (unknown). They had two children, a daughter (name unknown) who passed away at the young age of 4, and a son (my father) by the name of Charles Hall Toner (born in 1934). To the best of my knowledge my grandfather passed away while my father was still very young. Unfortunately, my grandmother never spoke of her relatives...or my grandfather and his relatives. As a result, my father passed away without ever knowing his father or heritage...which I'd like to explore in his memory and for the sake of my children.

My grandmother remarried in 1946, to Arthur R. Chambery...and resided on a chicken farm on Webster-Penfield Road (Rt 250).

He was addicted to strong drink.

____________________

Pub. Thurs. Feb. 9, 1882

West Chester :

I wish to correct statements made on the character of WILLIAM TONER. The deceased did not spend money on strong drink.

Enclosed are statements of good honest men well acquainted with him. He had money owed to him from several places where he had worked.

His brother is anxious that he at least have the credit for not being a pauper, neither was he a drunkard. Let the men who owed him money step forward and pay the expenses that the county has incurred.

The writer of the previous article should state facts and not be too ready to use the press to injure the feelings of friends of the dead.

JAMES TONER

( Following testified the deceased was not a drunk )

Joseph Johnson, W.
Would like any help connecting William Toner b.1797, Ireland, d. sometime after 1880, Thomas Jefferson Toner b. 1800, Ireland, d. 1880, both lived later years in WV, to the Toners of Pennsylvania or New York. I have a lot of information on these two families but can not connect them with other Irish Toners. There was also a John and a James in the 1860 census (WV). Most of these dates are from census or the original headstone of Thomas Toner. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

In the very late 1700s my ancestor james Toner was born in Tyrone. He was the son of a farmer who lived on the estate of a wealthy lanlord, and had several sisters and brothers. Based on stories handed down, James left Ireland eary in the 1800s and may have gone to America. There are some suggestions that he and maybe several brothers ended up in Canada.James married a McKinnon or McKinley or some such name. I do not have much information about him after he left Ireland and am interested in hearing from anyone who may have some connection to this family. I am just learning about this computer and don't know whether i am looking in the right place but was told to try here.

Dear wayne:
I am so excited! I do think that we are talking about the same family, and this is such a surprise as I was told not to get my hopes up to early. I have just recently began looking for other information about my people after they left Ireland.
I do have a very old letter written by James to his parents and it mentions Hastings but i thought that might be the one in England. However it does say things about snow and woods and sounds like a place not very well inhabited and it struck me that could discribe North America as it was at that time.
If you are interested i could try to get a copy of the letter made for you. I guess i would have to send it by post. What is your mail address? I have some other things to which would well be interesting for you and I think my daughter could make a copy also.
How much do you know about Jamess family? He was not born right in Cookstown as you said but close by. Let me know where to send and I will try to get in the mail soon.
Best wishes from Ann

James Toner, County Tyrone to Ontario

James Toner, born about 1795 in Cookstown, County Tyrone, emigrated to Hastings County, Ontario. He married Elizabeth Doyle, probably before 1823. They could have been married in Ireland, or Quebec, or Ontario. The first record we have for them is the baptism of one of their children in 1830 in Hastings County. There were other Toners living in Hastings County at the time whom we suspect may be related to James, but we've not found proof of any relation. Around 1870 James and Elizabeth moved with a son and his family to Lambton County, Ontario. If anyone can find a connection to this Toner family we'd be most happy to hear from you.

Mary Ann and Bridget Toner, NB, Canada

Hi,
I am looking for some information on Mary Ann Toner who married Peter William Hickey, circa 1855 in NB. I am also trying to learn more on her sister Bridget who married Bill Hickey in NB.
Their origin is not so clear. Some sources say they were born in Ireland; others say they are from Northumberland County in NB, Canada.
I've also read that their parents were James Toner and G. Levesque. But it hasn't been confirmed yet.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Patrick

My great grandmother was Mary Ellen Toner. She came to the US from Belfast, Ireland with her father in the late 1800's, and settled in Kentucky. She would have been around 12-14 years old when she came. I believe her mother's name was Annie McGurk. Is anyone related to Mary Ellen Toner? She married Jesse Raisor.

Charles Peter Toner, Hannah McGinley

We are looking for Charles and Peter Toner the sons of Peter Toner and Hannah McGinley. They were born in Ireland. Peter on 5 March 1893 and he came to the US on the Caledonia which sailed from Glasgow, Scotland. He arrived at Ellis Island on the 27 April 1914. His brother Charles was here first. It is my understanding that they had two other brothers that remained in Ireland. Peter's place of residence in Ireland was listed as Crossogs. Can anyone help us with where that is located? I believe it is in Donegal but am unable to find a good map of Ireland that can be searched. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

Todd,
I received your response, we have found out that my husbands fathers name is Paul Toner born in the NY city. His mother was (Mary Duke maidenname) remarried with the name Hamilton at the time of his being placed in a foster home, which we found out the foster care agency was called Fresh Air Agency out of NY. My husband went to a family in Canisteo NY where he remained till he joined the Service. He was 7 years old when he left his family in the Bronx. He does remember having a brother named Jimmy who was in the service at that time. We would be interested if any of this is related to your findings. Thanks, K.Toner
